The Only Human you've never known before....
Early 2002 - the first time David Tennant would be the lead actor, and carry a show…
In this second installment of the making of Only Human, you'll learn about the innovative techniques its creators used to bring Tyler and Ada to life and allow David to interact in real time with Ruth Millar, who played 'virtual assistant' Ada.
You'll also find out about the filming locations, the eclectic music chosen for it by its two creators, and...its DOCUMENTARY!
Also, author Jim McClellan has graciously shared his personal memories of working with David on Only Human and photos from his personal collection of the actual making of the first pilot (with more of Jim's reflections and photos in upcoming installments!).
…and a few other believe-it-or-nots I promise you won't want to miss.
With exclusive BTS photos and info, too! Now go read already!

It's almost here...
The first Blackberries arrived in 2002, twelve years before the age of Alexa began…
That same year, Jim McClellan and Andy Smith wrote Only Human, a television pilot which saw a human lead actor interacting with a computer-generated co-star named Ada.
McClellan was fascinated with the idea of human/artificial interactions and relationships.
With support from BBC Imagineering, Only Human was filmed. The pilot featured a certain enthusiastic, up-and-coming stage and screen actor as Tyler, Ada’s…
Well, we could probably get away with saying, ‘companion.’
That up-and-coming young unknown was an actor named David Tennant.
Now you might think the Only Human you've seen was the end of it - but it was just the beginning.
If you want to know the rest of this incredible story, subscribe to A Tennantcy To Act.

This upcoming five-part series on Only Human will feature exclusive interviews with the people who developed the show, revealing its entire, amazing journey...from the people who were there.
And oh yeah...also?
A ton of never-before-seen photos!
What’s your favorite memory of Terry?
The last time I saw him. We had been left on our own and Terry (who had Alzheimer’s) had sort of drifted into his head. He stopped talking. So I started to sing They Might Be Giants’ song Shoehorn With Teeth. And after a few lines, Terry started to sing along. He remembered more lines than I did. And then he talked with intelligence and enthusiasm about the tour in 1990 to promote Good Omens we did, when that was our tour song, and for a little while my friend was back.

Video of Michael listening to David's eulogy on the WTAWTAW podcast. The way he is blushing and laughing with his whole body is everything...

So I guess I'm a Protodavidologist?
This afternoon I was chatting with a friend of mine. He asked me about my Substack, A Tennantcy To Act, and asked if I had coined a term for my particular specialist focus: early David Tennant research. I said I hadn't (though some have variously called me a DT Archivist Extraordinaire or more colloquially, Encyclopedia DT-ica).
He proffered the term, Protodavidologist.
I did a complete WHOOOaaaaaaahhhhHHHH and told him I was totally stealing that.
If it wasn't a thing before by golly, by damn, IT IS NOW!
"Hi! I'm a Protodavidologist....reporting for duty!"

David Tennant and Mark Gatiss - a photoset
These two met and bonded over their mutual love for Doctor Who, and they worked together numerous times down through the years before finally working together on the show that had cemented their friendship (both on “The Idiot’s Lantern”, an episode Mark wrote, and on “The Lazarus Experiment”, an episode that Mark guest-starred in). Mark was one of the first people David told after getting the role of the Tenth Doctor.
I love fanboy friends.
Mark Gatiss from the Quatermass Documentary: At the end of rehearsal, we had mics in our hair and he (David) said, “We have to get de-mic'ed, I’ve got to tell you something.“ I thought something had gone terribly wrong with the production… and he said, "Chris isn’t coming back to Doctor Who next year." I said, "Oh God! Really?" He said, "Yeah, and they’ve asked me,” and it was like, “Oh my God!" As long as we’ve known each other we’ve talked about how we’d play the Doctor. It’s our dream come true, so it was extremely sweet. I think he was quite nervous about telling me somehow, as if I’d actually try to kill him and take his TARDIS off him.
Trivia: Mark wrote a part for his friend David in the episode "The Unquiet Dead”, but Russell T. Davies, who was working with David on Casanova and who already had David in mind for the Tenth Doctor, talked Mark into making the mortician character an older man so the part would no longer be appropriate for David – mainly because RTD didn’t want to use David in a small part if he was later going to be the Doctor.
2024 Update: Adding some more photos to this set (originally posted 10 years ago), because I’m always happy to see a long-term friendship thriving:
