I’m sorry about the cannibalism but in my defence it’s javert.

We’ve reached the most beautiful and almost ethereal death scene. Even the soldiers who had fervently aimed to reach the leader and eliminate him, were struck by a sense of awe and respect upon witnessing this "haughty, bloody, and charming" young man. Enjolras appears more than human here: devoid of any injuries, showing no signs of weariness or exhaustion after over 24 hours of fighting, instead appearing "fresh and rosy." Pierced by eight bullets, he didn't collapse but stood like a statue, head bowed. One of the soldiers compared him to a flower (and it was not meant as an offence) — once again a highly feminine comparison.

Regardless of what Hugo might imply, I believe Grantaire woke up because he heard Enjolras' voice in the room. It was the only thing that could rouse him at that point. And I believe that from the moment when he was still conscious, Grantaire knew that it would end like this and was prepared for such fate. And it is this gesture of Grantaire and Enjolras’ response to it, that make their deaths so profoundly moving that only someone heartless wouldn't shed a tear reading this.

This moment would have made for an ideal conclusion to the chapter. However, Hugo doesn't seem to know when to stop. While it's an important detail that the soldiers continued hunting the remaining insurgents, it would have been more impactful as a separate, shorter chapter.
