Tuesday Tips - Structure/Gesture: Why Not Both!

Tuesday Tips - Structure/Gesture: Why Not Both!

Probably one the most compelling issue to deal with when drawing characters. There’s clear pros and cons to both approach. The key, IMO, is to straddle the line between both. Give appeal and energy through the use of gesture, but always give hints of structure, weight and solidity to make the character feel like it lives in an environment. I do a quick, dynamic gesture first, then I go back in and add some structure on a second pass. In a rush, I’ll focus the structure pass on faces, hands and feet (feet: their position on the ground to give weight and/or balance to the pose.) -Norm @grizandnorm #tuesdaytips #100tuesdaytips #100tuesdaytipsbook #structuregesture #whynotboth

Tuesday Tips- Crowd Characters When I Need To Fill A Crowd With Characters, I Usually Try To Pick A Few

Tuesday Tips- Crowd Characters — When I need to fill a crowd with characters, I usually try to pick a few simple shapes and use those to build a series a characters to complete the scene. I may switch it up by adding a hat, glasses, switching gender, or a slight difference in posing. In essence, the goal is create a variety of characters without spending too much time on each one. That’s why repeating shapes or even entire characters saves a tremendous amount of time. -Norm

Tuesday Tips Hair Design.

Tuesday Tips – Hair Design.

Hi! Thank you so much for the super kind response on the hair design I did for Moana little friends; so I thought I would share with you on how I approach it.

First is know the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY? WHO are we designing? – age group and gender. WHAT is their background? – ethnicity will give a lot of info on the different hair type and natural hair color. WHEN & WHERE – this will inform you what style is popular at the time and the type of hair product being used and what type of accessories that are available WHY are we designing these character(s)? – is it for a main character or is it for crowd. In general, we want to make the main character to stand out than the crowd.

Then I applied basic design principles a. Strong silhouette read – simple shape! ALWAYS think SIMPLE b. Variation of BIG, MEDIUM, SMALL

For my example, I did Indonesian kids in their school uniform. Oh, how much I love and miss those white and red uniform. These kids looks soooo adorable in them. Happy Tuesday!

XO, Griz

Tuesday Tips Its An Eyebrow Thing A Recurring Note A Story Artist May Get In The Production Of An Animated

Tuesday Tips — “It’s An Eyebrow Thing” — A recurring note a story artist may get in the production of an animated feature is to tone down the angry eyes. We all try to draw fast and loose but, in the middle of it all, nuance may escape us for a brief moment. Arched eyebrows and a furrowed brow usually tend to read “angry”, even if we’re trying to express focus or determination. I would even say that, overall, it’s easy to overdo an expression. I’m not saying a pushed expression isn’t exactly what’s needed at the right moment. I’m just saying that the audience literally looks for the character’s expression first when looking at a sketch or panel. Keep that in mind and lure you audience in with slightly more nuanced expressions, until the right extreme expression calls for it. -Norm @grizandnorm #tuesdaytips #100tuesdaytipsbook #arttutorial #arttips #itsaneyebrowthing
