you know i think i’ve come to the conclusion that the answer to “but what if a cis woman is traumatized by men/male presenting people/whatever?” irt safe spaces is this: if you can’t be in the same room with someone you assume to be male or a man without feeling triggered, it probably means you have a lot more solo therapy and healing to do before relying on group therapy or other communal healing.

because how do you decide who gets to stay and who gets kicked out based on a cis woman’s trauma response? is it based on appearance? should intersex women with facial hair not be allowed because beards are triggering? should butches and studs not be allowed because masculinity is triggering? should talk broad shouldered trans women who don’t want to voice train not be allowed because low voices are triggering? is it based on identity? should a pre transition trans man who came out two days ago not be allowed because he’s a man? is a nonbinary person with a full beard and deep voice allowed because they are not a man?

because if you base your entire set of rules for who’s not allowed in the safe space on what makes cis women uncomfortable or triggers them, you’ve just made that space unsafe for trans people. and you need to decide if you’re ready to own that.

i don't fundamentally disagree with the notion of, like, not praising people for doing the absolute bare minimum. however, i am very much opposed to its common usage as an excuse to treat people poorly under the presumption that they probably deserve it, then deflect any criticism for doing so. ie. making a rude comment about a cishet person under the assumption that they're bigoted, being informed that said cishet person is actually an ally, and then angrily responding "so, what, am i supposed to reward them for the bare minimum???" no, buddy, you're supposed to not be mean to people just because you incorrectly assume that they would be mean to you if given the chance. showing ppl basic human decency is not a "reward", it's like. more of a basic right.

Just here after rereading the latest chapter of Maneater yet again, to say that I am Very Excited about that Oliver PoV chapter coming next! No pressure re writing time (writing takes as long as it takes, and anyway it would be terribly hypocritical of my slow ass to demand anyone else write faster!), just already commented on the chapter and wanted to come flail a bit more in your direction about how much I love your Felix and Oliver, and how feral I am gonna be over the next chapter <3

xD I am finally getting around to responding to comments today and Can Confirm that Felix will continue to lose gay chicken for...the rest of the fic basically. And be massive losers together. Tis their natural state.

I do have the next 6-7 chaps written from when I was speeding through writing, it's more the stalling out beyond that and *then* needing to edit before posting that slows me down lol, but I still love them. Waaay too much (wearing Oliver's watch while I write this lol).

I'm glad you like how I write them! They've definitely fallen into a specific interpretation that built up a lot as I wrote the fic (going in with a clear vision, who??), and Oliver especially only felt more 'solid' once I went into his POV, and even that's in a funny mood for him since he's very...peaceful yet predatory?

Here's a lil snippet!

Felix. Oh, Felix.

Even now, he can surprise Oliver more than anyone alive.

He wants to laugh. He’s already cried plenty. Felix is- He defies explanation, defies logic, emotional and reckless to the very end, and incapable of slamming the brakes on his own careening car. Felix can’t see himself as being able to crash, confident he could swerve out of the way the very last second - and quietly soothed by the certainty someone else will provide the cushioning if necessary, even if he doesn’t like to consciously think of it.

Oliver isn’t a cushion. He’s a cement blockade covered in fucking spikes, and he imagines pressing his cigarette on the soft, vulnerable skin at the back of Felix’s neck. Just for the smell of him when he burns.

He’d sooner stub it out on his own eye than hurt Felix. Grind it in, to form a better reminder.

Greedy, disgusting thing. A thing wanted by Felix Catton. The contradiction could drive a man to madness, and he already made his camp there years ago. The nature of what he is demands it.

How much more will I get?

It’s a question he’s been asking since he first decided to talk to Felix, rather than kill him like he felt he had to, the second Felix sent him a distracted smile through the window.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink," is usually a reminder that you can't control anyone else's behavior, only your own. Sometimes, you have to know when to move on from a situation that is out of your hands.

In other situations, it can be helpful to consider if the horse is you this time.

For example, you can get as many encouraging comments and kudos as your fanfic has readers, but at the end of the day only you can choose whether or not you write more.

Sometimes, "Write for yourself," means that you have to stop waiting for someone else to convince you that your work has value worth sharing before you believe in that value for yourself.

Write for yourself because you believe you have a story worth being told, not because you are hoping that someone else will agree with you after the story is done.

It means worry about what other people will think about your story after you've written it, but you have to decide you have something worth writing first.

The only definite guarantee is that no one will ever think anything of the story you gave up on before it was ever put down on a page.

what they don't tell you is that a well-written fic can get you to ship anything, and i mean ANYTHING. notp? not anymore. you will stay up late thinking about and crying over them for the rest of your life. characters you don't even know from a piece of media you've never engaged with? fuck it, they belong to you now. problematic ship that you loved to hate and now just love to love, that you must never tell your friends about? don't worry, ao3 knows how to keep a secret. like. a well-written fic will have you acting UP and that's a fact baby !!

"There is no such thing as black and white, good vs. evil situations in real life! Real life is always nuanced, and there's always some gray area to every situation."

"This is why I believe it is strictly immoral to write good vs. evil narratives, as these type of stories are all objectively harmful, promote black and white thinking, and lack any redeeming qualities."

Turns out maybe the one who lacked nuance was the one writing the blog about nuance in stories the whole time.

tfw "popular" fanon becomes so embedded in a fandom & discussions within fandom spaces that people just start treating it as the default and all interactions with others are coloured by this interpretation. have you considered that I actually don't subscribe to this take, which is nowhere in the source material? wait nvm, clearly not.

6.5k into next chapter of the Groundhog Day AU, and I feel like I am at the same editing stage as the 5k word point of Ch. 2. Y'know, the chapter that doubled in word count from that stage of editing and became a 10k word chapter by the time it was posted...

I have already cut this chapter in half and added a whole new chapter to the chapter count, it had better not become a 12k word chapter anyway.

In honor of Halloween month, I will be watching a lot of horror movies till the month is over.

Well.

I should probably say "Horror" movies. The primary categories of which are:

A handful of actual, fairly solid genuine horror movies with creepy vibes and not a lot of slasher gore-gore-gore.

Some very solid horror comedies, but an eclectic mix that definitely leaves out many of what most horror buffs would consider horror comedy staples.

A few movies that are technically billed as horror and have many horror elements, but also wind up being honestly kind of sweet comfort movies with happy (or at least happy-ish) endings?

A lot of delightfully weird, low-budget romps (where weird, here, very emphatically does not mean anything resembling 'artsy') that only classify as horror in the most technical of senses, such as "Slotherhouse" and "Aaah! Zombies!!" (the first of which is about an animal trafficked sloth murdering its way through a sorority house; and the second of which has a level of effort put into its creation that I think can be best described as, "exactly the amount up to which the people involved were still having fun, and absolutely not one single iota of effort more," which in the case of this movie was also objectively the correct amount of effort).

American Psycho II, which I feel like deserves its own category as a movie that had literally nothing to do with American Psycho, had been fully filmed and was basically on final edits, when it was forced to add a few new scenes and a handful of voiceovers to make it (very vaguely) related to American Psycho for entirely marketing purposes, and then proceeded to absolutely bomb in reviews because it was billed as a sequel but actually has literally 0% of anything to do with the movie it was billed as a sequel to for 100% nonsense publicity reasons. It also features Bill Shatner at his post-Star Trek Bill Shatner-y best, Mila Kunis carrying most of the movie as pretty much the only cast member capable of acting, and a plot that only barely makes sense sometimes, but still makes me laugh in delight every time. Really, the only thing that even remotely justifies this movie's attempt to bill itself as an American Psycho sequel is that otherwise, I might never have encountered it, and that would frankly be a tragedy.

And it occurs to me that if I happen to have any followers who have always vaguely wanted to participate in Halloween Month Movie watchings but also have super weird and often nonsensically specific taste in horror or horror-adjacent movies like I do, I would be totally down to offer personal recommendations from any and all of these categories (with or without plot summaries, insofar as there exists a plot to be summarized).

My credentials are: I love stories, and as a consequence I have consumed a lot of stories over my 3+ decades of life so far; I have extremely random taste that covers the whole range from "matches up with popular expectations" to "I think this movie is genuinely brilliant and do not get why so many people don't like it" to "bad"; and finally I am very good at finding extremely esoteric offerings + having a range of very typical to very very atypical takes on more well known offerings, too.

I remember reading a post about fencing once, and how people who are new to fencing actually tend to win a lot more bouts, particularly against experienced fencers, than most people would guess. The reason? Because people who are new to fencing haven't learned all the rules yet, and they will make absolutely bonkers, unsafe, and chaotic choices that are just not possible for someone more experienced to predict with any reasonable degree of accuracy. So lots of newbies win a surprising number of bouts, not because they are better at fencing but because they are more chaotic and more likely to make objectively more dangerous choices.

It occurs to me now that this makes for a really wonderful analogy to how Oliver ends up "winning" in Saltburn, when Felix and the Cattons were actually much more experienced and subtle manipulators (to the point that a good chunk of the audience didn't even notice how wildly manipulative the Cattons and Felix especially are), while Oliver is out there making wild impulse decisions and then retroactively pretending there was a plan, probably.

Oliver is the chaotic new guy whose understanding of normal social expectations is so far behind his peers that his behavior winds up being not just hard to predict for most people, but especially hard to predict for the wealthy assholes who have made an art form out of manipulating other people to get whatever they want without giving up anything of value from themselves.

And now I'm going to go roll around some more in my endless reams of delight over this movie and these characters and how wonderful and delightful and absurd every bit of it is. Haters can hate, but this movie continues to be perfect and own my whole heart because of it.

no you don't get it felix becomes upset with oliver cleaning his dorm because he's breaking the rules. the people who serve felix must do so invisibly because to do otherwise would force felix to confront how much others have to pick up after him and oliver comes in and demands: look at yourself, look at who you are and what you do, and this is the first time that felix resents him

don't make me acknowledge the ways you serve me. don't make me think about it. don't make me look.
