Still thinking about that post I've seen go around more than once now, the, "If a character is dead at the end of a story, were they already dead when the story started?" and all I have to say in answer is:
This is a story, it begins with your birth. Are you already dead?

Gonna be honest, I think Azula is most interesting only when her capacity for selfishness, cruelty, and enjoyment at seeing other people's pain is acknowledged.
I think she's a much less interesting character when all of that is written off as just a mask, her playing a role or something because she's constantly afraid of Ozai.
Being frequently selfish and cruel and feeling genuine pleasure at, for example, watching her dad abuse her brother doesn't mean that this 14-year-old girl raised by Ozai could never have a redemption arc or learn how to express the softer/kinder/more loving sides of herself in a healthy manner. I just want those things to be included in the stuff that she needs to redeem herself from.
