BUTTERS STOTCH IS AUTISTIC AND HERE IS WHY!!! (not really this is just a headcanon)

this could pass as headcanons or just a theory but here is a list of reasons why i think butters is autistic (as an autistic person who kins him)! and no, im NOT trying to diagnose anybody so don’t take this shit too seriously, it’s literally just for fun because butters is my favourite character.

1. stimming! first and foremost, the little hand thingy he does where he knocks his knuckles together could be indicative of stimming behaviours, it even reminds me of the same stims i do, and he’s seen doing it both offhandedly or when he’s nervous! stimming is known to be a self soothing behaviour and in butters case i think he does it without realising or when he’s nervous!

2. echolalia/verbal stimming. butters is shown to be singing a lot when he’s playing or using the bathroom or in the bath and when i was a kid i’d do the same thing, i’d sing the same words of a song so much in my daily life my mum would say “learn some more words or shut up!” or something along those lines. this could be a part of “echolalia” which basically means the repetition or echoing of words and sounds, like his ‘lu lu lu’ song which he’s shown singing on more than one occasion!

3. being excessively passive/not really understanding that he’s being bullied sometimes. this one is frequently shown through butters’ naivety and the fact that he doesn’t really seem to understand when he’s being made fun of. he literally does whatever he’s told to do, he’s quite literally the shows punching bag, whether it be that he’s taking the fall for something the main four have done or being there to take shit from his parents and cartman, and he doesn’t seem to catch on that he’s being taken advantage of. in ‘the tale of scrotie mcboogerballs’, he’s seen just going along with what the other boys tell him because he doesn’t recognise the fact that they’re lying to get out of trouble, struggling to read between the lines and just taking what the other boys say at face value— this is a reality for a lot of autistic kids, like when i was younger i never knew that people were pretending to be my friend as a joke because they found me weird, or i’d go along with things because i was afraid people wouldn’t like me anymore and this is something i see reflected in butters’ character.

4. not understanding social cues/taking things literally. in ‘the hobbit’ when wendy confronts him and says to him “are you just an asshole?” he quite quickly thinks literally and responds that he has “arms and legs, and lots of things.” (this is probably just a joke but here, jokes don’t exist, we take everything literally for the sake of our headcanons.) anyway, he doesn’t understand that she was using the word as a vulgarism and thinks she’s asking if that’s the only body part he has. then in ‘cartman sucks’ when bradley says ‘like-like’, butters doesn’t really understand that he’s insinuating romantic attraction. to others, these language choices would be obvious metaphor but since butters takes things literally, he doesn’t catch on right away. again, this can be a symptom of autism (even if these instances in butters’ case are few and far between.)

5. i guess not understanding social dynamics?? the whole thing with the vampire kids. he literally thinks they’re real vampires who actually drink blood when everybody else knows they’re not. everybody knows that they’re just emo wannabes (i mean an alt subculture) and don’t listen to his panicked waffle when he tries to tell people that they’re real, because butters thinks they’re actual vampires. he brought a literal cross when talking to them. that was literally me as a child. i used to think emos and goths were like demons and vampires and i used to want to be like them bro. i used to think i was a werewolf for fucks sake. i used to bark at people 💀💀butters is literally me. also the whole thing with lexus, he doesn’t really realise that she’s treating him nicely to try and get money from him and that they aren’t exclusive. also he doesn’t realise that it isn’t really acceptable to wait for her after hours?

6. social conformity and excessive need to abide by rules. lots of autistic people don’t like breaking rules. i know i didn’t. even at gunpoint butters refuses to let go of cartman’s hand and was pretty vocally against sneaking out of the field trip out of fear of being sanctioned but he was dragged along and was scared of being told off every moment he was away from the teacher and the rest of the class. mr garrison was probably exaggerating when he said “don’t let go of his hand until you’re back on the bus” but butters takes it literally. this also ties into butters taking everything everybody says as literal. this is literally autistic as fuck behaviour.

7. the entire existence of professor chaos or making an “alter ego”. as a kid it was painfully clear that there was something wrong with me. i was bullied pretty badly, taken the piss out of and called lame and weird and told that i didn’t fit in with other kids my age just like butters was. that’s just the reality of an autistic kid’s experience. i felt exactly how butters did; i did my very best to fit in and make people like me and i used to do what they said so they didn’t hate me and it still wasn’t good enough. so i did the exact same thing butters did. i made characters that were more charismatic, more sociable and weren’t as “weird” as me. i often modelled them after my favourite characters and used to roleplay as them so i felt better about myself. i didn’t feel as weird or “alien” when i acted out the characters that i made, because they were cooler and more popular than me. the fact that butters made professor chaos after feeling like i did when i was little and going through the same thing that i did, it’s probably one of the reasons he’s so important to me as a character.

8. the way he’s perceived by others. he’s lame, he’s weird. people literally see him as a wussy, he’s the stereotypically weird kid. his interests are ridiculed, he’s called a gaywad because he enjoys art, his taste in video games is seen as lesser by the other boys because he would rather play hello kitty island adventure over WoW. he’s literally cast out of the main four’s friend group because the boys call him lame and don’t want to be his friend anymore (this isn’t a hate post against the main four i know little kids can be assholes). sometimes he’s seen as too weird to join in with certain things. or ‘not cool enough’. god, his entire breakdown in “marjorine” when he lamented about how hard it was to be him (her??) is literally textbook autistic childhood. we’re bullied!! called weird not only by boys but girls too!! neurotypicals don’t know how hard it is to try and maintain friendships as a socially inept autistic child, it’s one of the most humiliating things you can go through. this is a reality for many autistic kids; we’re viewed as weird or our special interests are called weird by other neurotypical kids. i can’t count how many times people in in primary school would say ‘we don’t wanna be your friend anymore’ and run away from me laughing in the courtyard when i’d try to talk to them. OK MAYBE IM JUST PROJECTING BUT GOD LET ME HAVE THIS !!!

9. his bitchassfuck parents…. this is mostly just a personal headcanon but i think through subtext you can deduce the kind of parents linda and stephen would be. you know. “boo hoo look how hard my life is because my child is disabled” autism parents who records their child having meltdowns for internet asspats. the kind who ground him when he has meltdowns even though he can’t help it. they would totally make it about themselves because they’re just a pair of assholes like that. also the whole misdiagnosed D.I.D thing? they would totally take Autism Speaks as the gospel and try to get him in an ABA therapy in an attempt to ‘fix’ or ‘cure’ him. bro they would totally think that vaccines ‘cause’ autism. i hate them so much /lh.

10. his outbursts of anger. bro butters goes fucking sicko mode on that news reporter, as he should. in that episode i like to think of his anger as a meltdown that was a long time coming. his wishes being ignored, being used as a poster boy for somebody else’s ego, and then being probed by a random stranger in front of thousands of people about something that makes him visibly and deeply uncomfortable? perfect concoction for an autistic meltdown, my guy. autism causes a lot of aggression if a meltdown isn’t handled well and/or an autistic person’s needs aren’t met.

there’s probably more but i can’t think of them, anyway onto a few of my headcanons!

• he collects stickers, mostly sanrio and hello kitty and he’s very creative when it comes to arts and crafts. i mean, he made an entire superhero costume by himself.

• has bouts of situational mutism. especially when his parents scold him, he’s known to go non-verbal in response to stress or high-tension situations. fluctuates between hyper verbal and semi-verbal when in school.

• latches onto new hyperfixations, when he’s in his teen years he becomes hyperfixated on NFTs-

• has an oral fixation. he chews on his collars and bites at his fingers. always has to have something in his mouth, be it his own fingers or his pens.

• stims by knocking his knuckles but also flicks his fingers and flaps his hands. prone to bouncing his legs and can never sit still.

• either makes too much eye contact (stares at you unrelentingly) or doesn’t look you in the eye at all.

• especially bad at interpreting tone. doesn’t pick up on sarcasm or irony.

• he fucking loves horses. they’re one of his special interests.

• has 1 million fidget spinners cause he thinks they’re funky.

I honestly do not see the appeal of kenny. He’s so overrated. He’s just a prop to be killed over and over again, even the creators said so. A character that can’t talk cant really do anything meaningful. As for Mysterion, any of the kids could of filled that role. He’s not even a main character and hasn’t been for most of the show’s existence. Butters is the real fourth main kid.
