Has this ever happened to you?!
person speaking: "okay I'm a big boy artist now, I've had this graphics tablet for x years, I should move up and a display tablet is the obvious choice!!

presenter: "HOLD UP!!! maybe it isn't? don't assume that a display tablet IS the automatic right way to go!"
i think there is a general idea that display tablets > pen tablets

but for me and others, display tablets don't offer any benefits compared to pen tablets!

i certainly had the belief when i was younger that i would eventually move to a display tablet once i saved up enough to buy one.

turns out, display tablets dont offer me any benefits and i actually dislike using them quite a lot!

Pen tablets have many pros!

- POSTURE. (save your back!) - your hand isnt in the way (via technology now you can see the whole drawing all the time) - save £$€ (wow are they cheaper) - smaller (transport very easily!)

on a personal note i find my lines are far more gestural on a pen tablet and i physically dont have to draw as large a line on my tablet than i would on a pen display which is more efficient

HOWEVER...
the one pro a display tablet has over pen tablet is 1:1 hand position

for many artists this is a huge deal and the reason they prefer display tablets over pen tablets.

its is a easy swap if you are a trad artist moving to digital or frequently swapping between the two!

...and i absolutely hate this, not only does my back hate me after several hours (yes even with good positioning of the tablet) my gestural strokes vanish and my godamm hand is in the way.

BUT this is the main reason artists prefer display tablets.

pen tablets do require practice to get used to, and hand-eye co-ordination can take some time to train so if that's something you're struggling or just don't fancy worrying about, pen displays are great!
the point of this is to simply say:

if you get on with your pen tablet right now, don't think in the future, you definitely have to "upgrade". in fact, you might not get on with display tablets at all!
don't think you have to go and spent many dollars on an expensive piece of hardware that might add no benefits to you art/life
if possible, try before you buy, display tablets do not fit all artists, i'd rather be dead and buried than be told i have to use a display tablet for the rest of my life but this is not the same for everyone.

Ipad speaking: "but you own me??"

presenter speaking: "yeah so i dont have to lug a whole ass laptop around when i travel. i hate you"

a couple of people over the past few months have been surprised i use and prefer a pen tablet over a pen display so i thought i might do a little graphic about why pen displays shouldn't be thought of as the "final step" of every digital artist's hardware journey, more of a branching path option!
