I don't get why people get sooooo fucking pissy when I bring up the fact that Nesta and Cassian STILL aren't getting along and their mate bond is obviously weird and not normal. This is CANON. Even in HOFAS...the very last book Nessian was featured in, it was odd.

Bryce had to guess that Cassian was Nesta's mate...just because HE smelled like HER (shouldn't their bond have a scent?) - Ruhn smelled like Lidia pre acceptance and so did Feysand per Amren.

The mention of Cassian does not even stir Nesta one single bit from the thrall of the mask, so Az had to keep listing family and friends

Cassian allowed Nesta to be verbally berated and threatened by Rhys so much so that he took her away from Feyre on his direction bc Feyre was standing up for Nesta

Ember Quinlan, someone she JUST MET can realize she is turning in to herself and seems depressed

But let's go back a bit shall we?

Even unsnapped, mates have instincts toward one another (for example Rhys and Lucien both lunged for their mates in the Cauldron scene. Both staggered because their bonds snapped. Lucien did so PRE-Elain Cauldron dunk when she was still human as well)

It's worth saying that we never got an actual SNAP scene from Cassian

ACOMAF Cauldron scene:

Cassians wings are shredded so thoroughly by Hybern, the puddle of his blood extends to Feyre, and he is in and out of consciousness.

He twitches toward Nesta but later says it was because he made her that promise to protect her

Nesta comes out of the Cauldron and DOES NOT spare Cassian one single glance. And doesn't look at him the whole scene. She fawns over Elain, not her "mate"

ACOWAR:

Nesta repeatedly saves Cassian's life

When Nesta says something is wrong with the Cauldron and Feyre tries to tell her it's fine, Cassian says "I will ask Rhys"...instead of believing his "mate" right away.

(A glaring contrast to Elain bringing up the bird of fire when people thought she was crazy and Lucien IMMEDIATELY offering to find Vassa)

Nesta is dubbed "Lady Death" and during her nightmare scene "death turns a head toward Cassian"... (Nesta was possessed at this point, and death responded to Cassian)

The Bone Carver is super sus about Nesta, and appears to Cassian as an UNKNOWN person or entity. (We know the Bone Carver appears as your biggest weakness or downfall; Feyre's was Nyx, Rhys's was Jurian)

Cassian cuddles up to Mor after the HL meeting

Nesta saves Cassian's life another 2 or 3 times, including in front of Hybern. Instead of telling her to run or try and save herself, which would be a mate's instinct, Cassian holds her close so they'd die together. Meanwhile, Rhys took over for Feyre at the Cauldron so only he would die.

ACOFAS:

Cassian rarely pipes up when the IC talks shit about Nesta.

Gifts Morrigan lingerie in front of Nesta

He grumbles around and then gets enraged when Nesta doesn't want his gift.

He doesn't think about her trauma, nor does her respect her wishes for space. He follows her home, stalks her from rooftops, then angrily dumps her gift in the Sidra

ACOSF:

Cassian allows the IC to trap her in a sky house, knowing that Feyre's "trauma" stems from that exact thing

Cassian still cozies up to Mor and rubs her feet

He allows Mor to say she should be tossed back in the mortal lands

He still doesn't respect Nesta's need for space in the HoW and incessantly bugs her (bc he wants to get laid and thinks about himself mostly)

Screams at her when she doesn't want to train bc she is depressed and tells her everyone hates her

Allows Amren to say Nesta belongs in Hewn City and MOR agrees...all he says is they're trying to prevent her from belonging there!? Wtaf

Cassian says he is holding out for a mate bond "like Rhys and Feyre's"

Then there are these gems:

Cassian is consistently thinking of another female when he is "with" Nesta:

"And maybe it was the fact that it had been two years since he'd had any sort of sex, but he couldn't remember the last time he'd been so ridden by his own base need.

Some small, quiet part of his brain whispered otherwise. He ignored it. Had ignored it for a long time now."

I believe this is his former lover Tanwyn, as it comes up later on, but this continues:

Gods,sex with Nesta was like...

He didn't let himself dwell on comparisons as he sat in Rhys's office next to Amren and Azriel facing their High Lord across his desk. Those thoughts had not done him any favors last night. Or this morning, when he woke hard and aching, and realized that the scent of her was all over him.

He'd taken her hand in the library last night, leading her up to her room, his eyes still soft. But that had faded when he'd spied a copy of Gwyn's chapters about the Valkyries on Nesta's desk. She'd been reading about them she'd explained when he'd picked up the pages and leafed through them.

I won't get into the whole conversation but it's long, however:

"I fought beside the Valkyries for five battles. But that stopped at the Battle of Meinir Pass." His smile faded. "When most of them died to save it. The Valkyries knew it was a suicide mission from the start."

Azriel returned to his charges, but Nesta had a feeling the shadowsinger monitored every word, every gesture from his brother."

And of course:

"I was a grunt for an Illyrian legion; I wasn't privy to any of the leaders' discussions." He looked to Nesta, who was gaping at him. "But I had...friends who fell that day." The way he hesitated on friends made her wonder if any had been more than that.

This 100% sounds like a mate going feral if he had to be beaten and toed down to a wago to prevent him from helping. Tanwyn was the general remember:

"The Valkyries fought when even the bravest males would not. The Illyrians tried to forget that. I fought against males who were my superiors, arguing to help the Valkyries. They beat me senseless, chained me to a supply wagon, and left me there. When I came to, the battle was over, the Valkyries slain."

We have this when Nesta decides to be Valkyries reborn:

"If we are to be Valkyries born again,' she said, "maybe we should combine the Illyrian and Valkyrie techniques."

She'd meant it in jest, but the words rumbled through the space, as if she'd spoken some great truth, something that made fate sit up. Azriel turned to them fully this time, eyes narrowed. Like those shadows had whispered something to him.

A chill breathed down Nesta's spine. Cassian stared into their faces. Like he beheld something he hadn't seen there before.

At last, he said thickly, "Today, we learn Illyrian techniques." He nodded to Gwyn. "Tomorrow, you bring whatever information you have on the Valkyries' style."

"It's an enormous amount," Gwyn said. "Merrill is writing a book on it. I could get you a copy of the current manuscript, since it has most of the information in one place."

Cassian seemed to gain control of whatever emotion had taken hold of him, for he rubbed his jaw.

Then we FINALLY get the scene/explanation of why he has been sus and sad about it:

It had taken him a long, long time to get over that battle. He'd never been back to that pass in the Gollian Mountains, but rumor claimed its rocks remained barren, as if the earth still mourned the females who'd given their lives with no hesitation, who had laughed at death and embraced life so fully. His first lover beyond the Night Court's borders had been from the Valkyries' ranks a bold-hearted female named Tanwyn with a smile like a storm. She'd ridden into that battle at the head of the Valkyries and had never come out of the pass.

Cassian added after a moment, "Nesta would have fit in well with them."

Nessian's mate bond (if it is a real bond):

Was never actually formally accepted. Unless you count the "you are mine and I am yours" as the acceptance, but...

Cassian had no mating frenzy

Cassian never bit/ate the biscuit she offered him

The mating ceremony didn't happen yet. Nesta onky speculated what would happen in her head.

As of HOFAS, they're still fighting like cats and dogs.

As for everyone screaming about SJM's interview and "Elucien's rejection":

SJM would never mention a mate bond rejection in an interview if she is still keeping the next book plot and couple a secret.

Therefore it would NOT be the glaringly obvious aka Elucien

It would be something vaguely eluded to in the text...something like Nessian STILL NOT GETTING ALONG

Nessian are not equals in power & Nssta's natural fae body was NOT equipped to naturally have his children bc they're winged

Cassian does not seem to have any mate instinct whatsoever for Nesta

Nesta has saved Cassian's life 6 times, but he won't even tell Rhys to cut the shit with threatening her

There is glaring foreshadowing of Cassian's death since ACOMAF

I'm sure there is more but these are the things I thought of on the fly. I do think it's gonna be a Nessian rejection, endgame by death (Cassian), or Tanwyn and the OG Valkyries are not dead and she will come back (& the reveal will be she is his real mate). I also think Cormac is Nesta's true mate, but I digress.

Chapter 18 Crack Re-Write: Vermithor's POV

If you have a second, please take the time to imagine that you are an old man, like, at least “grandpa age” old. You are very tired, and very grumpy. But even more tired, and even more grumpy, and even more old than you, is your mother.

You are her only child; she and you have not seen each other in decades. Multiple decades.

But then one day she shows up outside your house, screaming about how you need to come help her with something. Now, because you are very old and very tired, all you want to do is sleep. But she screams at you to wake up, with increasing urgency—and, more importantly, volume—making it impossible for you to sleep.

And so eventually you roll over, all cranky, and scream right back at her, “What?!”

“I need you to come pick up my kid for me!”

As mentioned, you are her only child, so you ask her, “What fuckin' kid?”

“Did I ask you to interrogate me?” she screeches.

“Fine,” you say, and resign yourself to getting out of bed and picking up this fuckin' kid. So you go to all this trouble to stand up and go all the way outside for the first time in years, and suddenly all these tiny people, who all look the exact same to you, are running around and screaming, all up in your face.

So of course you get ready to dropkick them all,, for daring to intrude on your personal space bubble, but your mom comes zooming in and BITCHSLAPS you, screaming not to hurt her stupid little kid, because apparently he's one of them.

“Ma,” you yell. “Which one of these is the fucking kid?”

"The little blond one!" she yells.

You're about to murder her. "They're all little, and they're all blond!"

But then all of a sudden, one of these tiny blonde bitches comes running up to you, getting all up in your personal space and trying to physically climb you like a tree, even though you have never met before and do not even know the bitch’s name.

And you realize instantly that only your mom's kid would do something so insane, and so rude.

Batshit begets batshit, after all.

So you pick up the fuckin' kid, and then you go back to your mom. And maybe along the way you begrudgingly realize that you're actually kind of impressed by his audacity. You had another tiny brother once, Jaehaerys, who claimed you so that he could protect his family.

He's dead now, but it seems like this kid is trying to do the same, and it reminds you of him. So maybe he can stay.

This is basically a dramatic rendition of what was going on in Vermithor's mind in this chapter. I hope you enjoyed.
