Just exploring. Maru sat at her telescope; the familiar gaze of the heavens set in her trained eye. Just exploring, just looking. What could possibly be that exciting in those mines? What was Abigail looking for that wasn’t already found on this planet? When Maru looked through her viewfinder, she could count the rings on Saturn, and the see the big gaseous orb of Venus. The planets swirled around, each set at their own gravitational rotation around the sun. Every star was more fascinating than the last. Every comet, every meteor, every satellite.

dinner’s going great, albeit a little awkward, abby’s not sure if haley constantly making contact with her throughout the meal is intentional but she’s certainly not going to complain, but then caroline leans forward and asks the question the fake couple’s been dreading: how did it happen? abby’s understandably mortified terrified at being caught and she’s all like “ahaha you dont have to answer that babe,,” but then haley’s hand is on her knee and she’s shooting abby’s parents her most dazzling smile cause like, if theyre gonna lie they might as well put on a great show, right? then haley’s talking, talking about how their friendship and the moments that lead up to her realizing how deep her feelings run, the things she saw in abby that made her fall for her, and her words are so soft and sincere that abby herself almost believes it. it’s all just a lie, it’s a front theyre putting up to poke fun at her parents, it’s all in good fun, but haley’s hand on her knee is burning through her skin and the idea of it all being just an act makes abby’s heart ache in a way she’s never felt before, and it’s all just..
consider: pierre constantly pestering abigail to spend more time with girls like haley in hopes that it will encourage her to pursue less occulty and more wholesome hobbies and out of spite abigail asks haley to pretend to be her girlfriend in hopes that it'll get him off her back
omg.. little does he know he’s pushing her right into a big gay trap
but imagine Haley’s reaction to that and not being out yet (or even fully knowing she’s a lesbian yet) and she’s mortified and indignant and sorta pretends to act like she has better things to do but then Abigail convinces her it might be fun to piss off her dad - saying he’s urging her to hang out with Haley in hopes she’ll rub off on her anyway so they might as well try and fuck with him while doing so lmao. Haley accepts on the condition that whenever they do hang out they do whatever Haley wants to do and Abby reluctantly agrees, thus flirtation and pining begins

Abigail doesn’t hate summer. Summer means no classes, which means more time to spend on video games and band practice. No, she doesn’t hate summer at all.
What she hates, however, is the things that seem to come with summer: the bugs, the sweating, the insistent pounding of the sun that threatens to burn her the moment she steps out of the house. “Summer sucks,” she finds herself muttering as she makes her way towards Sam’s house.
“Really? What makes you think so?” a familiar voice says, startling Abigail. She turns her head and sees Haley, leaning on her house’s door frame, curious smile on her lips. She’s holding a sunflower in her hands, the golden petals matching her hair perfectly. Probably a gift from the farmer. “I love summer,” Haley continues. “Lots of great opportunities to go for a swim at the beach.”
Abigail tilts her head. “I don’t know. Doesn’t that get old pretty quick? I mean, we’ve lived near the sea our whole lives and all.”
Haley laughs in response. “I guess that’s fair. Still, don’t you wanna use the summer to get a nice tan or whatever?”
“Oh, Yoba, no,” it was Abigail’s turn to laugh. “I don’t think I’d look good with a tan. At all.”
Haley doesn’t answer right away, letting her eyes wander down the other girl. She’s studying her, and Abigail’s face heats up at the realization. Her hair’s probably all frazzled from the heat and, oh no, what if she somehow magically got a zit somewhere embarrassing in the middle of their conversation? Abigail is almost close to trying to find a way to check discreetly when Haley finally answers. “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! Besides, I think you’d look good either way,”
“You do?” Abigail splutters.
“I do.” Haley says, firmly. “Well, I’ve kept you here long enough. I’ll see you around,” she turns to go back inside her house, but not before raising the sunflower in her hand and shooting Abigail a dazzling smile. “Abigail.”

I’ve actually almost exclusively been reading older fics on both AO3 and fanfiction.net actually! I’ll rec some of those:

B.Y.O.B(aby) by @cj-jacobs: 11.5k words. Chloe and Beca find it difficult to separate from their baby, even when hanging out with their friends. It’s honestly one of the most fluffy, adorable fics I’ve ever read. :3

Anchor by @chloebdeale: 4.3k words. I just adore the characterization in this fic. It’s a short and sweet one-shot set after graduation. I love these little introspective pieces about Chloe and Beca’s relationship and how they grow together.

Umm and honestly, there are so many more. This fandom is ridiculously talented! There are a bunch of authors out there who have one-shot collections too, so I definitely recommend checking those out! I think there’s something really appealing about a short and sweet one-shot.
