Subtle/Discreet Witchcraft
These are all based off my experience and can be adjusted as needed. Creative thinking is a definite must for broom closet witches.
Cleaning Supplies: Using MOON WATER or SUN WATER as a base intention mixed with white vinegar, witch hazel, hydrogen peroxide, or straight bleach, you have a basic foundation for a DIY cleaning spray. I recommend looking into more DIY cleaning products and adding your own spin. Aside from the water properties, you can also add your own ESSENTIAL OILS into the mix with their intended corresponding magic. (I personally use a jasmine and cinnamon mix topped with eucalyptus to help with inner child healing, bringing happiness and protection). You can also use your favorite or intentional magical HERBS by making them into a tea with or without using your moon/sun water and add it into the mixture. Depending on how much oils and herbs you use will determine the smell if you want it to also smell a certain way.
Body Products: Don’t worry you don’t have to go completely DIY on this, but you can if you want to. Like the cleaning supplies you can add intentional ESSENTIAL OILS to you body wash, shampoos/conditioners, and lotions. If you add any of the waters or herb tea it will thin it out so if you really want to do this it is recommended to use a thickener before adding them. The oils can either be premixed combining your favorite product with the oils in a separate container, or mixed when using by adding a few drops of the oils you’re using to the product in your hand before putting on your body. (My personal favorites are adding lavender and jasmine to my body wash as a way to cleanse my spiritual energy before bed and also have the scent on my body for more dream magic)
Candles and Diffusers/Humidifiers: You can premix oils and add them to a candle for your spells, make candles with the oils, or add drops of the ESSENTIAL OILS and even sprinkle some of your intended magical HERBS to a lit candle or before lighting. You can mix OILS, MOON/SUN WATER, and/or HERB TEA to add to your humidifier or diffuser to bring a certain energy into the room. (Personal favs is to mix moon water with an intended oil for the night in my diffuser)
Cooking/Baking: There’s a reason kitchen witches and hearth witches exist. Cooking and baking with intended ingredients, seasonings and herbs are a great way to create your own magic and bring life to your spells. Look into what your favorite seasonings and flavors mean because it might be telling you something that you need in your life.
These are all things I tend to use when I’m with friends or family who may be particular against witchcraft (which is a lot of them) so it works great to make your own room, bathroom, or home overall a safe space to you all while covering it up in nice subtle ways.
PS: When it comes to making/using your own cleaning products, the excuse I use to hide my witchy intent is that the ingredients help repel certain bugs, which some oils do so it may be worth looking into that alongside your magical correspondence list.

Travel altar challenge
I love making small altars to take with me, I have quite a few, but lately I've been feeling the itch to make a new one. @breelandwalker posted an article that really jumpstarted the creative process again. So I present to you: the travel altar challenge! I broke up the steps to creating a pocket altar into 19 weeks (or days if you have the spoons) and I'm planning on making a new travel/pocket altar for myself.
Will you join me in the challenge?
The list below is my basic list with some ideas added to hopefully inspire you. Feel free to leave out what doesn't work for you, add what you're missing and do things out of order if needed. Every number is a day/week, depending on if you want to go fast or slow.
pick a theme and/or purpose: This can either be for a specific power or deity, or can be for a specific kind of magic, such as sea witchery or kitchen witchery. You can also choose for a specific purpose instead, such as when you’re staying in a hotel/family home, or one that fits into your planner. Or if you want to make it more challenging, your theme can be the Starry Night by van Gogh, or an altar completely made of paper or clay.
make a list of what must be on/in an altar What are the necessities you need when practising magic? What would you like the altar to have?
choose a container Now that you have your list of necessities, you can guess a bit how big of an altar you need. You can choose a box, altoid tin, jewellery case, cosmetics case, crocheted bag, whatever you can think of.
decorate the outside if needed/wanted
decorate the inside if needed/wanted
representation of deity/spirit/animal/mythological creature/yourself a small focal icon for your altar. This can be an artwork glued into the lid or on a scrabble tile, a carved bead, a small statue made from clay, or simply a picture of yourself. Get creative!
divination method a tiny divination method that fits the altar. Think tiny tarot cards, a pendulum from a shell or ring, tiny runestones.
cleansing method this can be a herb blend that you sprinkle around, a cleansing spray, incense
offering blend either for your deities/spirits, or for the world around you as a thank you for using the space.
charging/anointing oil or water for when you need to make something you found – or yourself – more sacred or powerful
representation of the elements painted rocks or wooden disks, a feather, a leaf, a candle, and a shell, or instead of the elements something for the seasons, or the phases of the moon.
a SAFE candle holder and candle Fire safety is important, especially when you wish to use it outside or in someone else’s space.
incense something fragrant to set the tone. And again, fire safety is important!
altar cloth a thrifted scarf, a doily, a scrap of fabric, something to create a working surface with.
add a text/prayer/poem this can be on the inside of the lid, rolled up as part of the offering blend on a tiny piece of paper, or simply folded up as a reminder and to read aloud.
representations for your altar/sacred space boundaries painted stones or wooden disks, shells, specific crystals, anything to make a ring of protection for you and your work
add some beads prayer/focus beads, power jewellery, or strands of beads for charging, or perhaps a witch’s ladder.
Put it all together is there something you’re missing? Did you have everything on your list? Or are some things too big and do they need to be switched out?
Cleanse and charge your new altar!
Please join me in being creative this spring. Tag me if you make something, I would love to see it and share it with the rest of witchblr.
Simple Protection Sigil
Introduction:
One of the things we all think of is protecting ourselves from negative energy whether it feels physical or could very well be mental. We all have to take measures in protecting the mind and body from these forces and to keep a positive outlook for you, your family, and friends.
Today I want to show how something as simple as a paper Sigil can help accumulate that positive energy and protection we all so desperately need in our home and work lives.
Making a Sigil for Protection:
A sigil can be made any way you feel most comfortable with making. A sigil is a symbol that means something to the castor, not necessarily for all to know. I usually always start out by drawing a circle and, going clockwise, I write out each letter of the alphabet until the letter 'z' is near center. Once finished I will circle the first letter of what I want my sigil to mean. For this one I spelled "Protect." I continue by drawing straight lines until the last letter where I will draw another circle.

Once I have the draft done I will then practice drawing the sigil freely and make any changes to my liking until I feel that the symbol not only looks pretty, but also feels powerful.

For the final draft I marked my sigil in blue marker as blue corresponds with protection, safe journey, and intuition. Before using a sigil, I always ground myself for a few minutes thinking of the intention of my newly created sigil, letting the intention flow from you and into the symbol itself.

Now time to place the sigil! One of my favourite places to put a sigil is on the front or back door of my home so that the effects can be felt by all who enter my home including friends, family, and the spirits that wander in. You can place it anywhere you feel like it is necessary and it can be out of sight on your person or somewhere hidden in the office, work, or school that you only know about or even out in the open. The intention of the sigil will last as long as you remember that it is there and if your intentions are still flowing into it regularly.
This method can be used to make any sigil using whatever other words that you can think of and using the colours of your choice for your correspondences.
Happy sigil-making!
The Phases of the Moon
(& it's meaning, magickally & scientifically)
The New Moon
The new moon is a sign of NEW BEGINNINGS.
Spiritually: The New Moon is a time of new beginnings and retreat. It is a time of rest and preparation for the coming month & whatever challenges it may bring. This is an excellent time to relax and stay off social media. Take time for yourself ♡
The Science: the Sun and Moon are both on the same side of Earth. Since the Sun isn't facing the Moon, it appears dark.
The Waxing Crescent
The Waxing Crescent is a time for SETTING INTENTIONS.
Spiritually: Focus on what you want in life - your hopes, dreams and aspirations. After recharging during the New Moon, the Waxing Gibbous provides an opportunity to plant your intentions for the following month.
The Science: When the sun moves closer to the new moon, it illuminates it again. The crescent appears, but it’s less than half illuminated, but it’s waxing or growing bigger into the first quarter moon.
First Quarter
The first quarter moon is about ACTION.
Spiritually: This is normally where you will start running into obstacles on your path. If you've set intentions, you'll likely start seeing the hurdles you need to overcome to reach your intention. This Moon is all about action, decisions and overcoming challenges. Ultimately, you've just got to do what needs to be done to overcome these challenges. Try to stay flexible, and focus on your intention, not on the hurdles.
The Science: The first quarter moon comes about a week after the new moon. It’s called this because the moon is one-quarter of its way through the monthly cycle.
Waxing Gibbous
The waxing gibbous moon is about REFINEMENT.
Spiritually: Continue on your path, stay flexible, and adjust as the situation calls for.
The Science: The waxing moon is just a phase away from being full. It’s easily seen during the day and at night.
Full Moon
The full moon focuses on HARVESTING what you’ve “planted.”
The Science: The full moon happens when the moon and sun are on opposite parts of the Earth. Since the sun is right across from it, the light illuminates it so that the moon looks full.
Spiritually: Since the moon and sun are at opposite sides, so are the zodiac signs. This can be a high tension time as a results, emotions are sure to run high, so try not to get attached to anything and try to stay emotionless and logical as possible.
Waning Gibbous
The waning gibbous moon reminds you to be GRATEFUL.
The Science: After the full moon, it starts getting less illuminated and wanes toward the last quarter moon and onto the new moon.
Spiritually: Now is the time to focus on what your thankful for, share that love around. Focus on what you've achieved thus far, and reflect on all the progress you've made, no matter how small. You'll likely be radiating love; try to resist splurging on big ticket items and instead spend time with those you love.
Third Quarter
The third-quarter moon helps you RELEASE from your struggles.
Spiritually: Let go of drama and focus on forgiveness and release. The Moon will continue to shrink over the course of the coming days and weeks until the New Moon - this energy means you must be ready to let go. If you've been hurt or angered in the past month, now is the time to release those grudges and anger so you are ready for receiving new intentions. This is a good time to clean - your home, your closet - whatever feels right. Focus on your friendships and remember, if it doesn't serve you, let it go.
The Science: The third-quarter or last-quarter moon is the reverse of the first quarter. That means it’s getting smaller.
Waning Crescent
The waning crescent moon focuses on SURRENDER.
The Science: This fraction of the moon is decreasing and on its way to being a new moon.
Spiritually: This is a time of rest and recuperation, reflect on the past month and begin preparing for the next. If you haven't achieved your intention for the month, this time can feel empty and disappointing, but don't let it get you down; you will do better next month.

#BeKind21: Donate to a Local Shelter
Today’s #BeKind21 message is from Catching Joy, Inc.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is the power of empathy and kindness – these are the driving forces that can change the world.
When I was four-years-old and holiday shopping with my family in Back Bay, Boston, I saw a man standing alone. He was dressed differently to my young mind. He wasn’t wearing a coat, hat, mittens, or socks. In one hand, he grasped a tin can, and in the other hand, he held a cardboard sign with one word: “help.” My parents and I put some change in his cup, and I heard a “clink” sound. I wondered to myself whether his cup was empty, how long he was there in the freezing weather without help, and if he was invisible to others because people seemed to be ignoring him. Before this experience, my sheltered young self did not know or understand that not every person has food, clothing, shelter, or support.
Since my earliest memories, I have been leading Catching Joy, Inc., a nonprofit that promotes volunteerism and acts of kindness beginning with kids, teens, and families. I organize hands-on service projects to help share the responsibility and joy of giving. For over a decade, I’ve helped mobilize an estimated 100,000 people, mostly youth. I aim to empower my generation to get informed, get involved, raise our voice, and take action. I’ve never forgotten the man I saw when I was four-years-old. His story is a part of my story, and now it’s part of your story, too.

Your kindness challenge today: Donate food, toiletries, or socks to a shelter serving people who are unhoused in your community. These necessities keep people safe and healthy, and also offer comfort and dignity.
In Kindness.
Maxwell Surprenant CEO + Co-Founder of Catching Joy, Inc.

Grimoire Ideas📖✨
since i’m starting to work on getting my own Grimoire better organized and figuring out what i think fits best in it for me, i feel like i should log some ideas that have helped me in my journey in hopes that it could help someone else just starting out. but just remember that your Grimoire is your own and personal to you and you alone so you don’t need to put everything in if it doesn’t vibe well with you or doesn’t fit into your craft. your book should hold things that are personal to you and your craft and what you believe and you don’t need to have every bit of knowledge in your book.

dorm friendly magick for broom-closeted student witches

Got roommates that aren’t into witchcraft/magick? Can’t burn incense in your dorm room? Don’t have time for elaborate rituals between studying for exams and writing papers? I’ve been there. Here are some of my favorite undercover spells and rituals for witches living that college life.
Journal Magick

Keep a manifestation journal! Find a journal that really speaks to you and makes you feel good every time you open it, whether it’s a bulky leatherbound tome or has a holographic cover and hot pink pages – what matters is that you feel a connection to it.
Every morning, write down the things you want to manifest in your journal in the present tense, as if they had already happened. [Note: this works better if you are writing the same thing every day for at least a few weeks. Consistent intent is key!]
For more information on this type of manifestation, just search “scripting” on YouTube and you’ll find approximately 642934 videos on the subject.
This is a really great technique for closet witches, because no one is going to be suspicious of you writing in a notebook – plus, it’s normal for people to want to keep their journals private.
Work with correspondences just like you would for a normal spell! You can print out photos of herbs, crystals, tarot cards, astrological signs, or moon phases that correspond to your intention and glue them into your journal (or draw them, if you have artistic talent). You could even get an essential oil that matches your intention and dab a drop of it on the page. You’re essentially creating an altar dedicated to your intention, just on paper instead of in a physical altar space.
Tap into the magick of color by writing your intentions with a pen in a corresponding color (green = abundance/wealth, pink = love and friendship, yellow = academic success, etc.).
Tea and Coffee Magick

Tea and coffee are already essentially potions, and no one is going to think twice about a college student drinking a lot of coffee/tea.
Coffee is associated with grounding and protection, and it adds energy to any spell it is added to. Black tea is associated with protection, courage, and abundance. Green and white tea have their own, slightly different magickal uses. Based on these correspondences, you can use coffee and tea as a base for undercover potions!
For mental clarity and memory retention, brew a mixture of black coffee, lion’s mane, chaga, and ginger. For a caffeine-free alternative, brew an herbal tea with rosemary and peppermint.
To cleanse negative energy and release stress, brew a mixture of black coffee, Ashwagandha, cinnamon, tulsi or basil, and Eleuthero. This is based on a Four Sigmatic blend, lmao.
For a sneaky prosperity spell, brew a mixture of black coffee, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. Yes, that is essentially pumpkin pie spice, and yes, you can use a pre-mixed pumpkin pie blend instead of buying the individual spices.
I could go on, but you get the idea. You can customize your morning beverage to suit any magickal or spiritual need.
Most plants have medicinal uses that are the same or similar to their magickal uses. So if anyone asks, tell them you’re adding these extra herbs for their nutritional and/or medicinal value.
You can also charge your tea or coffee with crystals. Just set a small crystal associated with your intention (amethyst for mental clarity, black tourmaline for protection, citrine for prosperity, etc.) next to the mug for a few minutes, or place it on top of your coffee maker. Be sure to charge both the crystal and the drink with your intention!
Candle Magick

If your dorm lets you have candles then congrats, because candle spells are both super powerful and a super easy way to hide your magick in plain sight.
Find a candle in a scent and color that match your intention. For example, you could use a pink, rose-scented candle for a love spell.
You can find custom spell candles made by witches for witches on Amazon and Etsy, and these have the added bonus of having been specifically created for magickal use. Some of the businesses I’ve personally had good experiences with are Art of the Root (available on Amazon), Esoteric Arts (available on Etsy), and Crystal Journey (Amazon).
That being said, I’ve gotten good results with $1.99 scented candles from Walmart, so please don’t feel like you need to spend a fortune on special candles for your spell to be successful.
In a pinch, an unscented white candle can be used for any intention. You can get these at the dollar store, and it’s never a bad idea to have a few on hand.
Oil Magick

Your dorm has a no-open-flames rule, so candles and incense are out of the question. No problem – you can get similar results with essential oils.
An essential oil literally contains the concentrated essence of a plant. Magickally speaking, this makes them a powerful way to add some oomph to your spells. They’re also commonly used for aromatherapy, so your roommate probably won’t be phased by you diffusing them in your dorm.
You can create custom EO blends the same way you would create an incense blend, by combining different plants based on their correspondences. You can also buy pre-mixed blends online if you’re feeling lazy or if you have a certain blend you know you’re going to use a lot like, say, a focus-enhancing blend for studying.
Another option, and one that’s more traditionally witchy, is to use magickal oils/ritual oils. A magickal oil is an oil that has been created for a specific magickal purpose – it’s like a spell in a bottle. A ritual oil is created for a specific use in magickal ritual. You can find tons of different ways to incorporate these oils into your daily life for some very subtle witchcraft.
You can create your own magickal oils by combining herbs, essential oils, and crystals that match your intention, or you can buy magickal oil blends from witch-owned businesses. Art of the Root has my absolute favorite oils – I have like six different blends, and they’re all ridiculously powerful.
Some ways you can use magickal oils: 1.) wear them as a body oil, 2.) diffuse them like you would an essential oil blend, 3.) use them to anoint and bless objects, like tests or study guides, 4.) add them to spiritual baths, and a million more. [Note: many magickal oils come with real herbs and resins in the bottle. These chunky bits could damage a diffuser, so do keep that in mind.]
Personally, I wear magickal oils on a daily basis in the place of perfume, since most of the ones I own smell really good. As I apply them, I say a small incantation to power them up. For example, if I’m wearing an attraction oil, when I put it on I’ll say something like, “I am powerfully attractive to the people and things that will improve my life.” Which oil I choose to wear depends on the day and the area of my life where I want some extra help.
Tech Magick

The nice thing about being a witch in the 21st century is that, if all else fails, you can keep your entire magickal practice contained on your laptop and/or phone. And even if you’re not doing 100% of your witchcraft in a virtual space, you can still use your technology as a tool in your practice.
Pinterest is the ultimate visualization tool. You can create a virtual altar to a deity or spirit guide by dedicating a Pinterest board to them, or create vision boards for the things you want to manifest, or create a brainstorming space to plan your full moon rituals… the possibilities are endless.
Keep your Book of Shadows and/or manifestation journal in a Word document. If you’re really concerned about privacy, you can even password protect these documents. Another pro of an electronic Book of Shadows is that most word processors have a “search” function that lets you look things up more easily.
Make a devotional playlist for a deity or spirit guide. Making Spotify playlists for my deities is one of my favorite devotional acts! I’ll put together all of the songs that remind me of that deity, and I can listen to it anytime, anywhere to instantly connect with them. And don’t be afraid to ask your deities what type of music they like – you may be surprised by the answer!
If any other witches have similar tips, feel free to add onto this! This is just stuff that I’ve found works for me, but magick is deeply personal and everyone will do things a little bit differently.
And not to shove my content in everyone’s faces, but I did just post a spell to enchant your school notebooks on my YouTube channel, so check that out if you’re interested!
