Extravagant was definitely a descriptor, but the word Madisyn would have used was ‘fun’. There was life in California, whereas the air here in Illinois seemed stagnant most days. Of course, there was the odd night out, where she could slip on her rose-colored glasses and feel something other than boredom and failure, but most days: nada. But maybe today would be different. “You own La Galleria!” She exclaimed, with recognition. “Madisyn Huang, owner of Meadowview Farm.” A lame title, but she was still working on a better introduction for herself.

Extravagant Was Definitely A Descriptor, But The Word Madisyn Would Have Used Was Fun. There Was Life

"Yea, I don't think we could ever compare to LA. Things are more extravagant there." The man said, as he turned his attention to the other. Had she not mentioned being new to Blue Harbor, her tone would've given her away. He couldn't help but wonder what the Cali girl was doing in town. He hadn't seen her around before, yet she looked...familiar somehow? "I don't believe we've had the pleasure. I'm Emir Yilmaz." he said, extending his hand out to her.

There’d be some miserable trolls out there who would have frowned in disapprovement at Madisyn’s desire to check in with the online world at any given moment. In fact a few of them — decrepit and wrinkly, like they were here the day Blue Harbor was founded — were inside pretending to give a shit about charity, when all they wanted was to boast about themselves and their millions in the bank account. Okay, sure, Madisyn wasn’t like the most attentive to the goings on in the town, but as an out and proud bisexual woman who attended fundraisers for organizations like The Trevor Project in the past, at least her being here made a lick of sense.

Plus, camaraderie and all for the farm. Winter was coming or whatever that sad homeless man on Game of Thrones said. She didn’t know, she didn’t watch it. Either way, the farm would struggle when the temperatures dropped to what she presumed would be Arctic conditions. So really, it’d be handy to keep in the good pockets of the town’s generous benefactors…

Regardless, it did mean she had to step outside to get some content filmed, away from judgemental looks and all that. TikTok wasn’t exactly the money making scheme that YouTube or her Instagram sponsorships were, but the more you gave, the nicer the algorithm was, and it was a bit of extra cash for fun things like shoes, not necessarily money she had to funnel into the care of the farm. Her camera was ready to go, and she was about to click on the timer when a voice —  hazy and slow — interrupted her.

“I am.” Her tone was a bit pressed as she looked up, scowling at the man, scrunching her nose as she scanned him over, itemizing every single detail about him on offer. He was cute, in a malnourished way, like he was just begging for someone to tuck him up in bed and feed him soup. But it was also mid-morning and he stunk of weed, bloodshot eyes the biggest tell-tale sign of them all. What a waste…

“Is there a problem with that?”

so maybe he hadn't made a career out of his time on the internet like madisyn huang had, but youtube.com/drzeemo has to be credited for his aspirations to become a comedian. his jackass-esque stunts along with a couple of his bedroom skits (some of which have been immortalized into the vernacular of late millennials and gen z's) were never quite monetized, but it did pave the way for him stepping up on a stage with a mic and a couple of jokes he'd written on the back of a starbucks receipt.

so he thinks he shares some similarities with the influencer who, for some reason, is now living in blue harbor and, last time he checked, looking after a farm. far from the glamour of a beauty guru or a food vlogger, but, well, she's still still on the internet. still somewhat relevant, or trying to be.

"are you filming a tiktok?" he says, approaching the influencer at one of the cocktail tables by the garden. there's light jazz playing on the outdoor speakers, concealed somewhere amongst the foliage. the faint smell of weed clings to the fibers of his wool sweater, eyes just a tad puffy, and confidence boosted for all the wrong reasons or he wouldn't dare approach madisyn first. she could just be checking a message or even her makeup on her front camera for all he knows but the question comes out before it could even pass through either hemisphere of his brain.

At some point, Madisyn had lost Dante. They had arrived together in style, and after a quick photoshoot by the clubhouse pool — until they were so rudely told to go back to the banquet hall unless they were members — did a few rounds of mingling before seemingly parting in the crowd. She couldn’t find him, but had no doubt he’d spot her; standing tall and bright in her patterned purple two piece, especially amongst the more drab styles of the party guests surrounding her.

It was days like these where Madisyn missed LA more than anything. The sense of style. Blue Harbor didn’t seem to have any of it.

Mingling got boring quickly, and though she wasn’t entirely sure she saw that two-faced bitch Grace Connor in the crowd, she knew better than to confront her in person, especially when the backdrop of such a scene was a charity fundraiser. But she had to think of a plan, clutching her martini glass with such force, as if squeezing out potential ideas. But she smiled politely at a man she had yet to come across. “Oh, like totally! You know, I’ve not had a chance to see the more charitable side of town yet, very quiet compared to, like, Los Angeles, where there was some sort of soiree or fundraiser like, every week!”

The Yilmaz loved to support a good cause. They each did it for various reasons, but Emir always did it out of genuine care. He was very big on supporting mental health and teen advocacy. His brother's passing impacted the family tremendously. Being only 11 years old at the time, he went through different ranges of emotions through his grieve. But maturing helped him see the importance of supporting mental health and the LGBTQ+ community. He was more than happy to have La Galleria provide some of the buffet options. He had come in with his mother and older brother, but after a few minutes he excused himself so that he could mingle with other people.

He greeted some business owners and familiar faces, making friendly conversation before he ended up at the bar when he realized he had an empty glass. It was no fun to socialize dry. "Can I have a glass of pinot grigio, please?" he asked the bartender before turning back to look at the people mingling in the hall. "This came together quite nicely...quite the turnout too."

His answer was so straight-forward yet vague, and Madisyn couldn't help but laugh. "You'd be a pretty shitty landscaper if you didn't." She pointed out. Who did jobs if they didn't love the work after all? Still, if there was more to his choice of vocation, Madisyn wasn't going to pry. Honestly, she didn't care all that much.

She frowned at the idea of other water features, even still water causing her stomach to churn, thoughts of Natalie Wood flashing through her mind. "We'll circle back to that, I need to think." Which of course, was the polite way of saying 'absolutely fucking not'. But this was just their first meeting after all, she was sure they'd work something out. "So, when can you start?"

In Madisyn's experience, you had to be loud to be heard. You had to go beyond the realms of what was considered normal civilized behaviour, going to the extremes to get noticed. It was what drew her to Dominik in the first place, and the attention he received — the accolades bestowed upon him even in their niche career — it was a drug to Madisyn. The highest highs she could imagine, until it all came crashing down, and she was forced to quit cold turkey. And like abstaining from any drug, withdrawal hurt like a bitch.

Suffice to say, Madisyn Huang did not deal well with not receiving attention. Even sneers and jabs aimed at her were better than being flat out ignored, especially by some hick bartender who didn't even have a memorable name. And she'd scream it from the rooftops until someone acknowledged her misfortune.

"Jeanie." She scoffed, her predictions right, rolling her eyes and continuing to blot at her makeup in the mirror. "That's the one. Weird just tonight? Clearly you've never interacted with her before. Bitch is a walking, talking freak-show." The alcohol in her system had made a grand old job of smearing her makeup across her lips, and she reached for a paper towel to wipe it off and start again, eyeing the woman beside her. Beautiful was the first word that came to mind. But there was something in her gaze that screamed trouble.

Caldwell. Now, that was a memorable name. But Madi couldn't pin-point where from, exactly. "Enchanté," She greeted with her signature smile, holding out her hand for Lainey to shake. "Madisyn Huang, I believe we both would have remembered meeting before."

In Madisyn's Experience, You Had To Be Loud To Be Heard. You Had To Go Beyond The Realms Of What Was

Aurora was one of the only places in Blue Harbor that truly felt like she was back in the city. She could order a drink and disappear into the crowd for a while, letting the technicolor lights wash over her and just forgetting for a while. The only negative was the staff-- particularly Jeanie. It was one thing to bump into her when they were both out, but when she was working, she was like... permanently smug.

It's not like Lainey expected a red carpet or even free drinks, but no acknowledgment whatsoever seemed ridiculous, even given their status as not-quite-friends. But Lainey was determined not to let it ruin her night. Instead, she ordered only from the other bartender and slipped back to the crowd.

In fact, she didn't even say anything-- being the bigger person, and all-- at least, until she heard some girl ranting in the bathroom. Lainey pushed out of the stall and stopped at the sink to wash her hands, glancing at the other, "You mean Jeanie?" she supplied. Lainey shook her head, "Seriously, she's being mad weird tonight. They're not even that busy and she's taking her sweet fucking time making every drink. Like a vodka soda's complicated," Lainey scoffed, shaking the water off her hands before she turned to the stranger.

"I'm Lainey Caldwell. Have we met?"

She was bored of this conversation now. Clearly Rachel didn't think she'd ever be capable of doing anything bad ever, and Madisyn simply didn't have the patience to explain it to her. Maybe she'd befriend a preschool teacher to get it into this woman's head that actions had consequences, and that profitting off someone's downfall was wrong. "Not just me babe, if you ever get a recommendation for a Raya application, you'd see what I mean." Drunk scrolling through the exclusive app had made it clear that a lot of famous faces — even in specific circles — were drawn to this little slice of midwestern nothingness, for whatever reason. The clerk manning the stall made their presence known, and Madi decided that enough was enough, putting down a bottle of each color on the surface, shooting Rachel a pointed look. "Well, see you around." And with swift payment of her purchases, walked away with the stall with the mental note to Google exactly who this Rachel Han was.

She Was Bored Of This Conversation Now. Clearly Rachel Didn't Think She'd Ever Be Capable Of Doing Anything

End.

Rachel didn't quite understand what the insinuation was other than maybe a her trying to say that she was profiting off Madisyn's 'misery.' It was truly the lack of accountability that didn't make the journalist feel super sympathetic. "Clout wasn't really something I was seeking, if you recall it was just supposed to be a special interest piece. They don't usually give those to people who are making the big bucks." Not that really any one in print media went into the field with a promise of large salaries. And unlike the other woman, she didn't do things in order to see how many likes and views she got on her articles. She raised a brow as Madisyn claimed that this place was up-and-coming. "Why do you think that? Because you decided to move here?" Rachel asked, her tone trying to become more genuine in asking rather than accusatory. The woman had reinvented herself twice already and though she'd gotten 'cancelled,' Rachel knew that when it came to social media stars they always found a way to stick around and shift target demographics. She wondered what Madisyn's demographic was this time.

Jack didn't know if it was much a case of having ‘the eye’ for things as it was being decently able to read clients—a skill that seemed to surprise. He supposed he couldn't blame them given his deficiencies in socialising and manners, but experience had taught him well. It was easy when gardens were involved. It was just every other topic of conversation he struggled with. He did have a couple of friends now though, if that was what he could call them, so he thought he might be getting better at it though. Shrugging, he gave her the standard answer. “I like plants.”

That was a fair enough response. Personally, he liked the sound. A small creek ran down the back of the woods on the edge of his property and it was one of his favourite features, but it clearly wasn't for everyone. “Alright. No running water. What about still water? A pond, a wishing well, anything like that?”

It was true, Madisyn didn't come to this thrift store to hear this woman babble. She had came to find something decent to purchase, only for the only item deemed appropriate to be so in her eyes was firmly in this stranger's grasp. As a result — or perhaps a punishment — Madi didn't say anything, letting the silence extend out in the space between them to an almost suffocating degree, wondering if she could get this apparent yoga-lover to feel so embarrassed she'd abandon the pants and leave the store altogether.

Unfortunately, she seemed resilient, and Madi could feel her patience waning slightly thin by this whole interaction. But at this point, it wasn't even about the leggings, just the satisfaction of winning for the sake of doing so. "But then you'd feel super guilty if you didn't get back into right? And they just hung up in your closet, undesirable and unused. Poor pants have already been donated once, seems like a lonely little life, don't cha think?"

"yeah, I Used To Go Pretty Often, But Then Work Got Busy, And I" Jia's Words Trailed Off, Her Voice Softening

"yeah, i used to go pretty often, but then work got busy, and i…" jia's words trailed off, her voice softening as she cast an apologetic glance at the woman standing across from her. the half-finished sentence hung in the air for a moment, her thoughts shifting quickly from the once-frequented yoga studio to the present awkwardness. "and now i’m rambling," she added hastily, a sheepish smile tugging at her lips. "sorry, you didn’t come here to listen to me babble." the silence that followed felt heavier than jia expected. she could feel it stretching between them, making the moment more awkward than it needed to be. but the woman in front of her had poisonous smile, waiting for a moment to strike. a familiar twinge of nervousness settled in her chest, and even though she knew she had already apologized for talking too much, she couldn’t help but try to fill the silence again. anything to keep it from getting more uncomfortable. "one of my best friends teaches classes there," jia said, her words spilling out in a rush. she gestured vaguely, as if the motion could somehow explain everything. "at the studio, i mean. they’re always so nice and relaxing, the classes. i really miss them." she hesitated for a second, then continued. "i’m hoping to go back soon, you know ? i figured, maybe foolishly, that some new clothes would do the trick."

Madisyn was unsure if it was the clearly cursed crystals that had caused the server going down or if the person behind the counter was bullshitting her. Considering the line of business, the influencer veered very much toward the latter. It was in their entire line of work, wasn't it? Scamming people with a few bits of shiny rock and floral-scented oils that were supposed to like, cure cancer, or some shit.

"Oh that's so fucking rich!" She exclaimed with an extravagant eye roll, "How many times have you been using that, like, old chestnut to shif the blame?" Despite the stumbling of the unfamilar phrase she once heard years ago on TV, Madisyn's tone was brash, loud, unforgiving and unapologetic at once. She gestured to the bag she threw down on the surface. "These fuckers. They're supposed to bring me peace and joy and luck. I got them like, two weeks ago. Madisyn Huang."

Giselle's System Had Been Falling Behind Due To An Influx Of Orders, But That Was Nothing Compared To

giselle's system had been falling behind due to an influx of orders, but that was nothing compared to the morning's error, need updates message which flashed across the screen. for the last three hours, they had been doing nothing but standing on sore feet, the heels of their ballet slippers alternating in their tapping, a hushed whisper to their current cashier to go in the back and start restocking. quiet huff of annoyance, but at least they would be left alone to deal with this issue. or so they thought. thought bloody well too soon, didn't they?

by this point, giselle could tell by the marching feet, the posturing, and the flushed expression what was about to rain down upon them. thank god they hadn't worn a turtleneck; otherwise, they would've overheated straight away from the hot flash of the upcoming tiff. there'd be no avoiding it. "for what?" giselle lowered their glasses to the tip of their nose, peering at the woman with one arched brow, thanks. "you'll need to be more specific, love. i've got a whole store down right now. and if you broke it by throwing it like that? you just bought it again."

practised smile. customer service wasn't their strongest suit. they weren't certain how long they could hold out, but they could give it the old college try, or whatever americans said. "name, crystal, date of purchase. c'mon, let's hear it."

they took out a notepad. very professional. leaned over the counter, poised with their pen. can't wait to get yelled at. giselle, whatever you do, don't bloody laugh.

In a town like this, and being the person that Madisyn was, it was hard for her to make friends. To keep friends. Ziana hd been the light at the end of a very cold, dark, lonely tunnel, and Madi wasn't about to be abandoned into the pitch blackness again. It helped, of course, who her family was, as well as the disgraced influencer's friendship with Max. But, regardless, the woman made excellent company when needed.

"Oh, puh-leese," She scoffed, appearing to take the comment on the chin, managing to mask her irritation behind a pearly white smile. As if this aged little ice-cream shop could afford Madisyn's advertising rates, or even have something worth offering her for a sponsorship. "I am here to discuss supplies actually, since I'm the shiny new owner of Meadowview Farm!"

In A Town Like This, And Being The Person That Madisyn Was, It Was Hard For Her To Make Friends. To Keep

The sound of her nickname being thrown into the air caused the raven haired woman to turn quickly in her chair. Not many people had the priviledge of calling her by anything other than Ziana, though she had a feeling the pitch of the squeal and sound of clacking heels on the floor—she knew exactly who it was. Once her eyes set onto Madisyn, her smile felt like it couldn't be contained by the parsmeters of her face. Getting to her feet quickly she wrapped the other woman into a tight embrace, ignoring how many times she said the word 'like' in a single sentence.

"Madi, it's like, so good to see you," she teased back, looking over the other woman whom she hadn't seen in years. "What are you giong to bother the owner about? Trying to squeeze in a brand deal of some sort?"
