Life was so much easier when there was always a guaranteed PR package in the mailbox. Back when people begged Madisyn to promote their brands on her channel, and she got freebies without spending a cent. But now? The only PR request she got was for some fugly wellington boots not even her grandma would be caught dead in, which she guessed was in line with her farmer brand, but not to who she was as a person. No, if Madisyn wanted things, she had to buy them like everyone else, and on a budget.

Thrifting was very in, very chic. Whilst she doubted Blue Harbor had any hidden gems the LA scene was known for, she was sure there'd be at least a few upmarket things, eyeing a pair of Lululemon leggings that were an absolute steal at the price being offered. They weren't exactly Madi's color, but when she put them down and someone else jumped at them, she couldn't bear the thought of letting them go.

"Omigod, aren't these so adorbz? I mean, they say blue is for everyone, but workout gear? Iunno girl, but brave choice."

Surely there was something else that wasn't entirely hideous and had a decent label attached, if Madisyn just bothered looking, but once she decided she wanted something, she couldn't give it up without a fight. A spoiled brat, her brother had referred to her as during an AMA session on her subreddit, which was one of the few things she had read about herself online that really hurt her feelings, but only because of who said it rather than the what the actual words were.

But if the world agreed that Madisyn was a spoiled brat, then they clearly just never wanted something enough.

"They are so cute. No other colors though?" When the woman mentioned yoga, she hummed, nodding maybe a hint too enthusiastically. "Oh totes. You go to Lotus & Light? Those classes can be fucking brutal babe. But y'know, you look like a tough cookie. I went to one, everyone was dressed in like monotone. Greys and blacks, like it was some yoga themed funeral." She laughed, "Any reason you stopped?"

IT WAS JIA'S BI MONTHLY visit to thrift haven to see if anything new and exciting had popped up on the hangers. before she started browsing they dropped off a bag of clothes she'd decided to donate and it was something she had done for the past few years. it was a small thing, but something she felt like she could do to help out. after chatting with the worker, exchanging pleasantries, she began browsing the rows of clothes to see if something caught her eye. jia had a vague idea of what she was looking for, which made her walk over to the work-out section. her long overdue talk with thalia showing her that she needed to find time to take care of herself, even if it was hard to prioritise. the moment she saw a pretty shade of blue her interest was peaked. the leggings looked brand new and jia felt confident that it would suit her well. but, just as she went to place them in her bag a voice interrupted. jia hadn't seen the woman before, but the sharp sweetness to her tone immediately made her weary. it was as if everything about her was calculated, from the curl of her hair to the way she spoke. "i find them kinda cute," she replied hesitantly. "i'm trying to get back into yoga."

It was true, Madisyn didn't come to this thrift store to hear this woman babble. She had came to find something decent to purchase, only for the only item deemed appropriate to be so in her eyes was firmly in this stranger's grasp. As a result — or perhaps a punishment — Madi didn't say anything, letting the silence extend out in the space between them to an almost suffocating degree, wondering if she could get this apparent yoga-lover to feel so embarrassed she'd abandon the pants and leave the store altogether.

Unfortunately, she seemed resilient, and Madi could feel her patience waning slightly thin by this whole interaction. But at this point, it wasn't even about the leggings, just the satisfaction of winning for the sake of doing so. "But then you'd feel super guilty if you didn't get back into right? And they just hung up in your closet, undesirable and unused. Poor pants have already been donated once, seems like a lonely little life, don't cha think?"

"yeah, I Used To Go Pretty Often, But Then Work Got Busy, And I" Jia's Words Trailed Off, Her Voice Softening

"yeah, i used to go pretty often, but then work got busy, and i…" jia's words trailed off, her voice softening as she cast an apologetic glance at the woman standing across from her. the half-finished sentence hung in the air for a moment, her thoughts shifting quickly from the once-frequented yoga studio to the present awkwardness. "and now i’m rambling," she added hastily, a sheepish smile tugging at her lips. "sorry, you didn’t come here to listen to me babble." the silence that followed felt heavier than jia expected. she could feel it stretching between them, making the moment more awkward than it needed to be. but the woman in front of her had poisonous smile, waiting for a moment to strike. a familiar twinge of nervousness settled in her chest, and even though she knew she had already apologized for talking too much, she couldn’t help but try to fill the silence again. anything to keep it from getting more uncomfortable. "one of my best friends teaches classes there," jia said, her words spilling out in a rush. she gestured vaguely, as if the motion could somehow explain everything. "at the studio, i mean. they’re always so nice and relaxing, the classes. i really miss them." she hesitated for a second, then continued. "i’m hoping to go back soon, you know ? i figured, maybe foolishly, that some new clothes would do the trick."
