I just found out there was a Sandman who came between Wesley Dodds and Dream of the Endless who was hit was some depressing retcons and forgotten, and to my surprise, this Silver Age Sandman was made by the King of Comics of himself. Can you discuss some creations who are obscure or fell flat oddly given their creator? Jack Kirby probably has a few dozen more by himself, and off hand I can think of that animated movie by George Lucas he described as "Star Wars for girls".

Dracula so overshadowed Bram Stoker’s entire output that it’s easy to forget that he not only created the most memorable vampire story, but the first truly modern, memorable mummy story, too: Jewel of the Seven Stars. 

Everything we think of as a mummy story was there. Eerie magic, reincarnation, terrible spirits of evil sorcerous tyrants in modern times. The only element of the traditional mummy story that doesn’t come from Bram Stoker’s Seven Stars was the idea of lovers who reincarnate forever, which comes from H. Rider Haggard’s extraordinary She (which was Freud’s favorite novel). 

Jewel of the Seven Stars may be one of the most scrupulously researched Egypt novels of all time. One of Bram Stoker’s good friends was Egyptologist Sir William Wilde (who was also, incidentally, the father of Oscar Wilde). 

Bram Stoker, at the end of his life, also wrote a very strange novel about pagan cults in modern Britain called Lair of the White Worm. At that point, his illness was starting to affect him so I don’t necessarily recommend reading it, but it was the source material for a very good movie featuring a young Peter Capaldi and Hugh Grant. 

Also, If you were to ask Robert E. Howard aficionados what his best stories were, you’ll get a lot of different answers…but there seems to be a consensus that the best stuff he did were the Westerns that he wrote at the end of his life, like “Vultures of Wahpeton.” 

In fact, if Robert E. Howard had not tragically ended his own life, I’ve always been of the opinion he would have transitioned away from sword and sorcery and weird fiction into being a Texas regional writer, which we already started to see happen - he hadn’t written Conan for a while by the time he died. That seemed to be a pretty common trajectory for Weird Tales and weird fiction writers: switch from weird fiction to being a regional writer, like how Hugh B. Cave went from a horror writer to being a guy who mainly wrote novels about his beloved Florida Keys and the Caribbean.
