and hell followed. character introductions
Adrian Howell
when Adrian was twelve, he had a best friend — the kind of friend that a kid would kill for. he and Mal did everything together. until Malcolm vanished. the police and his parents called him a runaway. after all, a bag was packed, his bedroom window left open. but Adrian knew better. he knew that Malcolm would never leave, at least not without saying goodbye.
now twenty-two, Adrian is a graduate student, working with at-risk kids in Detroit. what happened to Malcolm changed his life, and he wants to help kids who are in situations like his former best friend was in.
he doesn't know that he's being followed.
Malcolm Ellis
when Malcolm was twelve, he had a best friend — and his best friend saved his life. when he was taken from his family, taken from everything he ever knew, it was the memory of Adrian that kept him going. and one day, he swore, he would find his friend again. finally having escaped from his new owners, Malcolm tracks Adrian down.
but ten years of brainwashing, of being the subject of experimentation, have left their marks, both physical and mental. he doesn't know what to do with Adrian, except protect him.
and he knows this can't last forever.

"I'm fem-presenting!" "My presentation is masculine!" "I present androginously!" well I forgot there was a presentation today and it's too late to put anything together
y’all know that trope where two people have been separated/apart and when they finally see each other they’re practically clinging to each other and you can practically feel the happiness and relief radiating off of them? that’s my crack
