So recently, I’ve played around with the thought of composing electronic music.

But I’ve run into an issue: I know nothing about this stuff.

I know I need two things: A Bluetooth MIDI keyboard and an app to support it. Anything else I’m missing?

Roadblocks:

I don’t have a PC

Restricted to (up to) $5 iPad apps (must be compatible with the iPad Pro)

I don’t own any instruments (unless you count my out-of-tune violin from 7th grade)

No music keyboard

No proper microphone

No decent headphones/earbuds (I’ll figure that out later)

No singing talent (can’t really fix that)

iPad music-making apps I’ve tried

Some good, some bad. I wrote the pros and cons for reference.

Reason Compact: The note grid feature is amazing, but it’s awful hard to find that anywhere else.... (also not gonna pay $10 for the Europa patch, that’s ridiculous)

GarageBand: Loops are convenient, but I’m willing to sacrifice for more features

Synth One: Complicated, but the loops are a plus...

Figure: I really liked this one, but the company who ran it went bankrupt and can no longer support their apps.

Take: I can’t sing for love or money, I have no microphone other than some half-dead Apple earbuds, and I have no instruments. (Also, the company went bankrupt- same people who ran Figure & Allihoopa)

Soundtrap: Loops were great, but the high price of premium broke the deal

Features I’m looking for

Drum sequence grid

Note sequence grid (like Reason Compact’s)

Loops

No IAP

MIDI compatibility

Also, how do I choose which keyboard is right for me? I’m sure it ain’t just a “wand picks the wizard” kind of thing, right?

P1: “I don’t think you understand the depravity of the situation at hand!”

P2, to P1: “No, YOU don’t understand. We have a team of superheroes and god-monsters! For fuck’s sake, we have a literal angel on our side!”

P3: “Seraph”

P2, to P3: “Shut up.”

P2, to P1: “But you get the point- this isn’t as big of a deal as you think. We handle shit like this almost every month.”

P3: “Considering it takes more than a month to stop an apocalypse, we don’t really have that good of a track reco-“

P2, to P3: “I SAID SHUT UP. DAMMIT, WHO’S SIDE ARE YOU EVEN ON?! Where’s that shit memory you usually have?!”

P3: “I fixed it.”

P2, to P3: “Well, unfix it, because you aren’t helping.”

You thought I was dead?

I THINK NOT!

I’m back, after a short hiatus.

I created another blog, @sleep-deprivation-arts . I’ll put my Inktober scheduled stuff there.

This account has now become a backfill area.
