Analysis of Darkness Powers, Abilities, and Locations: In Pertaining to the Preservation of Memory

Deepsight is the ability to cause the history of an object, entity, or place to physically manifest.

The Nightmares are literally what they sound like- echoes of the past, meant not as enemies but as reflection points to grow stronger.

Even Stasis can be seen as preservation method- the manipulation of entropy, preventing cell decay and freezing the past in its place.

Witness’s Taking is a bit harder to pin down… According to the Altar of Reflection’s reaction to the Tablets of Ruin, it is the power to move worlds from one reality to another. This ability might tie into Stasis and Deepsight, a “safe” means of transporting places with pivotal history. The “safety” of this method is still under investigation.

Oryx’s Taking is purging everything from an entity by shooting them to an alternate reality and having them hollowed out by the Deep. Makes sense that it isn’t as connected to memory as the Witness’s more complete ability- the Worm that Oryx learned to Take from didn’t have all the info either!

Rhulk’s museum aboard the Throneworld Pyramid might be the best instance of memory tying to Darkness that the Hidden have ever recorded. The philosophy of remembering our past and growing stronger from it is echoes throughout Rhulk’s messages to the Witness, from his Lubraean mural to the rib of the Fundament Leviathan.

Even in the Ascendant Plane, one can find echoes of memory displayed. The Ascendant Plane is an alternate realm to that in which we live. Strewn amongst the Sea of Screams are small islands of mirrored reality, often of historical significance to its explorers. Throneworlds are carved-out spaces within the Ascendant Plane, created by beings of sufficient paracausal strength. Wether on purpose or just by coincidence, these Throneworlds mirror the minds and memories of their creators, acting as physical manifestations of their past. This connection is still under scrutiny, and is regarded as speculation in most circles.
