Banning Stuff Is A Slippery Slope, And If You First Allow Some Things To Be Banned, The People Doing

Banning stuff is a slippery slope, and if you first allow some things to be banned, the people doing the banning will ask for more, and more, and more. They are not doing it "for the children". They are doing it to control what other people have access to, and rely on manipulating your feelings to get you to go along with it. And once you have gone along with it once, it easier to persuade you to go along with it again, and again, even when it reaches the point where you are no longer sure why the thing they want to ban is bad. You have already given them the power to decide for you, so you have to keep trusting that they know best, right? After all, you did agree that the first things were bad, so surely these things have to be bad somehow as well? And once they get to things you like, you might even be gaslit to feel guilty because you liked it. After all, if they want to ban it, it must be bad, right? Wrong. Don't fall for this. Even stuff you don't like can have value in ways you cannot understand or predict. (If for nothing else than to serve as a buffer to protect the things you do like.) The only way to gain proper insight into a subject is to step outside your echo chamber, and read things you might not agree with. You might still disagree with it after reading it, but your opinion holds more weight because it is now more informed. Don't let other people do your thinking for you.

Hi! RE: your journal about the right for lolicon fiction to exist even if you disapprove of it, would you say it can also exist for titillation purposes, or do you stand by it for artistic reasons, or for the purpose of exploring dark themes only? I always thought you were saying the former, but I just wanted to ask. It's chill if you don't wanna answer this. Have a good day!

Here we are, 15 years on from that blog entry, and I still haven't read any lolicon, I'm afraid, so I have no idea about its themes. The context was whether you should be sent to prison for owning lolicon. What I said back then was,

In this case you obviously have read lolicon, and I haven't. I don't know whether you're writing from personal experience here, and whether you have personally been incited to rape children or give inappropriate hugs by reading it. (I assume you haven't. I assume that Chris Handley, with his huge manga collection, wasn't either. I've read books that claimed that exposure to porn causes rape, but have seen no statistical evidence that porn causes rape -- and indeed have seen claims that the declining number of US rapes may be due to the wider availability of porn. Honestly, I think it's a red herring in First Amendment matters, and I'll leave it for other people to argue about.) Still, you seem to want lolicon banned, and people prosecuted for owning it, and I don't. You ask, What makes it worth defending? and the only answer I can give is this: Freedom to write, freedom to read, freedom to own material that you believe is worth defending means you're going to have to stand up for stuff you don't believe is worth defending, even stuff you find actively distasteful, because laws are big blunt instruments that do not differentiate between what you like and what you don't, because prosecutors are humans and bear grudges and fight for re-election, because one person's obscenity is another person's art.

Because if you don't stand up for the stuff you don't like, when they come for the stuff you do like, you've already lost.

This is a bit long. Apologies. I'd meant to talk about other things, but I started writing a reply this morning to the letter that follows

Hour #8: the Botan Dōrō

Summary:

Izuna visited Tobirama at night, with a red botanical lantern in his hand.

Hour #8: The Botan Dr

Author: greenchair (@greencuttingmat) Rating: Teen And Up Fandom: Naruto Relationship: Senju Tobirama/Uchiha Izuna Other Tags: Major Character Death, non-con, Ghost Bride, ghost wedding, ghost, Izuna was already dead, forced marriage, hence the non-con, ghost, Japanese mythology Word Count: 1,958

The cicadas cried through the night. They screamed for love and the end of their life. Inside the house, Tobirama was calmly writing letters to the Daimyo. The summer this year was particularly harsh, and he foresaw a freezing winter, so he would like to <s>beg</s> haggle for a better deal. He would prefer to finish the letter quickly and then get some sleep before tomorrow's battle with the Uchiha. He would need all of his focus to fight Izuna.

Suddenly, from the periphery of his sight, he saw a light shining behind the shoji door to the garden.

"Excuse me," said a man with a voice so familiar and yet so impossible to be here. They had never met in their on the grounds of either clan. It would have been too treacherous, too bold.

<i>What were the guards doing?</i>

Tobirama pulled out a kunai, but he didn't open the door. He didn't feel any killing intent, or anything at all from the other person. <i> Was it a genjutsu?</i>

"If you won't open the door, I will come in myself." The other person announced.

Tobirama created a bunshin to stand in his place while he hid in the ceiling.

The door slid open and the person outside walked in. His steps were silent as if he was tiptoeing. His heels were covered by his long mantle. The mantle was not buttoned, just closed from the wrong side. And his face was shadowed by the light of the large lantern, as red as the spring peony.

It was Izuna.

"Tsk tsk tsk. Don't hide, Tobirama. What are you afraid of?" He said, walking right onto the kunai. Tobirama's clone would have moved away, but it was frozen in place.

Red blood bled like a wave and soaked his mantle. It was where Tobirama had last stabbed him.

Izuna smiled and looked right into the eyes of the real Tobirama.

And then Tobirama felt warm like he was sunbathing. He blinked. In front of his eyes were his brushes. He had fallen asleep on his desk and the evening sun casted shadows into the room.

There was no Izuna.

Hour 7: Liminal Spaces and the Crossing Thereof

Summary: The Senju Ghost had started haunting the Uchiha settlement, and they were eager to put a stop to it. So eager in fact, that they were willing to offer up Madara as a ghostbride.

Hour 7: Liminal Spaces And The Crossing Thereof

Author: @titaniafaeriequeen Rating: Mature Fandom: Naruto Relationship: Uchiha Madara/Senju Tobirama Other Tags: fluff, ghost marriage, sort of, misunderstandings, demisexual Madara, Uchiha Izuna lives Word Count: 7,802 (complete)

Testing his newest invention, Tobirama had eventually moved further away from the Senju settlement, pushing to find the limits of its range. It was during this that an unprecedented opportunity had presented itself—Uchiha Madara was rapidly moving towards his location. Who better to pit himself against to test both the endurance, and whether or not the Sharingan could spot it? Tobirama could not really think of anyone else, except perhaps Uchiha Izuna, although the younger Uchiha was, at least by Tobirama’s estimate, a fraction or two below Madara in skill.

Tobirama waited until Madara burst into the clearing, then he set off in a panicked rush. Minus the actual panic. And with the addition of an injury to his leg that he didn’t actually have. Feigning being hurt and exhausted, he made sure to not move any faster than that Madara quickly gained on him. Then, as if he had come to the realization that he would not manage to outpace the Uchiha, he stopped on a branch, leaning heavily on one leg, brandishing a kunai in one hand, and moving the other through a long series of hand seals. Madara crashed into him before he could finish the jutsu.
