Hey if you're not physically disabled and just ND, please don't say "cr*ppling," or any variations thereon, since it's ableist toward physically disabled people. "Disabling," and "incapacitating," are two better words to use instead.

(It took me a while to figure it out; anon was bothered by this post.)

Okay, sure, I’ll try to do that. That said, I want to encourage people engaged in anti-ableism efforts that take the form of asking people not to use certain words to put their energies elsewhere. Firstly, I think they make the disability advocacy community inaccessible to a lot of people, since having to relearn which words are “allowed” is overwhelming and particularly difficult for people who have limited access to words in the first place.

Secondly, every time I’ve seen this implemented it…hasn’t made anyone less ableist? People who scrupulously remove “crazy” from their vocabulary in favor of “irrational” still treat the people they’re talking about like unpersons. Often the recommended replacement words are just as good at suggesting “less valuable person” as the words they replaced. I think there’s some value in asking “does our use of words surrounding disability to mean ‘bad thing’ come from a place of treating disabled people like tragedies?” and often it does, but that doesn’t mean that challenging that mindset is as easy as changing out the words. Thirdly, I think it emphasizes the wrong concerns. I saw a newspaper headline the other day saying “the president’s plan will be a crippling blow to the economy” and one about the “crippling burden of student debt”. I’d think that the fact the president’s plan includes making it harder to get SSI, or the fact disabled students are way less likely to graduate and likelier to end up in debt, is a much more urgent problem than the turn of phrase used in the headline. 

Lastly, it seems like the anti-words advocacy often pretends at a false consensus in disability activism. There are physically disabled people who are bothered by that newspaper headline and those who are not. There are mentally ill people who are bothered by use of crazy and some who couldn’t care less. But no one ever says “hey, that word bothers me personally because people have used it to be mean to me”, they say “it’s ableist towards physically disabled people,” as if all physically disabled people agree on this (or as if the ones who disagree are just obviously confused poor souls and don’t merit a mention). “There are physically disabled people who dislike the phrase ‘crippling anxiety’ and there are physically disabled people who don’t care and there are physically disabled people who have, themselves, described their anxiety as crippling” is much more accurate, but less compelling.

because i am a sucker for this trope

their parents being their biggest shippers (it’s so cute oh my goddd)

^ them telling their parents they’re dating and they’re like really happy and stuff and then “oh B you aren’t allowed at sleepovers anymore btw” (queue a whiny come onnnnn)

them + their friends going on a trip or something , so A has to room with one friend and B with the other. butttt their friends are dating so they beg them to switch and. they end up having to room together (but there’s only one bed hmmm)

“you’re such an idiot” “i’m a cute idiot, you said so yourself”

them playing a game together, it’s like their thing, but after they start dating A starts going easier on B, not calling them out on all the rules they’re breaking etc, and B says “why are you going easy on me” “well because-“ “name. i love your competitive cocky self, bring it back”

“my sister thinks that we’re dating” “my parents think that we’re dating” “our teacher thinks that we’re dating” “wait really?” “why do you think we aren’t allowed to sit together anymore?” “because you keep staring at me during class dumbass”

A dropping very very obvious hints but of course, B is oblivious as fuck so they don’t realise, and when A leaves all their friends are like “HOW STUPID ARE YOU???”

my favorite free tools for writers

hello, hello! hope you're doing well.

today i am bringing you another list with my top 3 favorite (free!) tools that I find helpful for each phase of writing a novel.

brainstorming phase

Fantasy Names Generator - not only for fantasy (you can also generate real names). this website is just... amazing! it helps you come up with names for characters, places and locations, descriptions, generate traits, outfits (yes, outfits!!), and probably something else you could ever think of.

The Story's Hack - this one is so cool! you can generate names for everything, create your own generator, and practice writing through writing exercises! plus, you can save your generated names to see later, and you earn coins for each idea generated (you can later buy themes - dark, snow, forest, etc)

RanGen - my last favorite generator on this list is RanGen! you can generate plots, appearances, archetypes, love interests, cities, worlds, items, and more.

developing the idea phase

Bryn Donovan - in this blog you can find master lists under the tag "master lists for writers". it is so helpful when you first start developing the characters and need to find the right words to describe them and to find some quirks and flaws!

Writers Write (350 character traits) - again, this is so helpful!

Story Planner - ah, the number of times I've talked about this website... please, PLEASE take a look at it, you won't regret it. this website has literally everything you need to fully develop your idea with outlines for you to fill in step by step.

writing phase

Colleen Houck (80+ barriers to love) - need more romace conflict? there you go!

Cheat Sheets for Writing Body Language - so, you know how your character's feeling, but don't know how he'd physically act? check out this list!

Describing Words - honestly, this is a lifesaver. don't you struggle to find the right word to describe something? well, with this website all you have to do is to type the object you're trying to describe and see which description fits better to you!

revising phase

Language Tool for Google Docs - i know we all have heard about google docs before, but the truth is, it's almost impossible to find free softwares to check grammar and spelling. so, google docs is useful, because it automatically revises it for us, and it's completely free. plus, you can add adds-on, such as "language tool".

Unfortunately, there's only one (free) tool that I actually enjoy for the revising phase. if you know some others, please let me know so that I can try them out and feature in this list.

exporting phase

Google Docs - i find google docs very easy to format and export to .epub, so i'd recommend using it as a free tool.

Reedsy - this is also a free tool available online. all you have to do is to write down each chapter (copy and paste) or import your word document. it will format the document to your liking and export it to pdf, epub and mobi.

my writing process is the most inefficient thing in the universe but it's Right, ok. the most efficient inefficient. it's about the clip studio paint layers. it's about the merging. it's about the the the. lineart layers. so many of them. but make it microsoft word

i've finally resurrected from the ashes and reactivated my old blog. though, it's been a long time and now i seem to have forgotten how things worked around here - but that's alright, we'll relearn the ropes along the way.

my fandoms, priorities and hfx's have changed significantly, so i'll do my best to keep traces of my old things while i try to make this experience more comfortable.

I tried to delete a sideblog. Figured that's what it meant by delete "blog" and that something that would delete the entirety of my FIVE PLUS YEARS OF WORK on here would take more than entering my email address and password, but that's what I get for trying to be productive and organized while sleepy, I guess. Everything I've worked for on here has been destroyed, and that's my fault. Thanks for having such a clear way to delete sideblogs.

I crawl back after a slog through articles reassuring me that no, sweetie, there is literally zero way in the universe to retrieve your posts because all of this has magically achieved permadeath, and then you slap me in the face by FORCING me to divulge interests and follow people IMMEDIATELY?! I already know who I'm going to follow. I never followed topics. Fuck you for trying to force Social Media Experience down my throat, fuck off, and have a great fucking vanilla-extract fueled day, you stupid hellsite. Thank you for nothing in exchange for my half a decade of loyalty and dedication.

So, yeah! Time to struggle to remember half of the hundreds of people I followed (in a time where this happened because my brain is bad and I forget things within two seconds), reconfigure everything so it's not Social Mediaing me to death, and start all the way over!

It's not like I was super popular on here, but this was far and away my social media where I was most popular and had some semblance of community and some pretense of a chance of *gags* marketing my books. Now that's all gone. At a time when I am having a breakdown about my finances and an existential crisis about my writing and my ability to produce it, I get to restart from Absolute Zero!

both are equally strange

the state is a tiny little cryptid thing

the rive is a monster that spans new york, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. also washington crossed it once and that was like kinda a big deal i guess. like crossing the rubicon in rome.

the state tries to me more important with its “im the first state!!!” bs (seriously its even on the fucking license plates) but we all know. its the river.
