pairing: taehyung x reader / word count: 5.5k / genre: friends to lovers
summary: Taehyung was your best friend, and best friends don't let each other make stupid mistakes. Like taking too many tequila shots, or walking home in the rain without a jacket, or telling your best friend you're in love with them...but maybe some mistakes are worth making.
tags: obnoxious flirting (i think all my fics are gonna be tagged with this), overly dramatic confessions, mild angst for a hot minute (but dw it all ends in fluff), some intense making out but everything stays pretty PG 15, cursing, alcohol consumption, brief reference (too brief) to taehyung being a bisexual king
so this is just a lil something to celebrate 6 months of tae-bebe !!! thank u all for sticking around for this shit show i like to call a blog, and a special shoutout to @hellojeongkook and @taejinnies for beta'ing this for me !!! - Had the morning light in your bedroom always been this blindingly bright? Isn’t this why you’d invested in blackout blinds? You sat up blearily, your head pounding delightfully from your hangover, and realised three things all at once. One, you were not in your apartment, hence the lack of blackout blinds. Two, you were not wearing the clothes you’d worn last night. In fact you seemed to only be wearing a t-shirt and your underwear. And three, there was a man spooning you from behind. With his morning boner pressed against your ass. So technically four things. You sat up quickly, earning a disgruntled sound from the man in the bed and another shooting pain behind your eyes. ‘What are you doing?’ the man mumbled into the pillow, and a feeling of relief flooded over you as you saw your best friend lying beside you. Then you remembered the fact that both of you were half naked and your memory of last night was hazy at best and suddenly felt a little less relieved.
‘Closing these damn curtains for a start.’ you muttered, stumbling out of bed to yank them closed.
‘Wait a second.’ Taehyung’s voice suddenly sounded much more awake. When you turned back around he was sitting up in bed, a hand running through his messy curls. ‘Did we?’ he looked down at his bare chest, then back at you wearing one of his t-shirts, then back down at the semi which was still distractingly visible through his sweatpants. ‘Did we have sex last night?’
‘Oh my god, shut the fuck up.’ you groaned, collapsing back onto the bed and throwing a pillow at him as you did so.
‘That wasn’t a no.’ he pointed out, a lazy grin on his face
‘No, we did not Taehyung. I was wasted last night but I wasn’t that wasted.’ you rolled your eyes.
‘Damn that’s too bad.’ he sighed, pulling you back in closer under the covers.
‘Bro! Can you please do something about that morning wood?’ you protested through your giggles as you pushed him away.
‘Not my fault I was sleeping with your naked ass against me bro.’ he grumbled, continuing with his mission to try and pull you back into a cuddle.
‘Hey! I have underwear on thank you very much.’ you countered, finally letting yourself be pulled against Taehyung’s chest.
‘Barely.’ he said, his breath tickling your ear as he teasingly snapped the waistband of your lace thong. You’d been out clubbing after all, you didn’t know if you were getting laid or not, it was a fancy underwear kind of occasion.
‘How are you like this even at-’ you paused to grab your phone, groaning at the time displayed on the screen. ‘Seven eighteen in the morning? While also disgustingly hungover?’
‘I’m not disgustingly hungover. Some of us can actually handle our drink you know.’ he chuckled, the reverberations echoing through his chest and through you as you laughed with him.
‘Why did you let me go shot for shot with Jeongguk? That kid can really put away his tequila.’ you groaned again remembering the copious amounts of shots you’d done. Some of them off Jeongguk’s stomach, if your memory was correct.
‘'S funny.’ Taehyung answered simply as you felt him shrug against you.
‘Drunk you has a lot to answer for.’ you said ruefully, leaning over to grab the glass of water you’d thankfully left by the side of the bed last night.
‘Yeah he does.’ Taehyung said softly, almost to himself.
‘What do you mean?’ you asked.
‘Well I was kinda counting on drunk me to finally make a move last night.’ he said nonchalantly, as you very un-nonchalantly choked on your sip of water.
‘To finally what?’ you said, though you’d heard him perfectly well.
‘Although to be fair, I’d rather you were sober so you could properly enjoy yourself.’ he continued with a grin you knew all too well spreading across his face.
‘Oh so you think I’d enjoy myself?’ you replied, recovering as you realised he was joking.
Some people (read: mostly Yoongi because he said it was gross) didn’t really understand your and Taehyung’s flirty-bordering-on-inappropriate humour, but it was just the way you two had always been together. At the start you couldn’t help but wonder if it would ever turn into anything more, but as the years passed you convinced yourself that you were happy like this. I mean, was it really the worst thing in the world to have a best friend that looked like Taehyung who also told you that your tits looked great on a regular basis?
Namjoon was the only person not convinced by this, and regularly told both of you (unbeknownst to the other) to get your shit together and just admit you’d been in love since the day you’d met. To Namjoon’s eternal frustration, both of you refused.
‘Yeah, I do.’ Taehyung replied, propping himself up on one elbow as he looked at you. You took the moment to look back at him, and really look.
The way the morning light struggling through the curtains still made his dark eyes shine. The way his sleep rumpled curls tumbled over his forehead. The way his full lips were curved into that smile that never failed to bring one to your own face. Your eyes trailed down over his collarbones, his broad shoulders, the soft gold of his skin.
‘Pretty confident about that, hmm?’ you quickly returned your gaze to his face before he noticed your eyes roaming over him.
‘Considering the way you were just checking me out, yeah I reckon so.’ Fuck. So maybe he’d noticed.
‘You know if your head gets any bigger you’re not gonna be able to wear those baseball caps you’re always stealing from Yoongi.’ you retorted, going back to your tried and tested method of dealing with your feelings for Taehyung: deflect with humour.
‘Don’t worry, we don’t need to wear anything for what I have planned.’ he quipped back easily.
‘Tae do any of these lines actually work on the girls you try them on?’ you chuckled.
‘Yeah they work on pretty much everyone but you ___.’ you were surprised when Taehyung sighed, flopping down onto his back beside you once more.
A silence fell over the room, but not the kind you were used to. You and Taehyung shared many happy silences together, working in the library, reading side by side, sharing headphones on long bus rides. But this silence felt like a physical presence on the room, weighing heavy on you.
‘Well do you...want them to work?’ you finally spoke up, your voice hesitant.
‘What do you think?’ he asked.
‘I don’t know.’ you mumbled under your breath, staring resolutely at the ceiling to avoid Taehyung’s gaze which you could feel burning into you.
‘___ look at me.’ you were frozen, unable to do as he asked. A million different thoughts raced through your mind as you tried to make sense of his words. Surely he couldn't mean it like you were thinking. Like you were hoping. Like you'd been dreaming.
‘___.’ he said softly, a hand reaching up to cup your cheek and gently tilt your face towards him. His eyes were soft and warm but there was a hint of a teasing smile playing on his lips. ‘I don’t think I know how to say this any more clearly at this point, but I would very much like to fuck you.’
‘If you’re joking right now I swear I’m gonna kill you.’ you said quietly, your eyes finally meeting his.
‘I know we joke about shit like this a lot, but I promise I’m serious right now.’ Taehyung said, his hand still lingering on your cheek. ‘Wait, why are you gonna kill me?’ a confused expression suddenly flitted across his face as he processed your words.
‘Because it would be really embarrassing if I did this and you were just joking.’ Before Taehyung could say anything else you were closing the distance between you and bringing your lips to his.
You’d been kissed by Taehyung before of course. You don’t think you could count the number of forehead, cheek and shoulder kisses he’d lightly brushed across your skin over the years. But this was different.
For a split second the touch of his lips was feather light against your own, but then his other hand found your waist and he was pulling you closer as his mouth pressed hungrily against yours. Your arms wound around his neck and you pulled him closer still, skin against skin as you felt the thrum of his heartbeat through his bare chest. A low moan escaped from the back of your throat and Taehyung finally pulled away.
‘I can’t believe I spent all those years trying to think up clever ways to tell you when I could have just said it straight up.’ he said, leaning back in again to kiss you through his laughter.
‘I can’t believe I spent all those years missing your incredibly unsubtle hints.’ you laughed back.
‘We’ve always been two halves of a whole idiot.’ Taehyung mused, unable to resist leaving another kiss at the corner of your mouth.
‘There’s no one I’d rather fuck around with.’ you smiled fondly, fingers playing with the soft curls at the nape of his neck.
‘I’m so glad that our fucking around now includes actual fucking.’ he hummed appreciatively as he rolled his hips against yours.
‘I see you didn’t do anything about that morning wood.’ you teased as you felt him pressed hot and hard against you.
‘I was kind of hoping you’d help me out there.’ he smirked in the way that only Taehyung could.
‘You’re lucky I’m such a helpful friend.’ you murmured as you began to grind against him.
‘I am lucky.’ Taehyung’s voice was muffled as his lips trailed down your neck but you still heard him, and your heart ached at the sincerity contained in his words. ‘Gonna make you feel so good ___. Gonna fuck you so good, I promise. ’
‘I trust you Tae.’ you put a finger under his chin to tilt his face back up towards you and when your eyes locked you knew that there was something deeper behind that promise.
Before you could pay too much attention to that aching feeling in your chest again, his lips had found yours and that was suddenly all that mattered.
His hands skimmed over your body as if he didn’t even know where he wanted to touch you first. His fingers soon found the hem of your (well technically his) t-shirt and he tugged it over your head. You expected some kind of appreciative comment about your tits (it wouldn’t be the first) but instead there was a hushed silence which filled you with nerves.
Were you not what he’d been expecting? What he’d been hoping for? You knew that your body didn’t look like his, but then you didn’t know many people who looked like they were a long lost Greek demi-god.
‘What, you’ve never seen a girl naked before?’ you teased lightly, anything to break the quiet which had fallen as his eyes roved over you.
‘Can you just let me appreciate how beautiful you are for a second?’ Taehyung said seriously. You felt a blush creeping up your cheeks at his words and instinctively moved to cover some of your nakedness with your hands. Before you could, you found Taehyung’s fingers loosely encircling your wrist, holding your hand back. ‘So fucking beautiful.’ he said again, a look of wonder on his face. You couldn’t believe he was the one looking at you like that, when it felt like ever since you’d met him you’d been struck at least ten times a day by how stunning he was.
‘You know just what to say.’ you rolled your eyes teasingly, bringing him in for a kiss.
He kissed you back deeply, but when he pulled away he nudged his nose gently against yours, pausing for a moment. ‘I mean it you know.’
‘I know you do.’ you said, and you knew it was true. Your hand reached up to cup his face, your thumb trailing across his full bottom lip. You suddenly leaned in to kiss the freckle hidden there at the corner of his mouth. ‘I’ve always wanted to do that.’ you giggled shyly.
‘Do what?’ he asked with a giggle of his own.
‘Your freckle right there.’ you said, brushing another kiss to the same spot. ‘I’ve always wanted to kiss it.’
‘If we’re talking about things we’ve always wanted...’ Taehyung’s words trailed off as his hands skimmed down your body and to the hem of your lace thong once more.
‘As much as I trust you’d make a great baby daddy after watching you with Yeontan, you have condoms right?’ you asked with a raised eyebrow.
‘Fuck.’ a look of panic flashed across Taehyung's face as he looked up. ‘I think I do? I should do? I must do...’ he said as he leaned over and began to search through his bedside table as you laughed.
‘You were about to risk it all huh?’ you teased as you watched him.
‘You were kinda making it hard to think straight.’ he tossed a lopsided grin back at you as he got up from the bed and directed his search to his desk.
‘Bro, how much stuff do you keep in there?’ you laughed as Taehyung searched through yet another drawer.
‘Can you not call me bro right now?’ he laughed back, scrunching up his nose in distaste.
‘Oh come on, I bet you let Jeongguk call you bro when you guys fuck.’ you rolled your eyes teasingly.
‘Hey that was ONE time!’ Taehyung said indignantly. Suddenly he turned around, a condom held aloft triumphantly in his hand. ‘Anyway we didn’t fuck we just-’ as he walked back over to the bed you held a finger up to shush him.
‘I don’t need all the details.’ you protested.
‘You were the one who brought it up!’ Taehyung pouted.
‘My bad.’ you chuckled. Your laughter trailed off as you watched Taehyung shimmy out of his sweatpants and kick them to the side as he walked back over towards you.
‘Like what you see?’ he teased as he watched your eyes drink him in. The mischievous smile on his face that you knew so well coupled with this new sight of his nearly naked body made your head spin.
This was your best friend, the kid you'd known since he was 18 years old and still a little shy, still hadn't quite grown into his ears. Now he was nearly 6ft of lean muscle, dark hair falling into even darker eyes. He was everything you'd ever wanted, he was more, but you couldn't help but wonder if maybe it was all too good to be true.
‘Is this weird?’ you blurted out suddenly. You looked up at Taehyung, trying to gauge his reaction. He paused for a moment before sitting down on the bed beside you once more.
‘I guess it’s a little weird.’ he acknowledged with a soft smile. ‘But we can stop whenever you want, you know that right?'
‘That’s the problem though.’ you sighed. ‘I really, really don’t want to stop.’ You paused, trying to find the right words, but there were none. You settled instead for leaning in to capture Taehyung’s lips with your own, gasping when he took the chance to slip his tongue into your mouth.
‘Neither do I.’ he murmured when you both finally pulled apart.
‘So we’re doing this?’ you asked, still breathless from the kiss.
‘We’re doing this.’ he nodded, pushing you down so you were caged between his arms. ‘I told you, I want to make you feel good.’
His words were punctuated with kisses that trailed down the column of your throat and across your collarbones. Even though his touch was featherlight, it felt like his lips left a trail of fire under your skin. You sucked in a shaky breath, your whole body held taut. ‘You okay baby?’ he asked, concern flitting through his dark eyes as he regarded you.
‘Baby feels just as weird as bro.’ you said, and it was your turn to wrinkle your nose in distaste. Hearing the way the word dropped so easily from his lips you couldn’t help but think of all the other girls who’d heard the pet name from him in this very bed. You didn't want to just be another 'baby' to him, and you felt jealously rapidly replacing the lust that had been pooling in your stomach.
‘___.’ he shook his head with a smile, and the fondness in his tone made your heart stutter. ‘It’s still just me, it’s still just us.’ This time when he leaned in to kiss you it wasn’t rushed or heated or eager for more. It was soft and deliberate and slow. ‘You don’t need to call me anything else if you don’t want to. My name sounds pretty enough on your lips.’ Before you had time to react he was dipping his head down to suck a delicate bruise to the junction between your jaw and throat and you were barely aware of the moan that escaped you.
‘Tae...’ you whimpered as his tongue flicked out to soothe the skin marked by his lips.
‘Just like that.’ he smirked. His hands came up to cup your breasts, long fingers teasing at your nipple.
‘Oh Tae, just like that.’ you groaned, not even realising as you mirrored his words back to him. His eyes never leaving yours, he dipped his head down to capture your nipple between his teeth, nipping and sucking at the sensitive bud. Your moan this time was high pitched and breathy as you looked back at him, marvelling at how beautiful he looked like this. He released your nipple with a pleased sounding pop, the smirk already returning to his lips.
‘Like that huh?’ he hummed, his voice even deeper than usual, laced with desire.
‘Like that.’ you repeated his words again, barely taking a second to catch your breath before you were seeking his mouth again for another kiss.
‘So pretty.’ he murmured to you as he took your other nipple in his mouth this time. ‘So pretty when you moan for me.’ he added just as another moan escaped your lips as his tongue darted across your skin. ‘Bet you’ll sound just as pretty when you’re cumming for me too.’
‘You think so, hmm?’ you managed to gasp out between kisses as your fingers knotted in Taehyung’s already disheveled curls.
‘I did promise you.’ he said, and behind the eyes hooded with lust you could still see the playful glint you recognised from your best friend.
‘Prove it then.’ you challenged, and the words had barely left your lips before his hands were gripping your hips and pulling you impossibly closer.
~
The rest of the day passed in a state of, well, incredibly smug bliss. You had fallen back asleep in a mess of tangled limbs after Taehyung had made good on his promise and given you a frankly obscene amount of orgasms for that time of the morning. And when you’d woken up he did it all over again.
Unable to tear yourselves away you spent hours wrapped in each other's arms, reminiscing on moments when you’d almost confessed how you felt, when you’d been convinced the other was going to confess first, laughing at how close to the truth both of you had been for so long without ever realising. The lazy late summer afternoon slowly bled into a dusky evening and still you couldn’t bear to leave, the outside world forgotten completely and replaced by your new home here under the cool white sheets with Taehyung.
As night drew in you found yourself lying with your head pillowed on his chest as his fingers gently combed through your hair and he sung half finished songs to you, humming in the parts he hadn’t written lyrics for yet. It almost felt like nothing had changed, the familiar sounds of his voice lulling you to sleep the way he’d done for years. But you were hyper aware of your bare skin against his, the lingering taste of him on your tongue, the sense that once this day was over you’d lose it forever. And you might never find your way back.
‘I can only see you, you’re the only one I see.’ the words Taehyung were singing softly made your breath catch in your throat. ‘Look, I’m fair with everyone else but you, now I can’t live a day without you.’
The low rumbling thunder of an approaching summer storm made Taehyung pause for a moment, and it’s like you were snapped out of a trance. You pulled the sheets off you as you sat up, shivering as the cold night air hit your bare skin. When you met Taehyung's gaze you felt another shiver pass through you, as for a second it felt like you didn't recognise the eyes looking back at you.
‘I should go.’ you mumbled, almost to yourself.
‘___ what are you talking about? It’s late, you can just sleep here again.’ Taehyung’s voice was laced with confusion as he reached out towards you.
‘Oh god Tae. We should not have done that.’ your head dropped into your hands as yet another rumble of thunder sounded in the distance.
‘You’re going to have to be a little more specific.’ Taehyung swung his legs over the edge of the bed so he was sitting next to you. ‘Do you mean the first time this morning, or the time after that in the shower, or the time on the couch this afternoon, or that time just then?’
‘You’re so not being helpful right now.’ you groaned, standing up and trying to figure out where all of your things had ended up on Taehyung’s floor.
The sound of the clouds finally breaking and rain drumming down on the roof above you brought you crashing back to reality. Talk about pathetic fallacy. As Taehyung had sung those words you found yourself agonising over whether they’d been for you, in a way you’d never dared to think about before. For the first time the sound of your best friend's voice had brought you pain rather than comfort, and you hated the thought. What you’d had before had been safe, familiar. It had been enough to love him from afar knowing that you’d never have to stop. But replaying those words ‘I can’t live a day without you’ had made you imagine a day when he could live without you. When your love story had played out. And you’d rather have no love story at all than a story where Taehyung wasn’t by your side.
A sudden flash of lightning startled you from your thoughts and you froze for a second. Before you knew it Taehyung was standing in front of you, his warm palms cupping your face as he looked down at you.
‘___ can you please stop freaking out for a second.’
‘I’m not freaking out.’ you protested.
‘Your dress is on backwards.’ he pointed out.
‘Oh.’ glancing down you realised he was right. Seriously regretting your outfit choice from the night before of a mini dress and heels (damn Jeongguk’s bougie taste in nightclubs) you shuffled the dress the right way round. ‘Thanks.’
‘Can we just-’ you cut Taehyung off before he could finish his sentence, ducking away to grab your bag and head towards the door.
‘I promise we’ll talk later Tae, I just need to get home. I’ll call you when I’m back, I just...I need to go.’ as you closed the door behind you Taehyung’s call of ‘Wait!’ echoed painfully in your ears.
Although in a way this had been years in the making, it somehow still felt like it had all happened too fast. A part of you had been longing for this for far longer than you'd like to admit, but getting a glimpse of what could be, of what the two of you could be together, you were suddenly terrified of losing it. Because you realised just how much it would hurt if you did. You knew running away wasn't a solution, but you didn't think you could stay there any longer with your own love reflected back at you in Taehyung's eyes. Didn't think you could dare to hope that there was his own love for you there as well.
Running down the stairs as fast as you could in your heels you stumbled as you pushed through the front door of Taehyung's apartment complex. The rain soaked you almost instantly as you stood still for a moment and drew in a shaky breath. You began the walk back to your apartment, phone battery long dead so an Uber was out of the question. You’d only been walking for a few minutes before a pair of headlights appeared on the empty road and a familiar car appeared beside you.
‘___.’ Taehyung had pulled up beside you, the window rolled down as he leaned across the front seats towards you. ‘Can you get in the car please?’
‘I’m going home Tae, I told you.’ Your voice was resolute as you avoided looking at him. This was perhaps not the best time for both of your stubborn personalities to come into play (you blamed his Capricorn sun), yet here you were.
‘Can you please get in the car?’ he asked again, driving along inch by inch beside you.
‘You’re wasting your time.’ you said defiantly, pushing your rain soaked hair out of your face.
‘Out of all of the dumb rom-com tropes we could be living right now, this would not have been my first choice.’ Taehyung said with a shake of his head.
‘Can you please be serious about something for 30 seconds?’ you shot back.
‘I am serious. There are so many other better tropes.’ Usually you loved Taehyung’s particular style of deadpan delivery, but right now was not the time.
‘This isn’t a fucking rom-com okay?’ your voice echoed in the empty street. ‘Things like this never work out in real life.’
‘Things like what?’
‘Don’t play dumb with me Kim Taehyung, I know you look stupid but you’re not really.’ you crossed your arms over your chest, trying to make it look like a pose of defiance rather than desperately trying to keep yourself warm as the rain poured down.
‘Okay well we’re not even going to get into the fact that you think I “look stupid” right now.’ Taehyung took his hand off the wheel to place air quotes around the words. ‘But I still don’t understand why you’re so upset.’
‘I don’t understand why you’re not upset!’ you exclaimed. ‘Friends aren’t supposed to do stuff like that Tae, it never ends well.’
‘But you haven’t even given it a chance!’ both of your voices were rising as you continued to walk and Taehyung continued to drive alongside you.
‘Because I know how it ends! Someone’s going to end up getting hurt because someone’s going to end up falling in love.’ And that someone will be me, you added silently in your head. You were so wrapped up in your own thoughts that you were almost convinced you’d imagined the next words that burst out of Taehyung’s mouth.
‘Well what if someone already has!’
‘What do you-’ the words trailed off as you looked in disbelief at your best friend.
‘God this is so not how I planned on telling you.’ he sighed, lowering his head to rest on the steering wheel for a second.
‘Tell me what?’ you managed to ask this time.
‘Well now look who’s playing dumb.’ Taehyung raised an eyebrow at you. A hundred different responses raced through your mind but you suddenly found yourself rooted to the ground. The car finally came to a stop beside you. ‘Can you please just get in the car so I don’t have to yell at you out the window like a creepy old man?’
You let out a sound that was somewhere between a sob and a laugh because at this point you had no idea what you were feeling. For the second time that day you found yourself daring to believe that the words Taehyung were saying really were the ones you so desperately wanted to hear. Before you had the chance to walk over to him Taehyung was putting on his hazard lights and leaping out of the car to join you on the pavement.
‘Hi.’ he said quietly, tucking a strand of wet hair behind your ear.
‘Hi.’ you replied simply.
‘If you hadn’t decided to try and drown us in this rain’ Taehyung chuckled as he shook drops of water from his hair. ‘I was kinda thinking about telling you this in bed earlier. But I guess this’ll have to do.’
‘Tae...’ you began softly, but this time it was his turn to cut you off.
‘I just need to tell you this, okay?’ he pleaded, taking both your hands in his. You nodded silently for him to continue.
‘This morning, this whole day really, I felt like I was dreaming. I honestly never believed you’d ever see me...the way I see you. But then when you kissed me, when you talked about all those times you wished you’d kissed me before...I realised maybe it wasn’t all as one sided as I thought. Because God when I said I wanted to fuck you I meant that, I really did.’ he chuckled and you couldn’t but let out a small laugh too at the earnest smile on his face. ‘But I want to do so much more than that as well. I want all of the other moments from today, singing in the shower, dancing as we do the dishes, falling asleep with you in my arms knowing you’ll be there when I wake up. I know you think you know how this ends but, give me a chance to prove you wrong.’
'You know how much I hate being wrong..' a smile tugged at the corner of your lips. 'but I think this time I can make an exception.'
'God that's an annoying way of saying I love you too.' Taehyung rolled his eyes.
'Kim Taehyung I fucking love you!' you yelled suddenly, head tipped back towards the sky.
'I fucking love-'
'Can you two shut the fuck up?' a voice shouted back from an apartment window nearby and you both dissolved into laugher. Taehyung pulled you in for a messy kiss that was all clashing teeth and tongues as you pressed your smiles into each other's mouths.
'I fucking love you.' he said, more quietly this time. 'But for the last time, can we please get in the car now?
'Yeah I think I made my point.' you conceded, grinning as Taehyung rolled his eyes at you once more. 'They really make the whole kissing in the rain thing look a whole lot more romantic in Breakfast at Tiffany's.' you mused as you opened the car door. 'Maybe it's because we didn't have a cat.'
'I mean Yeontan is right there back at my place.' Taehyung pointed out.
'I guess we could go back to your place...just for Yeontan though.' you said sternly as you put on your seatbelt.
'And also because you love me.' Taehyung grinned at you.
'And also because I love you.' you couldn't help but grin back. 'You're gonna be so annoying about this aren't you?'
'You have no idea.'

Yoongi loved mornings.
Yoongi loved mornings more, now that the two of you had finally moved in together after years of dancing around the subject. He loved waking up next to you, with your face buried into the side of his body and your tiny snores escaping your dry chapped lips, echoing against the eggshell walls of the room. He loved the way the thin rays of the morning sun peek through the slits of the blackout curtains. The light dancing against your body, illuminating all his favorite features. Which was all of you. He loved the way you would stir, and he would race against time to shut his eyes before you could catch him starring at you.
You always did.

Those Summer Nights ~ T.H
chapter nine: wonder what she’s doing now
Series Masterlist

Week 8
On the last night of summer camp, you went back to your cabin and expected to find Tom inside. Instead, you found a note on your pillow.
“Mess hall. Kitchen. You know where to find me. T”
You bit back a smile and held the note over your heart. You spun around like a girl in a brand new dress and went to your dresser. You put on the one sundress you packed and did some light makeup before heading out to the mess hall. When you went to the kitchen in the mess hall, you found Tom sitting at a folding table. There was a white tablecloth thrown over it and two candles in the center. One either side of the table was a plate with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on it.
“What’s all this?“ You asked as you bit back a smile.
“I thought we could have one last dinner together.” Tom smiled shyly. “I know it’s not the romantic dinner you deserve, but it’s the best I could do for now.“
“It’s perfect.” You told him, making him relax a little. He nervously fixed his hair before pulling your seat out for you.
“After you.” He said, still sounding unsure of himself. You smiled at the gesture and walked to the chair. Before sitting down, you put your hand on his shoulder and kissed his cheek
“Relax.“ You whispered in his ear, making his face turn bright red. He gave you an appreciative smile as you sat down in the seat. He went to sit across from you and nervously cleared his throat. The pressure of making your last night together perfect was making him anxious.
“Um, would the lady like a chocolate milk?” Tom asked as he held up a small carton of chocolate milk that had been previously sitting on a bucket of ice.
“She would.” You laughed and held your glass up. Your glass, being a plastic cup Tom had swiped from the dishwasher. Tom poured some chocolate in your cup before doing the same for himself.
“Cheers. To our last night.” He said as he held up his cup. You clicked yours against his before taking a sip. When you put the cup down, Tom noticed that you looked a little sad.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
“I don’t know.” You frowned. “Somethings missing.”
“What is it? I’ll fix it.” Tom said quickly. “I want this to be perfect.”
You smiled a little and got out of your seat. Tom watched your curiously as you walked around the table and took a seat on his lap.
“There.” You smiled. “That’s better.”
Tom sighed and relief and wrapped an around around your waist.
“Thank you for doing this for me.” You told him as you looked at the table he had set up. “I mean, the candles, the sandwiches, all of it. Nobody’s ever put this much effort into a date with me.”
“Then you haven’t been with the right people.” Tom smiled and squeezed your hip.
“No. I haven’t. But I guess what’s a good thing.”
“Yeah? Whys that?”
“Because it led me to you.” You smiled softly and played with the hair at the back of his head. It had grown significantly in the 8 weeks you’d been at camp and you’d been enjoying his curls.
“You know what I like about you? You never fail to surprise me. Every time I think I have you figured out, you do something I never saw coming.” You said as you wrapped your arms around his neck.
“I think you’re the first person to describe me like that. Most people assume they know who I am just from looking at me. I like the way you think of me. I like who I am when I’m with you.” Tom replied, too vulnerable to look you in the eyes as he said it.
“Wow should I leave? It seems like you’d rather be on this date with yourself. You know, since you like him so much.” You teased him.
“Don’t leave. I need every second I have left with you.” Tom whined and held you closer. You hugged him back and kissed the top of his head. You sat in comfortable silence for a moment before you went back to your seat.
“Shall we?” Tom asked and held his sandwich up. You hit yours against his before taking a bite. The ambiance of a romantic date slowly dissipated as you ate your sandwiches. With the pressure of this being your last night together handing over your heads, it felt more like a last meal as you ate in silence.
“So when do you go back to New York?” Tom asked without looking up from his plate.
“Tomorrow.” You told him. “I leave at 5. Then classes start the following week.”
“Yeah. My flight back to London takes off at 6.” Tom said as he picked at the crust on his sandwich.
“Damn. I didn’t think it would go by this fast.” You laughed to lighten the mood but your smile almost instantly fell.
“Me either.” He smiled sadly. “I’m going to miss you, darling.”
“We’ll be okay.” You assured him. “People do long distance all the time. We could call every night.”
“My night isn’t your night. We’re five hours ahead.” He reminded you as he peeled the rest of the crust off his sandwich.
“We could write.”
“Yeah.” He smiled unconvincingly. “We could try that.”
You gave him a weak smile in return and looked down at your plate. Both of you knew writing was a death sentence for your relationship but neither of you wanted to be the one to say that.
“Have you ever been in a long distance relationship?” You asked after a beat of silence.
“No. Have you?”
“Yeah. It’s not so bad.” You shrugged.
“Why did you guys break up?” Tom asked as he rolled the pieces of his crust between his fingers into little balls.
“We don’t have to talk about it.” You laughed nervously when you noticed the look of despair on his face.
“Was it because of the distance?” Tom asked as he slowly looked up from his plate. You smiled sadly and nodded a little.
“Yeah.” You said quietly. “It was.”
Tom nodded as if that was the answer he was expecting. He looked at his plate again and began to pull his sandwich apart into tiny pieces.
“It doesn’t have to be like that for us. We could make it work.” You said as you reached across the table to take his hand.
“But we just started dating.” He sighed. “We don’t have a solid relationship yet. I’m worried that this is too much pressure on us before we’re ready. If we can only talk when we’re both awake or have to wait for each other’s letters, I’m worried our relationship will start to feel like a chore.”
“What are you saying?“ You asked quietly.
“I wanna be together. You know that better than anyone.” Tom assured you. “But I want to do it when we can actually be together. I like you too much to just be your penpal.”
“So do I.” You nodded as your eyes welled up with tears. That was exactly how you were feeling. You just didn’t have the heart to be the one to say it. You wiped a tear that fell from your cheek as Tom played with his clothes ti look busy.
“I’ll be back here next summer.” You said after a minute. “I already signed on.”
“So did I.” Tom nodded and gave you a fake smile as he felt his heart crumple into tiny pieces.
“Wait for me?”
“I will.”
The next morning - final day of camp
“Campers! Say your last goodbyes now. Your parents haven’t seen you in 8 weeks. They’re waiting for you.”
Once you finished your announcement, you looked around at the view from the applebox you were standing on. The camp was a picture of chaos at the moment. Kids were crying and hugging each other goodbye while others excitedly ran to greet their parents. You got down from the platform and rallied up your remaining campers. You hugged them each goodbye and wiped their tears before sending them off to their parents. After watching your last camper get into their car, you looked over your shoulder at the campground. You saw Tom with his campers and made eye contact. He waved to you and you felt your heart crack just a little more. You jogged over to him and gave him a weak smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” He smiled at you. “My last camper just left.”
“Tom, you have like 11 campers still waiting to be picked up. Only one of your campers has gone.” You said as you pointed behind him to his campers.
“I have 11 campers?” He turned around in shock. “It thought I only had 9.”
“Tom.” You groaned.
“Are you serious? These can’t all be mine. I’ve never seen that kid in my life. Swear to God.” He said as he pointed to one of his campers.
“You need to know who your campers are.” You laughed a little and shook him by his shirt.
“I do. Look. This is my camper right here.” Tom smiled at you before pointing to a nearby kid.
“I don’t go here. I’m picking up my big brother.” The kid told him.
“Oh.” Tom grimaced, making you laugh.
“Counselor Y/n. Come say goodbye.” One of Tom’s campers called to you.
“I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.” You told Tom before running over to the camper. You scooped him up and kissed his cheek, making him laugh. Tom watched you with a fond smile as you spun in a circle with the kid while he held his arms out like an airplane. It amazed him how you managed to form a close bond with all of the campers, even the ones that weren’t yours. Once you handed the kid off to his parents and said goodbye to the rest of Tom’s campers, you went back over to Tom.
“I know we said our goodbyes last night. I just wanted to give you something.” Tom said as he put something in the palm of your hand. When you opened your palm, you saw the pink and purple lanyard Tom had made during the second week of camp.
“Your lanyard?” You chuckled and looked up at him.
“Something to remember me by.” He smiled shyly.
“Oh, Tom.” You pouted. “That’s so sweet. But I made this. You did not contribute to it at all. You are giving me something I made.”
“I know. I just wanted to give you something. It was this or a piece of firewood.” He said as he closed his hands around yours. You looked down at your intertwined hands and felt your lip begin to tremble. It was just a few minutes before you’d say goodbye to him now and it was breaking your heart.
“Remember when I said I was falling in love with you?” You asked as you looked up at him. Not trusting his voice to be steady, all Tom could do was nod.
“I fell.” You told him, a tear rolling down your cheek as you tried to smile.
“So did I.” His voice cracked right before he pulled you into a kiss. You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed his back as a steady stream of tears ran down your cheeks. Tom wiped your tears with his thumbs as he kissed you with everything he had in him. You heard a honking behind you followed by the sound of your name being called. You pulled away from Tom and tearfully rested your forehead against his.
“That’s my ride to the airport. I have to go.” You sniffled as you kept your eyes shut.
“Okay. Just go.” He nodded and wiped his face. We said our goodbyes. Don’t even turn around. Just walk to the car and go.”
You nodded before turning to walk away. You didn’t open your eyes until you were walking towards your car. You suddenly felt Tom grab your arm and pull you back, immediately enveloping you in a hug.
“I love you.” He said as he held you as tightly as he could. “I love you, pretty girl.”
“I love you too.” You told him. You pulled away to kiss him one last time. In the middle of the kiss, you turned your face and tan towards your car. It felt easier to do it that way. You grabbed your bag and climbed into the back of the car, giving the driver a quick smile. Just as you were buckling your seat belt, your phone rang.
“Hello?” You answered it up without looking at the caller ID.
“Hey. I wanted to call you while we’re still in the same time zone.” Tom said, and you could hear his smile through the phone. You looked out the window and saw him smiling at you, making you smile on return.
“Sorry for calling. I just needed to see your face one last time.” Tom said on the other line. You smiled sadly and pressed your hand up against the glass of the window.
“Summer dreams ripped at the seams, huh?” You laughed sadly as you reference the song you had sung together.
“Yeah.” He smiled. “But oh, those summer nights.”
One year later
On the night before camp, you were organizing things in your office. You had cleaned out all of Jesses junk to put your own things up, one of the many perks of being given his job. You looked around in satisfaction before putting up the finishing touch, a picture of you and Tom in a frame your camper made for you. You heard a knock at the door suddenly and turned around.
“Excuse me? Do you think you could help me start my lanyard?” Tom asked as he stepped into your office.
“Tom!” You screamed and ran into his arms. He picked you up and you wrapped your legs around his torso to hug him as tightly as possible. You had actually gone the penpal route and wrote each other every week. Since you agreed to end your relationship for the time being, the pressure was off. You were able to just be yourselves and maintain your relationship. Even though you agreed to just be friends, you’d both been eagerly counting down the days until you’d see each other again.
You pulled out of the hug and cupped his face between your hands to get a good look at him. His hair was short again and he had his same tan skin and sweet smile.
“I’ve missed you so much, pretty girl.” Tom said as he wrapped his arms around your waist.
“I missed you too.” You grinned. “I have so many things to tell you.”
“I know. How was your graduation? Do you have pictures?” He asked.
“I do! Come look.” You pulled your phone out and unlocked it with your face. Tom slung an arm around you as he looked over your shoulder. You scrolled through a few pictures from your graduation before landing on one of you holding a baby.
“Who’s that?” Tom wondered, and you fell silent. You slowly looked up at him and gave him an apologetic smile.
“Thats my daughter.” You said softly. “She’s a couple months old.”
Tom felt a white hot panic shoot through his body as he stared at the picture. He was under the impression that you would rekindle your romance now that you were together in person again. If you had a kid now, he assumed you had a boyfriend too.
“Wow, really? She’s…she’s beautiful. She looks just like you.” Tom gulped as he fought the urge to cry.
“Thank you.” You smiled at him. “I’m sorry I didn’t put this in my letter. I wanted to wait to tell you in person.”
“Yeah, no. Totally.” Tom nodded but you sounded a million miles away. “What’s her name?”
“London.” You told him.
“London?”
“Yeah. I named her after where her dad is from.” You said and nervously waiting for him reaction. Tom’s head snapped to you as he felt his heart stop.
“What? Her dad? You don’t mean…” He trailed off as he put two and two together.
“Yeah, Tom.” You nodded. “She’s yours.”
Tom put one hand over his mouth and took your phone with the other hand. He looked at the picture closer as he tried to process that he was looking at his daughter. He looked at you in disbelief and you cracked a smile.
“I’m fucking with you.” You snorted. “That’s my niece. My sister had her a few months ago. Tom let out a sigh go relief and grabbed his heart.
“Oh my God. I just had a heart attack.” He groaned as you burst out laughing.
“I’m sorry to do that to you but you have to understand, the opportunity was too good to pass up.” You said as you clutched his arm. “And I just thought of that on the spot! Can you believe that? I’m a genius.”
“Yeah, evil genius.” Tom whined. “That’s your niece? She’s not yours?”
“No she’s not mine.” You said like it was obvious. “I haven’t even gone on a date in the last year. Much less get knocked up.”
“Well I’m glad to hear that.” Tom sighed and put his arm back around you. He kissed the side of your head before going back to looking through your pictures.
“I really got you.” You giggled as you showed him another picture of your niece.
“You really did.” He chuckled and shook his head. You put your phone down and fell into a comfortable silence with Tom.
“I haven’t gone on any dates either, by the way.” He said after a minute. “Not since I last saw you.”
“Wow.” You clicked your tongue. “Virgin much?”
“Very much.” He laughed and pulled you into a hug. You wrapped your arms around him and gently swayed together in your office.
“I haven’t stopped-“ You both started to say at the same time.
“Sorry.” You laughed awkwardly and pulled away a little to look at him.
“No. You first.” He nodded towards you.
“I was just gonna say that I haven’t stopped thinking about you.” You told him as you played with the collar of his shirt.
“Oh. I was gonna say that I still love you but it’s fine. It’s cool that you were just thinking of me.” Tom shrugged as he looked looked away from you. You laughed at his antics and wrapped your arms around his neck.
“I have to tell you something.” You said, catching his attention.
“Is it that you lost the lanyard I gave you?”He asked. “Because I can’t handle that. I worked so hard on it all summer. I can’t take it if it’s missing.”
“Your lanyard is fine.” You laughed. “I keep it on my keychain.”
“Good.” He smiled. “Then what were you gonna tell me?”
“The camp is opening up a couple after school programs around the world.” You told him. “And they offered me a job as the head of a programs at one of their locations.”
“Really?” Tom lit up. “That’s amazing. Congratulations, darling. That’s really incredible.”
“Thanks. I think I’m gonna take it. I love the work we do here and this way I’d get to do it year round. And they let me pick the location.”
“I’m so proud of you.” Tom smiled. “Where is it? What location did you pick?”
“England.” You smirked. “More specifically, London. Somewhere in the Claygate region I believe. Right near this town called Kingston. Have you heard of it?”
“Are you kidding? You picked London?” Tom asked and excitedly grabbed your hands.
“I did.” You grinned. “Do you know anyone who’s looking for a roommate?”
“Me. “He said immediately. “You can move in with me and we can live together and be together all the time and give this thing a real shot.”
The hope in his eyes as he held your hands melted your heart. You brought his hands to your lips and kissed them.
“I would like that. All I want is to be with you, Tom. Not just in the summer. I want you in every season.”
“Wow.” He clicked his tongue. “Obsessive girlfriend much?”
“It’s hard not to be obsessed with you.” You laughed as you leaned in to kiss him. He cupped your face and kissed you back for the first time in a year.
“I know. Because I’m obsessed with me too.” He said between kisses.
“You should be.“ You said as you pulled away to rest your forehead against his.
“I love you, pretty girl.” Tom said as he tilted your face closer to his with his pinky.
“I love you too.” You replied. Tom smirked and couldn’t help but chuckled at the irony of your first meeting in the office to this one.
“And you said this would never happen.”

Those Summer Nights ~ T.H
chapter eight: summer days drifting away
Series Masterlist

After the s’mores by the campfire, you felt like you were floating on a cloud as you walked to your campers bunk. You opened their cabin door and let out a dreamy sigh.
“Goodnight my beautiful butterflies. Sweet dreams. I can’t wait to see you in the morning.” You said as you blew them each an individual kiss.
“Counselor Y/n, can you braid my hair?” One of your girls asked.
“Of course, princess.” You laughed lightly and went over to her bed. She excitedly sat up and drew her knees to her chest as your gently braided her hair.
Meanwhile, things were going a little differently in the caterpillar bunk.
“Lights out everyone.” Tom announced. “Don’t piss in your bed. I’m talking to you, Timmy. 4 times is enough.”
“I won’t.” Timmy mumbled.
“You better not. Because I’ll make you sleep in it, you pig.” Tom said before shutting their cabin door. He walked through the campgrounds until he spotted you by the campfire. Tom broke into a child like grin at the sight of you and took off running. He scooped you up and spun you around as you laughed in his ear.
“There you are. I thought they were never gonna get to bed. The s’mores had them bouncing off the walls.” You said once Tom put you down.
“I know. My campers didn’t go down easy either. I had to staple of their sheets shut.”
“That’s a joke, right?” You chuckled as you kept your arms around his neck.
“Yeah. I’m joking.” Tom laughed nervously as he eyes darted to the side. Your smile dropped as you got the feeling he was lying.
“Tom, did you staple your kids-“
Tom quickly stepped forward and connected your lips in a kiss. You immediately forgot about what you were talking about and melted into the kiss. You wrapped your arms tighter around his neck as he hands rubbed up and down your body.
“I don’t want to go to sleep yet. I’m not ready for this day to end.” He sighed once he pulled away.
“Me either. Come with me.” You smiled deviously and grabbed Tom’s hand. You started running towards the highest point in camp without ever dropping his hand. When you finally got to your destination, you looked at Tom to see his reaction.
“Lovers Lake?” He raised an eyebrow. “Ohhh. I see what’s going on here.”
“Shut up. This is the highest point in camp. That makes it the best place to see the stars.” You explained as you grabbed his hand again. You lead him closer to the water as he watched you with the biggest smile on his face.
“Stargazing?” He asked. “You’re so cliche.”
“Oh.” Your smile fell. “We don’t have to.”
“We’re doing it. Come here.” Tom pulled you into another kiss before getting down on the ground. You got down beside him and tilted your chin up to look at the stars.
“Do you know anything about stars?” You asked him.
“I do. That one’s the Big Dipper.” He explained as he pointed to some stars. “It’s only visible in certain parts of the state. And that one’s Orions Belt. George Washington used it as a guide when he rode his ship to the battle of Saratoga. The one over there, that’s Betelgeuse. They wrote a Broadway show about the man who discovered it.”
“You’re making all of this up, aren’t you?” You smiled as you looked over at him.
“Yep. That’s the North Star. If you fly past it and go straight on till morning, you’ll find Neverland.” Tom continued before looking back at you. You exchanged a smile and scooted closer to him.
“Wow. I didn’t know you were such an astronomer.” You teased as you propped yourself up on an elbow.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, pretty girl.” Tom said as he did the same. “For instance, did you know I was a dog dad? I have a dog called Tessa. My moms been sending me pictures of her everyday. I miss her so much.”
“You’ll see her soon. Camp ends in two weeks.”
Tom stopped smiling and slowly looked down at the ground. He laid back down on his back and let out a little sigh.
“What’s wrong?” You asked as you rested your head on his chest.
“Camp ends in two weeks. We won’t get to see each other anymore.” He smiled sadly as he looked at you. Your smile slowly faded too and you fell silent, just listening to the sound of his heartbeat.
“I don’t want to think about that right now. I just want to enjoy the rest of our time together.” You said after a beat of silence. Tom nodded and slid down a little so his face could he next to yours. Instead of kissing you again, he tilted his chin up and pressed a long kiss to your forehead. You smiled at the gesture and reached out to hold his hand.
“I wish we got together sooner.” You whispered. “I wish we had more time.”
“Hey.” He smiled and tucked your hair behind your ear. “We have tonight.”
You nodded and gave him a sad smile. You laid there and stared at each other for a moment in the cool summer night breeze. The only sound coming from the crickets chirping in the forest. Tom pulled you closer and rubbed his hands up and down your arms, feeling your goosebumps.
“Are you cold?”
“A little.”
Tom sat up and pulled his hoodie off before draping it over you like a blanket.
“Here.” He smiled and laid back down.
“Thanks.” You chuckled and pulled it tighter around your body.
“I told you.” He smirked. “I can be a gentleman when I want to be.”
“Are you forgetting when you put an on fire marshmallow in my hair? That wasn’t very gentle.” You teased as you rolled onto your back to see the stars.
“No, I remember that. Can I tell you a secret?” Tom asked as he turned to see the stars as well.
“Go for it.”
“I was in love with you. That’s why I was so awful to you. The hot sauce in your food, pulling your hair, unraveling your tie die shirt so the colors would run, all of it. That was just to get your attention.”
“What?” You looked at him in surprise. “You liked me? But you were so mean to me.”
“I know. It was my idiotic ten year old logic.” He shrugged and drummed his thumbs together. “I liked you so much and I didn’t know how to handle my feelings. I thought being mean to you would make you like me.”
“And 15 years later, you think overcompensating with dirty jokes and unrelenting flirting would get me to like you.” You cracked a wry smile and nudged him a little.
“Damn. You just peeled this onion all the way to the middle.” Tom furrowed his eyebrows as he thought about what you said.
“I didn’t know you liked me. I honestly thought you hated me. I used to lie awake at night and wonder what I did to make you dislike me so much.” You said as your smile slowly faded. When you talked about it out loud, it didn’t seem as funny anymore. Tom had really tortured you that summer. He was cruel in the way that kids could he really cruel. Now that you knew why he treated you the way he did, you felt unsatisfied.
“You were my first bully.” You said quietly, mostly to yourself.
Tom propped himself up on his elbow and looked at you to gage your reaction. You didn’t sound upset, just thoughtful. You looked over at him and gave him a sad smile to ease the tension.
“I’m so sorry, pretty girl.” He said softly. “I didn’t know it effected you so much. I was such an idiot back that. You didn’t deserve that.”
“It was a long time ago.” You shrugged. “I’m over it.”
“If I ever make you feel that way again, let me know. I never want to hurt you, darling.” Tom said as he tucked some of your hair behind your ear. You gave him a quick smile and moved over to lay on his chest.
“Do you remember the last night of camp? When we were 10?” You said as you traced the pattern of a tree on his chest.
“A little bit. Me and my cabin snuck out after lights out to TP the girls cabin. And then we broke into the mess hall and ate our weight in cheese balls.” He chuckled as he recalled the night. He thought you would laugh too, but you fell silent.
“Why? Do you remember it?” He asked as he stroked your hair. You felt your throat go a little dry and gulped.
“I do. We had voted for swimming to be our last day of camp activity. I was too scared to jump into the water, so you pushed me in.”
“Oh yeah.” Tom nodded. “I do remember that. You were still in your clothes. I pushed you right off the dock.”
“Yep. Anyways, I guess you felt really bad after. Probably because instead of yelling at you like I usually did, I just ran away crying.”
You got quiet again and stopped drawing patterns on his chest. Tom could hear your breathing slow down and looked down at you.
“Then what happened?”
“You found me by the campfire and wrapped me in a towel.” You told him. “Then you asked me to meet you at Lover Lake at 10 o’clock sharp.“
“Wait, I don’t remember us going to Lover’s Lake.” Tom frowned. You got quiet again and rolled away from him to look up at the sky.
“That’s because you never came.” You smiled sadly. “It was your last cruel trick on me before the summer ended. Making me think you were gonna be my first kiss only to stand me up.”
Tom was quiet as he looked at you. He remembered that night differently than you did. For him, it was a reckless night of fun that he hadn’t thought about until now. For you, it was one of your most painful memories.
“I waited all night.” You said after a beat of silence. Tom looked at you again, but you had turned your face away.
“Wow.” He said quietly. “I don’t even remember that.”
“I figured.” You shrugged. “I brought you up here on your first day to see if you remembered that night. But you didn’t.”
“I’m so sorry, darling. I had no idea you were carrying that around this whole time. I must’ve seemed like such an asshole when I started flirting with you after what I did to you.”
“It’s fine. It was a long time ago. And you’re different now.”
“Still. I shouldn’t have done that to you. Ten year old me would’ve been lucky to kiss you.” He stated, drawing a smile out of you. You rolled into your side and propped yourself up on your elbow.
“Yeah? What about…however old you are now you?” You asked though a smile.
“He’d be even luckier.” Tom smirked before leaning in to kiss you.
Week 7
“Good morning campers! Rise and shine! How’s it going? God it’s a beautiful day. Let’s get up and head to the mess hall. I’m ready and excited, are you guys? Lets get this joint jumping!” Tom said through the huge smile as he flicked the cabin light on a off. He campers groaned and sat up in their bunks as Tom began to shake some of them awake.
“What happened to him? He was never like this before.” One of the campers asked his bunk mate as he climbed down from his bunk bed.
“On the first night of camp, he told me that if I didn’t go to bed, a shark would grow legs come out of the lake and eat me. Yesterday, he tucked me in and kissed me Goodnight. He’s been totally different all week.” His bunk mate whispered back.
“Do you think it has to do with those bruises on his neck?“ Another camper joined the conversation.
“Maybe.” He shrugged. “Maybe he fought counselor Jesse again and won.”
“Come on guys! It’s a beautiful day outside. Let’s get out there!” Tom said as he ushered his campers out the door.
“But we haven’t gotten dressed yet.” A camper pointed out as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
“Um…pajama day?” Tom made up on the spot. The campers cheered and ran out the door in their pajamas. Tom followed them out and spotted you on the campgrounds with your campers.
“Hey campers. Beautiful day, huh?” You smiled as you greeted Tom’s campers.
“There you are, pretty girl. I’ve missed you.” Tom grinned and cupped your face to pull you into a kiss. You eagerly kissed him back and smiled against his lips.
“Ew.” The boys gagged and covered their eyes.
“Aw.” The girls hugged each other and pointed.
“I’m never gonna get tired of doing that.” Tom smiled when he pulled away.
“Hello to you too.” You chuckled. “So um, quick question. Are your kids in their pajamas?”
Tom looked away from you to look at his campers. They were all in disheveled pajamas, yawning and scratching their heads as they swatted away mosquitos. He then looked at your campers. The girls were dressed in their camp shirts with their hair done I’m whimsical braids that Tom recognized as your artwork.
“Yeah.” He smiled weakly. “It’s pajama day.”
“Oh. Is it?” You humored him.
“Yeah. You should probably start reading the itinerary. Kinda unprofessional that you don’t.” Tom clicked his tongue to tease you.
“Shut up.” You shoved him slightly.
“Make me.” He came right back and pulled you into another kiss. You kissed him back but kept it short when you heard the campers making sounds again.
“All right, counselor Tom. That’s enough.” You laughed in embarrassment and patted his chest. “Come on kids. Let’s go to the mess hall for some breakfast. Then we’re gonna head to the arts and crafts bench.”
“I know some other things I’d like to do on the arts and crafts bench.” Tom said in your in your ear as you walked behind your campers towards the mess hall.
“Oh my God. Stop it.” You laughed in surprise and pushed him away. “We can’t do that right now. We’re going to the mess hall.”
“I want to make a mess in your hall.” Tom said as he wrapped his arms around your shoulders.
“Ew.” You laughed and rubbed his arms. “Don’t make camp euphemisms. That’s where I draw the line.”
“Come on, pretty girl.” Tom whined and hugged your tighter. “Let me put a little toasted marshmallow between your Graham cracker- okay no. That one was gross. I can’t even finish the sentence.”
“That one was horrible. You’re crazy.” You laughed as you walked into the mess hall with him.
“Crazy for you.” He said as he kissed the side of your head.
After breakfast, you sat with your campers at the arts and crafts bench. Tom was still struggling to start one lanyard as you were finishing your 10th one.
“You gotta finish your lanyards today guys.” You announced. “Next week is swimming week and that’s the last week of camp.”
“Wow.” Tom frowned. “Already? I can’t believe it’s ending.”
“It’s okay. We still have a week.” You assured him and put your hand on top of his. He smiled and nodded and gave your hand a squeeze.
“Are you guys gonna get married?” One of your campers asked. You noticed all the campers at the bench were looking at you and felt a little embarrassed.
“I don’t know.” You said calmly. “Do you want to get married one day?”
“I do.” Another camper chimed in. “My daddy says a man doesn’t really love you until he puts a ring on your finger.”
“Your daddy said that?” Tom asked out of the corner of his mouth.
“My daddy has a gold tooth.” Another camper jumped in.
“My daddy has diabetes.” Her friend replied.
“Okay.” You smiled and clapped your hands together. “Are you guys almost done with your lanyards? I know I am.”
As you helped your campers finish of their lanyards, one of Tom’s campers tapped his shoulder. Tom looked over at him and bent down when the kid beckoned him closer with his finger.
“How serious is this? Because I’ve had my eye on counselor Y/n all summer and I’m not exactly thrilled that you moved in on my girl.” The camper said as he eyed you over Tom’s shoulder.
“What?” Tom asked. “How old are you?”
“Old enough.” The kid whispered as he got in Tom’s face. Toms eyebrows knit together in anger and he took a deep breath.
“You smell like hot sauce.” Tom whispered back. “We don’t even have that here.”
Before the camper could respond, another camper came around the bend and tapped Tom on the shoulder.
“The Beetle bunk has hella illegal contraband. I could get you some fireworks if you want to wow your lady.” The camper whispered in Tom’s ear.
“Really?” Tom was intrigued.
“Counselor Tom.” You said sternly after overhearing the conversation.
“Talk to me after lunch.” Tom whispered to the caller before turning back to you.
“Sorry.” He smiled. “I’m back.”
“Are you guys going to live together when we leave camp? Like you do now?” One of your campers asked. You gulped a little and gave Tom a quick look.
“No, sweetie.” You answered. “We won’t. We live in different countries. Tom lives in England and I live in New York for school.”
“I mean, you could if you wanted to.” Tom shrugged. “My house has room for the four of us.”
“Four?“ You asked him.
“I live with my brother and best friend.” Tom explained. “You’ll love them. You’ve met them actually. They were all at camp with us that summer.”
“Oh my God.” You gasped. “Harry Holland?”
“Yeah. You know him?” Tom wondered.
“I frenched him.” You snorted, making Tom’s smile drop.
“What’s frenching?” One of your campers innocently asked.
“I’ll show you.” A camper of Tom’s replied as he slid an arm around your camper. Tom stared his camper down and clenched his fist, making the kid gulp. He immediately took his arm off the girl and kept his hands to himself.
“If you consent, of course.” He quietly added. The girl smiled and Tom gave his camper a thumbs up.
“So.” You clapped your hands again. “Lanyards! Who wants to finish up their lanyards? I know I do.”
“Wait a minute. We need to backtrack.” Tom held up a finger. “Are you serious? You and Harry?”
“He found me crying after you stood me up.” You shrugged. “And then, you know, he cheered me up.”
“I’m sick right now. Benjamin, finish my lanyard.” Tom shoved his lanyard towards his camper and put his head down on the table.
“My tummy hurts.” Benjamin whined and gripped his stomach.
“Benjamin, where’s your lanyard?” Tom asked as he picked his head up. Benjamin looked around nervously and Tom let out a groan.
“Oh God. Come on. Let’s go see the medic.” Tom stood up and motioned for Benjamin to follow.
“I’m sorry.” Benjamin said as he reached for Tom’s hand.
“You said that the last three times, Benjamin.” Tom said as he took his campers hand.
“I like the colors.”
“I know you do, Benjamin.” Tom sighed. “I know you do.”
“I’m gonna take this kid to the medic. And then maybe an exorcist. I’ll be right back.” Tom told you as he squeezed your shoulder.
“Okay. I’ll keep an eye on your campers.” You looked up at him and smiled.
“Thanks, pretty girl.” Tom returned the smile before leaning down to kiss you.
“They just kissed.” One of your campers excitedly whispered to her friend. Tom left with Benjamin and you returned your attention to your campers. You picked up Tom’s lanyard and absentmindedly began to weave it for him.
“So.” You said once again. “Did anyone finish their lanyard?”
“Do you love counselor Tom?” One of your campers asked. Your eyes widened a little in surprise and you let out a short laugh.
“I don’t know.” You shrugged. “No more questions unless they’re about your lanyards.”
“Does he love you?” Another camper asked.
“I don’t know. And that was not a lanyard question.” You playfully pointed at her and hoped that would end the conversation.
“Are you guys still gonna be together when camp ends?” A third camper asked. This one wasn’t as easy to dodge as the others. You smiled tightly and stopped fiddling with Toms lanyard.
“I don’t know.” You sighed. “I really don’t know.”
Before your campers could ask you anymore questions, Tom came back to the arts and crafts bench. He put a hand on your shoulder as he sat down to let you know he was there.
“I’m back. Benjamin is having some quiet time.”
“He threw up, didn’t he?” You scrunched your nose.
“Like so much.” Tom confirmed. “So much throw up.”
“Aw. I warned you this would happen.” You laughed and rubbed his back. “We’re almost done here.”
“Oh no. I can’t find my lanyard.” Tom said as he looked under the table. “I was finally starting to get it too.”
“Here. I worked on it for you.” You chuckled and handed him his lanyard back.
“You did?” He lit up. “It’s beautiful. You’re too good to me.”
The campers watched you impatiently to see if you would kiss again. Even the boys were invested in your relationship at this point. Instead of giving them the satisfaction, you just scooted closer to each other as you showed Tom how to continue this lanyard.
“I’ve shown you how to do this about a hundred times this summer.” You reminded Tom as you guiding his weaving of the lanyard.
“I know.” He smiled at you. “I just like watching you do it.”
After dropping your campers off at the mess hall, you and Tom went for your daily stroll around the campgrounds. You were sharing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, courtesy of Pasquale. You each had one half of the sandwich in one hand while you held hands with the other.
“Can you believe this is one of our last lunch time walks around the campground?” Tom asked as he gave your hand a gentle squeeze.
“I don’t want to think about that.” You shook your head. “I just want to enjoy our time together.”
“I wish we got together sooner. We could’ve been frenching behind the mess hall all summer.” Tom teased, calling back to your conversation on the arts and crafts bench.
“I know.” You chuckled. “We were literally roommates in our own cabin and never hooked up. Who does that?“
“I wouldn’t say never.” Tom said pointedly. “I’m still pulling out splinters from last night, personally.”
“I meant before we got together, dummy.” You laughed and playfully nudged him with your shoulder. Tom stopped walking and stopped just to look at you.
“Yeah.” He smiled. “I guess we like to do things differently.”
You gave Tom a soft smile before stepping closer to him. You wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him into a kiss. This kiss felt different as you both knew it would be one of your last times. Tom cupped your face and held you as close as possible as he kissed you, feeling tears well up in his eyes at the thought of letting you go. He wiped his eyes and continued to kiss you, trying to soak up every last second he had with you. The kiss was only interrupted by a mosquito biting Tom on the neck. He pulled away when he felt the bite and slapped his neck to shoo the bug away.
“Ugh. I hate these mosquitos.” He groaned. “They’re driving me crazy. I can’t wait to get out of the woods.”
“You’ll survive. One more week, right?”
Just as his mind had been taken off of your impending departure, he was reminded once again. He only had one more week before you flew off to live in another country and he wouldn’t get to see you anymore. Not wanting to worry you or dampen the mood, Tom threw on a smile and pulled you into a hug.
“Yeah.” Tom sighed. “Just one more week.”

Week 6
You had managed to avoid Tom as much as you could after the puppet show. He wanted to find you and apologize, but you managed to escape him every time. One night, Tom sat with his campers as they ran around after dinner. He looked around the campgrounds for you but didn’t see you anywhere. He did, however, see Jesse.
“Hey dude. Can you grab some more firewood for the campfire later? We’re making s’mores.” Jesse asked as he not so subtly flexed his muscles at Tom.
“But the wood is all the way at the other end of the camp.” Tom groaned. “Can’t you get someone else to do it? Ask Y/n. I’m sure she’d be happy to do it for you.”
“Nah. She won’t listen to me.” Jesse sighed. “She’s still pissed that I kissed her.”
Tom did a double-take when he heard this and felt his heart stop. He slowly stood up and walked closer to Jesse as his jaw clenched.
“You kissed her?” Tom asked while flexing and unflexing his hand in his struggle to stay calm.
“Yeah. Like a week ago.” Jesse shrugged. “She shoved me off of her so hard, dude. I got nauseous. Like, vitiligo or something.”
“It’s vertigo.” Tom said through clenched teeth. “Why did she shove you?”
“It was kinda a sneak attack kiss.” Jesse admitted. “I do it to girls a lot. I call pearl harboring them.”
“You pearl harbored Y/n?” Tom raised his voice.
“Yeah. Why?”
“I’m gonna kill you.” Tom shouted before tackling Jesse to the ground.
Back in your cabin, you were putting concealer around your eyes to hide the fact that you were crying. You heard a knock at your door and quickly smiled in the mirror before going to answer it.
“Hey lovely ladies. What’s up?” You asked the campers outside your door.
“Counselor Y/n! Are you coming to watch?” She asked as she bounced up and down in excitement.
“Watch what?” You wondered.
“The fight!” Another camper exclaimed as all the girls giggled.
“Fight?” Your eyes widened. “Who’s fighting?”
“Counselor Tom and Jesse!” Another camper told you. You gasped and looked up ahead only to see all the campers in a huge circle in the middle of the camp.
“They’re killing each other! This camp is awesome.” A boy exclaimed as he ran by your cabin.
“Oh no.” You gulped and took off running towards the crowd. You pushed your way through and found Tom and Jesse wrestling each other on the ground.
“Tom! Jesse! Stop it!” You screamed and wrapped your arms Tom’s waist. You pulled him off and held him back as Jesse got up off the ground. He had a bloody nose and they were both covered in dirt.
“I’ll kill you.” Jesse said as he put his fists up.
“I’ll kill you harder.” Tom broke free from your grasp and tackled Jesse again. The campers cheered and rooted for Tom as they rolled around on the ground.
“Get off of him. What is wrong with you?” You asked as you pulled Tom away again. You put your hands on his face to make him look at you to try and calm him down. Some campers booed at the fight ending.
“I’m gonna fight him.” Tom told you. “I’m gonna fight him up real nice.”
“Not if I fight you first.” Jesse warned and lunged at Tom again. You quickly got between them and held your arms out on either side so they couldn’t get near each other.
“Do either of you realize you already fought?” You genuinely asked them.
“Let me at him.” Tom said as he tried to get around you.
“I knew her first.” Jesse shouted. “And longer.”
“I am longer.” Tom declared. You looked between the two men desperately trying to fight each other over you and couldn’t help but smile.
“Oh my God. Guys, no. Fighting over me?” You smiled and tucked your hair behind your ear. “Oh my word. Stop it this minute. Don’t fight over me. You guys are so crazy.”
When you were busy swimming in the euphoria of being the main character, Tom had managed to tackle Jesse again. Campers cheered as they started to fight again.
“Stop tackling me man!” Jesse whined. “Who does that?”
“If you like being kissed so much, kiss the dirt. How does the dirt taste, Jesse?” Tom asked as he pushed Jesses face into the ground. You quickly pulled Tom off of him and this time, stood in front of him.
“That’s enough.” You told them. “You guys are so immature.”
“He started it!” Jesse said and pointed to Tom.
“I don’t care who started it. I’m ending it.” You shouted at Jesse as you held Tom back.
“You’re just mad because you lost.” Tom shouted over your shoulder.
“Tom, go back to the cabin. I’ll talk to you in a minute.” You told him as you held him face between your hands. He gave Jesse one last death glare before nodding.
“Jesse, go to the main office. You have a call waiting.” You sighed and pointed to the main office.
“From who?” Jesse panted and rubbed his aching arm.
“The head of the camp. I reported you, perv.”
The girls in the camp oo’d as they pointed at Jesse and laughed. They all called him a pervert in a sing-song voice, making Jesse turn bright red in a mixture of anger and embarrassment.
“This isn’t over.” He pointed at you.
“It literally is.” Tom shouted back. “You touch her again, you’re a dead man.”
You thought Tom had left, but he was still right behind you, looking on you proudly for reporting Jesse.
“Cabin. Now.” You demanded. Tom made a face at Jesse before turning to address the campers.
“Let this be a lesson to all of you. Don’t ever kiss someone without their consent or you will be beaten up. Maybe not by me, but somebody will do it. And if they don’t, then it will be me. I will beat you up.” Tom warned as he looked around at all the campers. They all nodded repeatedly and some took notes. He looked at you again and gave you a small smile before walking towards your cabin.
“Shows over everyone.” You clapped your hands to get the camper's attention. “Go back to your bunks. And I’m skimming all your letters home this week. If anyone mentions this to their parents, I’m burning your letter.”
They slowly dispersed and went back to their cabins, chatting excitedly about the fight. You sighed and looked at the ground, smiling a little at all the clumps of ripped up dirt. No one had ever fought someone for you before, and it made you feel oddly special.
After checking on yours and Tom’s campers, you went back to your cabin. Tom was sitting on your bed in his pajamas and wet hair. He looked up at you nervously as his leg bounced. You walked past him and went to the bathroom, returning shortly with a first aid kit in hand.
“Hey.” He gulped as you walked over to him. You stood in front of him and tilted his chin up towards you.
“Don’t talk. Your lip is busted.” You said as you dabbed a hydrogen peroxide soaked Cotten ball.
“I’m sorry I fought Jesse.” He said as he looked up at you with guilty eyes.
“I said no talking. Hold still.” You instructed as you squirt some Neosporin onto a Q tip. You tilted his chin up and dabbed it on his lip.
“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.” He continued. “Jesse is an asshole. I should’ve known it was all his fault.”
“Stop moving. I don’t want you to get a scar.” You said as you dabbed some Neosporin on his eyebrow cut.
“Let it scar. It will only enhance my already incredibly handsome face.”
You couldn’t help but crack a smile at his joke. You picked up his hand and cleaned off his knuckles before bandaging him up.
“You smiled.” He noticed. “Does that mean you forgive me?”
“No.” You said flatly. “It doesn’t.”
“I’m sorry I’ve been ignoring you all week. I was just really hurt when I thought you kissed Jesse.”
“I’m serious. Stop talking. Your lip needs to heal.” You said ad you reapplied the Neosporin to his lip.
“Can I just say one more thing?” He asked ad he gently took your hand.
“Fine. One more.” You agreed, only because you were curious.
“I love you.”
You stopped patching up his cuts and froze for a moment. You looked down at him to see if he was joking, but he looked completely serious.
“What?” You asked him. Tom didn’t answer but continued to look up at you.
“Tom, what did you just say?” You repeated.
“You said I couldn’t talk anymore.” He mumbled and scratched behind his ear.
“Fine. You can talk.”
“I said that I love you.” Tom repeated as a shy smile tugged at his lips.
“Tom.” You sighed. “You don’t love me. You’ve known me for six weeks. And one summer when we were 10.”
“What is time?” He shrugged, never dropping his smile.
“Are you being cute or do you actually not know? You hit your head pretty hard back there so I can’t be too sure.”
“I may be in a lot of physical pain and possibly concussed.” Tom prefaced. “But I know how I feel. And I feel like I’m falling in love with you.”
“Tom.” You said softly as a smile tugged at your lips.
“I was gonna tell you that after you kissed me. But we were interrupted by those bugs that they named after the Owl City song.”
“Fireflies?”
“Great song.” He nodded. “My point is, I was gonna tell you that night before I saw you kissing Jesse. Or Jesse kissing you, I mean. I ran back to the cabin in tears and turned the radio on to make myself feel better. And guess what song came on?”
“Jessie’s Girl?” You chuckled.
“Exactly. That made it so much worse.“
You smiled coyly at Tom as you took a minute to process his words. You put the supplies back in the first aid kit before taking a seat on his lap. Tom looked at you curiously and hesitantly wrapped his arm around your waist
“Hey.” You tilted his chin up towards you. “I have to tell you something.”
“I already know my fighting form was way off.” He sighed. “I’m rusty. I haven’t fought a man since April.”
“It’s not that.” You chuckled. “I was gonna say that I’m falling in love with you too.”
“Really?” He lit up. “But you said that would never happen.”
“I know. I was wrong.” You shrugged and wrapped your arms around his neck. Tom broke into a genuine smile before slipping back into his cocky persona.
“Women usually are.” He nodded, making you playfully smack his arm.
“Stop talking before I change my mind.” You replied as you leaned in to kiss him. Tom eagerly kissed you back, feeling the same butterflies in his stomach that he had the first time.
“Why did you change your mind?” Tom asked when you pulled away. His voice was less confident than he usually sounded and you knew this was of the rare times he was vulnerable around you.
“I don’t know. I guess you did.” You smiled softly. “I know it’s early and we haven’t known each other very long, but I’ve never felt this way before. Even if it’s just a summer fling, I’m still the happiest I’ve been in a long time.”
“Funny you say that. So am I.” Tom returned the smile and leaned in to kiss you again. Before your lips could touch, a camper ran by your cabin and knocked on the doorframe.
“Are you guys coming?” She asked as her friends giggled behind her. You could hear them making smooching sounds and whispering a little too loudly about what you and Tom had been doing.
“Coming to what?” You gulped, fearing it was another fight.
“Counselor Ben set up s’mores around the fireplace!” Another camper explained.
“He called it a bribe. What’s that?” Your camper asked you.
“I have no idea. Let’s go eat s’mores and not think about what we’ve heard or seen today!” You clapped your hands and stood up.
Tom watched as you scooped your smallest camper up and held another’s hand as you walked towards the campfire. One of your other campers hesitantly reached up to take Tom’s hand, knowing he had a reputation of swatting hands away. Tom noticed her reaching out and bent down to scoop her up. She excitedly wrapped her arms around Tom’s neck as he ran to catch up with you. You looked over your shoulder and saw him carrying your camper, smiling a little to yourself. He smiled back and put his free hand on your back to guide you to the campfire.
Once you got to the campfire, you gentle set your campers down and made sure they were all accounted for. Tom noticed how you made sure each and every camper had a s’more before you sat down to make one for yourself. While you were helping one of the youngest boys clean his face, Tom assembled you a s’more. You finally came and sat down beside him as he was putting it together.
“I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve been told I can make a perfect s’more.” Tom told you.
“Oh yeah?” You playfully raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah. Here. See for yourself.” He said as he gave you the s’more.
“Aw. You made one for me?” You smiled in surprise and took it from him.
“Of course I did. I told you, pretty girl. I can be a gentleman.” He teased as he brushed some crumbs from the Graham cracker off your lip.
“I wish it didn’t take me to so long to believe you.” You smiled sadly as you were reminded of how soon camp would end. Tom sensed your sadness and took it upon himself to comfort you. He brushed your hair out of your face before leaning in to kiss you, making up for the one interrupted earlier in your cabin. A couple campers saw this and reacted accordingly, giggling and whispering amongst themselves.
“Counselor Y/n.” A camper tugged at your sleeve. “Is he your boyfriend?“
You looked around at all the campers and laughed at the way they were all of the edges of their seat to hear your answer. You looked back at Tom and smiled softly at the way the campfire was lighting up his features. Finally, you slipped your hand into his and rested them on your lap, in full view of the campers prying eyes.
“Yeah.” You smiled. “He is.”

Those Summer Nights ~ T.H
chapter six: it turned colder
series masterlist

When you were walking back to your cabin after putting your campers to bed, you saw Jesse in the distance. You quickened your pace in hopes of avoiding him but he just did the same. He caught up to you and you stopped walking to give him an awkward smile.
“Hey.” He smiled softly. “I’ve been meaning to find you all day. Do you think we could talk?”
“Do you think you could survive if my put my foot all through way up your ass?” Tom said as he appeared by your side. You smiled in relief and leaned against his chest as Tom stared Jesse down.
“Yeah. I could.” Jesse said as he puffed out his chest.
“How did I ever let you go?” You mumbled sarcastically.
“Look, I’m really sorry about what happened. We were friends for a long time and it kills me that we don’t talk anymore. Could you please let me apologize?” Jesse asked, only looking at you this time. Tom looked at you to see what your reaction was and you gave him a gentle nod.
“It’s okay.” You assured him. “I’ll see you at the bunk, okay?”
Tom squeezed your shoulder and gave Jesse one last look before walking away. An awkward silence immediately filled the air as you looked anywhere but Jesse.
“I’m sorry about the whole date thing. You were never supposed to hear that conversation. Truth is, I saw you and Tom getting closer and I got jealous. It reminded me of how close you and I used to be. I didn’t mean what I said to him. I didn’t just want to hookup with you. I only said that because I figured a girl as amazing as you would never want to date a guy like me.” Jesse apologized and gave you his best puppy dog eyes. You wanted to gag, but you decided to civil.
“Well thank you for apologizing.” You shrugged. “I hope we can move past this and forget it ever happened.”
“Me too. Come here. Bring it in.” Jesse said as he opened his arms to you.
“Oh, I don’t know.” You laughed awkwardly and took a step back.
“Come on. For old times sake?” He asked again and motioned for you to come closer. You figured he wouldn’t stop asking until you hugged him, so you took a step in his direction. As soon as you got closer, Jesse put his hands on your face and pulled you in a kiss. You tried to pull away but he held you firmly in place.
“Ew. Get off of me.” You finally shoved him off and stumbled backwards.
“What’s the matter with you? I thought you liked me.”
“I used to. Before I knew you were a slimy little bitch.” You shouted as you wiped your mouth.
“Come on. You know this is gonna happen. It’s been brewing for years. Just give in.” Jesse said as he tried to pull you back into his arms.
“It’s so much worse coming out of your mouth.” You mumbled and continued to back away from him.
“What?” He wondered.
“Nothing. Don’t talk to me ever again. Perv.” You snapped before walking away. You quickly ran back to him, kicked him in the balls, and then ran back to your cabin.
“You will not believe the conversation I just had.” You stated as you shut the door behind you.
“I would, actually.” Tom folded his arms. “Because when you decide to make out with your boss in the middle of the campground, people notice.”
“What?” You laughed in shock. “I was not making out with Jesse. He kissed me.”
“I know. I saw. As I just explained.”
“It wasn’t like that Tom. I swear. Can you just let me explain?”
“I don’t want to hear your explanation.” Tom held up a hand. “I know exactly what happened because I know exactly what kind of girl you are.”
“Excuse me?” You scoffed. “What kind of girl am I? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You like the chase.” Tom said simply. “You lead me on all summer and dangled a relationship over my head just so that I would continue to pursue you. And as soon as you knew you had me, you switched sides and ran to Jesse. That’s what I mean.”
“That is not what happened.” You stated firmly as Tom turned his back to you. He started to throw his shirts until a duffel bag and you realized he was leaving.
“Come on. Let’s just talk about it. I don’t know what you saw but it wasn’t like that.” You said as you tugged on Tom’s arm. He stopped packing and looked at you with tears in his eyes.
“Just admit it.” His voice cracked. “You never liked me back. You just liked the attention.”
“Are you crying?”
“No.” He wiped his face and moved past you.
“Yes you are.” Your eyes softened. “I’ve never seen you cry before. Tom, please. Let’s talk about this.”
“I don’t think I can talk to you right now. You really hurt me.”
“I’m sorry.” You said quietly. Tom looked at you for a minute and smiled sadly.
“I was so happy after you kissed me. I freaking called my mom and told her. I thought we were finally gonna be together.”
You both fell silent as Tom picked up his duffel bag and kept his eyes on the ground. You opened your mouth to try and explain yourself again but he beat you to it.
“I guess I’m just an idiot.” He shrugged and started towards the door.
“Where are you going?”
“You’ve wanted your own room all summer.” He smiled tightly. “Now you have it. Congratulations.”
Tom left and slammed the door behind him, leaving you alone in the cold cabin.
Week six
“Good morning, campers. Beautiful day, isn’t it?” You asked as you sat down on the arts and crafts bench. The snappers greeted with with smiles but Tom’s eyes remained on his lanyard.
“Careful there, counselor.” Tom clicked his tongue. “You called the sunset last night beautiful too. I know you like to two-time but I’d be careful with Mother Nature.”
The campers were too young to understand, but not you. You tightened your jaw before turning to Tom with a fake smile.
“It’s been a week, Tom. Are you going to be mad at me forever?” You asked in a cheerful tone so the campers wouldn’t suspect something was wrong.
“Yes.” Tom matched your tone with the same stiff smile. Your smile dropped and you went back to your lanyard as you tried to think of another way to get Tom to talk to you.
“Did you at least read the itinerary? We have to put on a puppet show today.”
“Ew.” Tom said without looking up from his lanyard.
“It’s a tradition. The Butterfly and Caterpillar counselors always do it.” You told him. Tom didn’t respond and you let out a sigh.
Later that day, you and Tom sat behind a little puppet show stage with the curtains closed. You had a blonde puppet on your hand and Tom had a small felt bear on each of his fingers.
“Are you ready for the show?” You asked politely. “The kids always love it.”
Tom was still giving you the silent treatment as he toyed with the biggest bear on his finger.
“I bet you’re really good at storytelling.” You tried again. “The kids loved your performance at the talent show. I bet they’re really excited to see you again.”
Tom let out a short sigh and looked away from you. You could see a faint blush on his face despite his ongoing anger towards you.
“Please, Tom.” You quietly pleaded. “There’s only two weeks left of camp. You’ll have to talk to me eventually.”
“No I don’t. Don’t talk to me unless it comes out of her mouth.” He finally talked to you as he pointed to your puppet. You let out another sigh and pulled the curtains open.
“Hey kids.” Tom plastered on a smile. “Who’s ready for a puppet show?”
“Have you guys heard of Goldie Locks and the Three Bears?” You asked the kids as you moved your hand to make the puppet talk.
“I haven’t.” Tom realized and looked at you in a panic.
“Just read the script.” You whispered to him and nodded towards the script on the ground.
“Once upon a time, there was a girl named Goldie Locks. And she broke into the home of three bears.” You said in a higher voice while making your puppet talk.
“Because she was a vandal.” Tom said in an even high voice. You shot him a look before turning back to the audience with a smile, all while the campers giggled.
“The bears weren’t home because their oatmeal was cooling off or something.” You continued, realized you also didn’t know the story.
“Oh. I do know this story.” Tom replied in his normal voice, making the campers laugh again.
“Goldie Locks sat in mama bears chair but it was too soft.” You returned to the show.
“Yes. Because that’s a common problem people face.” Tom made one of his bear puppets say.
“Then she tried Papa bears chair, but it was too hard.” You continued.
“I don’t know why she ran to Papa Bears chair.” Tom told the audience. “It seemed like she liked Mama bears chair. Mama bears chair was probably really hurt to see Goldie Locks sitting on another chair.”
The kids laughed as you looked up to the sky in annoyance. You threw on another fake smile and moved your puppet closer to Tom’s bears.
“Goldie Locks didn’t mean to sit in Papa bears chair. The chair sat on her.” You said through your puppet.
“Mama bears chair doesn’t believe that. Mama bears chair knows Goldie Locks and Papa bears chair have history.” Tom replied in the same sweet tone, moving his beard as he spoke.
“Then Goldie Locks sat in baby bears chair. And it was just right.” You ignored Tom’s antics and got back to the story.
“There’s a third guy?” Tom asked in his regular voice. The campers burst out laughing as you stared Tom down.
“Goldie locks then ate the oatmeal. One was too hot, one was too cold, and one was just right.” You continued the story.
“She is awfully comfortable in their house considering she broke in.” Tom made the baby bear say.
“After eating the oatmeal. Oh my God, wait. It was porridge.” You remembered. “Whatever that is. After she ate the porridge, she felt sleepy.”
“So she went home.” Tom said in a high pitched voice.
“No. She went up to the bedrooms to take a nap. But Mama bears bed was too soft.”
“The bed used to be harder but Goldie Locks told the bed to back down. Goldie Locks wanted a gentle bed. But once she got it, she didn’t want it anymore.” Tom made one of his bears say, making you roll your eyes.
“Papa bears bed was too hard. But baby bears bed was just right.” You tried to ignore him again as the campers laughed.
“Who is this baby bear? Why doesn’t he have a name? Is his name baby?” Tom made his Papa bear puppet ask your puppet.
“Then, the three bears came home and discovered something horrible.” You said dramatically and made your puppet stare at the kids.
“She was really a brunette!” Tom gasped. You couldn’t help but crack a smile as the kids roared with laughter.
“Goldilocks woke up and I honestly don’t remember how this story ends. Or what the moral is.” You said through your puppet.
“Don’t break into bears houses, kids.” Tom said in a high pitched voice.
“Don’t break into anyones houses.” You added.
“Really? You’re correcting me? Haven’t you done enough?” Tom asked you in his normal voice but still made his puppet move.
“When are you gonna stop punishing me for something I didn’t do?” You made your puppet ask.
“Never.” Tom said as he pushed his puppets face close to your puppets face. “Now why don’t you go run off into Papa bears arm like you’ve been dying to do all summer?”
“Screw you, Tom.” You said quiet enough for only him to hear and threw your puppet to the ground.
“Wait, darling.” He took his puppets off and ran after you. You went far enough away from the kids before turning around.
“You know, I’m really glad this is all a joke to you. Just like I was when we were kids. You just love to get the last laugh, don’t you Tom? You just love to humiliate me.”
“Darling-“
“And just so you know, it was never about the attention.” You said with tears in your eyes. “I really liked you. I wish you would believe me.”
You walked away before Tom had a chance to say anything. He stared at you until you faded away into the distance, feeling more and more guilt settle into his stomach with each step you took.

Those Summer Nights ~ T.H
chapter five: summer lovin’
series masterlist

Week 4
When you woke up in the morning, Tom was nowhere to be found. His bunk was unmade, as it always was, with a note lying on his pillow.
“Meet me in the kitchen.” It read it his sloppy handwriting. You smiled a little before quickly getting dressed.
“Hey. I missed you this morning.” You said as you walked into the mess hall kitchen.
“Sorry I had to leave you. I see you got my note.” He smiled and gestured to the note in your hand.
“I did. What’s all this?” You wondered and nodded to all the bowls and ingredients he had out.
“Pasquale gave me a sneak peak at the menu for this morning.” Tom explained as he handed you the daily menu.
“Scrambled eggs?” You scrunched your nose.
“Yeah. I know you get grossed out eating them if you think too hard about it.” Tom chuckled.
“I can’t help it. The texture is disgusting. And I’m a picky eater.”
“I remembered that.” Tom pointed to you. “I couldn’t let you go hungry all day so I talked to Pasquale and he said we could cook before the campers get up.”
“You set this all up so I wouldn’t have to eat scrambled eggs?” You smiled in disbelief when you realized just how much Tom had prepared.
“Yeah. Is that too much?” He asked, sounding unsure of himself for the first time ever.
“No. It’s perfect. Thank you.” You gave him a reassuring smile before leaning in to kiss his cheek. Tom’s face burned in a shy pink blush that you pretended not to notice.
“So what are we gonna make?” You asked him.
“Blueberry pancakes.” He told you. “Because it’s the only recipe Pasquale had that was in English.”
“I love it.” You laughed. “Come on. I’m hungry.”
Tom helped tie an apron around your waist before getting to work. Now that he knew he had a chance with you, he was flirtier than ever. Only this time, he had a new tactic.
“Excuse me, sorry.” Tom put his hands on your waist and brushed past you as he grabbed something he clearly didn’t need. He did it again two seconds later, making you giggle.
“Sorry.” He said as he put blueberries onto your cooking pancake by enveloping you in his arms from behind. You playfully rolled your eyes as he kept one hand on your shoulder while the other hand helped guide your hand that was holding the spatula.
“Sorry. Didn’t see you there. Sorry.” He continued to tease you as he purposefully bumped into you. You preferred this to the relentlessly flirting, mostly because you thought it was cute that he was making up excuses to touch you.
“I have to say, I’m impressed.” You said as you piled up the pancakes on a plate.
“You are?”
“Uh huh. I’m wearing my shortest pair of shorts and you haven’t made one comment about them.” You teased him.
“Don’t take my silence for indifference, love. I noticed the shorts. I’m just too much of a gentleman to comment on them.” Tom replied as he held up his hands.
“Oh, are you?” You raised an eyebrow.
“Yep.” He shrugged and never once looked down at your shorts.
“Hm. Have you ever seen Legally Blonde?”
“No.”
You gave Tom an innocent smile before purposefully knocking a fork to the floor. You slowly bent down and grabbed the fork before snapping back up. Tom watched you and cleared his throat, quickly looking away when you stood up. You smirked when you noticed his blush and began to cut up a pancake.
“Now that is an impressive pile of pancakes.” Tom complimented. You stabbed a piece and blew on it before holding it up.
“Open up. I want you to have the first bite.” You smiled. Tom returned the smile and opened up his mouth. You cupped your hand under his chin to catch any crumbs as you fed him the pancake. Tom swallowed the bite with a smile on his face before taking the fork from you to feed you a piece.
“Wow. You make a pretty good pancake.” You told him.
“I make an even better boyfriend.” He winked at you and popped another piece in his mouth.
“We’ll see.” You smirked and put the plate down. You divided the pancakes up on to two plates and handed Tom his. As you ate together, you couldn’t help but wonder something in the back of your mind.
“Can I ask you something?”
“9 inches.” Tom replied immediately.
“Shut up.” You shoved him. “That’s not what I was gonna ask.”
“Then what were you gonna say, love?” He asked between bites.
“Why me?” You wondered. “You’ve been chasing after me since the first day and you didn’t even know me. Why did I become the object of your affection or whatever?”
“Because you’re beautiful.” Tom said simply.
“I don’t believe that. There is no way you act like this every time you find a girl beautiful.”
“I don’t.” He admitted. “But there’s just something about you. As soon as I saw you, I wanted to know you. And I figured if I acted like an idiot on purpose, I couldn’t act like an idiot on accident.”
“I have to say. Your logic is pretty solid. You definitely act like an idiot.” You teased, making Tom laugh.
“I know. I’m sorry about all the flirting, love. I don’t normally act like that.” He said quietly as he held your gaze.
“You don’t have to be sorry.” You shrugged. “I liked some of it.”
“Did you?“ He smirked and leaned in a little.
“I said some.” You smirked and leaned in as well.
“That’s good enough for me, pretty girl.” He said lowly as his eyes dropped to your lips. Before he could kiss you, you shoved a blueberry into his mouth with a wicked smile. He returned the smile as the chewed on the blueberry.
“This isn’t over, love.” He warned. “I’m gonna get that kiss.”
“Yeah?” You smirked. “We’ll see.”
Week 5
“Welcome campers to our midsummer talent show! Who wants to go first?” You said into the microphone as you stood on the wooden stage. All your campers blinked back at you, none of them wanting to be the first to get on stage. You looked around the crowd before looking to Tom for help. He got up on stage and stood by your side.
“I think they’re a little shy.” He whispered to you.
“Yeah.” You frowned. “No one wants to be the first one up.”
“I have an idea.” Tom winked at you and grabbed a microphone from another counselor.
“Would you guys feel better if counselor Y/n and I kicked this off?” Tom asked into the microphone.
“What are you doing?” You lowered your mic to whisper to him.
“Come on.” He grinned. “We’re singing a song.”
“What? I don’t sing.”
“Neither do I. But we’re gonna do it anyway.” He told you before going over to the sound system. He whispered something to the counselor behind the board and you watched them both nod.
“Tom, I really don’t sing.” You repeated when he came back on stage.
“Just trust me. The kids will love it.” He assured you as the beginning of a song started to play.
“I don’t know this song.” You whispered to him as you listened to the music.
“Yes you do. It’s in there somewhere. Deep in your heart.” He poked your heart gently before raising his mic to his lips.
“But I don’t-“
“Summer loving had me a blast.” Tom sang into his mic with a surprisingly good voice.
“Summer loving happened so fast.” You sang before you knew what you were doing. Tom gave you an excited smile and an encouraging nod.
“I met a girl crazy for me.” Tom sang as he tucked some hair behind your ear.
“Met a boy cute as can be.” You sang and rolled your eyes as Tom pointed to himself and mouthed “me?”
You continued to sing the chorus, gaining confidence as you went. The kids nervous smiles melted into grins of excitement.
“She swam by me. She got a cramp.” Tom sang as he moved his arm like a wave.
“He ran by me. Got my suit damp.”
“I saved her life. She nearly drowned.” Tom sang before deadpanning “Jesse.”
“He showed off splashing around.” You laughed through your next line.
“Summer sun, something's begun. But uh, oh those summer nights.” You and Tom sang together as you looked in each other’s eyes.
“Oh well, oh well, oh well oh, uh. Tell me more, tell me more. Was it love at first sight?” The campers sang from their seats.
“It was.” Tom said into his microphone, making you laugh again.
“Tell me more, tell me more. Did she put up a fight?” The boy campers sang.
“Don’t love that line.” You said into your mic.
“Took her bowling in the arcade.” Tom sang as he twirled you under his arm.
“We went strolling, drank lemonade.” You sang in response.
“We made out under the dock.” Tom smiled through his line and cupped your chin.
“We stayed out 'til ten o'clock.” You playfully swatted his hand away. “Summer fling don't mean a thing.”
“But uh, oh those summer nights.” Tom sang to you as he pulled you closer by your belt loop. You wagged a finger at him and strutted away.
“He got friendly holding my hand.” You sang as Tom slipped one hand into yours.
“Well, she got friendly down in the sand.” Tom made eyes as you as he sang the cheeky line, all while moving his hand in a downward motion.
“He was sweet, just turned 18.” You sang while circling around Tom with your hand on his shoulder.
“Well, she was good, you know what I mean.” Tom replied as he followed you around like a lost puppy. You continued to sing the song as you did some soft choreography on stage together. You were just having fun and singing as if no one was watching, something you had never done before you met Tom. The campers ate up every second of the performance, practically jumping out of their seats to sing the chorus with you.
“It turned colder, that's where it ends.” You sang and dramatically threw your hand over your forehead.
“So I told her we'd still be friends.” Tom said as he took your chin between his fingers again.
“Then we made our true love vow.” You sang with a smile.
“Wonder what she's doin' now.” Tom sang back with a soft smile. You were looking directly into each other’s eyes as you sang and suddenly, the crowd disappeared.
“Summer dreams ripped at the seams.” You sang together. “But, oh, those summer nights.”
When you finished your songs, you lowered your mics but never dropped eye contact. You both panted as smiles broke out of your faces.
“Give it up for counselors Tom and Y/n!” Another counselor said into their microphone as they came on stage. You grabbed Tom’s hand and held it up before bowing for your campers. They all cheered and clapped as you walked off stage. Once you were back on the ground, you threw your arms around Tom and pulled him into a tight hug. Tom spun you around before carefully setting you down on the ground.
“That was so much fun.” You gushed. “I’ve never sung in public before.”
“Me either.” He grinned. “I always wanted to, though. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be Billy Elliot on the West End.”
“I bet you’d still look good in a tutu.” You shrugged with a flirty smile.
“I know I would.” He flirted back as he took a step closer to you. You couldn’t help but smile as you looked Tom up and down. He said he was gonna be a gentleman for you and you liked that he was a man of his word,
“Thanks for making me do that. You totally brought me out of my comfort zone. You’ve been doing that all summer, actually.” You smiled shyly at him.
“I’m glad. I like this confident version of you. Not that you weren’t amazing before.” He assured you. “It’s just nice to see you loosen up and stop doing things that the itinerary tells you to do.”
“The itinerary is important.” You said as you took another step towards him.
“I wouldn’t know.” He smiled. “I never read it.”
Your smile slowly slipped off your face as your eyes fell down to his lips.
“Tom.”
“I know, I know. I’ll read it one day. I promise.”
“Tom.” You said again, with urgency this time.
“Just as soon as I find out what an itinerary is. I’ve heard it’s like a menu of the events of the day but-“
You went up on your tiptoes and kissed him before he could finish his sentence. Tom’s eyes flew open before fluttering shut. He put one hand on your face and the other around your waist and he pulled you tighter against his body. When you pulled away, you exchanged shy smiled.
“You just kissed me.” He said in disbelief.
“Sorry.” You shrugged with a coy smile. “Couldn’t help it.”
“But it hasn’t been five weeks yet. I haven’t proven to you what a good boyfriend I can be.” He reminded you as he tried to process what had just happened. Before you could respond, a camper ran up to you.
“Counselor Y/n! Come catch fireflies with us.” She said as she tugged on your hand.
“I’ll be right there, sweetheart.” You smiled at her. She nodded and ran back to her friends.
“Are you coming?” You asked Tom.
“In my pants, yeah.” Tom quipped.
“And he’s back.” You chuckled. “There’s the Tom I know.”
“Sorry. Couldn’t help it.” Tom smirked and used your words from before.
“Come on. Let’s go catch some bugs.” You slipped your hand into his and pulled him back towards the campsite. Tom smiled to himself as you held his hand as he thought to himself about how this was the first time you initiated something between you. You only dropped his hand when one of your youngest campers pulled you away. You gave Tom an apologetic smile before getting down on your knees or help your campers catch lightening bugs. Tom watched your curiously before looking over at his own campers. He saw the little boy who’s hand holding he once rejected standing by himself. Tom went over to him and got down on his level before giving him a smile. You looked over your shoulder at one point and saw Tom helping his campers catch the bugs. They all watched him with wide eyes, enchanted by his every movement. A lightening bug landed on Tom’s arm and he flexed his muscle, making the bug light up. You laughed and excused yourself before going over to Tom.
“Hey stranger.” You softly kicked his side to alert you to his presence.
“Well hello beautiful.” He smiled and stood up. “Back so soon? I mean, I knew you would be. I’m just pointing it out to you so you know how pathetic you are.”
“Please.” You laughed at his joke. “Like you haven’t been staring at me this whole time. You still have my chapstick on your lips by the way.”
“I’m watching you to figure out what you’re doing. I’m trying but I’m not catching any.” Tom blushed as he wiped your chapstick off his lips with his fingertips.
“Probably because you dose yourself in big repellent every morning.” You said as you easily caught another lightening bug.
“And who’s gotten the least amount of bug bites this summer?” He teased. “This guy. Don’t think I don’t hear you scratching your ankles all night.”
“Shut up. Here. Take mine.” You laughed and opening your hands a little to give Tom some of your bugs.
“What? You caught so many.” He gasped as you held your hands together to keep the bugs from flying away.
“Yeah. This isn’t my first rodeo, Holland.”
“They must like you.” Tom smiled at you. “That’s how cool you are. Even bugs like you. I wish they liked me.”
“It doesn’t matter if they like you or not. Because I like you. And I’m better than any bug.”
“That’s pretty conceited of you to say.” Tom scrunched his nose. “Bugs are pretty rad.”
“Shut up.” You laughed and leaned in to kiss his scrunched up nose. Tom was surprised by the affection and desperately wanted more.
“Can you meet me by our cabin before dinner?” He asked. “There’s something I want to tell you.”
“Okay. Sure.” You smiled back at him. Tom hesitated for a moment before leaning in to kiss you again. You kissed him back but kept it quick so your campers wouldn’t see. Unbeknownst to either of you, Jesse was watching the interaction from the woods. He clenched and unclenched his fists, eyes only on you.

chapter four: tell me more
Synopsis: you don’t like the new camp counselor, but he really likes you
Series Masterlist

Week 3
On your daily walk around the campgrounds while your campers ate lunch, Jesse ran up to you and Tom. Tom was less than happy to see him ever since the lake incident, but you had decided to let that be water under the bridge.
“Hey. I’ve been looking for you.” Jesse smiled as he looked at only you. Tom tightened his jaw and stepped closer to you as he shot daggers at Jesse.
“You have?” You asked.
“Yeah. I wanted to see how your first few weeks of camp went.” He said and gave your arm a gentle punch. Tom let out a less than subtle sigh and rolled his eyes.
“Other than drowning, I would say it went pretty well.” You replied, making Tom smirk.
“It’s been great for me too. Y/n has been showing me the ropes. She’s an excellent counselor.” Tom said as he put a hand on your shoulder. Jesse glared at Tom’s hand before giving him a fake smile.
“I’d love to hear all about it.” Jesse returned his attention to you. “Can we grab dinner tonight?”
“All of us?” You asked and gestured to Tom.
“I was thinking just me and you.” Jesse replied before giving Tom a smug look.
“Oh. Okay. Sure.” You shrugged.
“It’s a date.” Jesse smiled at you as Tom rolled his eyes. He was about to walk away but stopped to pull something out of his pockets.
“Oh, and one more thing. Walkie talkies. We’re giving them to all the counselors now. It’s for safety.” Jesse said as he handed you and Tom a walkie talkie.
“Okay. Thanks.” You said as you took the device.
“Yeah. Thanks.” Tom nodded curtly, never letting up on his glare.
“Counselor Y/n! I need help!” A camper called from the door of the mess hall.
“Coming!” You called back. “Excuse me for a second, boys.”
Tom and Jesse watched as you ran to help the camper. An awkward silence fell into place as Tom and Jesse exchanged awkward smiles.
“Hey, do me a favor?” Jesse spoke up.
“Yeah. Sure.”
“Stay away from Y/n.” He narrowed his eyes. “I don’t know what your game is but she’s mine.”
“Perhaps you haven’t met Y/n. She isn’t anyones.” Tom chuckled as he stepped up to Jesse.
“I’m serious. You think you’re all charming and cute because you’re new? Well I’ve known Y/n for years and we’ve built up quite the connection. Shes had a crush on me since she was a camper here and I know you see that. The girl is mine. So back off.” Jesse said as he pushed Tom a little.
“And what if I dont?” Tom shrugged as he came right back.
“Then you’ll regret it.” Jesse said lowly and shoved Tom harder. Tom looked down at his chest, where Jesse’s hands had been, and laughed a little.
“Did you just shove me?” Tom asked.
“Yeah. What are you gonna do about it?”
“Nothing. Since I’m not 8.”
“Psh.” Jesse scoffed. “You just don’t want to start a fight you know you won’t win.”
“Oh, I would absolutely win.” Tom said simply. “But that’s not the point. The point is, I’m not gonna fight you for Y/n.”
“Because you know you’ll lose.” Jesse said and gave Tom another shove.
“Look, Jesse.” Tom sighed. “I’m sorry that you’re such a little bitch that you have to threaten me because you know at the end of the day you’re nobodies first choice. But you don’t need to take that out on me. I had no control of how much of a little bitch you actually are. It’s probably your daddy’s fault as I imagine he’s a little bitch too. All I’m asking is you keep in mind that Y/n a smart girl. She can make her own choices. If you feel so threatened by me that you need to tell me to back off, that’s on you.”
“Hey guys.” You said as you ran back up to them. Tom and Jesse stepped apart but never dropped their angry glares.
“Woah. What did I miss?” You laughed awkwardly and looked between the two of them.
“Nothing. I’ll see you tonight.” Jesse winked at you before walking away. Tom rolled his eyes and started to walk back towards the mess hall.
“Did that really just happen? Did Jesse just ask me out?” You smiled in excitement and grabbed Tom’s arm.
“I think so.” He faked a smile as he replayed his conversation with Jesse in his head.
“He’s never done that before. I always thought he thought I was too young for him or something.”
“How old is he anyway?” Tom wondered.
“Like 29? That’s not too weird, right? Lots of couples have age gaps.”
“You’re a couple now?” Tom laughed shortly as he gave you a look.
“I’m just saying.” You playfully rolled your eyes. “If he asked me out, it might lead to something more.”
“Do you want it to?” Tom asked quietly as he feared for the answer.
“I mean, I’ve liked him since I was a camper here.” You shrugged.
“That’s kinda gross.” Tom grimaced. “He’s known you since you were a camper and now he’s asking you out?”
“It’s not gross. Don’t damper my excitement. I was just starting to like you.” You teased Tom, making him smile a little.
“I thought so too.” He said under his breath before going into the mess hall.
That night, you got ready in the bathroom while your campers ate dinner in the mess hall. Tom’s leg bounced in anxiety as he waited for you to finish. Finally, the bathroom door opened and you stepped out in a lavender colored sun dress.
“How do I look?” You asked as you finger combed through your hair.
“You look beautiful.” Tom said genuinely, still in awe from the way you looked. He unapologetically looked you up and down as you smoothed out your dress.
“Aw.” You smiled softly. “Thanks.”
“You look really good in that dress. It’s a really nice color on you.” He continued. “I’ve never seen you in something other than cargo shorts. Even when we were campers.”
“You’ve only known me again for a few weeks.” You reminded him as you applied some lipgloss. Tom smiled sadly as he watched you layered on the shiny gloss, knowing it might end up on Jesse’s lips at some point.
“Still. You look amazing.” He said softly, all traces of his normally cocky self gone.
“Thank you. It’s also Jesse’s first time seeing me in something other than cargo shorts so I wanted to make a good impression.” You said as you took one last look in the mirror.
“You definitely impressed me. But I think you look beautiful in anything. The first time I saw you in pajamas, I felt my heart stop.” Tom gave you his signature smile and patted his chest.
“Such a flirt.” You chuckled.
“Such a beautiful girl.” He said genuinely. You and Tom made eye contact and let it linger. You were excited about your date with Jesse, but you couldn’t help but wonder about Tom. He looked upset and you had a feeling it was because of your date with Jesse. He’d really changed the past few weeks and you’d grown to like the guy he became.
“Are you sure about this Jesse guy? You said you’ve known him a long time. Isn’t it a little weird that he just decided to ask you out now?” Tom asked without meeting your eyes.
“I don’t think it’s weird.” You shrugged. “He was probably just nervous before.”
“Maybe. Or maybe it had something to do with us.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean you’ve been going to this camp for years and the summer he asks you out is the summer I show up. The timing seems a little too coincidental. Do you think maybe he got a little jealous of our relationship and stepped in?” Tom asked as he got off the bed. You frowned and took a step back, not liking what Tom was suggesting.
“Tom, you don’t know me and Jesse. We have history. I’ve always liked him and I think he likes me too. This has nothing to do with you.” You said as you stepped back into the bathroom.
“I feel like it does. I think he got jealous that you and I got so close and he’s trying to take you away from me.”
“Um, he can’t take me away from you. I’m not yours.” You said and smiled tightly at him in the mirror.
“Don’t get mad at me. I’m expressing concern as your friend.” Tom said as he leaned against the bathroom doorway.
“We’re not friends.”
“Oh, so we’re back to you pretending that you hate me? I thought we got passed that.” He said as he gave you an unamused look.
“I’m not pretending. I’m just setting the record straight. I think you’re the one who’s jealous.” You replied as you turned around to face him.
“I’m not trying to pick a fight.” Tom told old you. “I’m just trying to look out for you. You shouldn’t go on that date. I get bad vibes from Jesse. I don’t think his intentions are what you think they are.”
“Tom, you don’t even know him. What’s makes you say that?”
“He threatened me.” Tom admitted. “He told me to stay away from you.”
“Now you’re just making stuff up.” You laughed and walked past him.
“I swear I’m telling you the truth. He said I would regret it if I didn’t back off.”
“And I’ve been telling you to back off since the day we met.” You reminded. “Maybe Jesse was just sticking up for me.”
“Why are you getting so defensive? Jesse is bad news. Trust me. I’m just trying to protect you.”
“I don’t need you to protect me. You’re not my boyfriend!” You shouted in frustration. Tom took a minute to let that sting him before responding.
“I…I know that.” He said quietly. “But we-“
“There is no “we”, Tom.” You groaned. “I told you a millions times. This is never going to happen. Just give up already.”
Tom opened his mouth but quickly shut. As hurtful as that was, you were right. You weren’t together and he technically had no reason to be mad about you and Jesse. He knew he wasn’t your boyfriend, but he thought the moment you shared after the drowning incident at least took him out of enemy territory.
“Fine. Yeah. Sorry. I’ll back off.” He nodded and looked down at the ground. You immediately felt guilty for yelling at him and felt your shoulders slump.
“Good. That’s what I want.” You lied and folded your arms.
“I’m gonna take a walk.” Let you finish getting ready.” Tom said without meeting your eyes.
“Thanks.” You smiled and tried to get him to look at you, but he kept his eyes down. Tom left without another word and you felt your stomach sink like a rock. You looked down at your dress and sighed. You didn’t feel pretty anymore. You felt as ugly on the outside as you did on the inside.
Meanwhile, Tom was trying to blow off some steam as he walked around the campgrounds. He said hi to some campers near the campfire and wiped some s’mores off their faces before walking behind the mess hall.
“Oh. It’s just you.” Jesse rolled his eyes when he saw Tom.
“What are you doing back here?” Tom asked.
“It’s the only place I get cell service. I’m trying to call my girl.” Jesse mumbled as he typed away on your phone.
“Wait, what?” Tom raised his eyebrows. “You have a girlfriend?”
“She’s not my girlfriend. She’s just my hookup for when I’m home, you know?” Jesse smirked before going back to his phone.
“I thought you liked Y/n.”
“I do. That’s why I’m taking her out tonight. 8 weeks is a long time, man. I need a little action.”
“No, I thought you liked Y/n. Are you just using her for hookups?” Tom asked angrily as he stepped closer to Jesse.
“Yeah. Why?” Jesse snorted and looked Tom up and down.
“You can’t go on that date with her tonight.” Tom said lowly.
“Oh yeah? And and not?”
“Because she likes you for your personality, which I have yet to see, and you don’t feel the same. She doesn’t know you’re just looking for a hookup.”
“Well she’ll find out soon enough.” Jesse smirked and went to walk away.
“You can’t play with her feelings like that.” Tom grabbed his arm to stop him. “You have to tell her what your intentions are before you take her on a date.”
“Does it matter, Tom?” Jesse rolled his eyes.
“Does it feel like a party everyday, Jesse?” Tom matched his tone.
“What?” Jesse wondered.
“Call the date off. Now.” Tom said as he gripped his arm harder.
“Dude, did you forget who you’re talking to? I’m your boss. And I can do whatever I want to whoever I want. And right now, I want Y/n.” Jesse replied as he pulled his arm away from Tom.
“I’m gonna tell her.” Tom warned. “I’m gonna tell her that you’re just trying to use her.”
“Go ahead. I heard your little fight when I walked by your cabin. She’ll never believe you.”
“You… might be right.” Tom admitted. “But I’m still gonna try. I really like her and I’m not gonna let you hurt you. She deserves to be taken out on a nice date by a nice guy. Not manipulated by someone she thought she could trust. You don’t deserve her. And you never will.”
“What, and you do deserve her?” Jesse snorted. “You’re not that different from me. You’re just as much as an asshole as I am.”
“Whatever man.” Jesse scoffed and walked away. Tom gave him one last glare before going back to the cabin. When he walked in, you had your back turned with something in your hands. When you heard him come in, you turned around and moved what you had in your hands behind your back.
“Hey.” He greeted you with a sad smile, unsure if you were still angry with him.
“Hey.” You said softly.
“Look, I know you’re mad at me but-“
Tom was cut off by you rushing into his arms. You pressed your face against his chest and hugged him tightly. Tom stumbled back a little in surprise before wrapped his arms around you.
“Woah. Hey. What’s going on?” He asked in a soft voice as he stroked your hair.
“Your walkie talkie was on.” You told him, voice muffled from his chest.
“Oh no.” His eyes widened. “You heard all of that?”
You pulled away enough to look at him but kept your arms around his torso. Tom thought you would be upset, but you had a grateful smile on.
“I did. I heard every word. And it made me realize something.” You told him.
“Realize what?”
“That maybe you’re not as bad as I thought.” You smiled shyly. “You totally defended my honor back there. Even after I yelled at you and didn’t believe you when you tried to warn me about Jesse. I thought you were just some cocky womanizer, but now I’m starting to think you’re actually a pretty good guy.”
Tom looked at you curiously, trying to see if you were serious or not. He’d been trying to convince you that he was a good guy for the past three weeks. Somehow, the conversation that you were not supposed to hear was the thing that persuaded you.
You noticed that Tom was lost in his thoughts and smirked a little. You placed your hands on his chest and smoothed out a wrinkle in his shirt before looking up at him.
“And maybe,” you began, “you’re a pretty good guy who would make a pretty good boyfriend.”
This brought a smile to Tom’s face. Now you were speaking a language he could understand. He gently rested his fingertips on your waist and tilted your chin up to look at him.
“I wouldn’t be a good boyfriend, love. I’d be an excellent boyfriend.“ He smirked.
“Then show me who you really are. Drop the cool guy act and the relentlessly flirting and just be yourself. If like what I see, then I’ll meet you by Lovers Lake at the end of the summer.”
“The makeout spot?” His eyes widened.
“Amongst other things.” You shrugged with a coy smile.
“But why do I have to wait whole summer?” He whined. “Camp doesn’t end for another 5 weeks.”
“Are you saying I’m not worth it?” You raised an eyebrow.
“No. I’m saying I want to kiss you right now.” He said, making your smile drop. Your eyes flickered to his lips and you almost gave in but decided to be strong.
“You can kiss me in 5 weeks. If you behave.”
“Okay. I can do that.” Tom decided. “I can wait that long if it means I have a chance with you. I’m gonna use the next 5 weeks to show you how good of a boyfriend I can be.”
“Are you sure you can do it? You’d have to be a gentleman.”
“Darling, please.” He smirked. “I can be the gentlest of men.”
“Yeah.” You matched his smile. “You’ve proved that to me today.“
“I’m glad.” His eyes softened. “All though, I thought saving your life after you drowned would earn me some good guy points. I didn’t realize all I had to do was yell at Jesse. I would I’ve done that on our first day if I knew it would win you over.”
“Well, you haven’t won me over yet, Holland.” You reminded him. “But at the rate you’re going, I say these next five weeks won’t be too bad. Think you can make it that long?”
“For you?” He smiled. “I could do anything.”

Week 2
“All right campers.” You clapped your hands. “Today we’re making lanyards.”
“Yay!” Tom cheered. “Lanyards!”
He wrapped an arm around you and whispered in your ear, “What are lanyards?”
“You’ve never made a lanyard? How did you get this job?” You wondered as you pushed his arm off.
“Because I am very charming.” He said suavely. “And my aunt is on the board.”
“Really? I haven’t noticed.” You said sarcastically.
“You knew about my aunt?”
“No, dummy.” You playfully hit his chest. “I noticed that you were charming.”
“Ohhh.” He realized. “You’re adorable when you flirt with me, darling.”
“Tom.” You glared at him.
“Oh, sorry.” He held up his hands. “You’re adorable when you flirt with me, pretty girl.”
“Stop it. Sit down and make your lanyard.” You said as you walked over to the wooden bench. You started on your lanyard as Tom hesitantly picked up the plastic string. He tried to tie two pieces but they immediately came apart.
“I have no idea what I’m doing.” He mumbled as he twisted two strands together.
“What is that?” You laughed when you looked over at what he was doing.
“Duh. A rainbow.” He scoffed.
“It’s pink and purple. Neither of those colors are in the rainbow.”
“Purple is.” Tom said smugly as he held up his creation.
“Violet is. That’s not Violet.” You pointed to his lanyard. “You’d find that color on a Lisa Frank poster.”
“Wow.” He rolled his eyes. “Where’d you learn that, smarty pants?”
“The colors of the rainbow?”
“Yeah.”
“Kindergarten.” You smiled sweetly. “You should go sometime. It would do you some good.”
“Maybe you could tutor me.” He smirked. “It wouldn’t me the first time I’ve had a crush on my teacher.”
“Shut up and focus on your lanyard.” You nudged him playfully.
“What lanyard?” He sighed and dropped his lanyard. “I can’t do this. When do we go swimming?”
“Next week.”
“Next week?” Tom’s eyes widened. “What?”
“You didn’t read the itinerary?”
“Don’t ask me that. You’ll just be disappointed.”
“You’re ridiculous.” You chuckled. “I’ll read it to you tonight.”
“Ooo. So we have plans tonight?” He wiggled his eyebrows.
“No. Give me that.” You dropped your smile and took his lanyard from him.
“What are you doing?” He asked as you began to fold the different colored strings around each other.
“Starting your lanyard for you. Here.” You handed it back. “Keep doing it like that.”
“Wow. That’s really cool.” He said sincerely as he admired what you had made.
“I know. Does anyone else need help with their lanyard?” You asked the table. Every single camper looked at you raised their hand.
“Oh wow.” You sighed. “Okay. Who’s first?”
After an hour of making lanyards, you clapped your hands it get your campers attention.
“We’re gonna come back to lanyard making tomorrow.” You told them. “Follow counselor Tom and I over to the rock climbing wall.”
You picked up your youngest camper and held your free hand out for another camper to take it. Tom slipped his hand into yours and managed to keep it there for a minute before you realized. You gasped and dropped his hand but couldn’t help but crack a smile at his attempt.
“All right campers. I am now going to demonstrate rock climbing.” Tom said once you reached the rock wall.
“Hold on a minute.” You frowned. “Why do you get to demonstrate?”
“No reason.” Tom shrugged. “I’m just stronger and faster. That’s all.”
“Move aside. I got this.” You narrowed your eyes at him and pushed him out of your way. You started to climb the rock wall and immediately regretted your decision.
“I thought you didn’t like heights.” Tom asked as you struggled to go any higher.
“I don’t. But I like you even less.”
“Careful up there, pretty girl. You might break a nail.” Tom taunted from the ground.
“I might break your face while I’m at it.” You grumbled as you went up another peg.
“Please be careful. You don’t have to prove anything to me.” Tom’s time changed when he saw you beginning to shake.
“I’m not doing this for you.” You called down and went higher.
“The view I’m getting right now says otherwise.” Tom teased as he looked up at your butt. You let out a groan and reached for a red rock.
“I wouldn’t grab that one.” Tom told you.
“I don’t need you help. AH!” You screamed as you hand slipped off the tiny rock.
“Told you.” Tom said. “Please come down, darling. You’ve made your point.”
“Fine.” You rolled up it eyes before looking down. You gulped loudly and quickly looked back up. You had climbed higher than you thought and that fear of heights was starting to kick in.
“What’s wrong?” Tom called up at you.
“I can’t.” You shook your head. “I’m too high. I hate heights.”
“Darling, just come down the way you came.”
“I can’t.” You said again and he could hear the fear in your voice.
“Then let go. I’ll catch you.”
“That’s way worse. I’ll take my chances.” You said and started to climb down.
“Don’t step on that-“ Tom tried to warn you, but it was too late. Your foot slipped off the rock and you fell towards the ground. You didn’t even have time to scream before you were safely in Tom’s arms. You looked at him in shock and wrapped your arms tighter around his neck.
“Woah.” He smiled at you. “Does this mean you fell for me?”
“Put me down. I’m embarrassed enough.” You quickly scrambled to get out of his arms as the campers snickered to each other. You noticed them laughing and looked down at the floor.
“Counselor Tom, can you show us how it’s done?” One of the older boys snorted. Tom looked at you and felt guilty for embarrassing you.
“I can’t, actually.” Tom told the campers. “I’m really scared of heights. I can’t even look at the rock wall. I’m not nearly as brave as counselor Y/n.”
You looked up in surprise as a smile tugged at your lips. Tom returned the smile and winked at you to let you know he had your back.
After rock climbing, you led the kids to the mess hall for lunch. You and Tom grabbed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from the kitchen before heading outside for a walk.
“You’re really great with kids, you know.” Tom told you. “They adore you.”
“I’ve known a lot of them for a few years.” You shrugged. “You form a special bond after a while.”
“I hope I can do that.” He sighed. “I can’t get my campers to stop putting worms in each other’s beds.”
“If you threaten to take away desert privileges, they stop right away.”
“That’s a good tip. Do you have anymore?”
“Always wake them up ten minutes early, but tell them it’s 8 o clock.” You advised. “Then, when they ask for ten more minutes, you can give it to them and not be late.”
“Wow. That’s really smart.” He smiled. “You’re really good at this.”
“I try.” You shrugged and looked away to hide your smile. “You’re good too.”
“Please don’t flirt with me. I find you repulsive.” Tom grimaced before cracked a smile.
“I’ve noticed.” You played along. You continued to walk around the campgrounds in a comfortable silence, both of you feeling a connection beginning to form.
Week 3
“Woah. To what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you in a bathing suit?”
“It’s swimming day. You need to start reading the itinerary.” You told Tom as you pulled your jean shorts on over your red one piece. You could feel Tom’s eyes on you the entire time as you pulled your camp shirt on over your bathing suit, but you didn’t mind.
“But then I wouldn’t wake up to lovely surprises like this.” He smirked as he climbed down from his bed.
“Get your swim trunks on and meet me by the dock. I’ll go wake up your campers. Again.” You said pointedly.
“Thank you, darling. You know, some would say we act like an old married couple.” He smiled as he walked to the bathroom.
“No one would say that.”
“Wishful thinking, then.” He winked at you before shutting the bathroom door.
You woke Tom’s campers up and waited with them by the lake. He showed up soon enough in light blue swim trunks and his yellow camp shirt.
“Aw. You look like a jelly bean.” You laughed as he walked up to you.
“And you look as beautiful as ever.” He replied, sounding completely genuine. You gave him a small smile before turning to the kids.
“All right campers. We’re gonna start things off with a little race. Everyone, to the dock.” You announced and led them out onto the dock. They swam and raced for two hours until you blew a whistle to call them back in.
“Everyone out of the water.” You called. “It’s lunch time.”
“Counselor Y/n. I lost my googles.” A younger camper of yours said as she pulled on your hand.
“Where did you lose them, sweetie?” You asked, bending down to be her height.
“Out in the water. They’re pink. My moms gonna be so mad. I always lose them.” She said as her eyes filled with tears.
“Hey, don’t cry. I’ll go get them, okay? Wait here.”
“Thank you.” She sniffled as you wiped her face with the bottom of your shirt.
You gave her a reassuring smile before heading back towards the lake. It was a camp rule that you were forbidden from going into the lake alone, but you figured you’d been in and out in a minute. You looked around and saw that the lifeguard was off duty now, making you feel a little uneasy. You shook your nerves out and got back into your bathing suit before wading into the water. Once your feet stopped touching the ground, you plugged your nose and went under. You forced your eyes open and looked through the murky lake water for her goggles. You spotted them in the distance resting in the middle of a large patch of vegetation and swam towards them. Once you picked them up, you tried to swim you but found your leg tangled in a fishing net. You tugged on your leg but the net was tightly wrapped around you ankle. Water bubbles floating up the surface as they escaped your mouth. When you watched them do you, you realized just how far down you were. Your eyes and ears felt like they were going to explode from the underwater pressure. You gave your leg one last tug before feeling yourself be slowly lulled to sleep.
“Where’s counselor Y/n? She always makes us towel hats after swimming.” A camper whined as they tugged on Tom’s hand. Tom looked around to see a bunch of your campers tempting to make towel hats but didn’t see you anywhere.
“I’m not sure.” He frowned. “I thought she was right behind me. She must be around here somewhere.”
He left the campers with another counselor and began to look for you. He saw Jesse by the campfire with his guitar resting on his knee and approached him.
“Have you seen Y/n?” Tom asked him.
“Not since we were swimming.” Jesse shrugged. “Why?”
“I can’t find her anywhere.” Tom told him, growing more worried by the second.
“I’m sure she’s fine. She probably ran to the showers.” Jesse said and went back to strumming his guitar.
“She wouldn’t leave her campers.” Tom insisted. “Especially not with me. She knows how dumb I am.”
“Relax, dude. She’s gotta be around here somewhere.” Jesse brushed him off once again, but Tom was not convinced. He ran back to the campers and gathered them.
“All right, guys. When was the last time you saw counselor Y/n?” Tom asked them.
“When we were in the water.” One camper answered.
“Did anyone see her get out of the water?” He asked, heart sinking as they all shook their heads.
“I did.” One little girl spoke up.
“Did you see where she went went got out of the water?” Tom bent down to her level to ask.
The girl said nothing as her pruny hand emerged from her towel and pointed outwards. Tom followed her finger and stared at the lake. It was completely still and completely empty.
“You saw her get back into the water?” Tom gulped but tried to sound as calm as possible.
“Uh huh.” She nodded. “I lost my goggles. She went back to get them.”
“When did she go back?” He asked slowly, never taking his eyes off the lake.
“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “A while ago. Do you think she found them?”
Jesse came back over and saw the campers staring out at the lake. They were pointing and murmuring to themselves, already theorizing what might have happened to you. Hesse frowned in confusion before looking at Tom.
“Tom? Is everything all right?” He asked when he noticed Tom’s ghastly expression.
“Stay with counselor Jesse. I’ll be right back.” Tom announced to the campers before bolting towards the lake. He dove into the water and began to swim downwards. Jesse couldn’t contain the campers as they all ran to the shore of the lake. They pushed and climbed over each other to get a better view.
“Everyone stay calm.” Jesse announced, but he didn’t feel very calm himself. The kids chattered with anxiety and excitement as they waited to see what was going to happen. Suddenly, there was a ripple in the water towards the back of the lake.
“There he is!” One of Tom’s campers shrieked in excitement and pointed to the lake.
Everyone on the shore watched as Tom emerged from the water with your limp body in his arms. Your skin was drained of color and in your hand, a pair of pink goggles.
“My goggles!” The little girl exclaimed and ran to you and Tom.
“Somebody get a towel. Get every towel. And start the campfire.” Tom instructed as he carried you past the shore. Some counselors ran to start the campfire. Other counselors put a towel on the ground and Tom gently laid you down on it. Campers gathered around to see you, some gasping in horror and others asking a million questions.
“Someone get these campers out of here.” Tom ordered.
“Come on kids. Let’s go get some popsicles.” One of the older counselors led the campers away to the mess hall.
“What happened?” Jesse asked as he knelt by your side.
“Her foot was caught on a net.” Tom replied as he covered your body with towels to try to warm you up.
“How long was she down there?” Jesse asked.
“I don’t know.” Tom snapped. “A long time. Is there a nurse?”
“There’s a medical tent. Didn’t you look at the camp map?”
“Is now the time?” Tom whined as he started to do chest compressions on you.
“Do you know CPR?”
“Does it look like I know CPR? I could crack her chest if do it incorrectly. Go get the medic. Now.” Tom shouted. Jesse nodded and ran towards the medical tent.
“Help me move her to the campfire.” Tom asked the counselors. “Her skin is ice cold.”
Everyone took a corner of the towel and carried you over to the campfire. Tom began to panic at how long the medic was taking, so he started to do chest compressions himself.
“Come on. Don’t do this. Wake up.” He said as he pumped on your chest. He put his head down to listen to your heartbeat and heard nothing.
“Please wake up. Please?” He pleaded and started compressions again. “You have so much to live for. You haven’t even seen me naked yet.”
Tom bent down to listen to your heartbeat again and heart a faint thumping this time.
“Okay. Good.” He sighed in relief. “You’re doing great, pretty girl. Just come back to me. Keep coming back to me.”
He pinched your nose closed and opened to it mouth to blow air into your mouth.
“Don’t do it again unless you see her chest rise.” A counselor told him.
“Do you know CPR?” Tom hoped.
“No. I just watched a lot of Greys Anatomy.”
Tom gave the counselor and angry look before returning his attention to you. He continued doing chest compressions and bent down to blow air into your lungs again. When he pulled away, he saw you stir a little. He patted your cheek to see if you would wake up but you still didn’t open your eyes.
“She’s not waking up.” Tom gulped. “Why isn’t she waking up? And where is the goddamn medic?”
The counselors had no answers for Tom as he went back to CPR. He blew air into your mouth again and felt yout lungs inflate.
“Dih.” Came out of your mouth, barely audible but still something.
“Darling?” Are you trying to say something?”
You coughed again and slowly opened your heavy eyelids. Your eyes met his and he instantly melted.
“Did you just try to wake me up with true loves kiss?” You said, sounding out of breath and weak. He smiled in relief and nodded.
“I did just wake you up with true loves kiss.” He played along. “Some people call it CPR but they obviously have no idea what they’re talking about. I knew it would work since you have such a big crush on me and all.”
“You’re such a dickhead.” You cracked a smile before erupting into a coughing fit. Tom helped you sit up and patted your back as you coughed up water.
“She lives!” Tom cheered before hugging you tightly.
“Move. I think I swallowed a fish.” You pushed him aside and threw up some more water.
“Medics here.” Jesse said as he arrived at the campfire with another man.
“Dude.” Tom looked completely unamused as he gestured to you. You were already awake, no thanks to the medic.
“What? It’s not my fault. He was on lunch break. I had to find him.” Jesse grumbled.
“What happened?” The medic asked you.
“What does it look like happened?” Tom asked as he wrapped a towel around your shoulders, rubbing your arms up and down to warm you. You couldn’t help but smile at how defensive he was being over you.
“Let’s get you back to the medical tent.” The medic said. He and Tom helped you stand up, both feeling the way you were shaking.
“Can you walk?” Tom asked you.
“I think so.” You nodded.
“Cool.” Tom said and scooped you up anyway. You laughed a little but let yourself be carried by him all the way to the medical tent. Tom dropped you off for an examination and ran back to your cabin to get you some clothes. He grabbed the warmest clothes he could find and ran back to you as soon as possible.
“You’re okay. You’re lucky you were pulled out when you were. A few more minutes without oxygen going to your brain could’ve left you with permanent brain damage.” The medic was telling you as Tom came back to the cabin. He smiled at you and sat quietly until your examination was done. The medic left you along for a minute and you changed into the clothes Tom brought you.
“Are you okay, darling? You had me worried sick.” Tom asked now that you were alone.
“I’m okay. Thanks to you.” You smiled softly at him and pulled the sleeves of the hoodie he gave you over your hands.
“You would’ve done it for me.” He said as he scooted closer to you on your cot.
“Probably not.” You shrugged. “I would’ve let you drown.”
“Mean.” He smiled and playfully pushed you.
“I told you. I want my own room.” You replied. Instead of hitting you with a comeback, Tom pulled you into a tight hug. He kept his hand on your head as he held you against his chest, relaxing a little when he felt your heartbeat.
“I’m so glad you’re okay. I was so worried.” He said as he pulled away. He continued to cup your face and you let him.
“Thanks for pulling me out of there.” You smiled softly. “It almost makes up for the time you pushed me in.”
“Almost?” He chuckled. “Saving your life doesn’t make up for me pushing you in the lake when I was 10?”
“Nope. But trying to wake me up with true loves kiss did make you for the time you…” You trailed off suddenly as your smile fell.
“The time I what?” Tom wondered.
“Nothing.” You lied and faked a smile, not wanting to bring up the event of Lovers Lake all those years ago. Tom wasn’t satisfied with your answer and was about to ask more when Jesse came into the tent.
“Hey.” He smiled sheepishly. “So glad you’re okay.”
“No thanks to you.” Tom scoffed. “You told me she was fine. She could’ve drowned down there if I had listened to you.”
You looked at Tom curiously and wondered what you had missed while you were down in the water. Jesse looked embarrassed and Tom just looked angry.
“I’m sorry, okay?” Jesse sighed. “I thought she went to take a shower or something. I didn’t know she was in the lake.”
“It’s fine.” You said to appease both boys. “Did you need something, Jesse?”
“Yeah. I just had a tiny little question. You’re not gonna sue right?” He asked with a hopeful smile. Tom rolled his eyes and gave Jesse a death glare.
“Don’t worry. It was my fault.” You shrugged. “I broke the sacred rule and went into the water alone. And I love this camp too much to sue.”
“Good.“ Jesse smiled in relief. “All the campers are in the mess hall for dinner. You should join us when you’re ready.”
“We will.” Tom said as he wrapped a protective arm around you. This time, you let him keep his arm there and leaned into his side. Jesse watched the two of you with a clenched jaw before leaving the tent.
“We should go to the mess hall. I’m starving and I’m sure the campers saw everything and think I’m a zombie now.”
“What? They didn’t see everything.” Tom’s eyes darted to the side as he lied.
“I’m sure.” You chuckled and went to get off your cot.
“Here. Let me help you.” Tom stood up and picked you up again.
“I can walk, you know. You can stop carrying me everywhere.” You said as he carried you out of the tent.
“Why? So you can go drown again? I’m never letting you out of my sight so get used to this.” He replied, sounding completely serious.
“Eh.” You shrugged. “I guess that’s fine. I could get used to being carried.”
He smiled and carried you the rest of the way. He gently set you down outside the mess hall and tucked some hair behind your ear.
“You smell like the inside of a fish.” He told you with a timid smile on his face.
“Can you please stop flirting with me?” You rolled your eyes before cracking a smile. Tom returned the smile and you stood there for a minute, just looking at each other in the lighting of the setting sun.
“Next time I kiss you, you better be awake.” He said as he opened the door for you.
“What was that?” You asked as you entered the mess hall.
“Nothing.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were laying on your stomach, on your bed, flipping through a book. It didn’t have your full attention as your mind was elsewhere. Music filtered in through your headphones but you weren’t really listening to it, either. It was almost dark outside and with the power still out, the few candles lit in your room did little to help you focus on the words in front of you.
It was also extremely hot. You were sweating just laying there. Your shirt was stuck to you and your shorts felt uncomfortable even if they were cloth sleeping shorts. Letting out a frustrated groan, you drop your head down to the book but immediately wince when you feel it get stuck to your forehead. You have to slowly lift your head and peel the page off with your fingers. Gross.
Moving the book, you lay your head down again and just try to breathe. The events of the day are finally catching up to you, making you a bit tired. Your mind is racing as the memories flash through like a movie playing behind your eyelids. Walking down the street and hearing a distressed, “Just shut up, Pope!” You recognized the voice like it was your own and rushed across the street where you came face to face with your group. JJ had looked at you, guilt shining in his eyes as he looked back at Shoupe, “Yeah, it was all me.”
A distressed sigh -one that matched the one you let out as you helplessly watched JJ get pushed into the back of the cop car- leaves your body in a rush and it makes your bed bounce just a little with the force of it. Kiara had moved up to you as you watched Pope let out a scream and storm off, his dad following him angrily with the hat Pope had thrown to the ground. She explained what she knew and all you could do was close your eyes and let out a breath. You knew JJ getting arrested, again, wouldn’t be good for him. He’s seventeen now, still a minor, but he’s so close to being tried as an adult and that scares you.
“Hey, you want to go to the police station, see if we can do something?” Kie had offered when she noticed that you’d done nothing but stare off in the direction the cop car had gone.
“No, his dad will most likely show up.” you stated and winced at your own words. “I’m just going to go home. I’d say text me but you know, towers are down. And my phone might even be dead with the whole no power thing.”
Kie laughed at your tone and it pulled a laugh out of you as well.
Rolling onto your back, you cover your face with your hands and try really hard to keep your frustrations at bay. You know JJ didn’t do shit this time around. You know what he’s covering for and why he’s doing it but god damn it you wished he had a little bit more common sense sometimes. You wish he wouldn’t put others before himself sometimes, even though that wasn’t in his nature. You wish he didn’t have such a temper sometimes, or the need to prove himself, because then that’d help him stay under the radar a bit easier. But you knew that JJ would never lose those parts of himself, that’s just who he was. Someone who cared about others too much because he didn’t want them to feel what he’s felt his whole life but had a temper like no other.
a/n: this is unedited, so sorry about the mistakes. i saw a lot of trouble going around with plagiarism on wattpad and i did report a lot of books with stolen fics and props to you guys for getting a few actually taken down!! plagiarism and theft of intellectual property is HURTFUL, writers put SO MUCH into their work, and it’s not so you can get some votes on a wattpad page. also, boys using lovely as a nickname is ;alsdjffenve.
How long is forever supposed to be? Months? Years, decades, lifetimes? Forever was supposed to be you and JJ.
Forever feels like the 15 minutes that he’s been fighting you for.
“Y/n, I don’t get why you’re turning this into such a big deal.”
“Stop doing that. Stop acting like I don’t get to be mad. I do! I am! You know, you always do this JJ.” “I do not.” “You do. I’m sick of it. I’m- I’m sorry, JJ, but I’m done. I don’t wanna do this anymore,” you sniffle. You refuse to cry. Not in front of him. “We’re going in circles, I really think it’s time to, to just call it quits.” You shrug. JJ is silent. You wait, you yourself need to process what just came out of your mouth.
JJ is on the couch. He leans on his knees with his elbows and his head is hanging low. He nods. Slowly at first, then quicker.
“Okay,” he sighs, “You’re right. You’re right.” You nod, relieved that he agreed with you. A bigger part of you was upset that he agreed with you. It would’ve been nice if he had put up some kind of a fight.
“So, uh, I’ll go.” “Yeah.”
You collapsed onto the couch, rubbing a hand over your face. A brightly colored magazine was open on the coffee table in front of you. Cheetah printed bold letters spelled out a headline:
The 7 Ways He’ll Tell You He Loves You.
Talk about bad timing. You flipped the cover back over it.
hi hi, for the requests,,,,how about doctor!hoseok who "just doesn't have time for a fickle thing like love" and nurse y/n who hoseok was not impressed by because of some bad first impression but y/n still smiles and greets him and has mad respect for him but is a bit intimidated by him cause, "w-why does the doctor never smile?" and maybe one day nurse y/n gets a paper cut while skimming through reports and updating hoseok and doctor hoseok has,,,,cute 'mang' bandaids in his drawers????
no time for love
drabble week: day one
drabble week masterlist
pairing: doctor!hoseok x nurse!y/n
wordcount: 3k
glimpse: "if something happens to you, you come to me — not to the receptionist you like chatting with on your lunch breaks."
notes: my first entry for drabble week :D all the requests i got for this week are god-tier and i made big effort to make all of this good and ready to go in the soonest!!! i may also be writing this in the middle of the busiest weeks of my last semester, but oh well hee-hee :D
feedback + support mean the world to me!!
"question."
namjoon audibly groans, feeling his soul lift away from his body because there you are again
today's a pretty slow day,, considering that you work in the emergency room!!
you've only had two patients come in so far —
first was the guy who ate too much homemade cookie dough wITHOUT baking the flour and now has an E. coli infection :D
the second was a girl who fractured her arm from falling off the hammock she installed on her ceiling (very valid!!!!)
slow days could be good for the emergency room
namjoon seems to think otherwise <3
"no."
you pout because your senior of like lol five months is already answering you and you haven't even asked yet!! you've always known that joon is a little snippy around the edges but this is just tough love
"but-"
he sighs, trying to occupy himself with even the visitor sheets so that he could pass the time faster, "no, y/n. the prewrap is not for you, and i'm not helping you make it as your headband.
BOOO
it was just one hundred time(s)!! your friend who's still in uni is a soccer captain and she does it all the time!! doesn't even budge in the slightest bit
"that wasn't it, joonie," you whine and the nickname's slowly starting to grow on him, just only irritated a notch lower
you actually lower your voice and lean closer, and your whole demeanor's changed too and namjoon doesn't know WHY he also leaned in, but his curiosity outpowers his eyesore for your cheerful nature
"but is uh, is dr. jung single?"
oh my god
namjoon feels compelled to wrap you with a white sheet <3
"our parents are the ones who's friends, not us us!!"
ok fair point
they're not even childhood friends like people thought they were
he doesn't even know how people knew they were related to a degree somehow!!!!
sometime just five years ago, their parents kept bumping to each other at a vacation cruise and they just hIT it off when their team won in charades
he may not acknowledge it now, but namjoon does have the tendency to consider his friends not his friends and his best friends as strangers
see!!! that's why namjoon treats you like he treats the pickles in his burger!!!
he doesn't <3
"you probably know something but you just don't realize it," you counter and that's what makes him deadpan, putting away his clipboard before settling to look you in the eye
"wanna know what i know?"
"are you kidding? i went to nursing school for-"
"hoseok probably hates you. he looks like he’s still holding a grudge after meeting you for the first time."
???
what is namjoon talk-
NO???!?!?
goosebumps rise on your skin automatically and your neck just tWITCHES upon thinking about it
today's an extra chirpy day :D
you bought new laundry detergent right after your shift the night before, and safe to say that you had the time of your life staying up to do ur laundry
the unlikely mix of lavender, vanilla, tHEN sunflowers make up for a god-tier scent on your scrubs
you'd be lying if you didn't think of diluting it with water then putting it in a spray bottle to serve as perfume
eau de laundry <3
oh oh you ALSO ate a legitimate breakfast and not just munching on finger foods because you're in a rush to leave
the elevator ride from the carpark is also nice since you're alone this time a-
lol maybe not
you hold out the door, eyes looking out in instinct
wow
alright
this is a little... breathtaking
you obviously dON'T know the guy but he's also wearing the hospital scrubs!! you've worked both day and graveyard shifts but you've never really seen him before
he's immensely pretty and your throat just tightens and you swallow immediately
he gives a timid smile when you do, backpack slung from his shoulder and a plethora of things all balanced on his right hand
you SHOULD know him, right??
omg wait a second
"hey cutie!!! are you the intern that's starting today?"
the guy wasn't doing anything in the first place, but the way he just freezes is beyond noticeable
what did you just do :((
"hey, it's okay!! don't be nervous. i had my first day here about, two years ago?? i was so nervous that my supervisor offered me an adult diaper."
what the fUCK did he just walk into
you don't notice the way the guy's face twists from offense to irritation, mouth slightly parted and his brows knitting together at the center
"i hope you're gonna be the one who's shadowing me. i can't wait! good luck :D"
the elevator stops at the right moment, looking back to wave at him goodbye but you sCREECH in your tracks when there's a whole group of people outside the elevator
uhhh why are all the doctors gathered here
what's namjoon even doing there???
the guy from behind you sighs and steps outside, immediately having his hair ruffled as a white coat gets wrapped around his shoulders hastily
dr. jung hoseok
hoseok definitely didn't expect for the whole floor to come welcome him but alright he'll take it ://
the light in your face and soul probably left the same time that DR. JUNG (!!!!) did
namjoon narrows his eyes at you because what are yOU doing there???? and why do you look as stiff as an actor from a netflix original
"hey man," joon goes for a side hug with hoseok, the doctors surrounding them probably looking stunned that all the formalities are ditched
"what's her name?" hoseok spares you a careless glance and namjoon does a double-take to why he'd even ask (and what he should interrogate you not-so-casually for)
"that'd be y/n."
hoseok clicks his tongue, sparing one last look at you before he shakes his head once then leaves
joon's not a man of gossip culture but he whistles as soon as the doctors are all out of earshot, patting your shoulders because you look like your circulation's been cut-off
"now what did you do to piss off one of the most patient people that i know?"
remembering any detail from that interaction makes you want to cry so bad
not to mention dELETE yourself!!!
"b-but that was six months ago!! it's just that he looked so young a-and-"
"you've been trying to remedy that blunder for six months too, but he's not budging. yes, y/n, i've memorized it already."
:((
it feels unfixable at this point
hoseok told namjoon before that he doesn't have time for a fickle thing like love and it's been stamped on your mind ever since
good thing you don't love him!!!
hehe
ok wait
it might just be a little crush even if you decimated yourself in front of him
every morning when you come to work, you deliver coffee to the breakroom and it must be when hoseok's also there bc that's the whole point lol
you don't just buy one for him because that's TOO obvious
"morning, doc!!" is your go-to and you can't tell if it's also his
you get a :-] in exchange
you're always smiling and the other nurses are just in love with you
you always try to compliment dr. jung on something and you've honestly never really ran out of material
but at THIS rate???? where you've made approximately zero to none progress?? passing out is what you'll do
"he hates me, tae."
when namjoon doesn't listen (he always does but he just rarely reciprocates your energy), that's when your work husband comes in!!
he would hate it when you tell him he isn't your work husband though
taehyung's the receptionist you'd probably work through unvaccinated kids for
he matches your energy and he finds you the perfect work wife too because he's RESTLESS with just sitting behind a desk!! he needs someone to ramble to!!
"you're probably overthinking it. must be all that overcompensation," he's snacking on chips, hugging his cardigan but not before trying to wipe off the crumbs on your scrubs
"watch this," you tap his thigh hurriedly, clearing your throat before turning to hoseok who happens to be walking down the hall
"hey doc! new stethoscope? i love-"
he walks past you, ignoring you entirely
"yeah he does hate you!!"
taehyung sounds amused, letting out a hearty laugh considering how perfectly-aligned that went
he rubs circles on your back, still standing because you're too frustrated to even sit down
"just give it time."
"i gave it half a year!"
yikes
hmmm that does sound tragic
"maybe he just doesn't want to be your friend? if he's not affected by ignoring you, then you shouldn't be either."
wow
taehyung tends to be rEALLY honest
but he's like an endearing kind of honest
he spoke the thoughts from the back of your head, and hearing it from someone else just makes the gears in your head turn
is it really that ridiculous
"oh so like i stop smiling at him so he'd miss me?? like that???"
you... are hopeless
"no.... i wasn't proposing a plan,,, i was proposing a solution to make you not look like a fool."
you deflate at that, the entire plan being 2d making it boring for you
"oh,, i hate it then."
you physically shrug off your thoughts, nudging taehyung so he could scoot over and you'd have one buttcheek each on his chair
maybe you're just gonna try to ignore hoseok today
it's probably for the better
"anything new today?"
you check up on taehyung as usual, knowing that you'd get atleast one decent conversation today
"about twenty people asked me where the restroom is today, even if we just got huge boards hung to say where it is."
taehyung juts his bottom lip, turning his head to look at you when you're doing the exact same thing
"how 'bout you?"
oh wow you're sitting so close
taehyung's really pretty
that's your work husband right there!! :D
there's a harsh drop of a clipboard on the front desk, making the both of you jolt and knock your foreheads together
"y/l/n. rounds. no one else is available."
DR. JUNG??????
HOSEOK????
is he okay
he looks agitated
kinda looks like someone just stepped on his work sneakers intentionally over and over again
you're more perplexed with his expression rather than the fact that dr. jung IS talking to you
"doc...? i think namjoon's-"
hoseok only deadpans, tilting his head because it's yOU who's hesitating now
"am i asking for him or you?"
right
very right
you say goodbye to taehyung even if your break technically isn't over yet, picking up the clipboard wordlessly before following
it just goes like this
you narrating things to hoseok, him asking you, and nO conversation at all
you really didn't expect anything else
BUT THE THING IS
you weren't trying either!!!
you don't try to point out his new shoes or compliment his new stethoscope
what you didn't know is that hoseok's been sneaking glances at you the wHOLE entire time
he doesn't know what possessed him but seeing you sO close to taehyung when there's a whole other chair you could sit on!!!! wow!!!! he didn't know his blood pressure was capable of doing that
the last round's long been done but hoseok just can't stop looking at your clipboard, can he?
does he uh want you to give it back to him
you're looking quite intimidated
you can't stand it anymore so you just slightly bend your head over and look rIGHT up dr. jung, clearly taken in surprise when you did that
"your finger. it's bleeding."
it is??
oh right it is
you must've gotten it when you were flipping through pages in a hurry because of him, giving you questions you weren't entirely sure of
"oh!"
you forget that dr. jung is still there as you walk on autopilot to go to reception, knowing that tae has a whole canister of cute band-aids when-
"no. i'll take care of it."
dr. jung's wordlessly tugging at your forearm, not letting go even to the way towards one of the many empty beds, drawing the curtains closed
he makes you sit wordlessly, and the lacking buzz of a busy emergency room makes it even more intimate to say the least in such uh,, a confined space
you make hoseok confused
one moment he doesn't want to see you, but one moment he's ripping off horse band-aids to wrap around your finger
you're confusing him even if you hAVEN'T done anything confusing to him at all!!
"if something happens to you, you come to me — not to the receptionist you like chatting with on your lunch breaks."
huh
interesting
you resist the urge to smile, having to bite your tongue just so that you'd prevent yourself from getting into conclusions
"it's a paper cut, doc."
"a paper cut that could be infected."
uh no not entirely
this was supposed to be a nice wholesome moment!!! not tHIS!!
"it closes after like one lick and-"
right you shouldn't have said that
one look is all it takes to shut you up <3
the two of you are still in silence, internally scoffing when dr. jung busts out a glove for a goddamn paper cut to humor you
"you didn't give me my coffee today."
is that what this is about??
he says gloomily, looking genuinely upset that it makes you falter
"s-sorry. the café was closed."
"no it wasn't. it's open. i checked."
of course he did!!! he may have went downstairs to peek if you were just held up in line so that's why his customary coffee was taking long,, but you weren't even there in the first place
you're speechless honestly
for perhaps the first non-professional time that dr. jung talks to you, it straight-up has to be alluding your crush to him
hoseok takes your silence to heart though
"why aren't you talking now?"
rEALLY???
"because you hate me!!"
he thinks of what could be a reason to hate you for, something clicking in his head when he realizes what you've been holding on for the longest time
"i don't hate you for what you did half a year ago," he says casually, shaking his head over an honest mistake that you made, "i hate you because you never followed through with it."
"what's that supposed to mean??"
"sure — you get me coffee! but then what? did you ever ask me out?? did you ever call me baby again-"
now HE'S being ridiculous >:(
"i called you cutie-"
"IT'S THE SAME THING!!!"
okay
fine then
dr. jung's endearing, even more-so when you don't get to admire him from afar
you wordlessly stand from your seat on the bed, nudging the curtains to the side before exiting
o-oh my god
was that a low blow???
IS HE THE ASSHOLE HERE
yes most likely
dr. jung continues to surprise you when he sprints after you, hand on your forearm as he looks at you worriedly
"h-hey are you mad at me?"
????
cute
"huh? no, i was just gonna go and gloat to namjoon about this."
oh right makes sense
hoseok looks relieved, mouth parting to sheepishly smile and lets go of your arm
you leave this time, a smile you've been trying to suppress finally breaking out
"y/l/n!"
there's more than a few glances when he hollers your surname, an anticipating smile on his face
"coffee?"
Tom Holland - Lost kid
You seen those post where a couple goes shopping, the boy gets lost and the security guard calls the girl through the speaker because of her ‘misplaced kid’? Yeah, I did that, and I’m not sorry.
Plot: Tom and you spent your last weekend before going home in Disney World, and he turns out to be one of those boyfriends who end up in the ‘lost kids’ deparment.
This is pure crack humor.
“You’re so slow” you whined, lacing your hand with Tom’s and tugging once more.
The cotton candy in your hand was slowly but surely becoming smaller with the passing hours, and even if you felt like you were going to be sick with so much sugar, you couldn’t let go of the sweet treat. After all, not every day you had the whole day off and you could spend it with him. You savoured the sensation of the sugar-spun could melting on your tongue once more, and raised your other hand to fiddle with the Minnie mouse headband perched on the crown of your head.
You didn’t look back, too engrossed gazing at everything around you, but Tom could only see you.
He half regretted not getting another pair of ears, thinking it was too cliché and boring to dress up as a matching couple. But one thing was seeing them on the posters or on strangers, and another was seeing them adorably resting on your head. He still had the robin hood’s shirt and the Nemo’s key-ring on his keys, so he was happy enough.
You tugged again at his wrist and it almost made him drop everything he was carrying. He scoffed and reorganized everything on his arms.
“I can’t walk any faster, Y/N” he chuckled, still fastening the pace. “You’ve loaded me like a mule”
The CEO
Summary: Steve Rogers, CEO of Rogers Inc. is famous for being cold and calculated. Rarely did he smile, and when he did, only few saw. The exception, however, was when his girlfriend accompanied him to the annual company Christmas party.
A/N: I have no idea what makes me love the idea of Steve as a CEO, but someone’s gotta write this AU. Happy reading!
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader.
Everybody thought they knew Steve Rogers. They knew he didn’t smile very often, they knew he was good at making money, and they knew he was infamous for never settling for a girlfriend. That’s just the way he was, or so people thought.
He grew up in a strict household with a father who loved people, but never seemed to be able to pay bills on time. His mother was the one who had to scrape up enough money to put Steve through education as well as put a roof over their heads. Growing up, he observed that his father enjoyed talking to people in bars while getting tipsy, making new friends all over town, and chose the company of his friends over his family’s.
Steve didn’t think anything was wrong until he saw his mother crying from frustration one night in the kitchen when he was supposed to be upstairs, sleeping. He wanted a glass of water and saw the lights were turned on. He crept, slowly, until he saw his mother with her head in her hands and he could see her shoulder slumped. He listened as she wept and blew her nose. Steve walked up to his mother and offered her a hug, and he promised her he’d turn out nothing like his father.
He kept his promise. Although he launched his career at nineteen, became a millionaire by twenty-one, and was able to pay his bills, he lacked the happy-go-lucky characteristics his father had. Instead, Steve locked himself in his office while everyone went home. He didn’t have many friends outside of the work place and didn’t go with his employees to the local bar when it was happy hour.
But he found you while grabbing a cup of coffee in a new coffee house. He knew the faces of everyone who visited the small, mom and pop coffee house at six in the morning, but yours wasn’t a familiar face. There you were, patiently waiting for your order, when Steve saw you. His breath hitched and he swore time had stopped and you were the only thing he could see. He couldn’t help himself. Steve introduced himself to you and, although you knew who he was, you never mentioned it. You were surprised that someone the media made out to be harsh talked to your first. It didn’t take long until Steve asked you to be his girlfriend and you didn’t hesitate to say yes.
The company Christmas party was something every employee looked forward to. Not only was there a good selection of alcohol to choose from, but the hard work and long work days seemed to disappear. Everyone got along with each other. This was the first party you’d attend at Steve’s company since you met.
Steve apologised profusely when he wasn’t able to pick you up before the party started. Something from work came up and he explained that he had to handle it then and there, otherwise he’d have a big problem when he came back to work next week. You didn’t mind. You ran late as well, and let him know. Steve laughed when he read your text. It seems that the world didn’t want the both of you to enter together for some unknown reason.
Steve sat by the bar and ordered a drink. He thanked the bartender and tipped her well before turning his eyes to the sea of people. He scanned everyone to see some familiar faces: Tony Stark and James Barnes, two of the richest people in America, other than Steve. He made his way to the men and sipped his drink as he approached.
“Evening, boys,” he greeted.
“Nice party, Steve,” Tony replied. “I thought I knew how to throw one, but you’ve got this down to a science.”
“I’ve got a lot of talented minds under my wing, both inside and outside of the office.”
“Got anyone special you want to kiss under the mistletoe?” James teased, assuming Steve would grunt and spend this night alone. Before he could answer, Stephanie, one of the women working at the front desk approached him.
“Steve,” she purred. “Hi.” Steve knew that some of the girls in the workplace vied for his attention. He caught on to their attempts at flirting, but he had one girl on his mind: you.
“Hello, Stephanie,” Steve said, his face expressionless.
“Care to dance?” she asked.
“No thank you.” Steve turned his back and continued his conversation with James and Tony.
“Steve!” another girl yelled a few minutes later. He turned around and saw that the girl was followed by a few other women, who were all somewhat tipsy.
“Loosen up,” she said, stroking his arm with her hand. “You never seem to have any fun.”
“I do have fun,” he huffed. The girls pouted.
“Not with us!” one yelled over the music. Steve resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
“Please?” one pleaded.
“Yeah, will you dance with us?” pleaded another.
“Just dance with them,” said Tony. “I mean, you have these beautiful ladies in front of you. If you don’t dance with them, I will.” But just then, the elevator doors opened and you entered the room.
Steve’s eyes met yours. The corners of his mouth turned upwards when he spotted you not far away from where he was standing and looked at you. You wore a red dress with a gold belt around you and he thought you looked more radiant and more beautiful than any girl in the room. You smiled when you saw Steve and made your way towards him.
“Maybe you should,” Steve said as he handed his drink to James. James started to protest, but then he, Tony, and the girls wondered why he was smiling all of the sudden.
They watched as Steve embraced you with a loving hug before he picked you off of the ground. You squealed in delight and he set you back down on the floor, pressing a kiss onto your cheek. You linked your arm in his and he led you back to the group.
“Who’s this?” James asked, his eyebrow raised.
“This is Y/N, my girlfriend.” His smile grew as the word ‘girlfriend’ left his mouth.
“Girlfriend? My, my, Steve Rogers. It looks like someone broke the big bad wolf.” You laughed and stuck your hand out to James, then Tony. You turned to the girls who were gaping at you and offered your hand, but they scoffed and walked away.
“I’m sorry?” you said, confused as you watched them leave.
“Don’t mind them,” Tony said. “They’re just jealous because Steve didn’t want to dance with them. Looks like he was waiting for you.” You turned to Steve and grinned.
“What a sweetheart,” you said.
“Aren’t you just the cutest thing?” he asked, kissing your nose.
“Okay, okay,” James said, pretending to gag. “You lovebirds go and dance out of my sight. I’ve had enough for one night.” Steve laughed and James’ joke and he led you to the dance floor. He asked the DJ to play a slow song and Steve wrapped his arms around you and pulled you closer to his body.
“This is nice,” you said as he soothingly swayed you back and forth.
“Mm, I agree. I couldn’t ask for anything better than my girl in my arms where all the girls can see,” he said. You smiled.
“For someone who said he didn’t like affection, you sure are affectionate.”
“Maybe it’s just with you,” he teased.
You noticed the girls that were around Steve when you came into the party were glaring at you as they danced with their partners. Steve seemed to notice them too and used his finger to move your head so that you stood face to face.
“You’re the only girl I need,” he said. “Those other girls can compete of my attention all they want, but I only have eyes for you.” You were about to speak, but Steve leaned in and you closed your eyes. His lips touched yours ever so softly and it felt like the clouds were touching your lips. His arms held you tightly against him and your arms found their way around his neck. Steve wanted this moment to last forever and grinned when you both needed to pull away for a breather.
“You’re such a good kisser,” you said with your eyes still closed. Steve laughed and pressed another short, but sweet kiss to your lips.
“I can never get enough of those.”
As you come back to consciousness, your eyes flutter open, only to shut them close at the blinding hospital light pointed directly at your line of vision. The pristine white walls illuminating the ambience of the sickly familiar room only gave you a dizzy spell.
Still dazed with the remnants of being unconscious, you couldn’t seem to find the last bit of your memory and why you’re lying in a bed inside a familiar facility instead of being the one to check the patients up, yourself. With your eyes closed, you heard a familiar voice spoke, breaking the oddly cold silence, “You okay?” “Why am I here?” You manage to ask with your desert dry throat and a pounding head.
"hey." jungkook says, sitting next to you with a smile.
"hi." you respond, politely smiling back.
the two of you shyly sat next to one another in a photography studio, waiting for the photographer to finish setting up his equipment. your school principal, meanwhile, stood behind the scenes, watching you two carefully with a small smile on her face.
"ah, such a beautiful pair! the beauty and brains of the school and the star of the basketball team. the school would be happy to have you two represent us on the posters." she says proudly, making the two of you chuckle sheepishly.
the posters, or photos, she was referring to, were set to be published all over the media with the goal of promoting your high school. once the plan had been formulated, the principal specifically chose you both to participate, feeling as though you two would be best for the job.
"I'll be right back." she says as her phone rings, giving the two of you a smile before walking out.
a few moments after, jungkook clears his throat and glances towards you, fumbling with the basketball in his hand.
"we're in the same physics class, right?" he asks, making you chuckle and nod.
"yeah. to be frank with you, the promised physics incentives were one of the only reasons I agreed to this in the first place." you say sheepishly, jungkook laughing softly.
"no worries, it's the same with me. i just can't understand mr. choi's lectures for the life of me." he responds, letting out a sigh.
"me neither." you respond, a small pout forming on your face.
jungkook chuckles at this and glances towards you.
"glad to know we're both on the same boat, then. hopefully it'll make this entire thing easier." jungkook says, smiling at you.
you smile back and nod.
suddenly, the photographer in front of you both claps his hands, causing the two of you to look towards him.
"alright, i think we're ready to start." he says, giving you both a nod.
...
"that looks perfect! jungkook-ah, can you look towards (y/n) and smile?" the photographer says, jungkook nodding.
he glances towards you, the two of you trying not to appear embarrassed as he lets out a smile and gazes at you. at this, you let out a small amused laugh.
"yes, (y/n)! keep that up!" the photographer says, making you and jungkook laugh as you both maintain eye contact.
finally, after a few more takes, the photographer finally puts his camera down and looks at you both with a grin.
"i think we got some good shots. give me a sec to show them to ms. kim." he says, referring to the principal.
you both nod and wait in your seats, watching as the photographer and the principal browse through the pictures on the monitor. as you wait, goosebumps begin to form on your skin when you feel the sudden chilliness of the room.
the air condition had been turned up about an hour ago, but because of the flashes of the camera and the whole photoshoot in general, you hadn't noticed how cold it had gotten until now.
"you alright?" jungkook asks, causing you to glance towards him.
you give him a sheepish smile and nod.
"yeah, just a bit cold." you respond, jungkook nodding and smiling back.
"here, why don't you put this on? i think we're pretty much done with the shoot anyways." jungkook suggests, taking off his varsity jacket.
your eyes widen at this and you quickly shake your head.
"oh! that's alright. besides, i don't want you getting cold." you say, jungkook shaking his head.
"i don't feel cold at all, it's really okay." he says, giving you a reassuring smile as he places the jacket on your lap.
"o-okay then, if you insist." you mumble shyly, putting on the jacket.
once you wear it, you quickly flush as you begin to inhale jungkook's familiar cologne, not very used to wearing clothes that weren't yours. meanwhile, jungkook lets out a chuckle upon seeing how large his jacket looked on you, amusement evident in his expression as he sees how far the sleeves go past your arms.
"here, let me help." he says, scooting closer to you.
he slowly rolls up the sleeves, eyes trained onto your rather petite hands. you slowly blush as you realize the proximity between you two. jungkook seems to realize this as well as he glances up to you, quickly pulling away and clearing his throat.
"there, much better." he says, referring to the sleeves as his ears turn pink.
"thank you." you respond shyly, giving him a smile.
jungkook smiles back and nods, letting out a soft laugh.
"no problem. if i'm being honest, you actually look better in it than me." jungkook says teasingly, causing you to chuckle.
"i highly doubt that, jungkook-ah." you respond, a small smile on your face.
jungkook simply smiles back at you, not trusting himself to talk as his heart slightly speeds up upon hearing you say his name.
...
"miss (y/n), glad to see that you're finally joining us." mr. choi says as you walk in.
you smile sheepishly and bow towards him, tightly grasping the straps of the backpack you had on your shoulders.
after the photoshoot, you and jungkook were free to go back to your classes which coincidentally, happened to be physics. but unfortunately for you, the principal made you stay as she needed some assistance coming up with a description for the photos.
"sorry, mr. choi. here's my excuse slip." you say with a smile, passing him a yellow piece of paper.
mr. choi puts on his glasses as he accepts it, reading the paper carefully before nodding. he takes off his glasses and motions towards the seats in front of him.
"alright, this is noted. please take your seat." mr. choi says, putting the slip in his binder.
you bow again and nod, walking towards the back row to get to your seat. once you find it, you let out a sigh in relief and sit down, smiling at your friend, chaeyoung, who was seated next to you.
"hey, i guess it went well?" she asks teasingly, causing you to tilt your head to the side.
"what went well?" you ask her confusedly as you hang your backpack onto the chair you were sitting in.
"the photoshoot with jeon." she says, causing your mouth to form an 'o' as you realize what she was talking about.
"ah, it was alright." you say, chaeyoung sneering.
"please, you wouldn't be wearing his jacket if it was just alright." she teases, making your cheeks turn pink.
"oh." you mumble, remembering he lent it to you.
as you shyly deflect your chaeyoung's soft teasing, you don't notice jungkook sitting a row away from you, biting back the amused smile on his face.
"cute." he mumbles under his breath, chuckling and shaking his head.
