18 - A reaper

image

Sometimes, he was grateful for the solitude of his duties.

The curse had been laid on him years ago to save his life (thought not without it’s costs), and he’d learned from experience to take on his responsibilities without the aid of another. It was never easy to take the soul of those whose lives had come to an end, and the pained faces of those not ready to leave and those who watched him work couldn’t be erased from his memories.

Lewis and Vivi had tried to assist him, at least by being there for moral support, but he couldn’t subject them to that anymore; to watching someone die. He knew it affected Lewis the worst, seeing someone pass on; after his own death, he could understand being squeamish. And many times, the ones he had to guide to the afterlife had not died kind deaths. After only a few, he’d chosen to perform his work without their assistance. They were happier, and he was content to see them as such.

It had been a tedious night, lasting long into the dawn. There had been a fire in an apartment complex, and he came home smelling like ash and cinders, face drawn and pale as was natural for him now. Several hadn’t escaped the flames, and his work had been cut out for him.

He rubbed at the circles beneath his eyes before releasing the shepherd’s crook that was his reaping tool of choice, preferring the gentle light and guidance to the violent threatening of the scythe.

When released, the staff let out a jingle like a wind-chime, and vanished in a plume of darkness like that which clung to his person. The cloak was removed and hung over the back of his chair, before Arthur seated himself at the table with a can of iced tea from the fridge. He didn’t need it now, the curse leaving him like Lewis in a unliving state, but sometimes allowing himself the smaller pleasures made everything a little more bearable. The hiss was loud in the silent room as he popped the top, and took a long sip with a hum.

When are you going to finish you underswap comic?

That comic's not going to continue, I thought I had expressed this. I'm sorry if it was something a lot of folks liked, but due to bad scripting and lack of motivation it won't be continuing. Sorry to disappoint. ^^"

Phone Calls At 1:30 Are Never Really A Good Sign Arthur Should Have Known That.

Phone calls at 1:30 are never really a good sign Arthur should have known that.

Hopefully, this isn’t too badly written. It’s just a small Idea that was just meant to get me into the swing of writing. I’m looking forward to writing more.

Also, shout out to my brother for proofreading and choosing the concept of the book cover.

Arthur felt his head swimming. He felt his whole body shuddering as the heat of another pressed up against him. Someone kissed him. Arthur could taste alcohol. Pulling back he met Vivi’s intense blue eyes half lidded. Arthur tensed.

How was this happening? How could he-

The blonde’s thoughts were halted by the feeling of feminine hands sliding up his torso. Vivi’s eyes looked hazy… He had to stop this. The hands started down. This was wrong.

“W-wait! V-Vivi!” ____________________ A bit of background

Arthur sat alone in his uncle’s repair shop, alone and surrounded by the remains of a failed project. Well perhaps failed was incorrect, it’s more so a project in the works. Though it was giving him enough trouble it would have probably been much smarter to quit and start over, and you know, get what little sleep you can.

You know. Cause it’s so easy to sleep. When his dreams are invaded by the images of him pushing his best friend off a cliff’s edge. While staying with his other best friend, who just so happens to be his late friend’s girlfri-

*Vrrrrr! Vrrrrrrr!*

Arthur was ripped from his thoughts by his phone, at first, he thought it had been his alarm to tell him he was supposed to be in bed like an hour or so ago, but no. It was a phone call, more importantly, it was Vivi. Rubbing his eyes Arthur was ready to fake a smile and reassuring tone. When a voice spoke first.

“Hello? Um, is this Arthur?”

The voice was unfamiliar. It sounded like they were trying to talk over the noise in the background. Arthur shakily answered,

“Y-yes, this is Arthur. W-why do you have Vivi’s phone? ” Arthur tried to ignore the sweat on the palm of his remaining hand. The voice quickly answered,

“ Oh! Well, Vivi is a little drunk - well a lot actually. I asked her if there was anyone who could drive her home, so she said I should call you since she was pretty sure you’d still be awake.” There was a pause as the music got particularly loud.

“We’re at a crazy big house party and my car is full. I’m sorry if this is a bother.”

Oh, was That all. Saying that Arthur was shocked would have been an understatement. Vivi didn’t normally drink, none of them did- no wait neither of them really did.

“O-okay so do you have any idea how I can get to you…. A-also who is this?”, Arthur asked, feet shuffling into his shoes and almost already out the door.

“You work at Kingsmen’s right? If you go down the road and take a right. Then keep going till you see the house with a load of cars in its driveway.” The caller fumbled with the phone for second before then saying “ Also my name’s Polly…”

That name didn’t sound like anyone Arthur knew. Must have been someone just rounding up the people who didn’t have rides.

It didn’t take long for the mechanic to find the house. The long part was dragging a passed out Vivi to the van. Luckily for Arthur, that that Polly chick had been willing to help. Regardless it was still Pretty tricky, but finally, they got her into the van. Polly gave him Vivi’s phone and wished him luck getting the bluenette home.

The ride to Vivi’s apartment went pretty smoothly considering Vivi woke up just to sit there and figure out where she was. When she seemed to realized Arthur had picked her up and she relaxed again.

Though Arthur felt the tension in his shoulders start to really strain his back. His mind traveled trying to figure out what Vivi had been doing.

Stopping the van at Vivi’s apartment complex. Arthur realized Vivi probably wasn’t in the best condition to get to her apartment alone. So with his shoulder bracing her weight, they wobbled their way to Vivi’s apartment door.

When they first entered the door, Mystery seemed to have as many questions as Arthur had. It took a bit of reassuring to get Mystery to stay outside the bedroom. So Arthur could get her into bed. And that’s how this happened. ______________ Vivi appeared to have only now regained her thoughts as she slowly looked down at her hands on the tense blonde, who she called her friend.

Her face formed into horrified shock.

“Oh my God. Arthur I-”

The girl’s hands shot from their places as if she was handling broken porcelain. Arthur hated the small part of him that missed feeling them.

Vivi’s eyes looked from her hands to Arther’s arm and then trailed to his face.

She looked…. ashamed.

“ A-Artie! I’m so sorry for that! I-I was taking it too far I-”

Vivi’s hands covered her mouth

Arthur couldn’t bear hearing her like that like she did something wrong.

He should have just stopped her sooner. He shouldn’t have kissed her back. Vivi had been Lewis’s girlfriend for God’s sake! She might not remember him but that didn’t change the fact that they had loved each other. How could he-!

“ Vivi. It’s fine… you’ve just had a lot to drink. The alcohol was clouding your judgment….”, Arthur said, surprised that the calm voice was his own. He immediately followed it with a shaky,“ Y-you probably feel pretty gross. Sweating out all that alcohol and all. You should try taking a shower and getting to bed…”

Vivi’s figure seemed to have calmed down, just as quickly as Vivi normally recovered from things.

“Yeah… You’re probably right…”, She chuckled good natured with a strange hint of disappointment.

Arthur stiffly nodded, that’s all he trust himself with doing.

Vivi looked to the bathroom that was attached to her bedroom. Slowly but surely she stood up and wobbled towards the door

Arthur waited till he heard the shower turn on before he left the room.

The mechanic wasn’t thinking about leaving. No. He knew Vivi well enough that She’d be frustrated with him if he up and left.

Arthur knew he’d end up crashing on the paranormal investigator’s couch. Such are the ways of Vivi.

Arthur let out a long, nearly pained, sigh as he slid down the length of the door.

He ran both his real and robotic fingers through his blonde messy hair.

Well, that was a thing that happened…

“ Arthur… What happened?”, a voice questioned nearly scaring Arthur out of his skin. He quickly looked up and spotted a pair of red ember-like, eyes. Which were backing up a little giving Arthur space.

Mystery was far too quiet for his own good. The canine barely had to try if he wanted to catch you off guard, or maybe that was just Arthur.

“Vivi…..I mean she was at a party. She got pretty hammered - I don’t know why maybe she was celebrating…. Or something. ” He trailed off, losing his thoughts as they crashed into another. “W-we kissed!”, Arthur’s palms scrubbed at his eyes feeling his breaths pick up speed.

Mystery stepped forward to nudge Arthur’s elbow with his nose.

“Arthur… you’re okay. Just breath… What happened after?”

Mystery sounded so calm. The dog’s eyes glowed steadily. Not accusing, but curious.

Questions needed answers.

Arthur breathed before answering, “ I stopped it, a bit too late in my opinion, but still. Vivi was really worried looking about it, but she’ll be fine. I hope.”

“I should’ve done more.”

Mystery seemed to make a face through the darkness, though Arthur couldn’t see it, but he could feel it.

“Honestly Arthur, I fail to see that. You stopped it because you knew what was right. And as far as my view goes, I think Vivi’s going to be more worried about her choices tonight more than anyone…”, Mystery said with a somewhat worried tone.

“Y-ya really think so?” Arthur asked hushed and tired. He felt more worried than relieved by that.

Arthur pulled himself up and made his way slowly to the couch.

“I’ve known Vivi a very long time, I’m pretty sure I’ve got some idea.” Mystery yawned as he walked in circles before lying down.

They sat there in a comfortable silence. Arthur laid his head back staring at the ceiling waiting for sleep to take over. Everything would be better in the morning. Vivi would be more coherent, he wouldn’t be lacking on so much sleep and they could all talk about how things happened.

Arthur mostly hoped that he would have a dreamless night.

One Step Back: Stepping Back

Written by @providentially-demonic

// AHHH this is really really good! If anyone was curious about the verse called One Step Back, this is the origin of that! We came up with a lot of it together, and while she’d disagree and say it was both of ours, she did like 89% of the writing so full credit goes to her for this. Thank you!

))))))))))((((((((((

Arthur turned the van off and hopped out before Vivi could corral him into carrying in the cursed painting they’d been hired to deal with. Even though she had sealed it, the damned thing still gave him the creeps. And he was tired, so very tired, of being the target of every supernatural thing in the area.

He deliberately didn’t look back at Lewis. He didn’t want to see the glare the ghost would likely be sending his way.

Vivi had tried to get him to stop when he’d tried to hurry inside, and he flinched away, his chin dropping to his chest. The saddened gaze the action was met with filled him with something cold, his insides turning hollow. He had belted out a short apology before walking, practically running, away. He didn’t want to hear Lewis snapping at him for talking to her like he had. He didn’t want to see her pity and determination. She wanted to further fix what they had salvaged.

He wasn’t sure they could.

Just thought I'd say your art is ridiculously adorable and I've been not feeling motivated to write or sketch much for a while, but seeing your stuff always gives me inspiration. So thank you so much for being awesome 💛

(I took ridiculously long to answer this) I'm still gasping over this. It's crazy how happy I get from someone saying that my work inspires them. It makes me wish I posted more often than what I do. AnywaysThank you! ^^
