KYLE CROUSE: Here's a question from Blue Dragon! "How would Shadow react if Maria was resurrected? How would the cast interact with her and would Shadow change with her being there?"

IAN FLYNN: Uh, it would definitely be shock initially. A degree of disbelief and probably distrust, because... he's probably of the mentality that he can't have nice things. So, how is she back? Is she a robot? Is she a clone? Is she a hallucination? Is she a phantom... thing? Is this a trick? Everybody else only kind of knows of her tangentially, so I think they'd be more accepting once they realize, y'know, what a big deal her return would be. And once Shadow got over himself and acknowledged that she's here and she's back -- assuming, y'know, assuming that she's just here and she's back now -- I think too much time has passed. He can't go back to who he was when they first met up on he ARK, but he might loosen up a little bit. Oh, now Maria has a kind of twenty-four-seven guardian angel just on the fringe. KYLE: [chuckles] Nice.

Scourge’s experiences with the heroic/good side of things, is why a major part of him believes being worse as a person (or his words “different from Sonic” ) down the line would be better in the long run.

Anti Jules, an important but weaselly politician for the Great Peace, is heavily implied in neglecting his own son in favor for this line of work.

Meeting his heroic counterpart for the first time, where in his eyes, threw him to the wolves [Kintobor], when they were supposed to just be racing for fun.

Labeled as the cheap evil knockoff of his counterpart, and getting a confirmation after meeting Sonic Prime, stirred some bitterness and lowered his self-esteem deep down likely.

In his own way, would try to be lenient with his team as Anti Sonic. Didn’t even try to strike back every time Anti Antoine tried to kill him. Still, the gang would often plan to betray or ditch him for not wanting to cause chaos all the time. Got their utmost “respect” and obedience when he did strike back as Scourge.

Tried to be a hero once. But even if the effort in getting rid of Sonic entirely was successful, the coward in him would’ve prevailed the more he fought against Eggman the way Sonic does. Death must terrify him.

“You could be a hero!”

“And what does heroism get you?”

Probably realized down the line upholding the heroic image would be a hassle if he did things Sonic’s way, while back in his own planet, it was a one and done deal by being the conqueror of his own planet.

Everyone including Kintobor that likely had good intentions in his planet were shot down in seconds by him, proving his “point.”

Father and Son confrontation. Jules, despite being an opposite of his father, still reminded him of Anti-Jules in the end. (He was in deep denial mode, sure, considering everything Jules said about him was true but I think it was important to address.)

Prison, was constantly beaten down. This was apparently in the name of reformation. The guards didn’t care to help him when he was obviously suffering. Even Fiona’s good intentions could’ve got him killed if she and her group weren’t formidable enough. Sonic and Zonic were the ones who threw him here too.

[Bonus: the apparent succession according to Flynn would’ve have him result as Sonic Prime but with a lot of baggage behind it.]

Sobs. Flynn wanted him to get worse, so there very clearly a pattern just getting set up as part of the reason on why Scourge didn’t want to be a good person.

// I see people argue and wonder on why Scourge insists on being the way he is, and yeah uh huh, I like the idea of him reforming but loooook at his support system! 😭 Also I just want to ramble about this green lil dude once again.

God bless your little rants, I enjoy hearing people’s opinions.

I agree with ALL OF THIS!! Thinking about Scourge makes me so ill. (Forgive me if something isn’t accurate I haven’t read the archie comics in months)

Anti-Jules had always neglected Scourge to focus on maintaining peace on Moebius. I believe THIS could be the sole reason why he went down this path.

Jules turns his attention to the public, and people who threaten to disrupt the peace. Best way to get his attention? Start causing trouble and FORCE him to pay attention, this is what I believe led him to hang out with the suppression squad.

Maybe, he could’ve been just another Sonic. Yet, bitterness from his father’s neglect sent him down to a path he couldn’t turn back from. Maybe being with the suppression squad gave him a sort of comfort he didn’t find at home, leading him to stick with them even though they couldn’t give two shits about him.

Also, possibly finding about other Zones made him question ALOT of things. I feel like he observed Sonic’s zone, and the blue blur himself, and envied the close connections that seemed to come too easily with his counterpart.

Maybe being labelled as “Anti/Evil-Sonic” was the last straw for him. That’s what made him go from a little trickster/“thug” to somebody who conquered his world and killed his father.

Oh my god. I could talk about prison Scourge for AGES! First of all, the rehabilitation techniques were very much immoral.

Zobotnik didn’t want to rehabilitate Scourge in my eyes, he saw a powerful force and wanted to use that for his own benefit. Yet, that force hates him, so best thing to do is break down his spirit and mold him into a force for good (LITERALLY HIS WORDS)

It makes me so sick

Everything Scourge went through was to break his spirit and by god it was slowly chipping away. He slept on SPRINGS. He was shoved into a WASHING MACHINE. He had WAY less portions of food compared to everyone else AND I don’t think he ate it most of the time because of Smalls. He had his quills trimmed, which I researched to find that you should NOT do this to hedgehogs as it weakens their defense and may cause infections.

Look, if Archie came over to me and said that Scourge would’ve went to electro-shock therapy to tone down his violent tendencies I wouldn’t be surprised.

And the fact you’re telling me that if this WORKED, he would’ve just become like any other Sonic? It makes it sadder.

Here's how to spot a Mad Scientist:

Is very smart in a specific field

Probably hasn't slept in the past 4 days

Depressed

Slowly decends into madness/gets obsessed over something to the point where they destroy their lives over it/makes causing general chaos and destruction into their life goal

Here are other minor signs you might want to look out for (doesn't apply to all Mad Scientist):

Very pathetic. A loser, if you will

Is gay

Wears glasses

Has a best friend who is extremely friendly and also a poet

Graying hair despite their relatively youthful appearance

Can be a little bit silly (as a treat)

Note that not all Mad Scientists are actual scientists. The Mad Scientist can be disguised as something else and may try to trick you; do not be fooled. Look for these traits to identify a real wild Mad Scientist.

Now you are ready to go out into the wild and find your very own Mad Scientists to hyperfixate on for the next month! Hope this helped❤️

Reminder of a Starline themed BumbleKast Q&A where Ian Flynn as Starline talks about what he would have done with Sonic and Tails bodies after the events of Issue 50: [ Tw! Child Death + Taxidermy ]

Starline is such a genuinely terrifying character (who I miss everyday ahh) and his disregard for children and his willingness to mentally and physically manipulate them for his own evil purposes (especially in the context of this answer) is genuinely chilling. It’s something I think even Eggman would be semi disturbed by which is saying a lot.

The idea of him using Sonic and Tails preserved bodies as trophies and as an example to others is so insanely horrifying, and the “well then I’ll just have to start a gallery won’t I!” in response to the idea of other hero’s trying to rise up against him somehow finds a way to make it extra disturbing. The mental image of Amy, Knuckles and all their other friends seeing what Starline has done to the brothers… to their family 💔

The thought of Surge and Kit having a constant physical reminder of what they’ve done… that while Sonic and Tails may be out the way, the two unwilling doppelgangers will forever be in their shadow, unable to truly fill the roles they were forced into and the bond the brothers had. Them getting everything they thought they wanted, yet still feeling empty inside.

Long story short: Ian Flynn did not need to go this crazy with this answer but gosh am I glad he did.

Kacchan becomes rather quiet for a long while after that.

He still uses his quirk, but as far as speaking, he kind of goes a bit mute.

What were the last things he was going to say to Deku? He wasn’t sure, but he knew they weren’t kind. What was the last thing he said to him, anyway?

Of course, he knew what Deku’s last words were.

“Kacchan!”

In a panicked tone, a little breathless from running up to him so suddenly and shoving him.

Right before a near deafening thud and the feeling of something wet on his cheek.

It just…

It really happened so fast.

And it all ended with Deku saving his life.

Usually, he’d be angry. He’d throw a tantrum over the uppity idiot thinking he needed saving.

But that could’ve been him.

That could’ve been him.

That should’ve been him.

A splatter on the concrete. A little arm, separated from the rest of his flattened body.

They had to scrape him off the walls and ground.

Deku saved him. Deku died saving him.

And where he’d usually be angry, he was only empty.

Because if “useless” Deku could save his life and die, how much more useless was he, someone with a quirk, that someone quirkless had to die for him?

…Katsuki doesn’t talk about heroes for a long while after that.

“Bakugou-san, your quirk is amazing!”

“Bakugou, you made it to the top of the class again. You’re very smart!”

“Bakugou-kun, you’re a very good student with a strong quirk. Have you ever been interested in being a hero?”

People tell him these things often, now that he thinks about it.

But every time they mention these things, he imagines himself below the debris that should’ve fallen on him.

“Your quirk is amazing!”

It wouldn’t have saved me.

“You’re very smart!”

But too stupid to avoid getting someone killed.

“–Interested in being a hero?”

…He made a great one, in the end.

Perhaps it wasn’t healthy, being so preoccupied by thoughts of someone who could never come back. Someone that Katsuki himself basically killed. He wasn’t strong or smart enough when it counted most, and Deku picked up the slack when no one asked him to.

…Now that he thought about it, Deku didn’t have a quirk, but other than that, there wasn’t anything to excessively bad about him. In fact, he saved him even without one. So what exactly was so bad about Deku?

What had been bad about him?

…A lot of things.

He was nosy. He was a creep. He didn’t know better when it counted. He couldn’t leave people alone. He always tried to be a hero, practically obsessed with it when people kept saying he couldn’t be one.

Deku proved them all wrong.

Deku proved him wrong.

Maybe…if he hadn’t tried so hard, things could’ve turned out differently.

Katsuki knew he was part of the reason Deku tried so hard. After Deku turned out quirkless, Katsuki was among the first people to tell him he couldn’t be a hero. So he kept trying, over and over again.

…Well, he proved him wrong.

But Katsuki, when his spiraling thoughts went especially far, wasn’t sure he was quite worth saving.
