Hear me out. Hob has dysautonomia. Always has done.

In 1389 and 1489, Dream never sees him stand up. In 1589, Hob staggers on his feet as he greets Dream - who assumes that he's drunk.

In 1689 Hob is malnourished and Dream isn't surprised to see him tremble and turn faint. In 1789, he's just been fighting - of course he's dizzy and his heart is pounding.

In 1889 Dream doesn't bother to turn around so he never sees the way Hob clutches the doorway or slides to the floor in the rain.

In 2022, half way through their catch-up, Hob casually grabs the salt shaker and pours some of the contents into his hand. Between sentences he licks the salt off his palm like a cat. When Dream glances curiously at his hand, he smiles.

"It helps, when I'm going to get dizzy. I've got sodium tablets upstairs, but this is just as good." He sticks one of his legs out from under the table and pulls up his trousers a few inches, revealing his black compression socks. "These are good too. Better than stockings, anyway!"

And Dream... is too embarrassed to ask. Hob seems to think that he already knows. And a peek into his dreams reveals everything. Once again he finds himself asking - what sensible creature would crave an eternity of this?

"Gotta stick around for the cure, innit?" Hob grins. "I'll be at the front of the queue when they come up with it. There's a million things I want to do. And in the meantime, I'm going to be disabled and happy and an absolute bastard about it."

And suddenly Dream is the one having heart palpations. Not Hob.
