Recently I’ve noticed a lot of people still excusing Entrapta and her actions by treating her like a child who doesn’t comprehend what she is doing, and as someone who is autistic and see’s autistic traits in Entrapta, this is deeply concerning.
I think a lot of this treatment in the fandom regarding Entrapta stems from both purity culture and the general bad take on autistic characters.
People now a days feel like they have to invent reasons why they like a villainous character, and this can create a lot of forced analysis, grasping at straws, and excuses. It’s okay to just like an evil character, you can love a good villain without excusing their actions.
Now I don’t think Entrapta is evil in any way, but she isn’t exactly good either guys. In this case lot of the fandom seems to really push that Entrapta is innocent and is just naive or is just being manipulated- to justify why they like her.
They make up excuses that she ‘doesn’t know what she’s doing’ that ‘she’s being manipulated’ that she is ‘naive’, etc because they feel if they admit she knows what she’s doing to a certain point they have to hold her accountable and are no longer allowed like and support her, so it’s easier to infantilize her and place the blame on Catra and the horde, but by doing so they hurt Entrapta and the asd audience that feels represented by her.
The thing with Entrapta is she’s an adult, and she knows what’s she’s doing and that it is hurting Etheria. She isn’t naive, she just has vastly different priorities than the rest of the cast, she means no ill will by any means, but the end justifies the means in this case, and to her that’s science and figuring out the world. But it doesn’t excuse her actions and the consequences it has on Etheria, she isn’t evil, she also isn’t innocent either.
Yes, Catra kind of manipulated her at first and it was a mistake and a misunderstanding that left her stranded in the fright zone, but she stayed with the horde out of scientific curiosity and because the horde helps her complete the goals she has more than the rebellion could have, her priorities are better suited for the horde, her choosing the horde was more out of self interest than it was out of revenge or hurt.
Is the horde taking full advantage of her and her experiments to hurt Etheria? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean Entrapta is entirely blameless either.
As she says in the episode white out, when Bow confronted her and said she has to stop, that she “Doesn’t understand the forces she’s messing with.” Entrapta, without hesitation, responds, “I know, that’s the fun of it!”
While Entrapta is by no means out to hurt Etheria, hell in season 3 she wants to stop the portal from completely destroying Etheria- she still doesn’t seem to mind the fact her actions and experiments hurt Etheria and the rebellion over all, while she didn’t want the malfunctioning portal to destroy the dimension, she had no objections to still working on the portal knowing Hordak intended to use it to bring his armies there.
Entrapta is the embodiment of chaotic neutral, her passion is science, and she has her own priorities that are vastly different than any other character in this show, it’s not about good or evil or the betterment or the ending of Etheria for her, it’s about gaining more knowledge and understanding of Etheria at it’s core to almost any consequence.
I love Entrapta, along with Catra she’s my favorite, and I still want her to choose friendships and people and Etheria, but I can’t say I’m comfortable with people excusing her actions because she was tricked or because she doesn’t understand. You can still enjoy her as a chaotic neutral character without trying to make excuses for her (especially ones that kind of demean and infantilize her).
In the end I think this… interpretation of Entrapta as naive and innocent, is like I said, a mix of people feeling like they have to make up excuses for her actions to be allowed to like her and support her without being judged by the more “purity” parts of the fandom, and also just a subconscious ableist mindset that asd characters are more child like, and naive, and must be protected, and while you probably think your helping by not holding Entrapta accountable for her actions, that by excusing her you aren’t demonizing an autistic coded character, you are actually just fulfilling a harmful stereotype. Autistic characters like real life autistic people do not need to be coddled, do not to be excused for their actions, our disorder is not an excuse to be a bad person or to hurt others.
It’s okay to like villains, its okay to like morally grey characters, its okay to like anti heroes, just do not excuse their actions, especially because of reasons that harm people with those same disorders the character has. As someone who is autistic, and someone who loves and adores Entrapta, it’s deeply uncomfortable and at times offensive to see people defend Entrapta with statements that make her out to be childish, naive, foolish, etc.
You don’t have to make up excuses to defend or or excuses on why you like her, especially excuses that push a very harmful stereotype. You can just… like her as a character.
