For me, it’s always been the endings of A Series of Unfortunate Events books. When I was a kid, I couldn’t get my hands on all the books. I had to go to the library, and check them out. And sometimes, I would have really long hiatuses. And all I think about is the end of the book, and what’s going to come next. For me, especially, it’s the Reptile Room. Finding out that uncle Monty dies…. Every single time, it kills me. No matter how many times I go back, and I reread the books, or every time I go back and rewatch the movie, and I see that moment…. It always fills me with sadness and anger towards Count Olaf. Please don’t spoil The Hostile Hospital through The End, because I’m still reading those. In fact, I think I might just stop reading the hostile hospital, restart the entire series, and then catch up.

But yeah, that’s my moment. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

Do you know what is the sign of a great scene? When you can read it over and over again and no matter if you KNOW what is going to happen, what is following up and how everything ends? You are still gripped by the same feelings you had the first time you read it and everything was uncertain.

For me, I have been a lucky reader. There are a ton of those scenes I can think off. But right now? The one that made me think of it is the one I JUST re-read for, what I think is the 20th time now.

Mr. Jingles' death in The Green Mile.

Now, if you haven't seen or read The Green Mile, why are you here and not looking for it in a streaming service? Seriously, it's one of the great stories of Stephen King that is not fully horror and the movie is one of the best adaptations. And now, I spoil a lot:

Because see, first of all, Mr. Jingles is a MOUSE. Not a person, a mouse. And not only that, he is the morality pet of a rapist arsonist (The fact that the book/movie manage to make said rapist arsonist a woobie is a different case altogether and I will talk about that in my video). And the book has a lot of deaths, including a couple of adorable twin girls, but NONE impacted me as much as the moment when the evil guard steps on that poor little mouse at the end of part 3.

And as I read it again right now? I am honestly crying, five minutes after I closed the book for 24 hours before I go back to part 4.

And there's the second thing. As I said, I've read this book a thousand times. However, this is the FIRST time since it was published that I am reading it the way it was intended to be read again. That is, waiting between parts. Originally it was a month wait between parts and let me tell you, that month between John Coffey's hands and The Bad Death of Edward Delacroix? WAS TORTURE the first time as I could only think about poor Mr. Jingles. Now... I know Mr. Jingles will be ok. He will come back. But still, I am crying because it was written so well, and I have to wait 24 hours to see him come back and that... THAT is great writing.

What are your similar scenes in other books? I am dying to know.

(Also, send cute pics of mice. I need cute pics of mice right now)

Yes he does. And little mice. He’ll stomp on them just a piss off that little Cajun man.

Percy Wetmore hates French fried faggots called Eduard Delacroix

Please elaborate, because I’m curious now.

Unfortunately there are at least three prison guards I’d kiss from The Green Mile.

Yep- Pretty much, Brutal going all in, showing Percy WHY he’s called Brutal.

Well, considering the fact that he knew what Wild Bill did- Yeah.

This is the joke part of this comment, but if he wanted him to choke, he would’ve given him some of that cornbread, cause that shit looks dry as fuck-

John Coffey: *gives Del and Mr. Jingles some of his cornbread*

Wild Bill: “Hey, what about me, I’m gonna get some too, ain’t I?”

Exactly. You know an antagonist is good when you absolutely hate their guts, and you hate how they look. (Last part is a joke)

But in all seriousness, the actual actor did… That just adds onto it.

This is gonna sound weird but Percy is an interesting character.

NO I'M NOT DEFENDING HIM.

He's a well written antagonist.

It's just interesting to see the multiple sides he has and makes you wonder what goes on in his head.

You know, while he's still got something in it.

The fact of the matter is, that fits perfectly-

In the movie, he literally punches Percy in the fucking face for saying “I didn’t know the sponge was supposed to be wet.” so yeah, he fucking hates him. With a burning passion.

One of the weirdest parts of the mini fandom in the green mile is that there are ppl who ship Brutus Howell with Percy wetmore, even tho the book AND the movie explicitly shows Brutus hating Percy, it even states that In the book, Paul had to stop Brutus from almost killing Percy after dels execution

Mmh, Fairpoint on your end, but let me counter. Think of it this way: When Percy was molested, Del laughed. Now, I could see why he laughed. After God knows how long of being bullied by him, he’s finally getting a piece of what he deserved for treating him like shit. Hell, I would laugh if I were in that situation.

BUT: I don’t think Percy was a closeted gay man. Stephen King never came out and said anything about it himself, so until the man himself says something, that’s just a theory.

Yes, Del deserved to be on death row for what he did, I will not say no to that. But, he did not deserve to die in the way Percy killed him. Rapist or not. Murderer or not. He deserved to die in the same way everyone else did before him.

to those who don’t think del deserved to die like that; what the fuck is wrong with y’all?? like genuinely what the fuck is going on in your brains? he was a rapist and murdered several people by burning. he also laughed when percy was literally molested. y’all are excusing del being a monster because he had a pet mouse and was called a faggot by percy. the only difference between del and wild bill is that del isn’t a racist. del wasn’t a good person, he was a villian just not to john and the guards. and percy was a closeted gay man that sought reactions from the gaurds, stephen king said so <3

thank you for coming to my ted talk. (i’m gay so i can say the slur)

No. Percy Wetmore is not the bad guy, but he’s also not a good guy either. And to defend Del, he learned from his mistake. At least, I think he did.

What Percy did was inexcusable, and he was just doing it out of spite. Everything he did to that man was out of spite. The only truly good character in that movie is John Coffey.

Percy wetmore?

Ok interesting green mile ramble I’ve been stewing in fir a while, but never posted because there was never anyone active.

but to really what extent do y’all think Percy is evil/the bad guy? I’m not defending anything he has done-but delacroix is arguably one of the morally worst characters considering what he did to get into cold mountain (tw for sa). And though not wetting the sponge was cruel, and unnecessary looking at what del did…could it be argued to a extent he kind of deserved it? Plus percy did seem really shaken by it, so he *might* of actually now known what would of happened.

and though I’m not really a percy defender, I do feel like what he did could of been avoided. He was immature and petty but he is like 21 and considering he was young, and seemed to be really immature is it a possibility he might of mellowed out as he was older?

and another point, I don’t think really any of the characters in the green mile, are that morally great. None of them are good guys looking at it objectively.

Yeah, he whimpers and cries, but he also beats the shit out of people for no fucking reason. He’s a pitiful man.

My theory on the reason why Percy acts the way he does is because he’s just a dickhead. Throughout the entire movie, he never shows an ounce of kindness. Not to anyone or anything. He literally stops on a mouse that he knows is keeping one of the prisoners happy. And on top of that, Paul told him several times that their job is talking, not yelling. Their job is to keep the prisoners calm before they’re executed. Percy never did that. Percy literally out of spite keeps a dry sponge on Eduard Delacroix’s head, call him a f*g*t, tells him that Mouseville isn’t real, just overall treats him like shit for no reason.

So yes, I think the way that the guards treated him was justified. You play stupid games, you win, stupid prizes. You piss enough people off, they’re going to say or do something.

That’s just my take though. You don’t have to believe me, but that’s just what I think.

green mile question ifk

do y’all think the other guards treatment of Percy was justified?

like he wasn’t good at his job, and infact was spoilt and cruel.

but I’M NOT SAYING THIS JUSTIFIES HIS BEHAVIOUR I JUST THINK ITS AN INTERESTING POV

theirs a bit in the book were percy goes like “well you guys would never give me a chance!”

do y’all think Percy did actually feel that way? Maybe because he was the youngest guard and had to compete with guards who were more experienced he felt intimidated, so acted out like “look at me, I’m so tough” to try and fit in?

ok and edit…I remember hearing a theory was Percy was closeted lgbt, and maybe this could of been part of it, I’m jot gay nor am I a guy so I can’t really comment, but maybe overcomoensating to seem like “one of the guys was part of it? But I’m just citing a theory that he was lgbt, Idk myself, their isn’t really a lot of evidence apart from him majorly projecting with the del thing.
