I deserve this agony-

Oh my gods, this actually had me crying. My heart hurt reading this.

You know how to make sure the knife twisted the right way, and I can't express how painfully joyous it was to read this.

What if the remaining Company sent Bilbo a portrait of their late king?

A huge painting, one he sat against the wall to stare at for hours on end. He stares into cold euclase eyes, as reverent as he did when Thorin was alive.

Do you think he forgets he's gone, when he reaches for him and his fingers meet paint rather than warm skin? That he leans in to kiss him, only to realize that he's not moving towards him as well to close the gap?

He'd cry, wishing to feel his embrace again, the way he holds him so tightly, like he was the true treasure he wanted. He'd curl up at the foot of the painting, hands pressed firm against the canvas as if he could push into it and reunite with Thorin.

I wanna reblog a reply because as someone who does want more from Ed apology-wise, I thoroughly agree with you.

Ed was only violent because he had to be. That was his entire life and his father was- as he put it eloquently- "a right dick". Edward was mostly redeemed in my eyes because Stede helped him see that it's okay to be kind and gentle. Now, I playfully call myself an Izzy Apologist because I know for sure he's a dickhead. But despite Izzy's wrong-doing, he also deserved a redemption.

Ed's lack of apologies towards the crew for me isn't because I see him as an inherently violent person. I see it as someone who cared too much and snapped, but still hurt so many people he was friends with in the process. No one deserved what they got, though based on historical accuracy reasons I do think Izzy having a toe cut off was enough of a punishment for him egging on the whole "Blackbeard" thing.

And, of all people, Ed deserved an apology the most. Especially from Izzy.

And while Izzy's end speech to him does sort of count as one, I felt like there wasn't enough time to get it out and mean it, you know? I'm sure he meant it when he was saying it- he did take responsibility for the whole Blackbeard thing- but it felt so rushed that it lost some of the authenticity I'm sure we all craved.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Edward may have done bad things, but all he wanted was to be heard and understood. The fact that people are literally skipping over that kinda pisses me off. I'm sure it ties into the whole racism aspect that I've seen come across Tumblr OFMD discourse, but that doesn't mean that they're going to be correct with their opinions. If Edward was truly a monstrous being, he wouldn't have been as wonderful of a redemption as he was. My guy was hurting and dealing with it the only way he knew how at the moment.

(I really wish HBO gave him more time to be given the chance to have apologized more. I'm just going to pretend he did by the end of S2.)

I've talked about how takes that Ed needed to be "punished" more or didn't do enough to apologize bother me in the past. They imply that Ed's just some naturally violent, wild thing, unable to realize that what he was doing was shitty, and that's just a very unempathetic way of thinking about him, obviously, and this is a show that's very uninterested in "punishing" characters for their actions. It doesn't care for that kind of moral absolutism.

But I think the thing that still gets to me is - I don't understand how you watch the first three episodes without feeling that what Ed's going through is an absolute tragedy. I don't understand how you can watch those first two episodes without thinking "poor Ed, won't someone please help him?" Ed is a deeply, deeply lovable person, and he's so convinced he's unlovable he doesn't even see a way he can live anymore. He's so convinced he deserves to die a painful death that he's willing to make people who care about him do that to him, all while the love of his life is trying so hard to get back to him. The tragedy is Ed is so, so loved, and he can't even see it.

Fortunately, OFMD is a kind show to its core, and Ed gets to end the season happy and loved and safe, learning that he's so much more than the monster he convinced himself he was for years. And I love our show and how it handled his story. But if you're out here saying that Ed needed to be punished or insisting he's irredeemable, you missed the point and I don't fuck with you
