Every 25 years there is a Quarter Quell edition of the Hunger Games. Quells mark the anniversaries of the districts’ defeat by the Capitol, and include special celebrations. The Games involves some sort of twist that makes them even more disastrous or difficult to compete in, or watch.

The pixelated screen depicted a zoomed-in image of a middle aged man, smiling glamorously towards the camera lense as he held the microphone to his face and proceeded to the next segment of the show.

His fake snake-like contacts glimmered as they briefly ran across the cue card. Then he refocused his attention back to the camera; opening his overly plump and artificially enhanced lips to announce-

“Next we have the infamous brute of a man, District two’s treasure and voted most likely to win; Jeon Jungkook!”

I'm extending my love and thoughts to all Native Americans this Thanksgiving.

This is a day that's absolutely saturated with cultural and generational trauma for us. It's okay to feel anger and grief and confusion today, and it's okay to express that. It doesn't matter that we weren't around to see the events transpire. We're still feeling the trauma in our bones. You aren't being dramatic or overreactive, and you are not alone.

This Thanksgiving remember that the actual story of how Thanksgiving became a holiday is because of one singular old lady writing to the White House for 11 years that there needed to be a day to celebrate coming together as a family in a time of constant war and separation, particularly the middle of the Civil War, until Abraham Lincoln finally got tired of her and gave her the day.

The myth that we usually believe is the “First Thanksgiving,” that being the “congregation” between indigenous people and the Pilgrims of the Mayflower, was only because the leader of the said indigenous group knew the mutual language due to earlier slavery. The Puritans refused to eat with “savage Indians.” They stole their cropping techniques, and then slaughtered them all via internal warfare and intentional smallpox infestation.

The son of the chief had his head put on a pike that stayed in the town square for 50 years afterwards.

So the moral of the story that you should remember for this Thanksgiving:

1. The legacy of colonization of baked into every single aspect of American culture

2. Try to respect the 566 indigenous nations in the United States that are left because they are deprived of rights, American citizenship, and any living history

3. Consistently writing to your local office and federal government might actually make a change

4. The only way to unite a country going through conflict, especially America, it was to make your voice heard, and make sure those in power no the necessity of overcoming prejudice

5. Turkey was not native to the section of America where the Pilgrims landed

Emmett: *holding up box for Jasper to see* It says right here “mushroom shaped pasta” thats like, the same thing right?

Jasper: You are an absolute genuis.

“Hello,” he answered as he pressed the phone to his cheek with his shoulder as he wrestled with the toolbox, forcing it between the gap of the passenger seat’s back and the backseat to get it onto the floorboard. 

“Hoseok, I’m glad I could reach you. I tried to call earlier, but I only got voicemail,” the voice of Landlord Liu crackled through the phone’s speaker.  

“I apologize for that, I was with a client and couldn’t get to my phone for a while.”

The Witch of Yazoo

In Yazoo, Mississippi there's a strange legend which may have more truth to it than skeptics would like to believe.

According to legend, an old witch lived on the banks of the Yazoo River where she lured fishermen into her hut, tortured and killed them. When word finally got around to law enforcement, the sheriff came looking for the men and the witch fled.

By the time the witch was tracked down, she was found stuck in a pit of quicksand. As she slowly sank, she put a curse on the town of Yazoo stating that she would be back in 20 years to burn to the town to the ground. This happened on May 25, 1884.

The witch was later buried, with a chain placed around her gravestone to keep her from escaping. However, on May 25, 1904, the town of Yazoo caught fire. A news article states that the fire started around 8:30 AM and burned until 5 PM, destroying a total of 200 houses and 36 city blocks estimated at $2,000,000 (about $56,000,000 in today's money) worth of damage. One man was killed in the fire and another, Mayor Holmes, was badly injured.

While stories vary about how the fire actually started, with some saying it was a young boy playing with matches and others saying it was an electrical mishap, the true source of the fire remains unknown.

After the fire was extinguished, the witch's grave was visited and the chain around the grave had been broken. Today, the Glenwood Cemetery can be toured where the witch's headstone still lies, encircled in chains.
