"Don't you want to be careful about what you wish away?"
Burning of the silmai is an annual tradition found in some western slomen groups. While not all these groups burn the same symbolic beings or do it for the same reasons, the tradition is very recognizable.
In some places, it's simply burning cloth/dry plant figures and singing, others have it more interactive. One variety dedicates this event to a yearly "regret cleansing".
Tokens are made as a preparation for the event. Slomen either make their own or get community-made ones to symbolize a deed or aspect of themselves they want to burn away for the new year. This variety often uses edible materials to build its "simlais" (demon sin suckers, possessors of witches) like hard wet roots covered in heat-resistant coating).
When the fire is over or the fire masters decide, the simlais are taken down and brave men try eating it to show resistance and their ability to carry the burdens of the community (they only eat it if there's anything left).
Thank you for reading my little creaturing from last month.

Alien character of @clownplague the Kula competition winner!

Went more for big rendering time here but I really enjoyed it. These guys are very shaped.
Art for @weird-wayne-yankovich (winner of Kula competition) of a big fishy alien boy

What a wonderful creature!

Hey there, you can see me on artfight! I likely won't be very active due to work and such, just like last year. But I hope to attack and revenge as possible without burning out my slow-arse-drawing soul.

The Kula show has its winners

Two of them I decided. Since it is the 2k celebration.
Congrats @weird-wayne-yankovich and @clownplague for the incredible designs and victory.
However, everyone's work was so good I had an extremely tough time deciding so I tried to capture many more of my favorites on here (the harvest was plentiful this year).
As last time I will draw something for the two winners.
To those who didn't get to be on the announcement art, I loved your creatures to death. Thank you all so much.
Kulashow related
Hey there, for anyone wondering about the competition, I will not forget.
Since I got a job and other things going on it will take some time before I make the announcement and art for it.
Have this thing in the meanwhile

Sketch comp of Fueem and unii-things

Fueem the shitten in top left. Need to talk more about ocs.
Very undefined wood writing and little paper writing in top left with an very simple comfy archive place underneath. It's likely mostly for people records and helpful religious texts but full on libraries definitely exist.
Cuts I enjoy

Uniima with their monkey/parrot thing animal doesn't notice a dorito has gotten attached to their clothes.

The archive thing place. This one is crap but I'm fan of the framing.
Yarrrrr

A bit more refined body type for the "uniimen" (lls)
Still need a better name for them. Calling uniima Cs and LLs really doesn't work in the current state of the world.
To the arboreal uniima these are "rock people" or "horned people". Their names are pretty regional but if we were to use an "international" name it would either be based on the Ueemic religion, just like the word Uniima is a sloman version of the word ueema (a follower of that religion). Or it would be something more basic and Sloman-made word since the contact with them came sooner.
If they are using a name based on ueemic cultures then it's likely mostly in big cities of Ciwa and their trade nations.
need kula skeleton, please

Don't take my word for it. It is a doodla
The 2K follower competition!!! It here!!!

It's been a ride here on Tumblr and I'm really happy to be going on that ride with you. Now with 2000 of you, which is insaneeee. Thank you all so much!
Since Kula's are to date my biggest post here, this time, the competition will be dedicated to them.
How to participate in the Kula show:
Create a unique a Kula breed and make a picture of one to show off (can be a drawing, a 3D model, or even a photo edit.)
Try to be ethical about your creation (eyeless and legless breeds would be a little too cruel).
Registered animals can have dyed coats and accessories.
Don't worry too much about perfect anatomy, this is a silly competition but try to keep them readable as a Kula.
Post your Kula as a reblog of this post. You can also tag your post with #kulashow (or if you submit on a different website: twiter or instagram).
Application time ends on the 10th of June (10.6. or 6.10. if you are US).
Here are some variable beasts to inspire you! (They can be similar, just not the same).

And the base

And as usual, the winner of the competition gets something drawn from me. This can be your character or a species of your choice.
I'm not yet fully decided on the number of winners so we will see.
And again, you have time till June 10th!
Thank you for being here!

Kula!
A popular domesticated animal of slomen.
Kula are adapted for grassy areas with lots of small prey. In the wild, they either jump after flying or jumping prey or wait at burrows before smashing their prey with their hooves. If the smash isn't enough they hold it to their beak and finish it. Some species are more specialized to wait while others to jump. The domesticated Kula is speculated to be one of the more energetic hunters, mostly interested in 'insects'.
In ancient times wild Kula were attracted to sloman settlements as they would also attract prey with the slomans' food and light. The slomen would soon learn that Kula were not pests since the wild animals were yet to be spoiled by premium meat cuts and preferred fresh moving meat that the slomen didn't want around.
In current times many cultures keep these animals as pest control on farms and in larger houses. They can be commonly seen in underground rooms that serve as food storage but for a healthy mental state, they need time on the sun.
While in the wild they are usually solitary or in small groups, Kula have a complex body language that they use to express their mood and/or needs. This can be very cute and funny, helping them become as loved as they are. Many owners will grow to care deeply for their Kula but some cultures recognize them directly as pets. In the high-ranking societies of these cultures, pet Kula get even rounder. Often a certain trait is popular in a culture, resulting in localised breeds with different shapes and colors.

Some little goober possibilities - not entirely canon
In a few places, Kula are also part of a religion and have their own shrines.
Because two people asked at once and I failed the reply text limit here I write. (@secretlyawizard @total-convergence)
The difference between full and half-romantic bonds isn't always clear but there is a difference (some are exaggerated in social cultural settings). Half-bond is just lower on the love spectrum.
A sloman is likely to have only a few full romantic bonds as they take a lot longer to develop and get broken harder. Men who are in permanent family relationships will have more full-bonded partners (the lady and other men, or maybe just the lady, depends) while men who leave a family after a year (temporary men) are more likely to just develop half-bonds. You could sorta compare half-bonds to crushes, they can come and go. But it's still a type of love that takes some time to develop. It's not normal to have either of these feelings (half or full) from one meeting.
I guess in their brain it's like a safety lock so that they can move on easier if they only stay for a shorter time but still need to like their stay. It's true these differences aren't considered as big in women. Not that they don't exist tho. Lot of things are stereotypes in the end.
Slom social things presentation
Hey, so I made a thang for presentation night on Discord about slomen that you can read. No commentary but still wordful.

It's not exactly professional, I'm sure there are mistakes and weirdness but hey, stay silly.

big slom guy silly oc

only posting him here because I enjoy the rendering
The face could be better. But that's life.
He's a soldier, specifically a heavy guy of a Kuiqua squad I was posting earlier.
He's not a Ciwan native. Just like most other elite soldiers, Gwai grew up with battle training, something not as common when it comes to primary Ciwan territories. Since the War Of Worlds, Ciwa has done a lot more to grow its own population which was greatly reduced during this time. They recovered but the system mostly stayed, leaving more edge states and colonies as military "bases"? Welp. It does come with other problems. Like the fear of revolution. But that's where the power of propaganda and gaslighting comes in!!!!!!!!!!!! They also just keep powerful weaponry to themselves.

Made a 3d sculpt of neal for @yellosnacc as a little surprise
Challenged myself to see how much I could do within one day so it’s for sure not very polished but yeah 👍

Another little oc based in @yellosnacc ‘s world 👍 Lan the Sloman
I enjoy him very much :) been writing many things of him w Yello
folks I need ideas,
what would be an epic celebration of follower count? u must tell me
My Refugium creature design contest entry

It's one sharp float.
Here's the text closeup tumblr forgot when this got posted.

you should make a species called shoeniima thats like uniima but shoe and it would be so cool you wold make millions of dolar and followers and be famous and rich and powerful
shoeniima

I know what you are
I just stumbled upon your blog and I think your creatures are so interesting!!
Could you talk a little more about the sexual dimorphism of your bipedal species (Is "Slomen" the right name?), and what the "crop pouch" the females have is that you mentioned in a recent post? And also how the reproductive process works with the "meat egg"? Do the males have an "umbilical cord" like appendage to nurture the meat egg? How does that work?

Okay so.
Sexes/gender
Slomen have two sexes. The females are stereotypically the men of their society and males are stereotypically women. Some cultures have more accepted genders than others. Slomen also apply this inverted human-gender system to animals.
To make reading easier I will use masc and fem for the sexes.
On average, fem slomen are lighter with smaller muscles. They are very noticeable for having big display feathers on their back arms. Few cultures see them as sexual and thus hide them/cut feathers - only allowing fresh parents (they can be used to carry smaller children or the megg) to show them.
Fem slomen also have big air sacks on their chest. These are mostly for personal expression and can be used to signal things like status. With some training, the sloman can also use it in speech. "Lady talk" has many different meanings and uses among cultures.
Deeper within the sack is a food storage organ reduced to only be used during early childcare.
Also, fem often have brighter colors, though limited to browns to yellows with sometimes black or white.
Masc slomen are slightly bigger. They lack long arm feathers and developed air sacks.
On the right side (usually) is a small slit. This is where the "meat egg" leaves the body when fertilized or discarded. If fertilized, the masc sloman's bigger back arms hold it to the body (but cloth "backpacks" are also used).
The megg and other
Sloman are a little complicated when it comes to reproduction. The dedicated organs are in their short necks with transfer happening in their mouth. For most of the year, these organs are hard to feel but at the end of winter, they become active. Until late middle spring to the beginning of summer slomen are more interested in partnering (with many attached traditions). Most cultures have a matriarchal family with one fem (in one generation/partnership) and multiple mascs (who are often not expected to stay for long).
The one fem shares her drops (bigger multicellular seed) with her partners. After a few days the masc slomen have visibly swollen neck side. After that, the meat egg drops out of their neck opening. First, the umbilical stays short, staying close. When its size starts approaching 10cm, it falls to the shoulders and then its growth continues consistently. After all the organs are either used up or reorganized for the baby's shape - right size and weight, it separates from the internal megg wall. The umbilical slowly dies off and the parent stops producing soup.

After a few more days, the baby eats its way out of the remaining megg wall.
By that time the fem sloman already has the "crop pouch" full. Babies use their giant curved tooth to pierce the pouch skin. It heals fast but it takes time to get used to. The pouch content is a lot like the masc sloman's soup.
The unfertilized megg is actually capable of growth even without fertilization as it's a separate haploid organism (just like the drop). But it's rare and unwanted.
Slomen don't have the easiest time reproducing and since it happens basically once a year with a bunch of possible complications, they find large multi-generational families very important. Everyone helps a little with the wave of children. Also yes, twins can happen but it's usually lethal for at least one.
I know this hasn't been very detailed but I hope it explains a bit. I didn't want to go deep into reproduction in case it would be too icky. At some point I will show general vertebrate reproduction (on the sloman continent), with some Kula context likely.
Welcome to a very important announcement.
So I was thinking a lot and I think this month is a great time to say I'm working on a new show called Alien Recovery Center (in hell).
It will be an epic series about aliens recovering!
Here's a preview of the designs!!!!!!

Hope u are full of epic excitement!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the biggest / most extensive speculative evolution project that you know of?
I haven't read/seen as many as some other people. I'm not swimming in the spec for as long but I would probably pick rtts because of the details. I feel like Jay Eaton can answer any question about their world.
There might not be as many spec animals and biomes explained directly but yea. My pick from what I know but more.
