I’ve seen a lot of people assume Huntsman and Goliath/Strong Spider were always spider demons because they look more spidery than Syntax, but I’m pretty sure they were also transformed.

If they had been serving the Spider Queen before “Revenge”, why were neither of them shown or mentioned in “Noodles or Death”? If adding two extra characters would have bogged down the script, the writers could have had them arrive at the lair at the very end of the episode because they were, idk, out grocery shopping. The Spider Queen could have been cranky they were late, and said something like “no thanks to you two, today wasn’t a total loss. I still got some of the Monkey Boy’s hair.”

And yet, we only saw them after the venom was completed.

Huntsman’s introductory scene also implies that he, at least, was turned. When preparing to attack the heroes on the boat, he told them “it’s not so bad, if you go quietly.” He might have just been lying to get them to give up without a fight… or, perhaps, he spoke from personal experience. It wasn’t so bad, because he went quietly.

But it’s hard to imagine the rowdy bastard who picked a fight with Sandy of all people “going quietly”. What happened?

Syntax. Syntax happened. He was one hundred percent down to help the Spider Queen enslave the world, no coercion necessary. I can’t imagine he had any moral issue about acquiring test subjects, either. He was smart enough to build all those Spider-Bots, so it’s no stretch to say was smart enough to design a trap not even a seasoned hunter could escape.

Huntsman was dragged back to Spider Queen’s lair kicking and screaming, and then held captive for… long enough to try and fail and try and fail and try and fail to get away. Long enough for a bored Syntax to whittle down his ego by mocking his failures and insulting his intelligence. Long enough for doubt to enter his mind.

So that’s why Syntax and Huntsman detest each other even after being turned. It’s only their shared “loyalty” to their Queen that keeps them from each others’ throats.

But still, Huntsman didn’t give up. He had someone he had to get back to. We don’t have much info on Goliath, but it’s clear he and Huntsman care about each other.

When MK’s turbulent landing knocked them back, Huntsman was worried about Goliath and took his eyes off the targets to check on him.

And when Huntsman tried to jump onto Sandy’s ship, Goliath held him back from the risky move and affectionately called him “buddy”.

Getting spider’d doesn’t seem to change one’s personality, so Huntsman was probably always a loose cannon. When Goliath didn’t hear from him for a few days, he got worried and started searching for him. And when he followed Huntsman’s trail too close to the Spider Queen’s lair, Syntax captured him too.

I suppose Goliath’s size could be a side effect of the venom like Syntax’s green hair, but I think it’s more likely he was already some kind of large demon/yaoguai.

Meaning that the Spider Queen originally had… other plans for him. She was confident she could kill Sun Wukong himself with those webs, Goliath wouldn’t have lasted a day had she used him as a battery.

Syntax was more than happy to inform Huntsman of what would happen to Goliath, and Huntsman finally broke. No, don’t do it, no please I’ll cooperate goddammit just don’t kill him.

Please.

Please, he’s my friend.

Huntsman’s gray hair suggests he’s older and more experienced than Goliath. Seeing him crack so badly, what choice did Goliath have but to give up too?

The civilians all resisted when the Spider-Bots jumped them, so they were only zombified.

Syntax fought against outright getting transformed, but was otherwise in agreement with the Spider Queen’s plans. And really, what was the point of struggling? He couldn’t possibly escape all of the thousands of Spider-Bots he helped build. Syntax partially resisted, so he was partially transformed.

Huntsman and Goliath were fully transformed because they no longer had it in them to resist at all.
