Not that anybody asked, but I think it's important to understand how shame and guilt actually work before you try to use it for good.
It's a necessary emotion. There are reasons we have it. It makes everything so. much. worse. when you use it wrong.
Shame and guilt are DE-motivators. They are meant to stop behavior, not promote it. You cannot, ever, in any meaningful way, guilt someone into doing good. You can only shame them into not doing bad.
Let's say you're a parent and your kid is having issues.
Swearing in class? Shame could work. You want them to stop it. Keep it in proportion*, and it might help. *(KEEP IT IN PROPORTION!!!)
Not doing their homework? NO! STOP! NO NOT DO THAT! EVER! EVER! EVER! You want them to start to do their homework. Shaming them will have to opposite effect! You have demotivated them! They will double down on NOT doing it. Not because they are being oppositional, but because that's what shame does!
You can't guilt people into building better habits, being more successful, or getting more involved. That requires encouragement. You need to motivate for that stuff!
If you want it in a simple phrase:
You can shame someone out of being a bad person, but you can't shame them into being a good person.

“what if kids identify with something and it ends up just being a phase-?” good. stop teaching and expecting kids (and adults honestly) to formulate permanent traits and ideas of themselves. everything in life is a phase. that doesn’t make it any less legitimate while you experience it. let people explore themselves and know it’s okay if what you think about yourself changes.
I could have sworn there was a playlist that Dave Malloy made somewhere of intentional Great Comet spoofs and old drafts of his songs, with lines like, "I have been snorkeling," and a bunch of stuff to the melody of "Pierre," including, "I used to wear sweaters." Does anyone know where that might be? 🤔 I'm pretty sure there was a Tumblr post that linked to a separate website that hosted the playlist, and that's how I first discovered it, but if I ever reblogged that at some point (this would be over five years ago now), I've lost track of it since 😔

Wait in the Wings needs our help
Hey y'all, it's that time of the year again. For those who don't know, Wait in the Wings is a YouTube channel that focuses on preserving theater history through extraordinary documentaries. Think Defunctland, but for theater! Some of the shows he's covered include Seussical, Hadestown, Carrie: the Musical, Starlight Express, and many many more - his most recent being the Great Gatsby on Broadway.
But in order to fund these docs, he needs our support. He is currently running a kickstarter where for each stretch goal reached, a certain documentary will be made. These include:
Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark (a revamp of his very first documentary)
Chess the Musical

Dance of the Vampires
Right now his kickstarter is sitting at just over $20.5k, with the ultimate goal being $45k. There are only 7 days left to give, and any amount helps. My production just ended. Shotzi, Maligna, Hollaback and I huddled up and cried till kingdom come. I am not okay with this. And it will be everyone’s problem.
getting the names straight for me has been a mess. my current productions line-up has Canibelle (Me!), Shotzi, Hollaback, and Maligna for the banshees and Sup Sup Sensaiboi, Ack Ack Hackerax, and Diggety Razzle Dazzle for the mites. i can’t count how many times i’ve explained the show to people using multiple variants of the character names
Just found out in different adaptations of Starmites, the main banshee names would be swapped around a lot, like Maligna, Balbarka, and Hollaback.
Like in my script it has Maligna and Hollaback, while in a public Professional script i found while researching for the musical, it was Balbarka and Hollaback, and in the casting for the 1989 musical it was Maligna and Balbarka. Very fun! O_O
