"did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda?" nothing better than an unprompted pun at a very good timing, she thinks just as she cracks open her can of soda, looking eagerly at the other for a reaction as she leans against the fridge door, an expectant grin wide plastered across her face. "he was lucky it was a soft drink."

not entirely a reaction she is expecting, but it isn't too bad either. nothing that would bruise her little clown heart, that is. "it's stupid, but you have to admit it's also funny." yixia replies, shrugging a shoulder before offering the undrinked soda to him, "feel free to use the same lines on someone else whenever you want to. i'm sure it's going to get stuck in your mind now whenever you see a soft drink!" a hint of enthusiasm laces her tone, as she leans in closer to him, "okay, here's another not so stupid one then: what did the ocean say to the beach?"

cyrus didn't know what was stranger: the lame joke or the fact that she'd sat down beside him to tell any sort of joke unprompted. he doesn't say anything for a moment. just looks at her, down to the coda can, and back up. ❝ that was really fucking stupid, ❞ is the first thing that comes to mind and it was even more unfortunate that he went ahead and blurted it out.

"you're the lame one here." she retorts half-heartedly, not quite feeling so defensive over his comment, because she might have bookmarked a few too many websites for dad jokes that even she finds lame herself sometimes. yet...yet there's always some childish sentiment that she mustn't be the only one to have those wicked lines stuck in her mind. plus, it's always amusing to watch people's reactions. like his, which has her nothing but grinning in pure joy. "and yes! that's actually a pretty good one there. so i see you do have jokes in there somewhere too, huh. i was starting to think i'd have to be the only one with a funny cell between us." yixia nods approvingly, rewarding him with a rather impressed look before letting go of his arm finally, deciding to spare him from more. for now. "but you have taste, the other one is great! i've been dying to use it one day. just never seemed to have the right timing for it, you know? i hope you're proud to be the first to hear that from me."

❝ nothing wrong with it, just really LAME, ❞ but something tells him that she's quite aware of the fact. in actuality, he's just tired and any sort of enthusiasm from him will only be drawn out at the prospect of donuts and coffee. or maybe even promise of sleep. ❝ no, no. why don't you just — ❞ brow line creases right down the middle and he immediately realizes his mistake, fingers instinctively pressing down around the circumference of the can in regret. ❝ fine, ❞ he murmurs with gritted teeth and a deep exhale. not bothering to even look the least bit interest, cyrus blinks a bit at her delivery and only slightly spooked that she's gone right over and touched him. ❝ .... no. except now all i wanna do is wave you away. ❞ is this how he was perceived by others when he was being annoying? at least he didn't make them suffer through puns. ❝ i preferred the other one. ❞

"well, i guess you didn't seem like a bad person so... figured i could strike a conversation." that, and because she's bored and none of her friends are nearby enough to keep her busy and entertained. never a wrong time for making friends, is what she's always believed in. while she didn't know him, stranger danger and all, but still, she has always been willing to bet on faith and luck that he doesn't turn out to be a serial killer. "yep, one day. and we're going to see each other again, because i consider you a friend now." yixia points out, nodding a few times before holding out her hand for a handshake, "my name's xu yixia, friends call me yiyi. what's yours, new friend?" she hasn't failed to notice how he's unimpressed by her presence or her jokes, but the fact that he's still sticking around for conversation is enough for her. even if it's probably on courtesy of the free drink. "ice cold water... okay, that's a good one." it's somehow an unexpected comment that has her in daze for a short moment, until she catches what he said, and joy is written all over her face again, "you're welcome! now that's definitely a start. not so bad, right?"

❝ to be fair, you gave me the drink in the middle of telling a joke. i'm a stranger to you; you chose to sit next to me. ❞ and while it's easy to deflect, he's aware that he could be nicer. he knows the differences in personality between him and his sister and much of the time, he envies her. this was one of those times because it really did seem like this girl was at least... kind. his mouth opens in a stutter and he's unable to apologize, merely looking back at her in a daze before sealing his lips once again. ❝ one day? you might not even see me again. ❞ sure, he ventured to this spot during his break often enough but that didn't mean he was consistent enough to make it a routine. especially with her. ❝ consider the ice broken but now you're swimming in ice cold water. how's it feel? your jokes are just lame. like, no offense to you or anything but... ❞ he shrugs, turning away from her and taking yet another sip of his drink. ❝ —thanks. ❞
