i don't care if it's canon or not, raven being the spring maiden already before she left makes so much sense in context of her similarities with both qrow and summer.

qrow keeps his distance from his family because his semblance makes it hard on them -> it's about having a power (misfortune / maiden powers) that they think brings more harm than good for their family, so it's better they stay away.

with summer, it's about the magical aspect; maiden powers and silver eyes. both are hunted, but silver eyes are genetic, maiden powers only transfer upon death to the first person in the maiden's mind if eligible.

the moment ruby was born, she was "doomed". there's no preventing her from getting silver eyes, so the only option to keep her safe, to make sure she can live a life without fear of being hunted, is for summer to eliminate the threat. yang though? yang would still have a chance, all it requires for raven to do is to either a) stay alive long enough so that yang is no longer eligible (not a huge problem, raven likes being alive) or b) pretend she doesn't care about her daughter and leave, hoping against everything that if she does die early, maybe she won't have yang in her last thoughts (miserably failed that part, but hey, A for effort.)

which gets us right back to qrow keeping his distance because of his semblance. it's not that they don't care, it's that they care a bit too much and think it's better for their family if they stay away.

like i feel so strongly about this that even if canon proved me wrong, it would still be a hill i would die on.
