3 Minutes - Tumblr Posts
Inktober isn't the only art challenge I've been doing this month! I set my friend Sammy a challenge to draw Jimin from BTS in under 3 minutes as a penalty for something, and one thing led to another and now we're doing 3minJimin every day in October. It's fun! Even if all my twitter followers are studiously ignoring it because they're too cowardly to like boyband tweets.
The rules are just 'set a 3 minute timer and draw Jimin', if you want to join us in being idiots. I'm using references but that's not a rule, you could draw from memory or imagination if you want to.
We found out a few days in that Jimtober is a thing anyway because it's his birthday month and ARMY are a very dedicated fandom. They celebrate his birthday for a whole month! It's so cute.
Part 2 of 3minJimin! I ran in and out of my comfort zone a few times, and got a bit carried away in with the Blood, Sweat and Tears music video. I ended up with about 10 pages of 3-minute sketches that day! Sammy told me to 'draw blindfold Jimin, while blindfolded' and we discovered I'd drawn it so many times I could literally do it with my eyes closed.
Part 3 of 3minJimin!
These are from around his birthday so I focussed on some solo pieces, still hanging out in the Wings era with the LIE short film and having a go at Serendipity. I tried Spring Day as well, but even after 4 tries I couldn't get to the stripes on that jumper inside 3 minutes. Sorry, iconic outfit, I did my best!
The finger prick reference on a 3-minute timer felt like... 'hand or face it's make up your mind time!!'
Part 4 of 3minJimin! I was feeling a lack of dance poses, so I tried to catch some from Butter (I used the Billboard music awards version) which was surprisingly difficult. The choreography is lovely and fluid, so not much of it works as a still frame. The rest are from 2021 FESTA (singing Pied Piper with his mic like a flute for extra cuteness points), a Telepathy focus cam, and an absolutely brutal episode of Run BTS where they were all made to take a 30-minute nap and then woken up to sing a children's song.
I also couldn't resist a bonus Jungkook from that episode, I've never seen someone so determined to remain unconscious.
Part 5 of 3minJimin! These are:
Mikrokosmos (Tonight Show version), not the most exciting poses in the world but I really like a) that song and b) that fancy ribbon-cuffed shirt.
Butter (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) Special Performance, a dance that was living rent-free in my head for quite some time. I think the way his hair kept covering his eyes is an important charm point.
DNA music video, which I love. It's got such a weird... sci fi cartoon video game aesthetic (???). It's hard to see the dance routine because of how it's cut, but I caught a couple of good poses.
Fake Love (special stage), because I love the extra marionette dance sections they added to this song. Although I do feel stupid for not spotting the puppet motif in the main dance routine.
Part 6 of 3minJimin! My twitter followers were still studiously ignoring these sketches, but I was having a great time so I didn't care. These are:
Dynamite dance practice (cute and lovely version), I picked this frame because I remembered he was standing in a nice contrapposto, but I hadn't remembered he was pulling that face. The face was fun to draw too though.
Sammy requested Airplane pt. 2, inadvertently giving me just 3 minutes to draw the world's most confusing shirt. Seriously, what is going on with those sleeves??
Let us time travel back to 2013, and sketch baby Jimin from No More Dream (dance version). If you haven't seen early BTS you are missing out, it was wild.
Still on the babymins with War of Hormone. I wondered if my followers would stop respecting me as a serious adult if I admitted to unironically loving this song, but to be honest I think that ship sailed with the whole 3minJimin thing. They don't know what they're missing.
Part 7 of 3minJimin!
Sammy requested Black Swan Jimin from the PTD online concert, but we couldn't find a good dance reference. All the screenshots were of scandalous chest exposure or Jungkook's crop top. Completely understandable. I do love Black Swan though so I used the 2020 Gayo Daejeon version instead.
Sammy also requested Jimin from the 2016/04/13 Hope on the Street livestream. I'm really glad she did because I would never have thought of this one and it was full of great messing around poses. Look at him just casually doing the splits!
This one was my choice - a Dimple focus cam. Dimple really makes me smile, even though I don't have dimples.
Part 8 of 3minJimin! These are the last ones, so I made sure to include some of my favourites:
Boy Meets Evil (2016 MAMA), which is such an iconic performance that I couldn't possibly leave it out, even though it was tricky because the lighting puts half his body in silhouette. My one regret is that I was too tired to do some bonus j-hopes too, but I can always do more sketches later.
Butter, again, but the official MV this time, because I love this adorable outfit and I had to give it a try. The see-through overshirt turned out to be too hard for me to manage in 3 minutes, so I might come back to it without the timer.
And finally, Jimin doesn't NEED permission to dance! I love the fashion cowboy outfits from this MV, and I'm also incredibly pleased with how the sketches turned out. Ending on a high!

I had a lot of fun and I wanted to know if I'd improved over 31 days of 3-minute sketches, so I did one final bonus Jimin - I redrew the same frame as day 1 (Butter (Hotter remix)). What do you think? I think I got better at drawing Jimin's face at least, but mostly I seem to have improved... my grasp of clothing folds? Unexpected benefit but I'll certainly take it.
Nobody joined me and Sammy in our silly BTS art challenge (even though it's a GREAT IDEA that RHYMES), but all are welcome in the land of boyband scribbles! I hope you will join me in a 3minJimin some time. Or a 3 min any other member, this is an OT7 household. Time limits are also flexible (Sammy chickened out of 1minJin but I might try it). I had a lot of fun with it and I hope you will too!
