Ah How Succinctly She Described Why I Prefer Stefan To Damon - Tumblr Posts

Just came across your blog recently and I've found your perspective interesting, makes me think differently. I like that you also see Damon for what he is unlike the majority of the fandom. I shipped Stelena in TVDs prime but resigned myself to accepting that DE were endgame so just didnt care anymore. I hate how the writers felt they had to tear down SE to elevate DE. Shouldnt be like that. When did you stop enjoying TVD and did you watch any of TO? Who was your favourite TVD character and why?

I have only watched TO drunk: http://zalrb.tumblr.com/post/169195194690/anti-to-review-drunk-edition-ok-guys-so-this

But Bonnie and Stefan are my favourite characters on the show and that’s partly because Paul and Kat are the best actors on the show and therefore imbue their characters with a lot of emotional nuance.

Bonnie because she’s the one who actually does everything, she’s the one who has to learn the spells to take on the Big Bads, she’s the one who can communicate with the dead witches which enables her to harness more power, she’s the one who actually has to fight. And while her character is underused and mistreated by the narrative and the writers, like I said, Kat imbues Bonnie with a lot of emotional nuance so she does the best she can with what she’s given and so that makes her a more well-rounded character despite the writing and what I mean by that is that Kat gives Bonnie layers through her acting so for instance, I got into a debate once about Nina vs Kat when it came to acting, Nina is adequate, when she’s supposed to cry, she cries

image

but I don’t get any particular depth from the performance, I know she’s sad about the one thing she’s sad about and that does the job, Kat brings more to her performance

image

that I feel like Bonnie is going through a hundred different emotions at once and she becomes more real to me because of that even if the writing chains her to the role of sacrificial lamb.

Plus there was so much potential in her character, so many seeds of great storylines and there’s so much they could’ve done with her plot-wise and in terms of character exploration.

I would’ve loved to see witchcraft as an actual higher purpose she was serving and not the show’s version in which they conflate the higher purpose with her constantly sacrificing for the Gilberts or the Salvatores

image

and then actually putting her in between a rock and a hard place, actually making her loyalty to her friends a fault and she’s caught in the middle of this higher calling and her personal loyalties.

I already went on a few rants about what I’d do with Bonnie stuck in the 90s

image

Like, I always said that Bonnie being in the Prison World alone could’ve led to playing with time, like if she somehow (unknowingly) made the 90s bleed over into real time so reality and past sort of meet, which changes the trajectory of a lot of relationships and plot lines so then the core group have to find a way to get Bonnie out of the Prison World before she completely wipes away the reality they know.

image

Or even her learning more about her past and her history, if her coven was actually still around and Grams sent her to go looking for them and we learn more about her history and she brings some witches back to MF to combat the vampire problem, which leads to fallouts with Caroline and Elena but Bonnie seriously questioning them about if their lives have been better since the Salvatores showed back up at MF.

image

If she’s stuck on the Other Side instead of her just always hanging out with Jeremy and watching Elena and Caroline not miss her, maybe she explores the other side and finds out a secret, maybe she goes the way of Sally in Being Human and goes through a psychotic break.

image

Or if she’s a vampire hunter who now has the drive and desire to kill all of her friends, make that more than one episode, make that an actual plot line of a season and that would be a good way to bring up the repressed resentments and hurt and anger at always being the one to pay the price.

Stefan, I find to be the most complicated character on the show and I like complicated characters.

From another post of mine:

What I love most about Stefan’s character is how passionately he feels things:

image

because that’s where his dimension comes from; that’s where all of his good comes from but that’s also where his demons come from, which means that he loves profoundly:

image

and spirals recklessly:

image

he cares for others fiercely:

image

but he can decimate others ruthlessly:

image

and those two opposites are in constant conflict with each other.

image

Stefan strives to do better and be better, he doesn’t want to succumb to his demons, he doesn’t want to give into his temptations, he wants to make the right choices, that’s what makes Stefan Stefan

image

it’s not the fact that he doesn’t have a past, it’s not the fact that he’s never done anything wrong, it’s the fact that he constantly tries to be better and I like the fact that that’s there

image

but just beneath the surface there’s the ripper just itching to get out

image

and some of my favourite Stefan moments is when he’s still Stefan but that ripper anger makes a brief appearance

image

I like tensions and inner-conflict that are earned. Damon doesn’t work for me because his entire problem boils down to: get a handle on your fucking emotions and take responsibility for your own morality. He’s not complex, he’s not even complicated, he’s a man-child. Vampirism is an actual curse for Stefan that he constantly has to battle and Paul portrays those tensions very well:
