The Soft Quiet of an Early Morning
Emmet yawns as he stumbles out of his room, the bright morning sun shining painfully into his eyes. He smiles when he spots Akari sitting on the counter, chowing down on an oran berry. Blue juice stains her cheeks.
“Enjoying yourself?” Emmet asks as he ruffles her hair, laughing as she attempts to bite him in recompense. He probably deserves it. He doesn’t care.
Leaving the girl to her early morning snack, he turns on the stove and begins making a proper breakfast, humming a popular tune as he goes. Akari joins in his melody a moment later, and the two enjoy a peaceful morning.
Breakfast is just about done when Ingo stumbles out of the bedroom, his face still covered in pillow creases. The corners of his lips perk upwards as he spots them.
“Good morning you two.” He rumbles out, coming over to lift his daughter from the counter top. “Up early again I see.“
“Maybe you are up late.” Emmet counters, as Ingo tries to wipe the berry juice from Akari’s face.
“I see no reason to rise early on the weekend.”
“Foolish. Your sleep will suffer. Routine is key.”
“Tsk. And you call me the kill joy.”
Akari barks out a laugh at that, and Ingo’s expression turns soft. It warms Emmet’s heart that despite their tragedies, they can still have moments like these.
“Breakfast is ready!” He calls as he turns off the stove, carting the meal to the table. Ingo and Akari follow, the former releasing his daughter to her personal seat, painted a bright red. He sits himself a moment later, and Emmet begins serving up breakfast.
“Did you sleep well?” Ingo asks Akari as they begin to eat, a bit of worry seeping into his tone. “I know your slumber has been quite poor lately. Was it better today?”
Akari just nods, a jerky motion. She’s not much for conversation.
“Good. I am glad to hear it.”
They chat about the battle subway and recent events over the rest of breakfast, Akari eventually wandering away after she finishes her food. She doesn’t give any warning before she does, but that’s to be expected really. Why would she bother?
“She seems to be settling in well.” Ingo muses as the sounds of joyous pokémon waft in from the other room. “I was worried that Nimbasa would be too much for her, as it is such a departure from what everything she has ever known.”
“She does seem happy.” At least that’s what Emmet assumes. She can be harder to read then even Ingo.
“Yes…. yes she does.”
They listen to the muffled shrieks of playing for a moment longer, before eventually continuing with their morning chores, getting ready for the day. Akari only returns when they set out meals for their pokémon, hanging from her alpha gardivor’s arms.
“Did you have fun?” Ingo asks, as Akari is dropped into his lap, her Pokémon wandering off to eat breakfast.
“Mhmm.” Akari responds, leaning against her father.
“That’s good to hear.”
Emmet smiles at the two, daughter and father enjoying each other’s company. He had never expected Ingo to return with a child, but he’s glad that there was at least one positive thing that came out of his brother’s unexpected departure to Hisui.
Still, Emmet wished that such a blessing could have come without such steep costs. That his brother didn’t have to leave, didn’t have to lose his memories and be hurt so thoroughly. That his niece didn’t have to work to belong, didn’t have to suffer because of some callous god.
That Akari didn’t have to die.
That his niece could still be a bright and talkative teenager, and not the silent zorua she had become.
Still.
Emmet would take what he could get.
Better this then nothing at all.

ABANDONED WIP WEDNESDAY
Welcome back to abandoned WIPS! The part of the show where I show off writing that will almost certainly never come back.
Today I bring you my first ever fan fiction for this fandom, something I wrote because the hyper fixation was killing me and I needed an outlet. I pretty quickly wrote the whole thing off as a lost cause though as I was certain my horrible health wouldn't let me finish it.
How I actually ended up writing fan fiction is a tale and a half, but I'll save that for another day. So for now, I present to you:
Akari Would Like to Say a Swear (but she can't remember any)
This was a pretty straight forward dad!Ingo fic where Akari was found by the Pearl Clan instead of the galaxy team. She was also from earth. (As usual for me honestly lol)
The prologue and first chapter got written out- neither of which have Ingo in them yet. Ah well.
Length: 2,204 words

Prologue
She doesn’t remember falling. She remembers an impact, a freezing feeling as snow burns her skin and obscures her vision, a panic at the sensations far too cold for her bare arms. She remembers struggling, trying to dig herself out of the snowbank that she’s trapped in, but she’s upside down and her head hurts and her arms are freezing and-
She remembers muffled shouting, the tugging on her legs as they pull her out of the snow, confused faces, concerned questions, stranger’s hands helping her up onto her feet but her legs are numb and she-
She wakes up somewhere strange, in a tent of some kind, warmer but not warm enough, the fire not strong enough to fix the chill in her bones. A lady approaches, a stranger she does not recognize, murmuring soft reassurances and helping her drink something that is warm and comforting and she’s so tired and-
She is not the first to forget the fall.
oOOo
It’s two days before she wakes fully, sitting up and looking around herself in confusion. A man sits by the fire, speaking in a language she does not know- but somehow understands. He tells her that he’s glad she’s awake and that he’ll go fetch… someone. He leaves the girl in the tent alone, giving her time to wake more and take in her surroundings. Her clothes have been changed, a pale pink tunic replacing the clothes that she fell in. Said clothes sit folded at the foot of her bed, a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt with a cute cartoon eevee on it.
Eevee is her favorite pokemon. She always goes out of her way to catch it in every game she plays.
The tent flap opens to a gust of cold wind as a teenager steps inside. She’s younger than the girl, maybe 15 or so? But she has the air of someone important, a determination in her eyes that commands respect. A few others follow after the teenager, standing behind her and staring the girl down. It’s an unpleasant feeling. The teenager steps forward and speaks, her language unfamiliar, but the girl understands it anyway.
“I am Iridia, the leader of the Pearl Clan. Two days ago you fell from the space time rift into a snowbank outside of our village. You have been unconscious since we dug you out and you very nearly died.” Her eyes soften at the girl’s baffled gaze. She speaks softer, as if to a child, “You are obviously quite far from home. Your clothes are foreign and are inappropriate for the icelands. While the Pearl Clan is weary of outsiders we are not cold enough to turn away a child in need. Do you recall where you came from?”
‘I’m not a child’ The girl thinks but starts to tell Iridia where she’s from anyway. Or at least tries to. The words are on the tip of her tongue, it’s a place she knows well, she lives there doesn't she? But the answer doesn't come, and it slowly dawns on her that she forgot. She forgot something as important as her home.
Iridia lets out a quiet disappointed sigh and the two adults beside her exchange glances. She softly sits on the bed beside the panicking girl, taking her hands in her own as she looks at her with a soft, sympathetic gaze.
“It’s okay if you don’t remember. I honestly didn’t really expect you to.” She smiles sadly, squeezing the girl’s hands a bit. “Do you at least recall your name?”
That one’s much easier, her name has been with the girl her whole life after all.
“I’m-”
But the word won’t come out, her identity slipping away just as her home had. She actually forgot her name. Something she’d carried her whole life, a word that grounded her to this reality as proof of her existence. Your name is something that is impossible to forget, a thing that distinguishes you, separates you from the people around you. The most important, unforgettable word-
A word that she somehow forgot.
“-frick”
Chapter One
“So your name is Frick?”
The girl balks at that, shaking her head and waving her hands in a bit of a panic.
“What- no- that- uh- frick is a word you use when you’re like, frustrated you know? Like a swear? But not?”
She wasn’t allowed to swear in her house. Her mother would have had her head if any of her younger siblings started mimicking her. Substitutes were tolerated, but only barely.
“It’s a- uh- censored version of… something? I dunno my head feels kinda funky and I’m trying to wrap my head around the fact I can’t remember my own fricking name-” Another pause, Idrida’s looks like she doesn't know wether to laugh or be concerned, “-which definitely isn’t Frick. I don’t know what it is but it’s not that”
Iridia gives her hands another soft squeeze, a small chuckle escaping her.
“Not Frick then I guess. Good to know.” She glances back at the others in the tent before furrowing her brow in concern. “Is there anything you do remember?”
oOOo
She didn’t remember much apparently, and what she could remember wasn’t much use. Her favorite color (Pink) wasn’t very helpful and her age (19) was just plain incorrect.
Iridia asked if she meant that she was nine. She didn’t and was pretty frustrated that the teenager wouldn’t believe her. That is until one of the adults rolled their eyes and pulled out a small handheld mirror. There was a child in the reflection.
Despite that, Iridia encouraged her to keep trying, and that she could stay with the Pearl Clan as long as she needed. The adults finally spoke up then, protesting about taking in more strangers from the rift, especially a child that would be of no use. Iridia asked if they really wanted to send a child out to die, to which the answer was apparently no. She was given a person to stay with, clothes to wear, a promise of security, and most importantly, a name.
Akari
“Of course, you can change it any time.” Iridia said, helping Akari settle into her new lodgings. “If you remember your old name or think of one you like better-”
“Akari is good. Thank you for coming up with it” Akari flashed Iridia her best smile and Iridia blushed a bit at the praise.
“I’m glad you like it. I just kinda suggested the first thing I thought of.”
A freezing chill blew in and both girls turned to the entrance. The owner of the tent Judy, a kindly old woman and Akari’s new roommate/guardian, came in holding a small bundle under her arm. Iridia beamed as the woman handed it to her, before turning back to Akari.
“You’re actually not the first person from the rift we’ve taken in.” Iridia began unwrapping the bundle “About a year ago, a man named Ingo came to our settlement with the same problem you’re having now. His clothes were strange, his words were baffling, and his memories were somewhere he could not find them.”
From the cloth Iridia pulled out a bound journal with a stick of graphite. She smiled as she handed them to Akari.
“He said that journaling helped keep track of the few memories he could recall, I hope it’s the same for you.”
Akari flipped through the blank pages of the journal, fiddling with the graphite stick as she did so. Looking back up at Iridia she asked,
“Did he make it back to his home?”
Iridia shook her head. “Ingo’s still with us, and I’ll admit he hasn’t remembered much… but he’s one of our Wardens now, a very special position only a few can hold.” She smiled fondly. “He has found a place here, and I hope that you will too.”
oOOo
Akari looked down on the village from her perch at the top of the hill. It was probably her favorite spot to write, close enough to the hot springs to feel it’s heat, while also against a cliff face that blocked the south blowing wind. Of course, that didn’t stop the north blowing wind, but she’d take what she could get.
Tracing patterns in the snow with the tip of her boot, she flipped to the front of her journal to review what she had written so far. It was a depressingly short list, full of stupid things like her favorite season (spring) or her opinion on spicy food (tastes bad). Of course, some of them were a bit concerning. Like her age that was off by a decade and-
Pokemon aren’t real
That one really confused her. Akari knew pokemon. She knew what they looked like, their types and names, heck she even had one printed on the shirt she showed up in! But…they all looked wrong, like playing an older video game on a bigger tv and seeing the pixels that you’d never noticed before. There was too much texture and detail and it all felt off. Frankly, it was quite disconcerting at first.
But once she got used to it?
I really like pokemon
The creatures fascinated her. She wasn’t quite sure how she had ever lived without ever seeing one before, (She had also never seen snow before now. Maybe that was related?) but now that she had- she never wanted to go back.
Pokemon were cool. Akari spent most of her free time watching them, watching as they talked, battled, and played with each other. She observed them, taking small notes when they did something interesting and-
I like to draw
That was a fun one to find out. She had been sitting at her spot trying to recall memories as always when one of the hot spring swinub got flipped on it’s back. It squirmed around a bit before it realized it was stuck and it let out a frustrated snort. It was hilarious, and Akari wished she could take a picture. Unfortunately, she was pretty sure pictures didn’t exist and it was another one of those malfunctioning memories of hers.
‘Maybe I could draw it’
Well it wouldn’t hurt to try.
Turns out, she actually kinda knew what she was doing. The picture wasn’t perfect, it was covered in charcoal smudges and the swinub righted itself before she could finish, but it was good enough. Soon her writing journal was more of a sketch pad as it was filled with images of all the local pokemon.
She hummed softly as she flipped through the journals pages, a history of the past two months recorded in charcoal sketches and notes. A swinub shuffled out of the hot spring and over to her, sniffing her and giving her a short whine.
“I don’t have any food for you” Akari said, laughing as it bumped into her hands looking for treats. “Nothing here but me and my thoughts.”
The swinub snorted, turning away from her and down the hill to the village proper, off to beg someone who actually had food. She watched it go, trailing aimlessly among the Pearl Clan. Her eyes drifted over to the other children her age, laughing as they chased each other across the village. She watched friends chat as they did their work, watched mothers yell at their children in exasperation, watched older folks gossip over a shared meal.
Her heart ached, most people were friendly but none wanted to be near her much. Children ran from her giggling while adults gave her side eyes. Iridia was almost a friend, but she was a busy lady who had a very important job to do. Judy was kind, but uninterested in any kind of real relationship with Akari. It had been two months of being alone with her thoughts, nothing but lost memories and the endless snow to keep her company.
She flipped back to the front of her journal, going to the bottom of the list and after a bit of thought wrote,
I wish I had a family again.
Chapter Two- A New Friend
Being a small child with no friends gave Akari a lot of time to explore. Sure she had technically had chores, but Judy really didn’t have the time or patience to teach her how to mend clothes properly. Akari would still give it her best effort, but usually after an hour or so Judy would get tired of her shoddy craftsmanship and shoo her off.
The Pearl Settlement was tucked securely in a small valley, large cliffaces shielding the village from the elements and wild pokemon. The only real way out of the town was to the west, where a small river blocked the settlement entrance from most land-based dangers.
And the dangers were out there. Iridia and then later Judy did their best to stress to Akari how vicious and brutal the wild pokemon were. The Alabaster Icelands was one of the most dangerous places in all of Hisui and for some reason the pearl clan decided that their home had to be there. (Apparently the Diamond Clan lived in a swamp, which was a different brand of insane)
And then this was supposed to be much later in the fic, after a few Ingo chapters at least:
Emmet remembers falling. He remembers finding his brothers pokeballs in the train tunnels, all alone with no Ingo in sight. He remembers the questions from police, the missing posters, frantic searching. He remembers overworking, 14 hour shifts every day in a desperate attempt to cope with the loss. He remembers slowly falling apart as every day ticks on and there’s no sign of his twin no matter where he searches. He remembers, and he doubts he will ever forget.
ABANDONED WIP WEDNESDAY
Context for this one: Another Dad!Ingo fic that didn't pan out. Written quite early on, probably right after Touch of Love. Was supposed to focus on an adult researcher Akari from earth who got turned into a child and was given the ability to understand everyone but not speak the language. Ingo meets her and teaches her sign. (You can see that I repurposed this idea for Feral in Hisui)
This is just the prologue so Ingo isn't here yet unfortunately. Bummer.
No one understands Akari (Maybe Ingo can fix that)

Volo had made a ****ing mess. Honestly, arceus looks away for one second and next thing it knows someone has cracked a hole in the sky. Go figure. It hoped that the problem would fix itself, that one of its children or the people of the land would shape up and fix the freaking sky hole that loomed over its temple. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The hole quickly went from an inconvenience to a problem when things started falling through it. Small things Arceus could excuse, (some bathroom slippers, a microwave, half of a billboard that thankfully fell into the ocean) but when a *person* fell through, it knew that this was a problem that needed divine intervention.
And so it was time to find a chosen.
If Arceus was going to do this, it might as well go all the way. Honestly, Volo’s shenanigans had pushed Hisui’s Pokémon/human cohabitation back a few decades. Arceus claimed to be unbiased but hisui was definitely its favorite region, and having it lag behind its peers in development because of one (1) stupid fanatic, well, it really grinded arceus’s gears. So okay, Arceus needed someone to fix the hole in the sky AND make the locals more friendly with the local wildlife. Now how to do that? Consulting with the other legendaries of its realm (as well as a couple of other arceus’s of other realms), the best solution it came up with was a Pokédex. Hard to fear what you understand you know? Thankfully, a Pokédex was already underway, an effort spearheaded by those outsiders that recently invaded. Unfortunately, the outsiders are stupid and even more afraid of Pokémon then Aceus’s own people (and that was saying something) They were getting nowhere fast and certainly didn’t have the skills required to fix the sky. The man from the future probably could, but while Arceus wasn’t paying attention he had already settled with the pearl clan and become a warden to one of it’s blessed nobles. Besides, he was weird and intimidating, and no one would find comfort in his constant scowl and train metaphors. So! Arceus would need to bring in a chosen from outside its realm. Unfortunately, that was easier said then done, and Arceus was finding that a perfect human might be impossible to locate. So Arceus would make its own. First, the body. Children always made for good chosens, they were easily underestimated and had vigor and energy that an adult simply couldn’t keep up with. It needed to not stick out too much, an appearance that could match any child of the era. Of course, it needed to be quite sturdy as well, a hole in the sky is not an easy fix after all! Next was the soul, probably the hardest part. Arceus could try to make one from scratch, but that was a pain and it would have no idea if it made a good one until the soul had run around for a couple of human years. Time was of no consequence to Arceus, but it was very important to its people. So Arceus would have to steal a soul. It wanted a curious one, one with the nack for research and a loving heart. They couldn’t be afraid of Pokémon, but they also couldn’t be used to them. Pokémon needed to be an enigma that the soul would be desperate to solve. So Arceus searched through other worlds, snatching the soul of a dying girl on her last breath. A biology student, one who loved animals and had a tendency to solve problems that no one asked her too. She was a liiiiiitle too old, (nearly 24) but didn’t all humans want to be younger? She probably wouldn’t mind losing a couple years.
Gently placing the soul in the newly formed body, Arceus found that there were still a few snags in its plans. First off, it seemed that the new soul was not happy to lose a few years and was also demanding to be sent back to the lousy world Arceus had stolen her from. That wouldn’t do. Taking a page from the accidental skyfaller, Arceus wiped a good chunk of her memories. It left the important stuff; science, math, basic life skills, but any personal memories were deemed unimportant and were deleted from existence. Speaking of basic life skills, her native language would be useless now. Feeling quite generous, Arceus granted her the ability to understand all languages as if they were her own. It briefly considered granting her the ability to speak said languages but ended up dismissing that thought. It wanted to speed up progress, not skip years of scientific discovery because the biology student wanted electric lights. And so with a couple more skills (good aim, excellent reflexes, etc) and a communication device/map that arceus could send instructions through, Arceus gently deposited its chosen onto the land of hisui.
And that was how Akari’s tumultuous life of bottled words began.
👀 Question, do you have any refs of Akari in the FaeU?
Yeah! Kinda. Depends on what you mean by refs lol. I’ve drawn her twice:
And here’s the in game outfit I gave her (under the cut because tumblr is weird about images) (modeled by my personal avatar lol)
But if you’re asking for something more in line with a “traditional” reference sheet I unfortunately don’t make those lol. (Too much drawing for my slow hands to do) If you have any specific questions tho I’m happy to answer!

Akari Befriends an Alpha Ralts (The Rest is History)
Length: 1,279 words
Rating: G
Also, I think something is automatically changing all of my * markers into the proper quotations? Because I sure ain't
An Alpha’s duty is to protect their pack, and ralts took that duty very seriously. Sure, some could argue the kirlia were stronger or that a species that could teleport at the drop of a hat didn’t need protecting, but they were wrong. Or at least, that’s what she tried to tell herself every time she managed to drive off another troublesome ghastly. Usually just running in their general direction screaming was good enough, most Pokémon with any sense knew to stay away from an angry alpha like her. Even if she was all bark and no bite. And that was the kicker wasn’t it? She was an alpha! A protector! But if it came down to it, she wouldn’t be able to protect anyone, not even herself.
A human started invading her territory. This wasn’t unheard of, ralts had to scare off one or two blue humans every few months but this one, she was stubborn. And armed. Every day she would sit at the edge of the ruins with a stupid looking fire type at her side, doing… something. Not that it mattered! This was ralts’ territory! Did this human really think she could just, wander in here and disturb the peace?! Not on her watch! So she charged the small human, and scared it off. But it kept coming back. Everyday she would find the same stupid human in the same stupid spot and every day she would scare it off. It didn’t even battle her, seeming perfectly content to respect her authority. Except for the fact she continued to come back.
An alpha protected. They protected their pack and land, making sure everyone was safe and fed, happy and healthy. It was what alphas were for, the purpose the almighty sinnoh had given them. So if an alpha couldn’t protect… what was their purpose? It was a question that haunted ralts daily. She was an alpha, the alpha of the shrouded ruins, the sinnoh assigned protector of her people… yet no one needed her protection. It wasn’t that there were no threats, (the local gastly could be quite a hassle if they set out to be) but that any threat could easily be teleported away from. And every ralts could teleport. Maybe not the hatchlings, sure, but their mother could simply bundle them in her arms and teleport them herself. When danger struck, it was almost always better just to leave then it was to fight.
[There's no connecting sentence, sorry]
“Alpha, you need to cut this out. It’s getting ridiculous.” Ralts paused in her berry picking, turning to face Mud. Rock and Sticks were there too- all three tiny ralts half of her size. “I’m not sure what you’re talking about” She did of course, know what they were talking about, but she really didn’t feel like having this conversation again. “The human hatchling Alpha. You need to stop harassing her” “Yeah!” Sticks chimed in, waving her namesake branch in Ralts’ face “The human girl is really nice! But you keep scaring her off! Stop that!” Batting the piece of wood away, she leveled the three with her best glare “The human is not ‘nice’, she is dangerous! Do you not remember what happened to Fern and Smelly?!” “Are you talking about their nice vacation to the noisy clan?” Mud was speaking again, his arms folded as he glared right back “Might I remind you that Fern came back just fine and Smelly wanted to stay.” “Smelly is a stupid idiot and Fern just got lucky. I’m not taking the risk of it happening again!” Rock interrupted before Mud could refute, waving a half eaten berry in the air. “Human bring berries! Berries good!” “She’s just trying to lower your guard! Those berries could be traps!!” “That is-“ “BERRIES GOOD!” “YOU DON’T KNOW THAT!” “You stupid-!“ “Lets all calm down” A calm mind rippled through the group, draining the anger from both sides. Ralts threw a stink eye at Mud for that, but didn’t comment. Stupid idiot should have evolved ages ago. “Look, Alpha. I know you have the best of intentions, but the truth of the matter is that we don’t need your protection. We are all perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, especially from a friendly human hatchling” “But alphas-“ “I could beat you in a battle and you know it.” A heavy silence fell over the group, Mud finally saying what they had been dancing around this whole time. Forget the kirlias, she wasn’t even the strongest ralts. “Fine. I can see when I’m not wanted.” Grabbing her berries she stormed off in a huff. No one called after her
oOo
The human was back again. As promised, Ralts didn’t chase her away, instead opting to stay nearby and keep a close eye on her. They didn’t say she couldn’t watch. ’What? Don’t feel like screaming today? Or did you- like, get tired of bothering me every day?’ The human watched Ralts wearily, leaning away from her and clutching her things close. “Don’t be silly. I was simply outvoted by the others. That doesn’t mean I’m not going to keep a close eye on you though.” ’uh huh sure. Don’t know what you said but it sure sounded dismissive’ Shrugging, she turned away, hunching back over her… human thing. Her fire type perked up next to her, nuzzling it’s face into her side. “Dontcha worry Akari! I can take ‘er if we need ta!” Ralts rolled her eyes, but she didn’t challenge it, instead opting to practice her psychokinesis as she waited. It was… quite boring. Eventually, Ralts couldn’t stand it anymore and marched over to the hatchling. ’Do you, uh, need something?’ Ralts pointed at her… white leaf thing? “What are you doing?” She looked confused (stupid humans who couldn’t speak pokè), glancing up at Ralts and back down at her lap, before she seemed to figure it out. ’Oh! Did you want to see my drawings?‘ She held her leaf thing out for Ralts to take and- It was covered in little ralts’! Little tiny ralts dancing, laughing, and eating in all sorts of poses on the white leaf. She could recognize most of them too; Rock stacking pebbles, Sticks directing singalongs, Mud having no respect for fur maintenance… And there were more leaves under the first! Dozens of leaves filled with pictures of her pack, and other Pokémon in the area. But on the fifth leaf or so… ’Oh, heh. You uh, found your page’ And there was Ralts! An entire page filled with just her! And she looked strong! Strong and scary and absolutely beautiful! “Is this what you’ve been doing this whole time?” Unsurprisingly, Akari didn’t seem to understand the question. The fire type did though “Yessirie! She really fancies you fancy folk. Can’t say I get it myself but whatever makes ‘er ‘appy” So she came back because she admired them? That was….. really charming actually. “Humans can’t use moves can they” “Errrr no? Not that I’ve seen” She nodded and gave Akari her leaf stack back, looking her and the fire type up and down. “So she needs protection. Otherwise she’ll die out here.” “Yeah? I guess? That’s why I’m ‘ere” Well if her pack didn’t need her then- “That settles it. There’s no protection better then an alpha’s protection after all” Waltzing over, she sat next to Akari, no longer a threat but instead her charge. “Wha- no! you can’t just steal my job!” “Too late!”
Cinders could complain all he wanted, but she wasn’t changing her mind. She had found the best human in the world, and she wasn’t letting go.

PREVIOUSLY ON- HEROES AND VILLAINS:
*Tragedy struck early last year when famed hero Chandelure perished in a battle against the dastardly Mirror Coat. No body was recovered, but according to the Hero Commission and Chandelure’s former partner and twin brother Eelektross he was all but guaranteed dead.
Yet, not all was as it seemed, as mere months later a new villain arose- one sporting similar powers and going by the name of Smokestack. This outraged Eelektross, as to him it was clear that this was his brother’s true killer- one that had murdered him and stolen his powers for himself. Eelektross declared war on the villain, and swore that he would not rest until his twin was avenged.
That is, until one fateful confrontation let Eelktross see under Smokestack’s mask.
Because what lie under that mask was no heartless killer, but instead Nobori- a scarred amnesiac who emerged from the burning rubble of Chandelure’s battle as nothing but a ghost of a man. A man who was forced to build himself from the ground up, relying on the community who took him in, and doing his best to pay them back for their generosity. And considering that hero skirmishes are the thing that hurt his community the most, his best plan of action was clear.
Now Eelektross, (or Emmet as he is known by in his civilian life) must confront the difficult truth that the world isn’t as black and white as he thought. That villains could be good people, heroes could be bad people, and that he’s been fighting his brother to the death for months now.
But more then that- he just wants to be with his brother again.
Will Emmet manage to confess to being Eeletross? Will Ingo accept such a thing if he did? And will the commission figure out what really happened to Chandelure? Find out in todays episode of…* HEROES AND VILLAINS!
Ingo is alive.
Ingo is alive! Messed up situation aside, that’s the most important part.
Sure, they’re technically mortal enemies at the moment, and sure he’ll probably drop Emmet like a hot sack of coals when he realizes he’s Eelektross, but still. Even if he finds out, (when he finds out, because Emmet can’t keep this secret forever) even if he does disown Emmet, at least he’ll be alive. Alive and happy and mostly safe. ….as safe as an enemy of the law can be.
But whatever! Ingo’s back from the dead and Emmet doesn’t want to dwell on the inevitability of once again losing the most important person in the world to him. He can deal with that later. Right now he’d rather spend whatever time he can have with his brother.
….after he gets back from the bathroom.
Playing with his fingers idly, Emmet really wished Ingo would hurry up so he didn’t have to be alone with his own thoughts. ….but he didn’t want to rush his brother or anything- they’d been talking for hours at that point and taking a bodily break was fine and definitely not an issue. Emmet’s head was just a bad place to be at the moment.
A scrabbling sound at the window caught Emmet’s attention, a humanoid shape huddled behind the curtains. He jumped to his feet as the window slammed open, curtains pushed aside as-
As a teenager rolled into the room.
Or what Emmet assumed to be a teenager. It was a bit hard to tell, as she immediately turned around to close the window behind her- but teenager was Emmet’s best guess. She was a bit on the shorter side with long black hair and a dirty white t-shirt, and when she turned back around Emmet was able to make out large gray eyes. Eyes that grew wider at the sight of him.
“Who-“ “TRAITOR!!” She shouted, before Emmet could get more then a word out. “I HAVE BEEN BETRAYED! FORSAKEN!! FATHER NO LONGER LOVES ME!!!” Dramatically, she crumpled on the ground, limbs splayed and the back of her hand to her forehead.
“Hello to you too Akari.” Ingo quipped from behind Emmet, obviously just coming back from the bathroom. “Why am I a traitor exactly?” “You know what you did!” She shouted, sitting up suddenly- and then pausing when she caught sight of of both Emmet and Ingo. “….ooooor not. When’d you get a clone?” Getting to her feet, she scampered over to Emmet and began to examine him thoroughly, making him feel a bit like a bug. Ingo pulled her back. “This is Emmet!” He told her, a his lips curling up into a little kitty smile. “He is my twin!” (He looked so happy saying that) “Wait really?” ‘Akari’ looked skeptical, and Ingo had to pull her back again before she could enter Emmet’s private space again. “‘Cause I thought you got another illusionist behind my back and I was not going to stand for it.”
“I am Emmet. Not an illusion.” He wished she would stop staring at him. “Who are you?” “Oh my apologies! This is-“ “I am Akari No-Last-Name-Given! Daughter of Nobori No-Last-Name-Given!” She punctuated every word with a dramatic punch or pose, as if she was a cartoon superhero. “I might look small but I’m stronger then you and will beat you up if you hurt my dad!!!” Dramatically, she ended her introduction in some kind of off brand ninja pose- one where she was obviously threatening Emmet.
Ingo looked torn between touched and embarrassed out of his mind. “Akari-“ “Because you coming out of nowhere is super duper sus and Dad is a complete doormat!” “Akari!!” “So if you think I’m gonna just accept you as my unc-“ She let out a high pitched squeal as Ingo grabbed her around the middle, throwing her over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry. “Apologies for Akari! She means no harm- she is simply a bit spirited.” “I DO MEAN HARM!!” Akari kicked desperately in an attempt to get free, but Ingo wasn’t budging.
“….You adopted a kid?” Emmet finally managed, watching his brother wrestle with the strange teenager with obvious fondness. “Ah, well, technically she adopted me but-“ “We’re both amnesiacs with superpowers!!! No one can prove we AREN’T related!!!” “I can.” The teen froze for a moment, obviously processing Emmet’s statement, before- “DANG IT!” And Ingo laughed, a loud mighty sound that Emmet missed. He couldn’t help but feel jealous that this strange teenager managed to coax it out of him, that she got to be Ingo’s family while Emmet was still a stranger. …But the thought was stuffed down almost as soon as he thought it. His jealously was stupid and petty, and not earned in the slightest. If he wanted to be Ingo’s family again he needed to work on it- and being jealous of Ingo’s kid wouldn’t help him get back in his brother’s good graces. If Ingo would even allow him to.
“Alright Akari, Emmet and I still have things to discuss. Why don’t you head back home and you can interrogate him another day?” Plopping Akari back onto the floor, Ingo paused for a moment- before giving Emmet a searching look. “…Assuming you would like to return?” “Yes!” Emmet did his best to keep the desperation off of his face. “Yes I would like that verrrrrry much.” “Excellent!” Ingo clapped his hand together in obvious joy. “Now then Akari, if you will please excuse us…” “Yeah yeah whatever.” With a twirl and flourish Akari began walking backwards to the door, flashing Emmet the ‘keeping my eyes on you’ hand gesture. “Watch yourself strange doppelgänger! I ain’t one to be messed with!” And with that ominous statement she bolted out the door.
“….spirited kid.” “Indeed.” Ingo smiled slightly with his eyes, before turning and gesturing back to the couch. “Would you like to continue our earlier conversation? Or would a change of tracks be preferable?” “Please continue.” Hesitantly, Emmet took Ingo’s hand and dragged him back to the couch. “The breaking system? Yes?” “Ah yes, that was it! So as I was saying…”
oOo
Apparently, despite being Ingo’s kid, Akari didn’t actually live with Ingo. She was technically under the care of some other apartment resident, but had the tendency to climb the fire escape and hang out in Ingo’s apartment. Ingo himself didn’t seem to do much actual parenting, but from the few times Emmet saw the two interact it was quite obvious they were close.
“Akari has amnesia as well.” Ingo explained one evening, as the two worked together to cook dinner. (Emmet wasn’t a cook by any means, but Ingo had invited to show him the ropes- and Emmet would never turn down an opportunity to hang out with his brother) “She seemed to see me as a sort of… kindred spirit, and declared herself my daughter.” “She has good taste.” Emmet joked, and Ingo turned away in embarrassment. “I- I would not say that. I am not-“ He shook his head. “It is… quite lonely living without memories. As far as you know you have no friends or family, and are alone in the world.” There was a pause as Ingo gathered his thoughts, the muffled audio of a neighbor’s radio being the only real sounds left. “Meeting you has been… wonderful- like a soothing balm on my soul. You fill a part of me I thought would never be full, and I cannot thank you enough for that.” He smiled slightly with his eyes, and Emmet did his best not to cry. “I believe Akari’s adoption of me was an attempt to fix a similar issue.”
Emmet, well Emmet couldn’t really imagine that. He had been destroyed when he lost Ingo- but at least he knew what he was missing. Ingo and Akari hadn’t had that luxury. “I am glad then. That you found each other.” He fidgeted slightly. “And I am- being with you is also-“ “I’M BACK!” Akari’s cry interrupted Emmet’s stuttered admission, leaving the man cursing his incompetence with words.
“Welcome back Akari!” Ingo called back, bumping lightly into Emmet’s shoulder with an apologetic look. “Emmet and I are almost finished cooking dinner, would you like to join us?” “Eh depends. What’re you making?” Akari shucked off her shoes and backpack as she stumbled into the kitchen area- making sure to give Emmet a distrustful look. “Stir fry.” Batting Akari’s hand away from the vegetables, Ingo does his best to steer her out of the kitchen. “You will need to wash your hands first though. The fire escape is filthy.” “Spoilsport.” She stuck her tongue out at him but did what he said anyway, running out of the room with her arms held out behind her back.
Dinner was in fact almost done, and in no time at all the three of them were seated together at a tiny table. The food was delicious, and Emmet was happy to spend time with his brother- but he wouldn’t deny that Akari’s glaring spoiled the atmosphere slightly. “Be nice.” Ingo scolded gently, tapping the side of her bowl with his chopsticks. “What?? I haven’t said anything!” “Yes, but you are glaring with the heat of a boiler engine on a steam train.” He gave her a firm look. “And as I happen to quite enjoy his company, I would rather you refrained from scaring him off.” “He’s still suspicious.” She grumbled quietly as she finally looked away, pulling her bowl up to her face and glaring at her noodles instead.
Emmet really reeeeeeeally wanted to fire back that he isn’t suspicious, and that he’s here for perfectly benign reasons…. but he can’t. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter that he wishes Ingo no ill will- he’s still Eelektross and he’s still keeping that secret. In some ways she’s right to suspect him.
So he doesn’t fire back, instead asking Ingo about work, all while ignoring the guilt that runs down his spine when Akari shoots him another glare.
He deserves it anyway.

Anyway, this is the outline of the entire fic overall, as well as a scene from later on in the narrative!
Heroes and Villains- Ingo is a Dad Now (Part 2)
Length: 2,132 words
Rating: G
No archive warnings apply
Akari has light powers. (Get it? Light? I’m hilarious) This is a VERY powerful ability as you can do things like lasers and their ilk- but also illusions and invisibility. She can manipulate light which means she can make you see what she wants you to see. The commission obviously really wants her abilities, but she is a stubborn authority defying teenager. With amnesia. Her first memories are waking up in the commission building with them being oh so worried about her :(( and her catching their bad vibes immediately. She plays along though, before eventually breaking out and running away. She ends up being taken in by the (Pearl clan equivalent, I forgot what it was called lol) a few weeks after Ingo and immediately reverse adopts him due to the shared amnesia. Her claim to fame is “well he could be my dad. We don’t have any proof either way >:))” (they don’t particularly look alike) She also super wants to be a villain- but Drayden’s organization is not letting the teenager fight for them. (Except in very specific situations where she is in no danger they just need her illusionary abilities- and Ingo is there to make sure she doesn’t run off to punch someone)
the main plot line is (humorously) her relationship with Emmet. She’s able to easily connect the dots about him being Eeletross and is very not pleased with having a hero that can rat her out hanging around. Of course, they end up getting along just fine, especially because Emmet thinks she’s just paranoid and there’s no way the commission is after her
and then she goes missing
Ingo is besides himself, praying desperately that it isn’t the commission- but as time passes it becomes increasingly obvious that that’s what happened. Emmet is still in denial of course, and in his free time is looking for the devious criminal that stole his niece away (part of him is tempted to report the crime to the commission in order to get more help looking for her- but he promised, he’s not gunna break that promise) Something that makes this even sadder is that Akari had confessed to Emmet at one point that it was an inevitably. She’s knows that she can’t hide forever, that the commission will find her and take her away eventually- so she’s just enjoying the time she has now before it’s all taken away from her.
And then, months after Akari goes missing, Emmet is assigned to help a new recruit with physical training. It’s Akari.
Emmet finds a way to pull her aside and goes “what are you doing here??? Ingo’s worried sick! I thought you hated it here!” But Akari just kinda looks at him and is like “how do you know I don’t like the commission!?! Are you a mind reader??? And who’s Ingo?”
and then Emmet gets to have a crisis because a) she was right all along and b) she got her memory wiped again
Turns out that this is just a thing that happens with Akari!! She’s very hard to manipulate the old fashion way so they’ve had to resort to memory wipes! If she was anyone else they would declare someone as difficult as her just not worth it- but Akari is powerful. Her illusions are much too useful to just toss aside- so they keep going at her, locking her up under tighter and tighter security every time she escapes, becoming increasingly frustrated that despite the fact she has literally no memories that they cannot erase her subconscious feelings about the commission… which is that she very much does not like or trust them. They just need to find a way to break her, and then they will have all of this power at their disposal. It might take a while but they can do it. They’re quite patient after all.
Pen: Question: does Akari meet Ingo or smokestack first?
Not sure! Since this is from Emmet’s POV that stuff isn’t really important? He just finds his amnesiac brother and the next day sees a teenager crawling through the window via fire escape
I think she just showed up one day, amnesiac teenager on the run who got taken in- and then immediately imprinted on Ingo
Like, Calaba or something was supposed to take care of her but she declared Ingo is her dad now actually and they all have to just. Roll with that.
Other fun things to consider:
Emmet having no idea how to tell his brother that he found Akari in the hero commission
Emmet breaking Akari out and then having Akari just casually let slip to her dad that she’s so glad her uncle is a spy that could break her out
they actually break Akari
Vision is just our eyes taking in light bouncing off of stuff, so if you could bend that to your will….
This isn’t just a hyper realistic illusion that can affect one person- she can make illusions that everyone sees and no one can tell the difference
Her power is terrifying and the commission needs it
unlike most of my AU’s she’s a legit teenager here Complete with the teenage invincibility concept backed up by the fact that she’s super powerful, has amnesia, and is living the yolo life because she thinks she could be spirited away any minute
No one lets her be a super villain so she does that on her own. She was climbing in through the window because that’s just ‘how she is’. When she’s comfortable she has zero filter, self preservation instincts, or craps to give. (This terrifies Ingo)
It’s not like she goes to public school either- she can’t. She’s completely homeschooled and while she does well at that…. gestures she has free time
Everything she does is underlined with the knowledge that she is constantly minutes away from “death” (an erasure of personality and memories) so it’s not worth wasting time
She grows attached quickly but is extremely flighty, constantly putting on a don’t care attitude. she’s terrified, but what else is she supposed to do? Nothing she does really matters in the long run- the conclusion is still the same
I like the thought that she was an orphan kid. Ran away from every orphan program she was ever in and lived on the streets. Tuning her powers on her own. It’s why she’s got wandering feet even when she has a home (plus, being as hardened to societal programs makes her horrid at listening to orders)
Akari initially suggested that Ingo was her dad as a joke basically. She wanted to hang out with him more and that was the excuse she gave. She didn’t expect him to actually start acting like her dad and is high key terrified about how attached to him she is at this point
And, as promised, the small scene:
(Set after Ingo has met up with Eelektross and Akari several times in secret during Akari's on the field commission training)
The apartment is as silent as it gets when Ingo sits at the kitchen table, head in his hands and sigh on his lips. Melli had gone over to a friends place for the evening and Ingo didn’t have any plans that could delay this… conversation any further.
A conversation with himself. One that he has been putting of for quite a while.
Letting out a groan, Ingo slumps so his head is resting in his arms, the darkness helping him confront the mental beast head on.
No use putting it off any longer.
He starts with the facts, lining them up mentally like a legion of toy soldiers. Heroes are bad. Akari is a hero. Akari isn’t made bad by the fact the commission took her in- she’s still Akari and he still loves her.
Which means…. Some heroes can technically be good.
Ingo groans again as he lets his head drop all the way to the wooden table. He’s barely four facts in and he’s already completely over this “conversation” ….but it needs to be done, and Ingo doesn’t trust himself to try again if he aborts now.
Where was he? Oh right.
Some heroes can technically be good.
Right that…. He shifts tracks.
Eelektross hates him for killing his brother.
Honestly, Ingo can’t even blame him for his anger. If some hero came along and murdered Emmet, Ingo is fairly certain he would react the same way.
Elektross no longer thinks he killed his brother.
Which is because- No, not yet. Ingo doesn’t want to touch that one yet.
Elektross no longer hates him, and apologized for accusing him of murder.
Which is… much more then Ingo was ever expecting really. But more baffling-
Elektross has been taking care of Akari and taking her to see him.
Why?? How did he even know Akari was his child in the first place?? According to Akari that was the first thing he said to her- asking her what was she doing there and that telling her that her dad was worried. But not many people knew about Akari in the first place- or at least not in relation to him. The only real people who would know Akari would be the other Hisui residents and-
Nope. Backtrack.
Electross had been taking care of Akari and had been going behind the commissions back in order to let Ingo see her. Some heroes can technically be good. Elektross is technically a good guy.
Oh great, now Ingo feels nauseous. Squeezing his eyes shut eyes even harder, he try’s to get his roiling gut to accept the conclusion he’s come to.
But it’s true! Elektross has proven himself trustworthy time and time again- from the aforementioned Akari watching to just the fact that he HAS to know Ingo’s secret identity in order to know that he’s Akari’s father…… and Ingo hasn’t had the commission knocking on his doors. Yet another part of his mind whispers- but he has no idea what eelektross would gain by waiting, so he puts that thought to the side as well.
Which leads him back to…. Elektross knows chandelure is alive. Elektross knows Ingo couldn’t have killed chandelure because he saw his face. Elektross recognized Ingo. Elektross must have known Ingo before his memory loss.
Oh he hates where this is going. Full of nervous energy, Ingo begins to pace around the kitchen, anxiously biting at the skin around his fingernails.
Elektross- No. Reroute.
Ingo did not steal chandelure’s powers- Emmet says he has always had them. Chandelure’s powers are extremely similar to Ingo’s. Ingo appeared shortly after-
Nope nope nope nope. Ingo falls into a crouch as he begins to clutch his forearms, desperately holding back his frantic breathing. He needs to- He needs-
There’s Lichtenberg scars on his arms. Emmet hadn’t wanted to talk about those.
Ingo finds this route a bit easier to take, his breathing evening out as he releases his death grip on his arms.
Emmet found him shortly after elektross saw his face. Emmet wasn’t surprised by the burn scar.
…Emmet knew Akari was his daughter.
Aaaaaand he was back to pacing, hands flapping in an attempt to rid himself of anxious energy. It wasn’t working.
Emmet was- Ingo was-
Emmet was a good person, which is why he couldn’t be a hero. ….but heroes can technically be good. Technically. Especially if- their parents died when they were pretty young right? So hypothetically…
Ugh no this wasn’t working either. How was he supposed to….
Gray zones. Right. Some half remembered psychological thing that Ingo had no idea where he learned- maybe before the amnesia? Yes so, gray zones. Not everything is black and white. People can change. People can be good people but make bad mistakes. People can be-
Ingo is chandelure. Heroes are bad and if Ingo was a hero then that means Ingo is bad and-
He rushes to the bathroom to throw up, barely having enough time to pull up the toilet lid before puking his guts out. He’s pretty sure he’s crying.
But if Ingo is chandelure that means that-
Emmet is Elektross.
Emmet’s been taking care of his daughter for him.
Something in Ingo gives as he slumps in place, the agony of the previous reveal buried in the wake of the sheer relief he feels at the moment. Because Emmet is a good person who loves Ingo and Akari- and he will take care of her and help get her home.
And that’s more important then anything else isn’t it?
The rest of the night was spent in and out of a long running panic attack over the chandelure thing- but by the time the sun had risen Ingo had mostly made peace with himself. Mostly.
THIS IS THE TIME POLICE!
