There’s a couple of things I would’ve done differently but overall I’m pretty happy with it.

One of the most iconic lines of Oxenfree straight out of ???’s metaphorical mouth. But what does it mean? Why is Alex addressed so?

Bob tail, in which most of us are familiar from one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. A bob tail is an animal’s tail cut short, which can look like a pony tail. Being first addressed by outward appearance makes sense.

Shave tail, sounds similar but is a little different. During the times of the US Calvary, army mule tails were shaved when they were brand new and unbroken. They still needed to be trained, so it became a disparaging slang term for a second lieutenant or a newly commissioned officer. This term works in both sense for Alex; in a way, she is recruited to help these former officers and military people, and she is treated as a “beast of burden” since Alex is essentially meant to be a vessel for their souls to escape.

Sleepy. Time. Gal. The most memorable and first nickname they used for Alex once she says hi. The term is actually the title of a song from the 1920s and its relevance because clear once you glean its message. Lyrics start at about the 1:57 timestamp if the embed doesn’t work correctly. The narrative of the song’s lyrics is basically that the singer’s assumed partner is a girl who is what some could call “wild”, a party girl of her time. The Sleepy Time Gal is prone to staying up all night and turning day into night, but the singer is urging her to sleep. The signer wants to keep her in, almost like playing house. In the original context of the song it is to be domestic in a relationship. But as the teens on the Edwards Island are just sort of puppets that the Sunken want, it’s apt. The characters of Oxenfree have until dawn before their souls are doomed as a possessed Clarissa tells us. The Sunken both want Alex to dance the night away and stay to be theirs. Like horror movies use innocuous songs to convey something foreboding and sinister, the use of the nickname Sleepy Time Gal was always just as chilling.
