I had no idea there was an Alex Rider show. I’m about halfway through season 1 and love it. When I tell you I devoured those books as a kid I mean it. (Percy Jackson who?? Just kidding I liked those too) And they’ve made changes, but that’s a given considering they were written in the early 2000’s and they can’t keep things the same since it’s set in modern day, but even the most obvious changes (Yassen coming in early, more focus on Ian’s death and on side characters etc) are interesting. But honestly I really really love it, and the actor they chose for Alex is wonderful.
I KNEW Tom making that video was a bad idea oh my God, literally whyyyyy. Why would anyone on earth start making a video on someone being a spy after they've just discovered that they are in fact, a spy, and about to go on a super secret mission.
I am glad they didn't cut off his thumb tho.
Something I really enjoy about the Alex Rider series is that it’s not shy about showing Alex’s vulnerability.
Reminder that I haven’t read the books since I was a child and have forgotten a lot, but I’m pretty sure in those Alex was usually portrayed as the typical teenage boy protagonist. He was snarky/sarcastic, gave the bad guys henchmen nicknames, and for the most part he really worked alone. I’m almost finished season 2, but a difference I noticed is that he hasn’t got his all the really cool spy gear (that I was always envious of) he would usually be given at the beginning of missions, and when he was in a bad situation he could only rely on himself to get him out of it. But in the show they took those away, and due to that he really has to rely on people.
Both in season 1 and now in 2 he couldn’t have made it without Kyra (when he gets captured/caught and strapped to a table, then when he impersonates K7 and she has to guide him out) and its obvious that his relationship with Tom (Jack too, but I really think Tom’s a big one here) is really special to him, not just because he’s able to think outside the box (like when Alex wanted to just wait all day for the journalist guy and Tom was all ‘i’ll just set off the alarm and evacuate the building) but also because he’s his best friend and makes him laugh/smile. Alex smiles so much at Tom’s antics and I really love the show for choosing to maintain that this is a teenage boy who needs his friends to keep him grounded.
And when he’s all convinced that Yassen is in the area he tells everyone!! Jack, Tom, even Sabina! (who really he should’ve at least tried to keep the whole spy thing a secret from i feel like come on, Alex, please) He jumps out in situations when he should stay hidden! He is not secretive when it comes to those he loves! And you can see that he wants and needs them to believe him. From what I remember, book Alex was more ‘ooh! Cool teenage spy, beating up all the bad guys and saving the world cuz Blunt won’t let him go!’ (Or maybe not, I’ll reread them someday) but this Alex cares!! This version of Alex cared so much about what happened to his uncle Ian, he cared so much that his evil clone was hurting Tom and ran as fast as he could to get to them, he cares so much about Kyra he went on a drugged up rant about how she’s special and he wouldn’t fall for fake Kyra’s tricks again. He cares so much about Sabina and her dad.
TV! Alex I will always love you.
Also TV! Blunt is much less imposing than his book counterpart. He’s still the big boss and scary (that Friend dude who played Alex’s dad is evidence enough of that) but in the show he’s got Ben and Ms. Jones who very obviously don’t agree with him, so they try to help Alex out secretly, and an Alex who’s like ‘you’re ridiculous and I’m gonna do what I have to.’

Alex looks so freaking stressed in season 3. Eye bags up the wazoo. I've never seen someone embody the spirit of a miserable, angry, vengeful wide-eyed wet dog as he does as he's being interrogated by Blunt. I'm positively in love
One thing I really do love in the Alex Rider TV adaption, both in season 1 and now in season 2 is the constant subtle hints that Alex is actually not your usual kid, despite still being very early in his character arc.
And I’m not talking about the flashy parkour sequences or fight scenes. I mean the offhand comment that Alex knows about the law, or is extremely involved in multiple outdoor activities. His character is shown to have an intelligence and ambition above his peers, be proficient with a gun and competent in tasks that while as simple as pitching a tent, highlight he’s already a class above his own and most likely has extensive knowledge on other useful topics too.
While it’s nice to see him show off a little in the bigger scenes and get a glimpse of the spy extraordinaire to come, it’s also brilliant to see the impact of Alex’s upbringing with Ian included frequently in seemingly mundane scenes and is something I’ve enjoyed picking up on.
WHEN DID SEASON 3 COME OUT AND WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME
I love how while only 3 series into Alex Rider TV we really see the jaded, angry Alex we get by the end of the entire book series. The realities of a child spy are much more obvious in the show and something I really enjoy seeing explored
