Altar Ideas - Tumblr Posts
Interesting altar ideas:
1.Decorate the walls with pictures.
These could be pictures of your deities, images that make you feel witchy, pictures that remind you of your craft, pictures of your favorite witchy characters or just pictures that make you feel calm.
2.Make a playlist to listen to at your altar.
This one is pretty fun, personally I love music so making an altar playlist will hopefully help me spend more time there.Remember to pick songs you really like and are good for just sitting at your altar, charging items, spells and just general witch stuff. This is also great for traveling witchcraft.
3.Add an item that you like.
It could be your childhood stuffed bear or a bracelet that you got for Valentines day.Adding an item that you like will help connect you to your altar.
4.Put all your altar stuff in a box.
I think this one is a great idea. You can put all your altar stuff in a box and assemble your altar every time you need to.This one is great for traveling or broom closet witches.
5.Make your room an altar!
Again,a great one for broom closet witches or witches who like having a million altars(hi!).Use your door as a protection altar, your mirror as a self-love altar, your bedside table as an altar for relaxation and sleep, your windowsill as a green witchcraft altar. The possibilities are endless!
Altars
To start off with, I just want to say that you don't need to have an altar if it doesn't feel right to you. As well as this, your altar doesn't have to be big or fancy, if you want it to be you can make it that way though.
Over the past few days I have been working to make my altar over, so that it fits what I want more than it did before. Some recent additions I have made are a shelf, an altar cloth and some more candles. Its still not completely finished and I'll probably keep rearranging it over the next little while.
But for now, here it is:
And here is a list of some of the things I have on it:
Some ribbon (Ostara is coming up in the southern hemisphere)
Salt
Water
Candles
Incense
Dried flowers
Dried sage
Crystals
Sticks
An owl statue
Burn dish
Jar of spring flowers
There is also a box with herbs and other things inside.
I still haven't fully decided what I will put on the shelf, but with time I'm sure I'll work it out. But that's besides the point.
When it comes to creating/decorating your altar, what goes on it and what doesn't is really up to you. If you think you should have a stick on your altar, have a stick on your altar.
Here are some things you could have on your altar:
Dried Flowers
Sigils
Artwork
Photos
Runes
Thats it for now, I hope everyone has a fantastic day! 🌻
Let’s talk about Altars ✨
Altars are the space where a witch practices their craft. It can hold a good deal of things, divided in any way that a witch sees fit. Some divide by directions, some by deities. Some divide by a way known only to them it’s up to you!
Let’s take my altar for instance:
All my witchy ingredients tucked safely underneath
My cauldron; a square clay pot I made in junior year
Lots of offerings on the right side of my altar
Things to represent the faeries I work with on the right
My wand
Decorations for Beltane
A couple specialty items
My altar will look completely different from yours, or even someone who works different from you!

Altar Tips for Beginners
Okay, so you’re a baby witch and you come to Tumblr looking for references on setting up your altar. There tend to be two extremes: People telling you exactly what they think must be included in an altar and then people telling you that you can set it up however you want.
While I agree that you can and should set up your altar in a way you want (there’s no right or wrong way to do it), sometimes when you’re just starting out, it’s hard to figure out what the heck to actually put on there. I know from experience. Here are some ideas for things to include on a beginner altar, utilizing items you might already have around the house!
A tablecloth, place mat, old t-shirt, etc. all work well for an altar cloth.
If you have a tarot deck, you can place it somewhere on the altar. You can also pick specific cards to feature around your altar, like The Empress to represent fertility, etc.
Rocks look great on altars! Even random rocks you dug out of your backyard! (Although you may want to clean them off first.)
While they might not look very fancy, you can put storebought containers of dried spices on your altar for easy-access. You could always switch them to nice jars or something if you want the aesthetic.
I like to put flowers and leaves on my altar because they help me feel more connected to nature. Fake flowers from a craft store are great too because they don’t wilt and they don’t trigger allergies!
Any magical item that you own and work with can go on your altar! This includes pendulums, spirit boards, scrying mirrors, etc. Remember that these don’t have to be fancy one-of-a-kind tools. You could even use that one dollar-store necklace you’ve been inexplicably holding onto since your third-grade birthday party as a pendulum.
Shiny things. Beads, gems, tinsel, metal cans, idk. I like to put shiny things on my altar. I swear I’m not several birds in a trenchcoat.
Have you ever found something random on the side of the street and kept it? Like a broken keychain or a shiny penny? I like putting those on my altar. They feel special, like I found them for a reason. One time I found a tiny broken ceramic bear head half-buried in my front yard. Obviously that’s gotta be magical, right?
Candles!!! You can never have too many candles. Especially fake candles. No fire hazards! Yay!
Feel free to add more! Remember the choice of what you put on your altar ultimately goes to you, but if you’re at a loss, I thought I’d offer some suggestions!
