I say a lot of stuff on this blog about "play another game" and I really want people to understand what I mean about that. monopolies are bad. DnD has, through marketing and business decisions and luck and capital, dominated the entire hobby in a way that no other creative genre has ever seen before.
What are they about?
Blades in the Dark is a game where you play a crew of rogues in a sunless electropunk industrial city. You’re dodging corrupt authorities, avoiding ghosts, and dealing with demonic forces. All the while you’re unable to leave the city because the lightning barrier around the border keeps out the horrors beyond.
MonsterHearts is a game where you play as high schoolers who are secretly monsters. It’s all about high drama and is very PvP. Think Twilight, Teen Wolf, Buffy…. That kind of thing. It’s really fun. You only have four stats, Hot (to seduce someone into doing what you want), Cold (To shut someone down or control your urges), Volatile (to lash out violently or run away), and Dark (to commune with the Abyss). It’s all about feeling like a monster in your skin as your body changes against your will, etc.
On the subject of TPKs and failure in TTRPGs, I gotta say, I love a good mechanic for losing.
I love that Fate gives you metacurrency for conceding a scene, and I love that taking extreme consequences creates a new aspect for your character.
I love that when you die in Blades of the Dark, if you're still attached to the character, you can just become a ghost.
I love that in Monster of the Week, when you need to avoid harm it costs a point of luck, which triggers a character-specific consequence and lets you see when your character's luck is literally going to run out.
I even love that in Cyberpunk they've created an omnipresent group of amoral, heavily armed paramedics, so no matter where your character gets gunned down, there's always a chance of pulling through.
Basically, any game that is set up so that losing is going to make things more interesting, not less, is a game that's going to help great stories happen at the table, and I love that.
drawing on paper is strange but i get to see my art in print so its worth it!
my Blades in the Dark character - the Kiss Bandit
she is "not" "just" "shopping"
Just too many thoughts too little will to live art
Playing around with some ocs as Blades in the Dark PCs, cause I’ve been GMing a weekly game and just want to make characters… If these look like Dishonored characters, it’s because they kind of are. Rosa was always a bootleg Emily, and I never settled on a look I like for Phoebe, so I just mashed them together with their inspirations (and a very old oc of mine) (tbh I already draw Emily and Alexi so off model and with so much headcanon juice I might as well take the rest) Just for kicks, but who knows, maybe I’ll play em some day. I have a whole Blades-flavored backstory and everything
we're starting a Blades in the Dark campaign so here's my character (and everyone else's character). Mine's named Zellmitch Maggard Dred (AKA Maggot) and he's a scholar, specifically a journalist! Of course they're from Tycheros, hence the appearance -
and the tail. listen I'm just a huge fan of the dark toes and fingers to the regular skin color yk? peak character design or smth.
ok but Ive also got art of
Dred - one of my friend's character, who's also from Tycheros. their tell is not the long, long cloak they wear that hides all their identifying features, but the inky tears they cry and the mascara effect left behind when wiped up.
and!
I forget her name, but here's a gamer girl for y'all. she's like, the 2000s version of an egirl, which is fun. Blades is a like, Victorian era steampunk sorta game but her clothes are as follows; a cropped sonic shirt given to her by our God, who just so happens to be the GM!
oh and ofc we're a cult, and we're obsessed with finding a way to extract MSG from seaweed and whatnot in order to make Doritos (what are those?) and we're also gonna be looking for Mountain Dew! (dew of the top of the mountains, obviously)
and here's the big drawing of us all
more Zellmitch art! I've got Zellmitch brainrot atm, as per usual when I'm making a new character for a ttrpg
literally fucking feral for him
some recent zellmitch art thats gotten me outta my rut
firstly, a character sheet :^)
and also a more in depth drawing of him - tell me where your eyes go if you wanna! coz i tried to lead folks eyes to a specific point
Floodhaven Knives / A collection of knives used in my Blades in the Dark campaign.
