Day 46 of posting cute creatures we found on our field trip:
Today I will introduce you to not one, not two, but three adorable lizards!
Mediterranean house gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) is one of two species of gecko native to Europe. It’s adorable and likes to hang out near people. It loves climbing house walls and hanging out in gardens where it feeds on insects and spiders.
Sharp-snouted Dalmatian lizard or just blue lizard (Dalmatolacerta oxycephala) is a very unique looking lizard. Both males and females are beautifully blue. They love rocky terrain of western Balkans and they can run super fast. It’s very hard to catch them. However, running is basically all they do and your fingers are safe from their bites.
Blue-throated keeled lizard (Algyroides nigropunctatus) is my favorite Mediterranean lizard. It’s small and feisty, but the texture of its scales is truly unique. It’s very hard to describe. Males of this species have brightly colored blue throat. Females are less blue. These lizards will bite you.
The Dalmatian blue lizard is much more blue than the blue-throated one. They both inhabit the same area, so here’s both of them so that you can tell the difference. (Our professor got the scratch while catching the Dalmatian lizard. “Asshole was super fast and using sharp rocks to hide”, he said.)
And here’s all three of them. Dalmatian lizard is left lower one trying to escape. Blue-throated lizard is left above contemplating murder. Mediterranean house gecko is on the right playing ping pong in his mind with his only two functioning brain cells like all geckos do.
