Saying their goodbyes: Shouto, Katsuki

Saying Their Goodbyes: Shouto, Katsuki

Shouto

Nee-san spoke first, “Please be careful, Shouto. I... I’m so sorry for being such a useless older sister. I wish, I cou-"

"I will. And you're not useless." That felt insufficient. Shouto tried moving his hand over his sister's head, like he had seen Asui doing with some of their classmates when they got upset. "Please teach me how to make soba properly, when I get back."

At this, Fuyumi's eyes turned watery.

Shouto faltered. Then he froze.

Natsu-nii had pulled him into a hug.

Perhaps not wanting their sister and mother to hear, Natsu-nii said into his ear: “Punch him in the face. Pummel his ass." And with an even lower voice, his brother whispered: "And if there's any possibility… please drag him home.”

Shouto flailed. Then he remembered what he did, when okaa-san had asked for his permission to hug him during one of his first visits, and put his hands lightly on Natsu-nii's back. For few seconds, his fingers gripped his older brother's sweater tightly.

Shouto turned to their mother. She had lagged behind his siblings slightly.

He knew that the loss of Touya-nii back then, had completely shattered whatever small parts of their mother had been left, that hadn't already been broken by their father. But Touya-nii had killed so many people. And his flames were so strong, surpassing those of Endeavor's.

Shouto didn't know what to say to his mother. But he had to say something, so he settled on, "Okaa-san, I won’t let our family hurt any more people. I promise.”

“I know. I’m sor…” His mother stopped. Instead, she reached out to wrap his left hand between her own smaller ones. “Thank you, Shouto. I’m grateful for having you.”

Shouto swallowed hard. His hand stayed in between his mother's palms, until the heroes were signaled to move out.

Saying Their Goodbyes: Shouto, Katsuki

Katsuki

“You will win.”

“What do you take me for?! Of course I will!”

For that, the hag decked him over the head.

Katsuki was about to let his mother know, that she hit like a ninety-year old. But before he could, his old man caught his gaze. Something in his father's eyes made Katsuki close his mouth again.

With her hands on her hips and her chin tilted up, his mother said: “Absolute victory. That's what you've always spouted. And absolute victory requires making it back. Preferably, in one piece. Although I don't expect that - no, I'm not underestimating you. But I'm also not an idiot. And neither are you."

At this, Katsuki averted his eyes. The hero students involvement in the PLW was still kept secret from the public. Aside from Icyhot, none of the students who got hospitalized had been allowed visits from their families.

Katsuki knew from his old man, that his mother had stood in front of the hospital every single day, until they learned that their son had been released and escorted back to his dorm.

During phone calls, he had tried to downplay his injuries. It wasn't because he agreed with the Commission's dumbass decisions.

It had been futile anyways. Katsuki saw from the expression of his mother's face, when she first laid eyes on him after UA's emergency shelters went into effect, that she had guessed the severity of his injuries right away.

His mother combed her hand slowly through his hair. Katsuki fought against the urge to tilt his head towards her.

"So. I expect an absolute victory, where as much of you makes it back as needed... to take the decking that you’ll get for being disrespectful to your mother. Got it?”

“…yeah, yeah. Just watch me.”

The hag gave his hair a slight pull.

And so, Katsuki's schoolmates, teachers, and anyone else in their vincity, got subjected to an encore of the Bakugou-screamo-musical, until it was time for the son to leave.

Saying their goodbyes: Kyouka

Saying Their Goodbyes: Kyouka

“Kyouka.”

“Mom! Dad!" Their daughter was pulsing with energy.

Of course she was. Afterall, she was doing what she wanted to do, risks be damned.

...

Jirou Kyoutoku knew a few things about risks and sacrifices.

Trying to support yourself in one if the most expensive cities, while trying to make it through university had been incredibly hard.

And getting cast off by your family at eighteen, because his politically minded parents didn't find "rock music composer" an acceptable career path, had been incredibly hurtful.

Thus, when Kyouka announced her wish to become a hero, Mika and him went with her through the possible risks and sacrifices that she might need to make in pursuit of her dream career.

Kyouka would miss the experience of afterschool clubs and leisurely school trips. She would most likely pass up on college. Depending on how her brand would develop, she might also pass up on partying, as well as other things that the average young person experiences.

Like himself, Kyouka would also only have a narrow margin for errors.

Like himself, Kyouka would need to figure out herself much earlier than most young people did.

But their child would be alright.

Because when he took on Mika's surname, his wife and him were in tacit agreement, that they would support their own children at whichever career they would chose, as long as it didn't hurt people.

And Mika had said, that their daughter had the same look of longing and determination, he did when he talked about creating music when he was still a uni student, when she spoke of her desire to help people.

Their family would be alright.

...

Right now, Kyoutoku didn't feel alright.

The sacrifices that he had to make in pursuit of his dream, had been the loss of his birth family who couldn't accept his chosen career path, and days of skipping dinner, and sometimes lunch as well.

The risk that Kyouka was taking in pursuit of her dream, however...

As long as it didn't hurt people.

But it did hurt. Pitchblack fear had taken room inside Kyoutoku's chest; its steadily tightening grip making it difficult to breathe.

His little girl was about to see unspeakable horrors.

Kyouka was about to witness her peers getting wounded or worse.

His only child was about to fight unimaginable evil powers.

Kyouka was about to be in danger of getting wounded or worse herself.

Mika and him did try to prepare themselves, that their daughter's future career would forsee slightly more risks than police officers and other first responders usually face.

They hadn't prepared for their only child to fight in a war, while she hadn't even her finished her first year of high school.

Kyoutoku wanted to scream.

He wanted to yell at his wife, "What were we, dumb, naive hippies, thinking?!"

He wanted to yell at his daughter and her friends, "You stay here at school! All of you!!"

He wanted to yell at their teachers and mentors, "How could you??! How can you??!"

He wanted to-

Mika had given him a light pinch in the side.

"Dad?" The excitement on Kyouka's face had been displaced in favour of the sober calmness that mirrored his wife's expression.

Dammit.

He couldn't ruin Kyouka's energy. Not now. His little girl was going to need all the buzz that she could generate.

"Mom. Dad. It's scary, I know. Please don- WOAH!! Nonononono, DAD! Let. Me. Down. You're embarrassing me!"

Kyoutoku laughed. It's been a while, since he had held his little girl up like this. She weighted more than he remembered. The last time that he had managed to catch her off guard, must have been way before Kyouka started to workout in preparation for UA's entrance exam.

"My daughter and their friends are gonna knock down those villains! They will blast them right out of the stadium, because their fighting spirit will be louder than anything AFO can offer!! Right, Kyouka?"

Hoping for some support, he looked over to his wife.

The corner of his lips faltered.

Mika had taken off her glasses. She was pressing a hand in front of her eyes, but her trembling shoulders betrayed her.

A slender hand brushed Kyoutoku's hair out of his face. He looked back up to his daughter.

"Yeah. I won't hold anything back. We will blast them to the moon." Despite the tears running down her cheeks, Kyouka gifted him a crooked smile, "but 'We are the champions' has been dead and done. Please wait for me with an appropriate victory song, 'kay?"

With his own tears constricting is voice, Kyoutoku wrapped his arms tightly around his child, and simply nodded.

He was going to write them the best celebratory soundtrack ever.

Saying their goodbyes: Ochako

Saying Their Goodbyes: Ochako

“Ochako!”

The girl turned around. “Mom. Dad.”

Her mother had already grabbed onto the strap on Ochako's shoulder to adjust it. "Do you have everything? Have you double-checked the seams of your bagpack? Oh, I knew, we should have gotten you a new one!"

Ochako squeezed her mother's hand. "Mom, I've got everything! My backpack is perfectly fine! I'll be fine! Don't worry."

She risked a glance at her father, hoping for assistance - and promptly regretted her last sentence.

How stupid of her.

Daddy's kind smile was straining around the corner of his lips. His usual eyebags, courtesy from overwork, were even darker than usually.

Ochako looked back at her mother.

Mom's small, calloused hands were knitted together. As were the same fine eyebrows that Ochako had inherited from her.

Ochako felt the familiar waves of guilt and powerlessness lapping at her. How could she say such empty words, like "I'll be fine" and "Don't worry" to her parents? Why couldn't she come up with something better to reassure them?

It used to be easi-

No, scratch that. It never had been easy.

Ochako knew that she had changed a lot since starting at UA. But while she has come to love her class, the time she had spent around them might have made herself more transparent.

She had worried about that a lot, especially since the other girls' have picked up on her feelings for Deku.

Secretly, Ochako sometimes wished that those feelings would be out in the open, so that Deku would address them. Not even to reciprocate them. Just so that she wouldn't have to deal with those emotions all alone for once.

The image of a crying girl with pigtails flitted across her mind.

It was not unlike to how Ochako felt, whenever her parents' issues had seeped through to her...

She pushed those thoughts down.

Her parents have done their best. And in this war, there really wasn't much that they could do. But she herself, might be able to do something.

In that moment, a flash of deep sea green from the corner of her eye, caught her attention.

Despite the two small pair of arms that were slung around Tsuyu-chan's neck, she still found time to raise a questioning eyebrow at her friend.

Ochako nodded and smiled. Then she turned back to her parents. She gave her mother's palm another squeeze, and took one of her father's into her other hand.

"It's gonna be alright. I can do it. We can do it."

... being child soldiers sucks, even if you chose that path for yourself. Being family to such determined children, must probably suck not any less.
