Why is Billy not acting on his feelings?
I liked your post, I came up with some other ideas:
Billy thinks the ship is the last place to be making a move/having a relationship. It’s too small to have any kind of privacy and everyone would know everyone’s business.
Billy thinks he isn’t worthy of Flint. Flint is an intelligent, educated, well read man, perhaps Billy doesn’t feel like his equal in that regard. Or lower class/etc.
There’s limited water on the ship and hygiene would be poor. Maybe Billy wants to make himself presentable before trying to do the deed.
Maybe Billy is a complete novice when it comes to romance and has no clue how to show that he is interested or make the first move.
Or say Billy isn’t a novice, and has been with men before when he was a cute teen. Before the modern era, the pretty boys, the ‘fey dandies’ etc, were highly prized. Maybe Billy thinks Flint would want a slim pretty boy to dominate rather than the hulking ‘brute’ Billy is now. Just coz two guys are into men doesn’t mean they are compatible types in the sack.
Billy is in love with Flint but is completely happy with how things are and doesn’t want them to change. The crew is his family, Flint the father figure and Billy there to take care of them all. If his relationship with Flint were to change, then maybe everything else would too. Billy might not want that.
Billy has feelings for Flint but won’t act on them because of religion. Yes, pirates can still think of themselves that way. Or religion makes him feel too guilty/ashamed to act on his feelings.
Billy doesn’t want to act on his feelings because of body issues. Imagine you’re a big burly man and everyone you’re intimate with is expecting you to be hung like a horse….and you’re not. That would make the most confident person shy about sex.
Or perhaps it’s the reverse. Billy is hung like a horse and thinks its impossible for anyone to have sex with him because he’s so big. So he is content to have platonic relationships instead. XD
Just Blint.
