But Having Reread It As An Adult Good Lord. Also It's Frankly The More Boring Version. ^-^U - Tumblr Posts
There’s a reason why literature departments don’t obsess over the question of ‘does this belong in the western canon’ anymore. It’s not because “the sjws” conquered the humanities; it’s because that’s actually a super uninteresting question, and all the questions you can ask about “the canon” you can ask about popular or genre fiction or children’s fiction or interactive fiction or anything else, and still get super interesting answers to.
This is what annoyed me about the whole ‘marvel movies aren’t cinema’ thing. Not the argument that superhero movies aren’t very good–that, AFAICT, is totally correct–but “this isn’t cinema” is structured like pure gatekeeping, and even if that isn’t the intent (and I don’t think it was), it says the least possible useful thing on the subject. Trying to define “true” cinema is dumb. At best, you’re using that as a proxy for a much more specific discussion. Since that discussion is going to be much more informative and useful to begin with, start there, and throw out the unnecessary scuffle with the Wittgensteinian language game that exists only to be provocative.
