I was stupidly late to the party on fanfics for my age (compared to my friends who were reading them much longer). My first fanfics were Black Butler in high school and I read NOTHING else until Sherlock. Took ages to ever leave those fandoms for anything else. But if I'd been more aware (And less "fear of disaster" regarding computers) I might have read Inuyasha or even Artemis Fowl at an earlier age. I was just terrified that anything on the internet might ruin the computer (any link beyond Wikipedia was supposedly a virus waiting to happen) and of reading anything that might get ruined for me forever if I read a bad fanfic of it. About somewhere 2009-2011ish? Hard to say, I'd have to sit down and do the math on that.
addendums: cult classic tv overlaps with early supernatural seasons somewhat, i am aware, just choose based on the cultural context in which you read your first fic.
for weeaboo crew i was thinking of examples like hetalia, black butler, soul eater, etc--popular anime absolutely included but the distinction is that people who were into dragon ball weren't necessarily going to anime club every week and making deviantart stamps about yaoi, but people into ouran high school host club ABSOLUTELY were.
homestuck is in its own category because homestuck changed fandom forever at a critical time which just happened to be when i was growing up in fandom. harry potter, lotr, star wars, and twilight are in their own categories because they were such multimedia juggernauts they had entire archives dedicated solely and only to their fic that spanned multiple franchise reboots (books -> movies -> extended universes). (i acknowledge star trek technically would fit under this but at the time culturally it had more overlap with other cult classic tv fandoms.)
honorable mentions that didn't make it to the list because i had to pick-and-choose with the 12 answer limit: the final fantasy franchise (axed because i am not familiar enough with the fic scene to know if it was as iconic of a gateway drug as, like, naruto or twilight or star wars fic), a general YA lit category (YA lit outside of twilight only went mainstream slightly after this time period), the MCU (i have a hate boner for the MCU), a broader "american superhero comics" category (this would be valid as an option but i don't have the space)

You want more parallels? The fact that it starts on the section right after the emphasized “Will I end up as me or as Hyde” it? (And the next four lines are kind of on that theme before it kicks into the “Am I a good man” bit.) And that it’s not JUST a reprise of “No one must ever know” but it’s a reprise of “Alive”? And “Transformation”? But the kicker is the fact that those three songs? Are in REVERSE order here of how they appeared! The way the plot goes it’s Transformation=>Alive=>No One Must Ever Know. In Confrontation goes it’s No One Must Ever Know=>Alive=>Transformation Those are all the relevant plot songs for Jekyll’s transformation into Hyde, but BACKWARDS (As far as I’ve been able to tell, the middle bit where Hyde interrupts is unique to Confrontation, but I’m willing to be corrected. I’m on month three of a new hyperfixation and not any kind of expert. xD)

I think I see earrings too so that’s at least two pictures with earrings) The second is the concept art (and actual outfit) of the second musical and the third is the very recent 2020 Black Label pop up store. Now the last one is a bit more difficult to spot (although you can see it poking up just a bit) but it’s a lot more obvious when you compare her and Ran Mao’s outfits and realize they’re identical. And it’s a lot more visible on Ran Mao.

Well this is largely speculation, and a some research, I know that based on other calligraphy tools of the 19th century that the scissors (Called qeychi, if I’m not mistaken) where probably used for exactly what you’d think (cutting sheets, ribbon, thread, ect... in the process of bookbinding or just general use for paper)
The scapel looking things seem to be a Kalemtrash or Qalamtrash, used to cut the reed or calamus writing instrument (called Kalem or Qalam) used as a pen. Here is it in use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJB2f-pJ2TU
I can’t guarantee this is the best example, but given what I know of how quills are made, this seems like it would work properly to collect ink and disperse the ink without spills. It’s nearly identical cuts to the feather quills.
Anyway, that’s the best I can manage with what I can find in English. I can’t even find the Arabic or Urdu (or Persian?) words in a clear way. آموزش تراش قلم seems to bring up the tool best (rough translation being “Pen cutting tutorial”?). At the very least it’s bringing up the right tool in use.

I’ve been trying to puzzle out a good way to say this, but I’m pretty sure those are African Violets, which are different then the type of flowers mentioned by Sappho. That would be sweet violets, which are Viola odorata rather than Saintpaulia (African violets). Also not something you can buy in stores, but still something you can grow in a container. They can be scented too!
The longer version is that they were discovered by Europeans in 1892, far past the associations and it wasn’t until the 1930s that technology got good enough that they didn’t just kill the plants off and were able to actually sell them.
As for the ties to lesbianism is due to a 1927 play called “The Captive” where the main character Irene sends a nosegay of violets to. (I’ll admit, that’s probably in your zine you mentioned. I don’t have that book in front of me (yet! I always LOVE finding new information and when I have the funds.... xP)
But this is what sweet violets (viola oderata) looks like, with the longer stems (I have a 1950s book that mentions being able to use them for corsages) and thinner leaves.
Please understand I’m not trying to be rude, but I wasn’t sure if you were aware there was multiple plants and there is a difference between doing something intentionally or because you simply didn’t know. (And deciding you count them anyway is also a valid option. I just wasn’t sure if you knew and would rather just spread the information)

Did you know that you can’t buy violets in flower shops? Apparently the stems are too short for proper use in bouquets, so your standard flower shop deems it unworthy of stock. I discovered this back in October when I tried to buy a violet bouquet to present as a (big gay!) gift for a girl I liked, and ended up buying purple irises instead.
In November (at @geekgirlcon) I bought my favourite zine, The Queer Language of Flowers (side note: it’s wonderful and I highly recommend it). I told the zine authors about my violet experiences and they said they just grow violets themselves; since then I’ve wanted to follow suit, so I can always have violets around to give to cute girls.
So for the first day of @solarpunkactionweek, I decided to finally acquire a violet plant of my own! This is the beautiful Sappho. 😊 Growing a single violet plant is not the highest impact change one could make, but since I have very little experience gardening, I think it’s a good start. I hope taking care of her will teach me about nourishment and growth for all of Earth’s daughters, plant and animal alike. 💖

Oh goodness! Thank you very much, that was way more than I expected in response. That’s actually much clearer and relevant to what I’ve been trying to figure out.
Because a lot more in the way of English related stuff on the subject tends to be from teachers which tend to at most seem to be in an apartment complex sort of thing at most.
And no worries, the only issue was on my end trying to figure out the right keywords that got results. xD Even if I could infer what was meant, having the actual Japanese word makes this SO much easy. Thank you again.
If you don't mind me asking, on the last picture you translated of Grell in her pajamas, what was the word you used for "Team dormitory"? I've been fascinated trying to figure out how the shinigami live and that seems like it has a cultural connotation. I've hit a wall with my usual methods but if I had the Japanese word that seems like it's a good keyword I might be able to jump the rest of my research off of. (Also thank you very much for translating that image in general. It's great. xD)

No, I don’t mind at all! The term Yana used was ‘社員寮’ (しゃいんりょう・sha’inryou), which I just quickly translated into ‘team dormitory’. But I think ‘company dormitory’ or ‘employee dormitory’ would have been more accurate

The image on which Yana probably based the Reaper Dispatch Society is probably this ⇊. Usually a relatively large building, either standing on its own, or even actually attached to the office.
Obviously they come with sleeping rooms, often only offering a bed/futon, one desk and a place to store clothing. TVs etc. really would be a luxury.
The more luxurious dormitories would have single rooms, while shabbier ones only provide shared rooms as bad as cramming six people into such a tiny room as the picture above.
Japanese company dormitories usually have a canteen, as is depicted in this ⇊ doodle by Yana herself. Even if there is a canteen, many dormitories also provide a shared kitchen. Those kitchens are usually the more industrial ones, and the majority of the space is occupied by many fridges for the employees to use.
Other shared spaces include a lounge, laundry facilities and bathrooms, of course. Some dormitories come with private bathrooms and toilets (which are more of a luxury), while others have communal washing facilities.

Actually, if you don’t mind my input, I have an idea that thought would work really well for prior to Dualist Kingdom (at the very least), although more for the Season 0 anime rather than the manga quite as much. I’ll try not to make this confusing since I’m struggling a bit to get it as coherent as I’d like. But what I thought would work was a Gengar for Atem and a Cleffa then Clefairy for Yugi.
So to start, the coloration and appearance with the golden third eye struck me as super similar, add to that the fact that for both that’s a temporary appearance only brought out when they’re using their full powers. The golden eye on Mega Gengar is stated to be able allow it to see into other dimensions which frankly doesn’t seem far off from Atem’s ability. Also the fact that it’s a ghost type hints to Atem’s true nature. The fact that it hides in the shadow of objects works really well as to why it’s been able to follow Atem. And while a lot of stuff talks about how dark Gengar is, there is also notes that it’s loyal to trainers who treat it kindly and a pokedex entry about how it just wants a traveling companion.
Next from there I’d remembered that there used to be a theory going around that Gengar was actually designed to be the shadow of Clefairy. That made it a natural opposite for Yugi. And having a Cleffa, which is cute and sweet really seemed to fit earl Yugi. But then the REALLY interesting bit kicked in. See, Cleffa evolves into Clefairy with friendship. So the idea of Yugi starting off with a Cleffa and because of him gaining friends the Cleffa is able to evolve before the start of Dualist Kingdom seems very in character. It’s also star shaped which matches Yugi’s hair, but that’s more of a silly reasoning. xD
Then I spotted it’s abilities. It’s hidden ability is Friend Guard, which is defends its allies and seems VERY much like the sort of person Yugi grows into by the end of the series. Sadly none of Gengar’s abilities are nearly so meaningful.
Basically, the short version is that both pokemon work really well for each character AND as complimentary designs for the duality that Yugi and Atem are usually shown with, with character growth fitting logically with actual plot points.

Ahhhhh look, anon, I spent a couple years specifically rping ygo+pkmn so this… is right up my alley. Yeah.
But yes, while in the past I focused more on giving the guys pokemon representing their friends or cards, I went more for representing THEM this time. And I specifically avoided any legendary/mythical options and included no Gen VII or VIII… because I haven’t played either of those.
Anyways, I spent horribly too long on this, so enjoy:

As much as I love that other people have also suggested rose gold, I actually had this train of thought a while ago and researched all her outfits (though I still went with rose gold. xD). With the exception of like the 100 sleeping princes stuff and the matching circus outfit with William, Grell mostly has silver but not exclusively so. (EVERYONE has gold in the 100 sleeping princes and for the circus one I’m pretty sure it was to match all the gold in the background.) Like, the skulls on her glasses in her main outfit, in the ballgown from the second musical the skull on her choker AND the brooch on the ribbon thing at her waist, the glasses as butler Grell. The thing at her waist is technically both (kind of silvery beads, with gold caps) as does her “modern” outfit from the one ova (silver skull pendant, but glasses with gold side decoration)

Actually, I kind of know where it came from (hazard of lurking in the fandom since at least 2010. o.O I only just did the math lately to realize that bit actually) Anyway, it mainly started with the fact that of the two locations mentioned in Most Beautiful Death by the Shinigami is Glasgow and Westminster. Admittedly, the first is in reference to Ronald’s report numbers not matching up and while the second is Alan pointing out a discrepancy. I BELIEVE (though don’t hold me to this bit, it’s been a very long time) that some of the initial stuff I saw that connected Eric to Glasgow (and therefor Scotland) was just a general consensus that with that one just being numbers that don’t match and the Westminster one being outright people not dying on the list that it was Eric’s progression as he got more desperate at left his “assigned area”. (This was LONG before the Green Witch arc so there was still a great deal of debate as to if there was even more than one branch, so it was assumed he was assigned all of Glasgow) At least that’s what went around my circle of friends as the logic behind it. After all, why bring up the two locations at all if they weren’t plot relevant. As I said though, I don’t know if that was just my friends and my personal headcanon from that point or not, but it was in a conversation of mine that I have recorded FROM around the right time (December 2011) and we definitely got that from OTHER people pointing out a connection between Eric and Scotland. That may have just been our personal attempt to to logically explain the connection. At that point (if you look, all this stuff was from about early 2011, with the original air date OF Most Beautiful Death being May of 2010. I believe it took roughly that year before the musicals really made any kind of appearance over here with people posting it on youtube some time after it’s initial release in Japan (after all, the musicals really weren’t a thing in the Kuro fandom until after Most Beautiful Death. That Butler: Friendship really didn’t get translated until AFTER despite being the first musical and even at the time was generally seen as kind of “eh”.) Another fanfiction that seems to have made something of an impact was Cathouse_mary’s “Uniform Code”, which had him not only BE Scottish in heritage, but have an accent. I don’t remember if that’s one of the earlier ones to do so (since it’s from rather late 2012) and it would take a great deal of time to look through ALL the fanfiction I can find to pinpoint that. But somewhere around the same time as all this (within the 2011-2013 range) they wrote a long thing titled “How to Write Kuroshitsuji Fanfiction”. I happened to have saved it to my computer (at the time, I had a VERY old computer that liked having a large word document open a WHOLE lot better than the large pdf it was on. And they’d allowed for the document to be downloaded anyway.) Anyway, in that document there was this said in the section on separating fanon and canon: “The first thing that comes to mind when considering Eric-fanon is simple: Eric being Scottish.While I’m not sure who first brought that into the fanon, it’s stuck rather well. You’ll find mention of it in various pieces of fan fiction. There are several pieces of fan art with Eric wearing a kilt. The result is rather humorous, and it’s actually not hard to think of Eric being Scottish.The origins of this particular piece of fanon are also not terribly difficult to figure out. Eric’s last name is Slingby, which is a Scottish family name.” This kind of continued the whole train of thought of Slingby being a Scottish name, and since Thezoni’s pdf was HUGE incredibly useful, my guess is that it helped solidify what was already sort of there into ‘fact’. (The name BEING Scottish basically seems to be a mistake someone made somewhere as far as I can tell. All my research of the surname doesn’t seem to have any kind of solid link there. About all I can think that MIGHT make a link is if at some point it was a relatively common surname in Scotland? Hi! Hope you're having a great day! I'm sorry to bother you with a silly question, but do you have any clues about where that "Eric is a scot" thing? I've seen it so many times while digging for fanfiction. Maybe it's the surname? But I couldn't find much on it. Thank you so much!

That’s not a silly question at all, and the short answer is that I don’t know. I saw the same thing in fanfiction repeatedly when I first joined the fandom, and I honestly thought that it was just some piece of canon that I had missed somewhere. I was even debating whether or not I should attempt to write in his accent in my own stories, but then someone asked that very question on a forum.
To my knowledge, it was simply something a writer or writers decided upon in a story, and it sort of stuck in the fandom. Other writers picked up on it later, and it’s now so common, it almost seem like it canon even though it’s not.
As for his surname, I haven’t really found anything on ‘Slingby’ but Slingsby is an Irish surname, as far as I can tell.

Hi~! I saw you mention something last Friday about wanting an outfit for Grell that is equivalent to William’s “suit of shame”. xD So I’ve spent the last four days drawing one. @_@ It’s based off of a mixture between actual historical circus/burlesque costumes (because people are terrible at labeling things properly), and while hilariously enough AFTER I picked the colors I found an actual circus poster from the period with a lady in the background with the EXACT color combination I picked, originally I picked the green because I thought that the “arsenic green” was a bit too fitting of a color for Grell to be wearing.
And the pose was just because I didn’t want to draw a plain one and so I’ve jokingly thought of it as the pose she’d go in if someone was like “Quick, act natural!” And the last thing is that I hope the details are visible enough. I added things like the skull on her glasses or gave her an adam’s apple, but the problem with MS Paint is that what is at 100% magnification seems to end up smaller when I’ve actually gone to upload it online (I’m still learning. xP)
