you know I've thought about this and I think soil scientists might be the collectively nerdiest area-of-study-based group of people I have every come across. like, in every group of people, there are those who are fanatics, but there are also those who are just kind of there without being too obsessed, but every single soil scientist I have met has been totally bananas for soil.

and i guess soil science is niche enough that maybe that makes some sense
but i feel like normally there would be someone who was there for slightly less geeky reasons

when i say they are waxing poetic...
there's someone in every area of study who's just kind of there because they like it well enough
