Casein Paint - Tumblr Posts

I have started working with casein paint lately, and I have to say that it is the Best Thing Ever. It behaves like watercolors if watercolors behaved like oil paint, if that makes sense. It stays workable, is water soluble, and I think it smells nice, especially compared to some paints.
It’s also totally matte when it dries, can be taken completely back up off your painting surface, eventually cures and becomes water resistant, and I can draw on it once it’s dry.
Subsequently, paint is happening. Paint is happening now.

I drew a cake. It was a fake cake. I drew it in conte on casein. Why conte? Because it’s Inktober and I do what I want.

Huevember day 13 catchup: obviously starving.

Huevember day 14: Huff the Hedgehog. Speed paint, 45 minutes. I used to have a hedgehog. His name was Sargeant Squidge Bickles.

New self portrait painting: “Artificer”
I’m playing around with layers of tar gel. There’s silver in the cracks. Casein and acrylic.

This is a painting I did for my friend’s hilarious fanfic. It’s a road trip full of shenanigans. This is a real painting, done in casein, and it’s 7 inches by 10 inches tall.

I really recommend it!

Casein paint. I am an absolute evangelist for this stuff; it is by far my favorite thing I’ve ever painted with. It’s smooth and creamy, vibrant, mixes and blends beautifully, and has the richest, velvety finish. Jack Richeson & Co makes the kind I use.

Here are some actual quality scans of some of my Huevember paintings from last November. As I work in traditional media primarily instead of digital, I opted to make full-on physical paintings for the challenge rather than digital images. Sometimes it worked out that the Huevember in question was the primary hue in the image, and sometimes it was the accent. The real challenge in doing something like that traditionally is color mixing and matching.
All of these were painted in casein paint, and all of them in the parameters of doing the painting within a single day. It was rough, as I also teach a full class load at a university. I did it, though, and I’m still happy about it.

Welcome to Huevember! We’ll see how long this lasts. First color: chartreuse.

Yesterday’s color, because I’m already playing catch-up. Main hue: Naples Yellow. As per my norm, I use casein paint. These are all on 6"x9" illustration board.

#3: cadmium yellow medium. This kitty has a magical quest for you.

4: golden ochre. A sweet summer child. I caught up after falling behind.

Two black trash bags of inky cap mushrooms + three years + a few secret ingredients = this much pigment and this much ink. I couldn’t help myself so I mixed up a small test batch of casein paint and had a little play. It’s very much a brown-black.

Made some experimental mushroom paint today. It worked out alright. I’m giving one of these pans to a friend to experiment and play with.
