Christmas Reunion - an Im Changkyun drapple

I did not particularly like college holiday festivities but this year's included students that have already graduated the years prior. Not one, but two graduates really close to my heart accepted the invitation almost immediately. Kylo, who graduated last year, moved to another city and has pestered me with one-hour weekly calls ever since, and Changkyun, who I met as a junior, moved to another COUNTRY and we've been messaging back and forth for years.
Someone would think I would be extra attentive to find them during the senior's & graduate's entrance, but no, I actually lost both entrances because I was talking on my phone. Which means I now have to walk all alone between a bunch of college boys&girls to find were my friends are. Bodies dancing and drinking, playing games and cheering, in a courtyard that compared to a football court in size and I cursed wholeheartedly my 160 inches of self and my useless pair of eyes for at least 20 minutes until I found them.
They were seated in a picnic table, opposite of each other, in deep conversation, sipping out of big red plastic cups. They weren't even looking for me while I had a cardiac arrest trying to find them! Kylo had both his legs folded under him, as he always does to get comfortable, and Kyun was wearing a scarf I had knitted and had delivered to him last christmas. They were different than I remembered and all the same at once and I just stood there watching them with a huge grin plastered on my face, waiting for one of them to sense my presence or some shit.
Kyun figired it out first, getting up in such a hurry he turned over his now empty cup. He reached me first and he started speaking so damn fast that I was really struggling to coprehend words and soon enough I could not even respond because he was squishing me , like, so hard. After he actually let me breath and speak, we exchanged wishes and news between the three of us, we got more drinks, we danced, and eventually filled some paper plates with finger food.
We returned to our picnic table, slightly tipsy, slightly giggly and happier than we've been for a few months now. I was really sleepy, but the organizers have prepared a firework display, and I was not about to miss out on that one. I slipped next to Kyun and started gushing about his hair, which by now has grown to the point of a ponytail, arranging strands of hair behind his ears, loosening up the rubbing band and tightening it again. I ended up pulling too hard, causing him to yelp in surprise and pain. My first instict was to kiss him on the cheek, as I do that to almost everyone to show affection, and I leaned up and pursed my lips. Somewhere between the noise and the booze in his system, his brain received the message that I wanted to kiss him and he leaned down, but instead of turning his cheek to me, he pecked me right on the lips. The shock written all over my face was silent, only accompanied by Kylo's hysterical laughing and the colour's of the fireworks dancing along Kyun's rosy skin. Merry Christmass indeed.
Unpopular opinion: Changkyun doesn’t need to be so hard on himself, yes, but…
1: he is not responsible for how people interpret something he says about himself. He was discussing HIS LAZINESS and HIS EATING and HIS EXCUSES and HIS INTERNAL MONOLOGUES. He was not speaking to anyone else.
2: we have to understand expectations on idols. They are constantly told to fast, skip meals, or are put on special diets despite the immense strain they put on their bodies. It’s not ok, but that’s the reality and their norm.
3: people have become entirely too sensitive to others opinions, even ones they have about themselves. INCLUDING ME. But recognizing that you have a choice on how you’re going to react to what people do and say is a BLESSING and please start exercising it.
4: I do agree that all idols, not just Changkyun, need to do some mental and emotional work in order to be ok when it comes to their health and relationship with food and fitness. But so do we all.
5: Cancel culture is so damn dramatic these days that we try to cancel everyone just because they blinked the wrong way. People are always going to have things about them you don’t like. Just don’t like them and move on. No reason to make a big scene over something like this. The only person he’s harming is himself… unfortunately. Everyone else just needs to step back, not make it about them, and realize that this view is a major issue among ALL KOREAN IDOLS, and that we need to build them up instead of letting them face it alone.
Stuff like this is how we lost folks like Jonghyun and so many others. Let’s not be the voice of hate just because we feel like a statement applies to us. It’s not healthy for us to do that either.
I wish people would stop saying Changkyun would get therapy. I knows it's a very off handed remark in America. "Get therapy." But in korea theres stigma and shame around that sort of thing. I'm pretty sure Jooheon didnt go to therapy when he went hiatus, though I'm guessing. I know he talked about taking medicine and pray. But yeah big shame and stigma around that.
And that’s true! There’s honestly a terrible stigma on it here too because it’s equated to being psychotic rather than just struggling. But I’m a firm believer, especially as someone who works in mental health, that talking about the things that weigh us down or hurt us (even to ourselves like he did, and got everyone in an uproar) is useful. He’s brutally honest with himself and more people need to be. So… yeah. Even if he does it this way. It’s not in his head and tearing him up like it would if he kept it a secret, and pretended to not struggle or to be totally perfectly fine. He literally said “yeah I struggle too and I have to kick my own ass to be ok” and that’s so real. People are just overly sensitive. He said it’s not about us, that he wants to be approved of by people, and that sometimes he struggles to work out and diet. It’s just like when people we perceive as “healthy” say “I’m so fat.” Like… we don’t have to take it that way. It’s ALL about perception. Just let him work through it without outside public judgement. Thank you for sending this in.
please do not use jonghyun in discussions relating to so called cancel culture he is not a pawn in this debate
I think you misunderstood my mention of him dear. I mentioned him, as well as other idols, because their mental and emotional well-being wasn’t far off from what we see in other idols now, especially when they discuss body image and dieting and how hateful words from fans spur that into a vicious cycle. He’s not a pawn and he is terribly missed. The concern is there for others in the same shoes. It also shouldn’t be a debate. People simply read too far into stuff idols say about anything like it’s a personal attack. I’m sorry out of all of my post on the matter that all that was noticed was my brief mention of idols who suffered a lot due to fans opinions and company mismanagement.

When someone says ‘nerd’, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
Super hero figurines and comics? Anime? Maths, science and computers enthusiast? You name it. He had it all.
Who’s ‘he’ you’re gonna ask? Changkyun. A guy that we share more than a few classes at school and somehow always manages to sit behind me.
I barely knew his name, only knowing he’s a huge nerd, but recently I happened to be paired with him for a school project.
Some people in my class that have worked with him, approached me after class with apologetic looks, telling me that it will be extremely hard and extremely boring working with him. I sighed and nodded, quickly picking up my bag and walking to my locker.
I placed my books inside, taking out some other books I would need for the next period, but a voice from behind me startled me, causing me to drop my books on their foot.
“Aaaahh” he cried out, grabbing his foot and jumping up and down.
“I’m so sorry, but you scared me” I apologized, closing my locker and collecting my books from the floor.
“I-It’s fine, I shouldn’t have scared you like t-that” he softly spoked.
“May I help you?” I asked and he nodded.
“Yes, w-we’re paired up on that p-project and it’s due to n-next week and I wanted to ask you when do you want us to m-meet and where” he stuttered and I giggled at his awkward state.
“I can free some time this weekend, perhaps Saturday afternoon? If that’s okay with you…” he added and I agreed pulling out my phone.
He looked at me confused and I giggled again. “Give me your phone number, so that I can call you” I said and he blushed, but quickly took my phone, punching his number inside, before handing it back to me and I smiled. “Thank you, I’ll call you” I said and turned around to walk away, a small 'goodbye’ was heard from behind me and I giggled at his shyness, walking to my next class.
After school I called him and he gave me his address and strangely enough he didn’t stutter at all, actually sounding really comfortable over the phone.
Saturday came sooner than expected and I found myself outside his house, knocking on the door.
“H-hi” He stuttered in opposition to his cool demeanor on the phone, his awkward self, reappearing. He opened the door wider for me to walk inside. “Hi” I greeted and walked inside taking off my shoes and placing them in a corner.
I raised my head and looked at him and he motioned me to follow him, walking towards his room.
His room was exactly what I expected, hero figurines on shelves, a bookcase full of comics, an extremely expensive looking gaming chair and amazing headphones and computer. I knew I was staring all around his room and made no effort to hide it.
I carefully approached some figurines, knowing he would be protective of them, but couldn’t help but squeal at the sight of captain America.
“Ahh, I love captain America, hey, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but he has one star on his uniform, therefore he should have been named ‘Captain Puerto Rico’, get it? Because its flag has one star,” I joked. “Oohh and is this ‘death note’? Woww” I excitedly let out and turned to look at a, now shocked, Changkyun.
“Do you know these? For real?” He asked, obviously shocked.
“Of course I do” I exclaimed and he choked on his saliva. “Marry me” He let out without thinking, his eyes widening as soon as he said it, his hand covering his mouth. I laughed out and he blushed, hiding his face in his hands. “Oh god pretend I never said that, please” He groaned from embarrassment and I giggled.
“You have to take me out on a date first, mister” I teased, poking his chest with my finger and he blushed even more, as I laughed. “Come on, we have a school project due” I patted his shoulder and he nodded, pulling out some books.
We had probably been sitting there for hours, because when I stretched my back, I heard loud cracks, gasping. “Ahh I’m tired” I exclaimed laying back on the bed and soon Changkyun mimicked my actions.
I turned to face him, catching him already looking at me, but he didn’t react. “What’s wrong?” I asked, slightly uncomfortable under his gaze and he shrugged. I slowly got up and he did too, now both of us facing each other.
We didn’t even realize we were leaning in, until our lips met and his breath hitched. I placed my hand on the back of his head bringing him closer and deepening the kiss. He sighed out, feeling content and I smiled in the kiss. I slowly pulled back and he whined, his lips momentarily following mine making me giggle and I gave him a last peck, finally pulling back.
“Wow” he breathed out and hid his face in my neck, as I wrapped one arm around him.
“Stop being so cute, kyunnie” and I swore I heard his breath hitch again.
“Senpai?” I jokingly let out and he groaned attacking my lips once more, falling on top of me on the bed.

Shownu, as we remember from No Mercy, in his collab with Kihyun, couldn’t work well with someone he didn’t know well. So, he ended up sabotaging Kihyun by making the dance difficult for him and Kihyun chose a difficult song for him and sabotaged him. Eventually both ended up sabotaging themselves for no reason. However, for a school project, since it isn’t a competition and both people benefit from it equally, I feel like both of them would make their project this way that each person’s best abilities are highlighted and they would actually be great partners for a project.
Wonho is the type of person that does a decent amount of work for the project but he is very likely to accidentally mess up a little, but not that bad. He would be very sweet but he wouldn’t be able to focus much on the project and would prefer to tell you random stuff and laugh with something random instead of working. He is a bit lazy but he would feel bad if he felt like he wasn’t helping you enough.
Minhyuk just wants this to be over with. He would sit down immediately, demand they finish it in one day and maybe just do some details the next day. The sooner the better. Comes off as workaholic but he actually isn’t. He is just too bored to have to worry about this for more than two days. Probably would try to convince you to work on the project on a Saturday morning till late at night. Or would just split the parts and tell you to have your part ready by Sunday night, while he’d get his part done the same day and be over with it.
Hyungwon knows how to cooperate. If you are willing to split up the work equally, then he will do a great work with you. He would hate if he had to work with someone who doesn’t care about the project and would probably beg the teacher to change his partner or would try to tell them that he had to do the project alone.
If Jooheon and you are friends then he can do a very good project with you and wouldn’t mind if you messed up your words during presentation. He’d also offer to do the whole presentation alone if you were too shy. If the teacher said that the both of you had to present, then he would help you and urge you to continue if you messed up. If you two weren’t close, then…you would be by the end of the project. Jooheon focuses on the process and not the result. If you try hard, no matter what the result is he will still congratulate you.
Changkyun isn't so cooperative. He focuses too much on the result. He is maybe the opposite of Jooheon here. If you try too hard and still not get the grade he thinks he deserves then he will be a pain in the ass to you for the rest of the school year. If he doesn’t care about the class, then he won’t be of any help and you will have to do all the work alone or you’d fail. You’d probably argue a lot if you two weren’t close. If you were friends he would be a little more understanding.
