Let's talk OZ
I honestly believe HBO’s OZ would have been so fucking popular on this website if it had been released during this time and not 1997.
Not only is the story great, the characters are great, the actors are great, the development is great, the CANON dysfunctional queer characters and relationships are great. Even though I’m not giving out too much detail and It might sound like I’m over hyping it but there is a reason why it was HBO number one show and it is honestly still such a fun fucking watch, it’s just an incredible show that I think everyone should take the time to binge watch
And one of the things that I always found so interesting about Beecher and Keller’s relationship on OZ was that instead of the usual in-the-closet-not-in-the-closet hidden-queer shenanigans their relationship is always very public.
Because it can’t help but be! The block of the prison they live in is literally made of glass boxes! Everybody can see everything all the time. And not only that but everyone HAS to keep apprised of their situation because depending on how their relationship is doing this particular week people could fucking die.
And the show very explicitly and purposefully continually reminds us that they are not alone and have no privacy. There are lots of shots of OTHER characters watching these two watch/argue/interact with each other. Whenever they have a moment that should be private we see other characters watching them, or a guard interrupts or whatever. And other characters discuss Beecher and Keller’s relationship amongst themselves and with Chris and Toby. And I feel like I’ve never seen anything quite like that anywhere else.
and just like. idk a queer couple being the center of public attention in a way that is neither purely hateful/disgusted or approving/congratulatory
