@climatact 'd For A Thing.

❝ you seem way more willing to be open about this than law is, so i suppose you're the person to ask. ❞

not that law was necessarily not open with rosinanteーthey had plenty of deep conversations about all sorts of things. their shared past, what they want out of their future, what freedom means, what choosing to die for someone means, what they regretted, what they were thankful for. talking to your father figure about your significant other appeared to be off-limits, though. he needed to get creative, and approach things from a different way.

❝ well, you're also the only other person i can askーbut at least you won't get embarrassed and hide your face when i ask for details. ❞

Oh, Nothing Invasivedon't Worry!

     ❝ oh, nothing invasiveーdon't worry! ❞

not that rosinante was curious to know such things anyway, but law would probably, definitely, without a doubt try to stab him again if he ventured anywhere close to 'too personal' territory. it wasn't as if there was any moral dilemma stopping him now; he was a doctor. any wounds he inflicted he could just fix later. plus, the ex-marine wasn't exactly versed in all the different ways law had learned to use the devil fruit he gave him all those years agoーbut he had learned law had adapted it to be used during combat, which could guarantee danger in his future if he wasn't careful.

❝ i'm just... surprised. law's still the same snappy little loner that i remember him being when he was a kid, y'know? getting him to talk about anything too personal is like pulling teeth. i literally had to almost bleed out in front of him to see him cry for the first time. i know he's a sweet kid inside, but... it takes a lot of pushing to get there. you're clearly someone really special to be able to do that. ❞

"Ah-" Little Did The Man Before Her Know That While Nami Appeared Incredibly Confident In Her Relationship

"Ah-" Little did the man before her know that while Nami appeared incredibly confident in her relationship when she was with Law, that she very much was the type to blush when it came to discussing their relationship. Perhaps the allied pirate captain's combined embarrassment and enjoyment at being one another's is what had Nami along his lap or throwing her arms around him. Little things like grasping his hand in public and stolen kisses while everyone was watching was just an added perk.

Of course his Cora-san would want to know more, but it didn't mean she was prepared in any way to talk about it. Pushing past the flush of her cheeks she nodded. "I don't usually kiss and tell, but I might be willing to make an exception depending on the question."

I See!

 ❝ i see! ❞

rosinante hung to her words, reddish-brown eyes receptive & alert, a smile that shifted from warm joy, to something a bit more pensive and perhaps.... embarrassed as the conversation turned to the marines.

❝ we haven't really talked about it muchーmy connection to the marines, i mean. i lied to him about not being involved for months, and the night i finally admitted it was the night we got... separated. ❞

separated. that was certainly a more docile way of phrasing what had happened than 'i was hospitalized on a marine base after almost being murdered by my brother & law ran for his life in the opposite direction', though rosinante imagined nami had already heard an abridged version of from law. plus, there was a time & place to delve into deeper topics with people, but a first time meeting between you & your son's partner didn't seem like it fit the bill.

❝ i'm sure he's told you everything, about how much he hates them. for what the world government did to his home country. part of my lying was i couldn't risk him not trusting me & running off while we were on the road, so i just kept lying. but that brat is too smart for his own good sometimes, so of course he figured out i was a marine before i told him, but i... doubt he's that happy about it, y'know? i don't really bring it up. ❞

I See!

Oh. Not a question after all, but a statement that had her cheeks burning brighter than they had been moments before. Of course she was special- Law realized that or he wouldn't have been so open with his attention and affections towards her. Of course she knew he didn't give that to everyone, considering he was still insistent he didn't like her captain half the time.

"I guess you can say we're a lot more alike than you'd think," she muses out loud, twining a ringlet around her finger in thought. Law was special too, or she wouldn't have been so open to accepting that their feelings for one another went further than mutual attraction. To find that they had much more in common than stubborn natures and quick tempers wasn't really much of a surprise. "We both wear our hearts on our sleeves, after all."

A hand reached across her own chest to touch the swirl of ink that sat over her visible healed scar, not sure if Rosinante would pick up on the meaning otherwise. "Mine's a reminder of my ex-marine savior too."

Talking about Bellemere was never easy, but with Law it had felt just as every part of other step of their relationship- completely natural. She had cried a little just at the mention of her, just like now her eyes misted over at the thought of her now.

there was a suspiciously large sack of beri sitting on the navigator's desk, one that she certainly would have noticed so one could only assume it had been snuck in the last time she was out. totaled up, the sum appeared to be in the range of 50,000 beri. at the absolute bottom of the sack, there was a crinkled letter.

nami,

i feel somewhat bad about not getting you an actual gift (i hope that doesn’t make you think i didn’t want to make the effort) but, when i asked law for advice on what i should get, he insisted (several times, even) that you would prefer straight cash instead. so, whatever you chose to buy with this, i hope you enjoy.

why did i want to get you a valentine’s gift? well, because you’re important to law—and, sorry to say, but that automatically makes you important to me, too. all of you strawhats are—i mean, i don’t think law would be alive without you guys—but you, especially.

i like showing appreciation when i can, because you never know when it’s the last time you might see someone. back when we first separated, the one thing i regretted most was not having enough time to say more than just ‘i love you’, or not having paper to at least write down some words for him to remember me by. knowing that i survived that, and there was so much more i could have said and didn’t—it taught me a valuable lesson about time, y’know? and now that i’ve given with a second chance, i’m not wasting one moment of it.

you picked an interesting kid to fall in love with. that probably makes you pretty interesting yourself. i would joke i have no idea how a little brat like that could end up with a sweet girl like you, but we both know law is a lot mushier inside than he lets on, so you two make perfect sense to me. more so, after knowing how much you two have in common. not just him, i’m glad both of you have that connection—i hope it’s made things easier to process for you both.

ah, i shouldn’t take up too much of your time—i’m sure law will get mad at me for getting in the middle of whatever you guys have planned. so, enjoy yourselves! there’s still a lot i want to know about you, so let’s get breakfast sometime next week. (I’ve got plenty of stories about law to share, if you’re interested).

There Was A Suspiciously Large Sack Of Beri Sitting On The Navigator's Desk, One That She Certainly Would

Count money, ask questions later was Nami's prerogative. Well, after she initial excitement from receiving such a gift at all. Law truly knew the correct gift to advise for his dragon girlfriend. She'd spent a good solid thirty minutes just hugging the bag, gushing at how someone must have really liked her to give her such a lovely Valentine's gifts.

There Was A Suspiciously Large Sack Of Beri Sitting On The Navigator's Desk, One That She Certainly Would

But who? Not Law. His gift came in the form of a diamond necklace that she was likely never taking off. Her crew members weren't the type to leave secrets gifts, rather preferred to make it known so it could be used against each other later... except for Sanji... but no, not Sanji. He couldn't keep secrets from her to save his life.

Not that she actually cared who it came from. All she cared about was money, money, money, money... And naturally, a woman such as herself was going to count it up and add up the total to her own private funds (it was a gift, after all. she didn't have to share it with her crew... even though she would likely in return use it on gifts, clothes and food at some point).

Imagine the thief cat's surprise when she found the letter at the bottom of the bag in a hand writing she didn't recognize immediately. Keeping her emotions in check immediately went out the window. To receive such a letter from someone so important to the person she had found herself falling deeper for every day.

"Oh, Cora-san," she sighed, wiping a tear away and carefully folding the letter, using a pin from her desk to tack it to the front of the bag where it belonged. No, she would not be spending this bag of berry after all. It would remained locked in her treasure box until the right time came to use it.

Later. Much later. Likely to one day put the very man that gave it to her in a retirement home for ex-marines. A really good retirement home, one that she would have entrusted to her own ex-marine parental figure had she ever been given the chance.

Law was so lucky to have this other chance, but that made her lucky too. Not only to have him, but to have the chance to meet the man that shaped his life.

Positive her hoard was carefully locked away, Nami gathered the meager gift of chocolates (home made with the assistance of Sanji) she had prepared for the man she sought him out.

"Thank you, Cora-san!" Hugging him somewhere around the kneecap she held out the chocolates. "

"Would you like to sit down and hold Cora-chan?"

"Would You Like To Sit Down And Hold Cora-chan?"

❝  absolutely! just, uh... gimme a second. ❞

for all of rosinante's quirks, injury-based or not, that contributed to his clumsiness ー feet he had to consciously fight against to keep toes from pointing inwards, tremors & numbness in his arms & hands from nerve damage, and an ankle either stiff or weak depending on what the universe thought was funniest ー somehow, rosinante never dropped law a single time during their nearly seven month trek together all those years ago. somehow.

he remembered that vividly, how awed he was. there were ample instances of tripping within moments of putting law down, or kneeling to let law slide off his back, but never while he was carrying him. he didn't know why; a god, or good karma, magic, or his brain going into overdrive when it recognized he was holding something fragile ( sure wish his brain would have done that before he shattered a whole wine bottle while trying to pour his brother a glass years ago ー he never heard the end of it! ), but he was grateful.

rosinante wasn't going to rely on whatever that was to save him this time, though. no reason to push his luck, especially if the cost was a potentially hurt child and two angry parents. the ex-spy had just spent thirteen years looking for law ー he didn't want to spend another thirteen waiting for him to speak to him again!

he slid off the couch, taking the throw pillows & his coat with him. he fidgeted & fussed until they were arranged like a nest around himself. softness on all sides. peremiter secure.

❝  sorry, just... some insurance. ❞ for him or for the parents? both, probably.

I Believe You. She's Got Some Tough Genes On Both Sides. And Tough Parents. Hence The Perhaps Overkill

❝ i believe you. she's got some tough genes on both sides. ❞ and tough parents. hence the perhaps overkill display of trepidation. now that he thinks about it, he remembered his father telling him a story ー one of the few stories of his early childhood he had access to at all ー of his mother doing exactly this. not so that she wouldn't hurt rosinante, but so that he wouldn't hurt himself during playtime.

❝ still, i'd rather play it safe. i don't think i've ever held a baby before... actually, wait ー once. one time. ❞ he wrinkled his nose at the memory, his hand briefly flexing as if trying to stretch out some phantom pain. ❝ a crewmate of my brother's found a half-fishman baby abandoned near our base. he bit me, and that was that. no more babies. ❞

well, clearly that was not that ー this was law's kid, after all. if there was any baby he would make an exception for, it would be her. hell, she could even bite him, too, if she wanted. not that he expected her too, but who knows? maybe biting people is just what babies did. ❝ the whole time i was there, doffy thought that was the thing that made me hate kids. or, pretend to hate kids, i mean. ❞

@code01746 Grandpa Cora-san

Like an over protective mother cat, Nami only chose to offer up her little one she trusted with her… and she was not typically known to trust just anyone. It was the highest honor to be offered a chance to hold the midnight haired and golden eyed baby, decked out in a heart patterned onesee, complete with a matching bow for the occasion. Meeting one's namesake was not an every day occurrences after all, and Nami believed in assuring the youngest of heart pirates was always properly dressed.

Features softened from the display of the ex-marine, a giggle slipping out. This is the reason she knew she could trust the large man with her baby, knowing he had her protection at the top of mind despite afflictions that could potentially cause harm… As if Nami would trust her child with anyone she feared would hurt her and would claw out the eyes of anyone just for the offense of looking at her wrong.

“Don't worry, she's not nearly as fragile as she looks and I will be right here.” Carefully cradling the back of her head, Nami sat down amongst the pillows to join the blonde and little bundle that was her daughter. There was something about babies that was so naturally relaxing, and if you asked Nami it was impossible not to look upon Cora-chan's cherub face without feeling a sense of calm. Fingers brushed along soft little curls that started to form along the back of her head while she slept on, content to snooze in anyone's arms after having been passed amongst her mother, sister and every heart pirate.

Oh, I'm Sure I'll Be Fine,

  ❝ oh, i'm sure i'll be fine, ❞

rosinante found himself waving off the concern the more he fully focused his attention on the baby. there was a growing impulse to grab her little cheeks and wiggle them around, or pinch her wrists in between his giant hands and flap them around while babbling nonsense at an increasingly high volume. composure, rosinante. composure.

❝ maybe it's because i had no paternal instincts to speak of back then, but now that i'm thinking about it: if she wants to partially tear a finger off, i mean - look at this face - i guess i can make an exception. i did for her dad, after all. ❞

it would definitely be less convenient the second time around not having doflamingo there to instantly stitch the wound and keep him in one piece, but, the more he put thought into the idea, would it really? he did have law with him now. or, more to the point, law's devil fruit; from what rosinante had gathered, he could do virtually anything from the confines of that blue sphere - so stitches probably weren't too out of the realm of possibility.

listen, all he's saying is that if the trafalgars wanted to turn "causing rosinante grievous bodily harm" into a family tradition - who is he to try & prevent that kind of bonding time? he's just thrilled to be included.

Just The Once? Umber Eyes Momentarily Slipped From The Younger Cora, To The Older And Back Again. Taking

“Just the once?” Umber eyes momentarily slipped from the younger Cora, to the older and back again. Taking her eyes off her was something she struggled to do still when sleep didn't grip her ever being. A newborn was exhausting, but a part of her still couldn't fathom she was real and if she looked away she might miss something precious she may never get a chance to witness again.

”Poor thing, I wonder if it was teething.“ Children of all kind always had a special place in her heart. Had a child landed in her lap she would have done the same thing, continuing the cycle of taking in children in desperate need of a parent. And yet, she couldn't fault Cora. She imagined being bitten by a fishchild was startling, and considering she had heard of his treatment of Law prior to taking him in, she had an understanding that he meant no actual ill will to the child.

Eyebrows knit together at the mention of the former warlord. Family resemblance aside, it was hard to imagine any form of brotherly love between the two men. Hearing his name used in such a way made Nami uncomfortable, but the encounters she had with the men had chilled her to the bone. Donquixote Doflaming was a monster and a man she wanted no association with. Anyone else she may have even smacked for uttering his name in front of her baby, afraid that it would summon him to take away their little heart in revenge. But because it was his brother, she would not hit or scold the man.

Instead, Nami chose to imagine what it would be like if her sister were such a monster. They were not even blood related and yet there was not a world in which she would still love her to some degree. Instead, she chose to return the subject back to his earlier point. “I guess it's a good thing Cora-chan has a little while before she starts teething. Ah- I should warn you, when she does I heard stories that I was a biter until Nojiko bit me back once, so maybe once she starts teething you should steer clear.“
