do you ever think about how if you dive into the ocean and go deeper and deeper you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light, and if you go up into the sky and go higher and higher you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light

Spectacular seafloor finds. 💜

This is Psychropotes longicauda, one of the sea cucumber species commonly observed at MBARI’s research site Station M. These sea cucumbers grow from 75 to 150 millimeters (three to six inches) long and feed on detritus that drifts down from surface waters. This group of sea cucumbers is found worldwide in very deep waters ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 meters (6,560 to 19,685 feet). Although they have the ability to swim, researchers aren’t exactly sure what the large fin is used for in this species.

Long-term studies at Station M have revealed that this species of sea cucumber seems to prefer eating older detritus that has been partially decomposed by bacteria. The observations made over the last three decades of research at Station M provide a glimpse into the dynamics of life on the ocean floor.

A blobfish sits on the sandy, purple sea bed, illuminated by the light beam of a submarine. Its thin tail is green-blue and another fin of the same color waves down from the base of the tail to the mid-back. The body is a soft gray and triangular. Two fan-like fins frame the face on either side. It is bulbous and like the rest of the body studded with small white bumps. Its eye is small, black, and gleaming with quiet knowing.

A deep sea friend: the blob sculpin. These are also known as "blobfish," which won the price for world's ugliest animal a few years back. Why doesn't it look like the blobfish you've seen on the internet? With bulbous noses and frowning lips and pink flesh? Those blobfish were dead and photographed after removing them from their seabed homes (1,600 to 9,200 ft deep) in the pacific. Reeling them up causes their bodies to rapidly expand because of the pressure change, which causes them to become pink and bloated. This blob sculpin rests peacefully on the ocean floor, staring up at the light of a submarine that illuminates it. Soon, it will swim off into the dark, hunting small crustaceans.

Abyssalcore

What is abyssalcore about?

Abyssalcore is about the ocean abyss and the animals that inhabit it. I always liked the ocean abyss and deep sea animals in general. Also the cool vehicles like submarines and ROVs used to explore the ocean. Shipwrecks like the titanic looked really cool as well. So I was bored and decided to make it.

Happy MerMay.

Happy MerMay.

In 2019 I had a list of unusual sea creatures that I made merfolk from. I'm redoing the list in an attempt to show progress this year.

Day 1. Vampire Squid
