Pastel Doodle
Even before I tried the Procreate tutorials, I opened the app occasionally to play around a bit.
I feel like there’s a bit of a double challenge, the app itself, switching to a digital format with layers and digital brushes has its own learning curve, but also just drawing itself. I haven’t really drawn in ages and almost feel I have to relearn how. Nothing like some practice and also remembering not to take things too seriously or get discouraged 😊
Used the default Procreate pastel brush for this “study of an apple”. Done sometime last year.
Solid Colours
One of the first so called “completed” pictures I did last year when I decided to get back into drawing.
I was mostly trying to get a sense of the app, so stayed with simple lines and solid colouring. Used a butterfly picture as a guide, didn’t trace it. Not perfect, but like in all things, you have to start somewhere 😊
Symmetry Doodles
Did some random lines to practice the symmetry feature in Procreate, also tried practicing colouring the shapes.
Hadn’t really thought of the symmetry tool in a while and I had to go and google it to refresh myself before posting this, I need more practice 😊
A Hand
A very quick sketch trying to remember how to draw, especially on an iPad rather than good old fashioned paper 😊
Used my left hand as a model, used to do it way back, tried to see if I could again. Not great but not terrible. Kept it simple, used the default Procreate pencil brush.
Ferry Doodle - Yellow Flower
Still in the “getting to know you” phase of the app. A quick little doodle as I waited for the ferry to dock just to experiment and practice a bit with layers and brushes. Used the default pastel brushes, all freehand, no reference pics.
YouTube Tutorial Take One
Did some googling around looking for interesting tutorials to try, after some trial and error tried James Julier. In part because I like his style, but mostly because he uses the default brushes and I didn’t have to worry about downloading anything to give it a try 😊
I actually didn’t finish this one, got a little overwhelmed by trying to paint and follow along. Lots of pausing and rewinding. Might go back and finish it another time, we’ll see.
Ferry Doodles - Mountains
Passing the time on the ferry by doodling some mountains. Used the regular pencil brush for his.
Pear
A quick study of a pair using the default pastel brushes.
Pear Two 🍐
Decided to cut a few corners and buy some brushes. I’ll worry about learning how to do them myself much, much later :)
Googled around and decided on the Bardot Brushes, it also helped that there was a nice sale at the time! They also came with pastel backgrounds/paper.
I drew a quick pear using the Bardot pastel brushes to compare it to the one I did with the default brushes.
I do think the new brushes add a bit of extra “pastelness” feel to the drawing 😊
Tangerine Dream
Actually, pretty sure they’re mandarins or oranges 😊
Everything is better when it’s free, decided to take advantage of the free classes at the Apple Store. It was pretty basic, but fun, especially having a live person to show me stuff and chat with. Videos are cool, but sometimes in person has its advantages.
Used the default brushes and a photo I took as reference for this sketch.
YouTube Tutorial Take Two
This time I finished it! 😊
Tried doing another James Julier tutorial, this time the “snow landscape drawing” one. Persevered through the pauses and rewinds and finished it. Not too bad 😊
Palm Tree Tropical Island Tutorial
This would be my third James Julier tutorial, the second that I completed. A nice beach scene with classic palm trees. I think I’m getting better at following along 😊
Mountain Sunrise
Continuing with the James Julier tutorials, this one is called ‘mountain sunrise landscape’.
Mountain Lake Landscape
Continuing with the James Julier tutorials, a nice mountain landscape.
I recently discovered the canvas information tab in Procreate, looks like it took me about two hours to do this one. Basically about double the tutorial time with all the pausing and rewinding 😊
Ferry Doodles - Trees
Passing some time on the ferry by trying to remember and practice some techniques used during the various Julier tutorials. In particular, the select, copy and flipping functions with the trees 😊 Used the default brushes.
Waterfall Tree Sunset
Another James Julier tutorial.
I don’t know, I feel like if there were more cherry blossom trees this could be a scene from a xianxia drama 😁
Already into my April pictures, May wasn’t super productive art wise, I think I need to draw a little more this month or I might start running out of art.
Impressionist Painting Tutorial
Back to Art with Flo for her step by step tutorial. I think I missed a step or two towards the end, but not bad overall 😊
Used a mix of the default brushes and some of hers.
The Northern Lights
Back to the James Julier tutorials with the Northern Lights Mountain painting.
Mountain Landscape
A slightly different feel from the usual Julier landscapes. This one is from Art with Flo.
I should start making better notes on the brushes I use, I think this one had a mix of hers and the default ones 😊
A Field of Flowers
A field of pretty wildflowers, curtesy of James Julier 😊
